It's been 9 years since I played the game & I still remember the shock I was in when I found out that these folks were cannibals. Also little fun fact, (James) the guy that Ellie killed with the cleaver was Joel's voice actor in the games. I never knew he'd be making an appearance on the show so it was a nice surprise seeing him.

Bella said that the majority of the trauma Ellie endured didn't come from what David did to her but from what she did to him. She didn't just defend herself, relished in the brutality & she enjoyed it. Very much like Joel. This highlights the central thesis of the project going forward.

I don't know the games but I thought the Violent Heart comment was rather pointed given they've made a point to show how anger and violence are things that have flared within her, seemingly something that started after she thought Riley abandoned her. Seems like every episodes focal characters, both protagonists and antagonists, are intended to highlight or reflect something about Joel, Ellie or their relationship. At least that's the vibe I'm getting.

This episode was great but brutal. The scene with Ellie taking care of Joel and then the end scene😢Bella Ramsey did a superb job in this episode. Troy Baker who voiced Joel in the game did a good job as James. I can't believe we only have one episode left😢

"If you lost in the darkness, look for the light"
If Ellie was the light in the darkness, there is not much left of it now. For Joel, it's still enough. He regains his light through her, at the same time she loses hers through this world.
Another low point for Ellie and a turning point for her. Here the animal in Ellie came out with her overkill and the experience she had to make. Almost r*p*d and eaten. Here she experiences for the first time the worst abysses in man. I think if you've seen Ellie's past reactions to losses, there wasn't much anger involved. She swallowed Sam's and Henry's death completely. Here in her outburst really everything came out, which was not seen before.
There is no way back for her. She will not be the same anymore. The episode is also important for the future. It shows what Ellie is capable of. A dark side in her that people like David recognize.
We have already seen this in her. Her slightly morbid side when she tortured the stalker and then kills him (because of Riley). She gets very close to a dead man who has just committed suicide and then laughs as he breaks through the ground. She watches in fascination when Joel beats the soldier to death in episode 1. The constant asking for a gun. This side in her is not dominant but it is there.
Another very good change to the game was to show that Joel didn't manage to interrupt Ellie's Overkill. So this scene ran much longer than in the game. Which shows that Ellie does not come to an end so easily when she has started something based on her emotions. Her emotions/charakter don't allow that. This wasn't just an overkill, this was an over-overkill. Of course, absolutely understandable.
We learned that David and James use codes when they speak. So it is easy to imagine that they did not spoted a deer but humans. The conversation they had about how much rations they still have was certainly coded. Three human bodies were hanging there. That's what should last another week or two. Then they decided to go hunting after a "deer". The four men David sent out two episodes ago were certainly also on the hunt for people. That's why Joel was directly attacked.
Even though David says that only a few people know and he certainly believes that, I think everyone there knows what they are eating. They are all afraid of David and he is their provider after all. No one asks questions because nobody wants to hear the answer, but everyone knows. If you say something, it becomes true. For them, David is God and every time David speaks of God or Father, he means himself. Even the banner in the steakhouse "when we are in need, he shall provides" is nothing more than a reminder to people that it is David who ensures their survival and not God. In the episode about God and faith, David is the devil in human form. The devil seduces, the devil lies, and the devil loves fire. That's why he lets the steakhouse burn. This is the methapher. We're supposed to see who David is. The shot just before Ellie attacks David shows this very well. He stands in a wall of fire.
The story David told Ellie by the campfire is certainly not true either. He said they were ambushed by raiders after they fled Pittsburgh. I'm sure they didn't escape them, they ate them and they certainly weren't raiders. He just wanted to have Ellie's trust. He wanted to be her good new "father".
The father of the girl Joel killed will always be with her. After all, mommy cooked him well. And of course, David has real penicillin for Ellie. They don't want to eat infected meat.
It bothered me at first that none of the people of the city showed up at the end. But of course, the rest of the people didn't realize what was going on. The weather is shit and cold. They will sit in their houses and scrape the remains of the girls daddy out of their teeth. Okay, enough macabre. 😁
I also think it's cool and urgently needed that the torture scene actually showed us explicitly how Joel has proceeded over the last 20 years. This was the first time it was really shown why everyone was afraid of Joel in episode 1.
This is Joel we know and he liked it. This is Joel when Ellie is not with him.
A nice Tess callback from Ellie in the conversation with David.
"Your (our) luck had to run out sooner or later." were Tess's words shortly before she had shown Joel her bite.
Troy Baker (Game Joel) as James was sensationell good. I didn't think that one day I would have to see Ellie kill Joel.
There will be properly another timejump. At the beginning of the next episode they will already be in Salt Lake City. Also, we'll see Ashley Johnson, who was Ellie in the game.

I assumed that 'venison' was a man, 'elk' was a woman, and 'rabbit' was a child. David and James needed a code for what 'stock' levels they had.
