The one you miss from the story is that Robert, who once spoke to Tess before the blast from the car bomb that free Tess, sell the car battery that actually belongs to Joel and Tess to Marlene. But the battery was broken and then they got to an argument, hence the shooting that killed Robert and blocking Tess and Joel from entering the building. Joel needs the battery to find Tommy who went away after joining the Fireflies under Marlene's influence. Tommy does not like the life Joel did for 20 years as a smugglers with Tess then join the Fireflies and had an argument with Joel and left Boston QZ. Marlene as the leader of the Fireflies needs the battery also. So the deal went south and she got shot
The subtitles on the stream you're watching... are those in Belarusian or Russian? I couldn't quite read them. (I took Russian in school a looong time ago, but can still piece some things together.)
The kid which they gave the shot to is the same one that Joel threw in the fire. They euthanized him because the scanner came up red which as you said at the end means positive for infection. The kid served as foreshadowing for the end of the episode and to show that Joel's loss and surviving for 20 years has hardened him to the point of being able to throw a dead child into a fire with no feeling at all.
It's interesting to see a reaction to this story by someone who hasn't played the game. Unlike the Walking Dead, where dead corpses are magically reanimated into monsters, the "infected" here are all alive. The infection reminds me of the T-Virus from Resident Evil or the Rage Virus from 28 Days later...which makes this all that much more scary. The fungus in this show would have to take a pretty big leap to be able to infect humans, but since we've already seen bad people "improving" viruses like C-19 in the real world, it's a lot more believable now than a few years ago. I look forward to seeing your reactions to the rest of the season. It should be a thrilling ride.
