For decades, Sok Kouen has been living in a small shack by the Mekong River in southeastern Cambodia, collecting plastic containers and selling sugar cane juice to support her family. But her home could soon become part of Cambodia’s mega Funan Techo Canal project. The China-funded waterway will run from the Mekong near the capital Phnom Penh directly to the sea, with the project aimed at boosting the country’s economy.

As a Vietnamese, I will say most of the criticism of the canal in Vietnam was done by nationalist, and pro-Western elements. They relied heavy on the fact that the canal was funded by China to create fear, and hatred towards Cambodia and to an extent China. The Vietnamese government has not endorsed this view, tho they don’t discourage the spread of its either.

To keep you an idea how much of a difference there is between Vietnam and Cambodia:
In 2022 Vietnam exported $399 billion and imported $358 billion while Cambodia exported only $35.9 and imported $45.2 billion. (source: OEC)
I think this new river would be a great boon for Cambodia and will likely greatly increase its own capacity to grow food and produce other goods.
From that $35.9 billion export $19.8 billion is exported through US/European clothing makers, especially very cheap ones. They actively benefit and profit from keeping Cambodia a low wage country.

the Mekong river delta in Vietnam used to be Cambodian territory but was annexed by Vietnam in the 1780s by taking advantage of the domestic unrest in Cambodia. Cambodia always has a strong national heartache for this part of history.

    • @phamemily1453
      @phamemily1453 20 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +8

It was never annexed by Vietnam. The Mekong delta region was discovered and harvested for economic development and agriculture by an exile Chinese-born general Mac Cuu, who later requested that these territory be integrated into the territory of Dai Nam and protected by the Nguyen Lords in his allegiance to the Nguyen Lords. Additionally, In 1732, Cambodian general Prea Sot infiltrated the Cambodian’s slaughter of the Vietnamese living here. After that, the Nguyen Lords sent troops to fight, King Nak Tha (Satha II) of Cambodia was afraid of being invaded, so he sent a letter to General Nguyen Cuu Triem asking for the Longhor and Peam Meéar region to be merged into Dai Nam today's Vinh Long and a part of My Tho. In 1756, the king of Cambodia Ang Snguon, after being defeated by Lord Nguyen Phuc Co, offered the land today in Long An and Tien Giang to pray for peace. To be fair, Cambodians never own the Mekong Delta and Vietnam never annexed these regions. It was given to Vietnam as a form of tribute by the people living therể and the Khmer people themselves.

An objective viewpoint hopefully no one can argue with: A few principles to start with...
    1. Every country (more accurately, regime) is selfish and acts in its own best interests, subject to the constraints it faces at any given time
    2. Countries form alliances of convenience based on mutual interests
    Ok, here we go!
    1. Has Vietnam previously taken portions of Cambodia's historical coastline over time, benefiting it, and to Cambodia's detriment? Yes.
    2. Does every country have a right and yearning to develop itself? Yes. Thus, is it logical that Cambodia would want to build this canal? Yes.
    3. Will it be bad for the environment? Probably.
    4. Will it hurt the farmers in southern Vietnam (who are not themselves some scheming geopolitical strategists, like those who originally took some of Cambodia's coastline)? Probably.
    5. Is it a long-term selfish move by China to help Cambodia build the canal because Cambodia is more easily controllable by China than Vietnam? Yes.
    Analysis complete!

@@Eza_yutaYou re right, Vietnam goverment re going to build several dams to keep fresh water for our own agriculture. However, loss of water from Cambodia canal in some way till affect negatively Mekong delta in Vietnam. Naturally, its the lower end of Mekong river to South china sea and it needs lots of water to be fertile, If not, the whole area will be sinking under water in the next decades to come due to climate change. This area is the main Vietnam agricultural export produce, our national food security considering that Vietnam constantly attacked by tropical typhoon like Yagi. Cambodia cannot live 0:03 forever under Vietnamese stranglehold. It's funny this video only highlights the prophesized negative aspects of this project. How about the prophesized positives when Cambodians have the choice of trade routes?
The funny part is that SCMP did not even say that the Vietnamese government fully support this Cambodian project .. which it did late last year. That means the Vietnamese government was fully briefed and consulted before the project started.

Everyone is so focus on economic development but ignoring ecology damage the artificial canal make to the downstream in Vietnam. Without the sediment from Mekong River the southern part will sink below sea level faster. Plus there will be less fresh water for drinking as sea water seepping in the inland river and soil.

Cambodia need the canal to improve so they not gonna back down but they can make thing go more amicably making sure some to address Vietnam worry but that will depend of how Vietnam stance and willingness to engage too.
