In my opinion this is the greatest of Mozart's concertos. It is at least the most romantic of all of them. I love the passionate performance by Argerich!
Why do you find it the least romantic? I find it very Romantic, with the minor key, and the extended thematic material. I would consider some of his early efforts far less Romatic such as K. 238, the early K. 413-415 pieces etc which are very classical in outline.
I do not know why but whenever I listen to this, my chest just warms up and it pulls my mind into a state of bliss and wonder. Classical is easily the most magical and wondrous form of music.
Mark Smith That's a good point because out of all the other genre's aside from classical, Heavy Metal's perhaps one of the most musically developed, it's quite closely linked to classical in terms of dynamic contrasts and introduction of new musical sections (as opposed to pop music which just repeats the hell out of everything). It just depends on what people prefer, I can see the appeal of repeating a decent riff over and over although it can become a bit overused in pop, and in terms of classical vs metal I prefer classical because it's not as overpowering (I can actually do work whilst listening to classical as opposed to metal, which is more a kinda sit-up-and-listen kind of thing, it doesn't really do quiet or subtle)
Argerich captures the demonic in Mozart better than anyone. This piece is full of anger and metaphysical rage. Mozart is saying "I know the state of things and it's bad." And he's pissed about it. He's trying constantly to contain the anger but it continually breaks free. It seems he's finally done it in the second movement, but then in the middle section it breaks out again with even greater vehemence. In the third movement the anger is taken to an even higher level until a breaking point is reached. But the D major reached at the conclusion of the piece is not a victory, but a cynical conclusion to an epic battle. Mozart seems to be saying that there is no solution, and the only response left is satire. Stick your tongue out at the devil and he'll go away. A fascinating piece which was extremely avant-garde at the time it was written and again demonstrated that in Music there was Mozart and then everyone else. He was very far ahead of his colleagues and it is questionable whether even the Romantics fully understood the implications of what he was doing. This is a truly great performance and Argerich and Rabinovitch come very close to capturing and expressing what this incredible piece is about.

Back in the late '70's and early '80's I went on a Mozart binge, borrowing records from the library every chance I got. This one was my favorite. I remember hearing #21 and being surprised that the "Elvira Madigan" second movement was written by Mozart. I thought it was contemporary. It was the theme song of a local radio show a few years earlier, so I hadn't ever heard more than about a minute of it. Anyway, #20 was my favorite of the several I listened to, especially the Romance (second movement). When I saw _Amadeus_ I felt it was so fitting for it to be the closing music. What surprised and satisfied me deeply was that when the movie ended, only about a dozen people left the theater. There we were, over a hundred people, just sitting there all the way through the credits until the piece ended. Edit: When I said "favorite", I just meant among the piano concertos.
The musical soundtrack to the movie Amadeus is absolutely exquisite, unfortunately Hollywood had to take a great man like Mozart and portray him as a lecherous pig in true Hollywood fashion

Faster tempo, good production to make sure neither the orchestra or piano part are muted when they are harmonizing together, playing like someone is singing the tune and accenting the melody in the right places...results in such responses. Mozart is hard to play because his lyricism can easily be lost.
Mozart is my favorite composer, and this is not only my favorite concerto of Mozart, but my all time favorite of all classical music, and it is played by my favorite pianist Martha Argerich. Yes, I have a very good CD of Martha Argerich playing Mozart`s concerto number 20. Pity you can not buy a copy of that CD any more as so many CD titles disappear with the fall of CD sales.
I loved this interpretation although there are many criticisms about the tempo and the speed. At the time of Mozart this work of art was mainly by a harpsichord and it could not be played that fast, butthe most important thing is that I felt so emotional and gave me goosebumps, even though it seems more from the romanticiscm than classicism. Martha is a gifted pianist!
This concerto was written with a piano in mind, not harpischord. Piano allows so much more modulation and it's used by Mozart here. You can listen to keyboard concertos by Bach played with a piano and the difference is huge. In Mozart's times, the tuning standard was lower and obviously you would play slower, because the sound quality wasn't as high, it would be a little fuzzy if rushed.

I played this concert with orchestra 3 times each time I lisnt to it I don’t what happen to me I cry I get excited I feel Mozart soul hunted me or I don’t know what to say
I really love this performance. It's shockingly fast, but it works and I love it. I just listened to Vladimir Ashkenazy's performance and this is seriously like twice as fast.
Actually it's not really *twice* as fast, it's an impression. However, you'll find on TH-cam, another performance of this major concerto (with Mrs Argerich too): it lasts 35:01. ;-)
The second line is supposed to be the first line transposed up, but a stray note sneaks in. I'd have to sit down with my piano to tell you exactly which note that is.
Bravo Martha Argerich. Even though this is not a technically perfect performance, for me it's still sublime. Not everything has to be flawless notes, music is much more than that. I feel Argerich has a deep connection to the emotional notes of this beautiful oeuvre. Studying under Friedrich Goulda gave her that insight ( he is my favourite Mozart interpreter to this day). Love this. thank you for uploading.

Adore the second movement...this makes the hairs stand on my neck at 16:20 - 16:45
.o
Thank goodness I will never have to decide, who's 'version' is the best ... since there is plenty of room for ALL the magnificent interpreters :o)
Thank you for this wonderful rendition!
If you like 200 year old music this concerto no20 should be an your shortlist....try compose such a piece yourself, its just to cry for
A tempestuous romance. Beautiful.
Maybe only for me why nobody told me that conserto musical sends angels around, pure relaxation, undeniable pleasant thank you for sharing God bless ✌️ 🌎🌎🌍🌎
Interpretarea Marha Argerch diavoleasca si in acelasi celesta. Superb, Fantastic ,o performanta artistica de inalta clasa.
What a fabulous rendition. Best I've heard. Full of spirit
Nice! How splendid! A young pianist regards many things as it leaning from her performance. Not only technology but deep sensitivity.
I played this concert with orchestra 3 times each time I lisnt to it I don’t what happen to me I cry I get excited I feel Mozart soul hunted me or I don’t know what to say
I performed this piece with orchestra when I was 14... still remember that day as if it was yesterday. :')
The bullshit with this comment is strong
I performed when I was 10
Trollsey and I agree with u
I did it when I was 10 months old they had to put my baby seat on the piano stool
So natural way of playing...The world would without Motzart and Argerich be different..
Hers is the greatest of all I have ever heard of this piece.
Mozart's Symphonies are Amazaing !! in special the concerts for instruments solo ! like the piano or violin
This is so cinematic
As of finishing this concerto I’ve come to the conclusion that Beethoven is just angry Mozart
Muchas gracias Facontí
This is by far the most beethoven-esque piece I've heard from mozart.
Perfecta y brillante
I really love this performance. It's shockingly fast, but it works and I love it. I just listened to Vladimir Ashkenazy's performance and this is seriously like twice as fast.
Actually it's not really *twice* as fast, it's an impression. However, you'll find on TH-cam, another performance of this major concerto (with Mrs Argerich too): it lasts 35:01. ;-)
+Ivan Greindl That other video has a long period -over 2 minutes- of getting ready, etc, and some time at the end too.
Shockingly fast? Are you a snail?
for humorous purposes check out the tasty wrong note at 11:15 :) love a bit of personal interpretation haha jazzyy.
leck mich im Arsche!
kiss my ass do better
hense why i said for humorous purposes..chill out
If you start a little earlier, like 11:00 , the wrong note at 11:15 will be pretty obvious.
The second line is supposed to be the first line transposed up, but a stray note sneaks in. I'd have to sit down with my piano to tell you exactly which note that is.
Fantastico! Braviiii! Grazie mille per la condivisione 💕
This is amazing.
Ein wahrlich symphonisches Meisterwerk.
Danke Mozart!!! Danke Maria Leitner
symphonisch !!!
.bravo. ..grazie
Martha Argerich исполняет Piano concerto Mozart 20 in D minor так, что вспоминается
17:38 I love it
Wonderful Mozart: Thanks much.
Those minor keys get me every time
Excelente! Muchas gracias!👏👏👏
siempre extraordinaria. Gracias por subirlo.
This concerto shows a different taste of Mozart , heroic and a kind of deep gloom
