@@DavidKen878 sure, I mean there’s many including even Melissa that probably got such a small amount for some projects still to this day, that it costs more to print/mail the cheque than is on it for her. However, excluding children from massive residuals when shows go into syndication despite being the stars is bonkers! They should get paid just as the adults and not excluded due to age. It’s like saying oh your 90, you won’t live much longer , you don’t get residuals, but your costars do!
Excluding all those who worked on the project when they sell the show to some streamer or platform because it may have not existed at the time is not cool either.

22:00 SAG-AFTRA member here. We are being asked NOT to cancel streamers unless directed but SAG-AFTRA. From what I understand, if their numbers go down, they will simply cite these new stats to substantiate their (false) claim that they don't have the money or the viewership we think they do.

As a longtime Sabrinite (is that what you call fans of the character?), I thank Melissa for "explaining it all" regarding Hollywood labor. I'm a journalist turned screenwriter - I specialize in rom-com features (MJH, you're always welcome to direct one... once I sell one!). One of the people I interviewed back in the day was the great William Schallert (former SAG president), when he was in a play in New Jersey in 2002. I've been in LA since 2014, where I've made a lot of friends in the industry and fully support both writers and actors. As far as future guests, I don't know if you've ever had Nick Bakay on (you probably have), but in addition to the obvious Salem tie-in, he played a major role writing and producing "Mom," one of my favorite recent sitcoms. (Glad to hear Beth Broderick is doing well; I admit to having a crush on the brainy, beautiful and magical Aunt Zelda!)

John Astin played Gomez Addams in the 60s tv show The Addams Family. Also, Jackie Coogan was on that show (Uncle Fester). Coogan's Law is named after him. It protects child actors from their parents that appropriate their money for their own use.

      YESS!
Isn’t that just in California-a state law though? Also it’s such a pittance, it really needs to be updated and increased imo.
Also, none of the kids that are forced into performance on those TH-cam or Tik ton channels should be regulated just as child performers. There’s nothing protecting them with restrictions on hours worked, educational requirements, mandatory breaks, and financial protections. It makes me so sad for those kids.

@@dash-x Agreed! I attended two episodes of "Mom" in 2014 and 2015, and the boy who played the son of the Anna Faris did not perform at those evening filmings for that very reason. Instead, his scenes were shot beforehand, as were exterior scenes and those involving special effects, then played back to the studio audience in the order of the script. (It's probably why "Young Sheldon," another Chuck Lorre production, is a single-camera series, not a multi-cam.)

The last "A" in "AFTRA" stands for (American Federation of Television & Radio) Artists. :)
And what happened with the insurance is, that the Board of Trustees (different entity than "the Union") didn't properly inform the membership that certain financial allocations in the contract that was put forth for ratification in 2020 (and passed, by members who could have benefited from that info), were going to have to go toward raising the health insurance earnings minimums. The Board of Trustees are 20 people--10 people appointed by the AMPTP and 10 people appointed by the SAG-AFTRA president--then, Gabrielle Carteris. Those appointees at the time are the ones whose actions damaged the Health Plan and caused tons of people, including seniors, to be kicked off their SAG-AFTRA health care. To date, new president Fran Drescher has replaced three of the 10.

Premiums for single coverage are over $300/quarter, plus co-pays for doctor visits and medical services. Family coverage earnings minimums and premiums are higher and mostly prohibitive in accordance with health care costs in the U.S. (Twenty years ago, long before the SAG-AFTRA merger and health plan merger, at one point yearly AFTRA industry earnings to qualify for health coverage was $10k/year, and premiums at one point were free.)

I don't know how they are going to get residuals from a streaming platform business model. Unlike traditional broadcast shows which go into syndication and ad revenue generated. On streaming, production is left on that streaming platform from cradle to grave and there is no ad revenue created to pay for residuals. I don't see that getting resolved.

    • @arthurmarshall6825
      @arthurmarshall6825 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

It wouldn't be hard to put in residuals. For starters some streaming services have ads or are considering adding a cheaper tier which will have ads. That aside residuals can either come from being apart of the inital payment services make to get rights to have shows in the first place or a portion of the membership fee could be set aside as residuals for the shows that account watches. And there are other ways to do it. Implementation is easy. Getting services that got use to the loop hole that allow them to not pay people to agree to pay people will be the hard part.

@@arthurmarshall6825 I think probably it could be on the level Spotify that when people click on a show the more popular the show the more residuals there will be. I will say though the old way of a rider getting 25,000 an episode and $2,000 residual checks are over with.. I think in the future writers will be lucky to make 80,000 to $100,000 a year and will be firmly in the middle class of what people make in this country.

This old contract was negotiated by your union so why did they settle all these years for those terms? Plus every writer and actor HAS TO BE IN THE GUILD to get any kind of work - most are not successful actors or writers because the niche of jobs are small and any newcomer cannot get in - so majority do not get paid work. So the residuals are for the very few that avtually get a job which is about 5%

I hope everyone is doing well. I would like to share the good news with everyone here. There is only one God. “Within the one Being that is God, there exists eternally three coequal and coeternal persons, namely, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” God is the creator of everything and is Sovereign over everything. God has appointed his only Son to judge the living and the dead. We have all sinned and broken God’s law, such as lying, stealing, lusting, anger, and pride. God is Holy, Just, and Impartial. That is why when God judges he cannot let even one sin from anyone go unpunished and that punishment is eternal hell. We can’t work our way into heaven and our good deeds can’t save us from our sin. The bible says all our righteous acts are like filthy rags. We would perish if we died and faced God with our own righteousness.
The Good news is that God is also Love and Merciful and sent his only Son to save his people from their sin. Jesus who is fully God and fully human, lived a perfect life and never sinned. He willingly went to the cross where the Father took the wrath that his people deserved and put it on Jesus. Jesus paid the price for their sin and died on the cross. He was buried and on the third day God raised him from the dead. God commands all people everywhere to repent of their sins and to put their trust in Jesus. Biblical repentance is a change of mind about Sin. It’s an attitude of the heart, genuinely turning from sin to God. Everyone who repents and puts their trust in Jesus, will have their sins credited to Jesus, and Jesus’s righteousness will be credited to them. Their sins will be forgiven, and they will be given eternal life. When it’s time to face God, he will welcome them into heaven because of Jesus’s perfect righteousness.

The problem with Sound of Freedom is not that it plays into your politics. It is that it is funded by “obscure sources” which are all right wing. Caviezel called Trump the new “Moses” on FOX news and Trump came out to publicly support it. The same trump who incited an insurrection as well as has been found guilty of rape, etc etc. so paying money to that movie is automatically supporting that even if the movie is “good”.

Sag never should have merged with Aftra. Also 80% of actors who don’t make the minimum should not be in the Union. I have been eligible to join SAG for 10 years and I never joined because I live in Cleveland and that would be stupid.

  • @Benjorunner

I have mixed feelings about the issue. Going into acting is a choice. Its not like a normal job with normal hours. Sometimes you are lucky and sometimes you are not. So when it appears that acting is not working out for you and you can't make a living of it, change jobs.... When I would be in a job which would not support me financially I would not start complaining about that but try to get another job which does. And in all jobs (either an acting job or a "normal" job there are people barely making it and people making tons of money. When this is such a big of an issue try to become the director or executive yourself.

It’s funny as Matt Damon has been ringing this bell for many years now actually. It’s bonkers. But it’s soo important many of you guys who are the 1% lending your voices and support to those who can’t survive as it stands. You don’t see that in many other guilds. 🪧✊🏻
I wanted to add: one of the proposals they REJECTED, was mandatory meals breaks and rest periods -increased penalties which haven’t been increased since *1961* !
