      When fans say momentum , orginally they mean maintaining your speed though section of levels and taking faster paths. The spindash is not momentum and it hurts my head too that some call it that.

      @@fnsonicrick In the recent times, when fans say momentum, they usually mean gaining speed while going down a slope. Which is called acceleration. But Matt extensively used it to mean keeping your spin dash speed while jumping. Which is like... Doubly wrong.
      So this video hurt my brain :P
      Your example usage, "keeping your speed due to good level design", might be related to the term "keeping your momentum", so there could be some basis to that. However, as I said, fans usually don't use it like that, they think momentum=slope acceleration

      So sonic 4 doesn't have momentum you stop holding the stick he comes to a stop right away. The classic sonic games however will have sonic slowly come to a stop.

      See, I get where Sega's coming from with Frontiers, but that game focuses so much of Sonic's abilities as a fighter that it sort of neglects to expand on what used to be his primary strength from the classic games all the way up til Adventure 2: being able to use his environment as a playground in ways other characters just can't. There's one part in Frontiers where you can run up the side of a hill and just follow the curve until you're running upside down on the bottom of a land-bridge. THAT'S the stuff I wanted to see more of. Hitting springs, riding rails, firing out of cannons, it's fun but it's also Sonic on boost-mode auto-pilot. You hit the spring, then homing attack the thing, then grind down a rail, then jump into a cannon, then hit another rail, etc. I want to DECIDE how to approach situations, not just figure out the specific series of actions the devs WANT me to perform.

    I'm at the part where you're talking about wanting a ranking system and I'm realizing it's kinda surprising that, as far as I know, there's no mod yet that adds one. I feel like that would've been one of the first ones given how much the community enjoys going for ranks.

  • @fnsonicrick
    @fnsonicrick ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I agree with some things you said but I do want to point out that the spindash isn't really true momemtum.. if you could run fast coming through and maintain your speed to skip sections that is true momentum. The spidash gives you extra speed at the moment. I've always thought of the spin dash as a cheat device since the classic games.

    • @windy3935
      @windy3935 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Momentum is the broad term, so the spindash, and especially super peel out and boost, are true momentum. Spindash being the weakest and ironic one since it relies on d.slopes to not only maintain speed (pre-LW) but go faster, while the other two moves at least maintain momentum regardless of surfaces.
      Spindash has always been slightly overrated, while the boost contrary to popular belief not only fits Sonic better but is better suited for the pace of his gameplay. The issue was never the boost itself but (how it's earned if you want to go there but importantly) the more linear-3D level design it exist in. Frontiers is the FIRST Sonic game to give the boost its first real outing/3d-space to stretch its legs. All that's left is decent physics and level design. The platforming level design might not be up to Adventure standards (not a fair comparison anyway and it never will be), but demo footage did show slopey surfaces can be exploited to "fly" crazy distances with power boosting. (Not to ignore all 4 boost games allowing basic level design skips by air-boosting, Unl and Forces being the strongest cases, but those situations differ a bit for obv reasons.)

    As much as I do agree about Momentum (I prefer calling it Slope Physics personaly) being cool and what gives sonic's best games the depth that makes you keep playing. I dont think this video really explains well why its Momentum is important.
    Every trick you showed had more to do with abusing spindash jumps to skip obstacles and while that IS fun I think you should have talked more on what momentum's role here is because it seem like you're just doing a bunch of charged jumps to skip areas no matter where you are half that time. you could argue that you can do that without momentum. Like if Sonic had a power up or an attack that would make him jump higher or something.
    I think its important to note that the reason spindash jumping is still fun is because you still have to use it strategically and be more aware of your positioning on slopes. Because sometimes this isnt Sonic doing a super jump whenever you want, but also his reaction to when he jumps off and in what speed (altho the speed part feel trivial because of the spindash's top speed being the highest you can get in this game).
    I think the cool places where slope physics are more involved are where you have to spin jump on an incline strategically to skip certain areas more vertically and not jump on any part of the incline, but you want to jump off the slope specificly when sonic's velocity is at its highest (as soon as you release the button) and on the highest part of the slope. To be honest tho there is one thing thats missing in Sonic adventure's level design imo and that is a slope physics moment where in order to make it you have to use earned speed thats faster then a spindash. Like the kind that you collect from a big down hill slope. However the Spindash in Adventure is so broken that you dont have to build speed because its faster then any amount of speed you can collect from slopes.
    I also want to point out that slope physics in general are great because they also help everything have a better sense of weight and impact by its enviorment and makes you more considerant about smaller things and the enviornent feel more WORTH traversing faster through as a result.
    For example uphill inclines slow you down a lot so you want to think of how to avoid them at times by either thinking more about when to jump and how to get passed them in an optimal way. Unlike a normal game where the slope would normaly just be considered normal terrain and skipping it does not amount to much.
    So yeah..."Momentum" RULES!, but spindash jumping is not all it could be.

    I’d definitely like the series to return to this style of level design. I mostly play through Sonic games once and return to them if the mood strikes, but there’s a game I played recently called Neon White that has a similar design philosophy of open level design and using skill and knowledge of the environment to find ways to take shortcuts and still achieve the objective. It’s ranking system essentially requires making use of these skips, and there’s a medal for actually beating the developers’ best time. It felt really satisfying to keep replaying levels to try and get the times lower and get better rankings. The game was also really built with Speedrunning in mind as it had a lot of helpful features for speedrunners and rewarded you for getting better times. I think it would be cool to see Sonic games also embrace speedrunning with more difficult rankings, collectible rewards for better clear times, and having ghosts and scoreboards optionally show in the main game rather than just being a side mode

    I'd struggle to call it an "adventure" feature, especially when these slope physics are present in basically every 3D sonic game. The later ones certainly don't give it as much focus, but that's more due to having other mechanics that they are designed around, rather than a lack of slope physics.

    • @AkameGaKillfan777
      @AkameGaKillfan777 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      More like they don't give you a reason to do it. I have to admit that even in Unleashed and Generations, you're going through hallways a lot of the time. There's no secret extra lives, rings or enemies hidden, and the way Sonic turns discourages it, even though you're required to in Unleashed to progress, but a lot of times it's more of a guessing game on which area you can or can't walk to, yet in order to get S-ranks, Professor Pickle literally outright states you need to finish stages as fast as possible, even ignoring enemies.
      I'm not suprised that it took well over a decade for people to notice that the rails in the boost games do have physics on them, because they're such a pointless feature that you'd have to either be just screwing around in a level for the lolz, or let Sonic come to a complete stop to see what happens. It's more superfluous than anything because you don't use them to speed up, you boost.

    Not entirely. There's a lot of sonic games with no momentum because you don't NEED it.
    Look at unleashed, gens, heroes, and frontiers
    They HAVE momentum but they don't NEED it to be fun. In fact colors has no momentum at all but is considered the best Sonic game in most eyes.

      Nah, he's right, but in a (literal) sense different from his meaning and the one you think that is. Sonic is at his best when he keeps moving (that's momentum), not when he needs to stop to solve puzzles or do precision platforming. (Not saying platforming is bad, it just has to be spread out far enough so Sonic can do what he's most known for, run.) Unleashed is one of the most momentum-based Sonic games in history.
      Colors, which has momentum (though not much worth noting), hasn't been viewed as "the best Sonic game by most" in years. Gens stole that glory about a decade ago.

    Gotta love the rhetoric that linear level design is always inferior to open level design, and that these types of stages are completely exclusive to one game each.
    I seem to remember 2/3 of Icecap Zone being a linear generic platformer aside from the one skip you showed, the inside of Red Mountain, Final Egg as a whole, Windy Valley's Tornado being a few jumps off of orange panels, and Lost World consisting of a narrow hole you run down, a giant Snake you wait on and jump between platforms for at least a solid minute, and the wall running room is just a puzzle to figure out the path you're supposed to take.
    You literally showed a trick in City Escape to reach the Invincibility Power-up and Chao Container without swinging from the pole, in Metal Harbor you can get to the top missle route quicker which is what I thought you were going to do, there are LOTS of separate grinding and platforming paths in Final Rush with rewards, and they clearly intended you to use the spin dash jump in Sky Rail as evident by the extra rings, item containers, and animals, which SA1 doesn't do. One of the most impressive uses of it has to be on Cannon's Core Hard Mode, where on previous missions you'd use Mystical Melody to unlock a secret in the following character's section, until the second part of Sonic's where you light dash up to a room that has an extra life, or the lost Chao on the 3rd mission, but on Hard Mode, they removed the Light Dash ring path, but put FIVE extra lives in that same room.
    I can go on, but my point stands. Most of these stages in BOTH Adventure games, linear or open, are still plenty of fun to play, and one type of level design never has and never will be better than the other 100% of the time.

Even amongst the more linear stages in SA2, they encourage you to check every nook and cranny even for stuff like animals, and you can revisit past stages to find new power-ups and extra goodies.
      In Radical Highway you can Spin Dash Jump to the area that has the Flame Ring instead of needing to come back after you get Light Dash. In the area where you normally take a bunch of springs downwards after first checkpoint, you can actually jump to either side and find baloons. The left one has invincibility, and the right one has an extra life. If you homing attack the spring ramp afterwards, it will send you up high enough to skip the section where you have to beat the 4 beetles, which is essential on the 4th mission as that stage has one of the more strict time limits, along with plenty more if you actually try to explore and experiment in these stages instead of just writing them off as "another garbage linear SA2 stage."

    You left out the most important part: Momentum cancelling. In the Classic games, you can get a more precise jump by trying to move Sonic in the opposite direction while he's airborne, which the Sonic Adventure games do as well. That paired with the jump height changing depending on how long you hold the jump button rather than the height being fixed I think is the real special sauce that makes the Adventure game feel great to control. The other games have momentum, but the problem with them is once Sonic hits a certain speed it's difficult to turn or slow down for more precise platforming.

    I really dislike seeing the spindash used this way, and personally would rather not see it in the 3D games at all. It trivializes the act of actually building up momentum because you can get as much speed as you want from a standstill. No need to take advantage of the nearby level geometry to build up speed for a big jump. No chance of missing an opportunity because you messed up and lost your momentum. And an even bigger issue in my opinion is that it's always used to outright skip the level. And I think that's the problem that a good ranking system like the one in Sonic Adventure 2 helps fix. People only care about going fast and forget that part of Sonic's appeal is looking cool while doing it. In Sonic Adventure 2, completing the level at blazing speeds doesn't get you an A rank. You actually have to master the level as it's designed, chaining together your abilities and succeeding at level-specific gimmicks designed to make you feel cool. Even in the secondary missions which are only ranked by time, you don't need to abuse the spindash to get an A rank. In fact, doing so completely removes the pressure that would otherwise make the challenge feel tight and interesting.

Originally this video was just going to be a video all about analyzing Red Mountain but then I realized that it's kind of hard to explain why Red Mountain is great without explaining what made the momentum and level design so fun in Sonic Adventure. In a strange way, I practically remade a video I made a year ago in the first four minutes of the video. The rest of the video was the initial idea of what the video was supposed to be.

I basically always play the same way you did at 9:47, and I still feel like the momentum is perfect. You didn't really talk much about how outstanding the jumping and mid-air movement is (also I typically beat Red Mountain in under 3 minutes)

    What I noticed about the physics in Adventure is that they're quite a bit stiffer and snappier than the classic games. This feels pretty great, has a pretty high skill ceiling, and apparently makes the game more approachable. However, I'd argue that it removes some of the push and pull of the Genesis games. In those games, certain tricks required more buildup of speed and thus were more difficult, but were much more satisfying and significant. In Adventure, most tricks can be pulled off with just the mastery of the spin dash. With some refinement, I think an approachable yet ultra-deep control scheme could be crafted.

      The spindash jump is also very one note and for me gets stale quickly. Defintley in comparison to the team up mechanic in heroes the gems in 06 or the combination of the summer sault speed conserving mod in sa2 bounce bracelet and spindash.

      @ModBros8434 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@elibonham4388 That's basically the problem I have. To get really good at the game, the spindash jump is basically the only technique you need to master. Some refinement to the controls would make it perfect, though.

    • @Summorial2
      @Summorial2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah the problem is that the spindash spam takes that mastering of gaining speed by your own but this is still peak sonic control I think frontiers is the closest we got to sonic adventure controls but it definitely will not be as good as the adventure game because there is no spindash in that game and I really hope the sequel for frontiers will have the game built around momentum like doing puzzles or having to use that momentum to get through specific platforming sections or else you won't be able to do it or getting up to high mountains. that was the game I was imagining because I am kind of tired of the boost you can't do as many cool things with it as the spindash so I hope they actually just remove the boost from the games and make it all like the classics but the boost can still be canon they just make sonic boost in cutscenes and stuff but we won't be able to boost in the game.

    I'd rather they just implement this into the mainline game after Frontiers as just a thing that you can do for some environmental challenges. 'Cause I rather like how Frontiers is basically just "Sonic Zones/Adventure Fields but as bigger open areas". Their literal first draft of Frontiers was a traditional open world after all, and that's what the first play testers played.
    What I don't get is why people don't understand that this kind of system can break a game in two even IF it's made with it in mind. I'd rather have a Sonic game I can PLAY rather than a Sonic game I can BREAK, momentum or no momentum.

    "Its power lies in the hands of the player"
    Yeah the spindash was fun in sa1 especially with the less confined level design overall
    Even without very much momentum (which will make going up slopes more convenient for new players which Im all for, id rather not worry about making it up inclines because I was too slow or stopped, I know that sounds nitpicky but not everyone grew up with sonic)
    Even so, I think frontiers will be the "adventure" of its own series. Unleashed was the big boost game and generations made that more simple but still fun in terms of level design
    But some of the spirit of sonic adventure lives on, especially in the hub world and now with some platforming elements rather than just running around with not much to do in the worlds (sorry sa1, your hub worlds were really just for the story and not too much more than that, and the chao garden)
    I would not prefer the crash ranking system where you have to barely make it in time. The A rank missions make sure of that especially in Twinkle Park. You have to take a skip in order to get that one, and even 20 tries through you probably wouldnt know that
    Grinding levels is fun, but I do like my forgiveness somewhat, also for the sake of new players
    In unleashed, that would work much better. Focuses a lot more on speed constantly with adequate precision platforming needed, its not as slow as adventure which doesnt make that game bad by any means (because you can go fast but you will have to look a lot more before you leap because its a fully 3d game)

    As a guy who loves Sonic Adventure, I really love your thoughts on Momentumn in Sonic Adventure and I think that the momentum of SA1 is so peak in my opinion because I think that you can always be able to go exactly where you really wanted to go, but because unlike Mario 64, Sonic Adventure 1/DX is still fun to control because of the momentum, but I still love SA1 and I really agree with your thoughts on the momentum feature that SA1 has but overall I think the momentum of Sonic the Hedgehog in the dreamcast classic (SA1) is so peak and so fun in my opinion.

    While I love Sonic Adventure's controls, I do have a big issue with it: Sonic's turning. It is EXTREMELY sensitive, especially at high speeds. This means you can redirect your speed instantly, which doesn't obey the laws of momentum, and it also makes Sonic twitchy and hard to wrangle at times
    Ironically I feel like Shadow the Hedgehog does a better job at this. It can feel slippery at times, but they widened the turning arc, which makes it feel more natural and satisfying to make turns at high speeds.
    So, in conclusion, Sonic's gameplay in Sonic Adventure is peak, but pales in comparison to Big the Chad and Shadow the Hedgheog.

      Shadow does NOT control well in his game. He's either too stiff or slides. The only times it works well are in stages like Lethal Highway, Air Fleet and G.U.N Fortress, where there are several stretches they put little to no obstacles in that block your way. I cannot count how many times I've stopped or taken damage because of some randomly placed piece of terrain or black fruit or whatever is in the way. The only thing it has going is that you can stop immediately.

      I enjoyed the Adventure games but they never quite clicked with me, I could never wrangle Sonic's control and he was always derping off in some other direction unless the analog stick was 101% straight.
      Insanely, I found Heroes more manageable (it also helped that it had way better level design), and everything just clicked with Shadow. Once I got the hang of the controls and level design, weaving in and out obstacles at high speeds while maintaining my momentum and gunning down every enemy in my was was some of the most fun I've had in a Sonic.
      Pariah659 has a pretty good video on Shadow that summarizes most of my thoughts on it, you can watch it at 2x speed if you're tight on time.
