My boyfriend is asian and his hair is very straight and feels like it’s almost plastic hair (this texture is very thick so it’s not allowing hair to curl). There was even a trend where asian people could make a loop from their hair and it would untangle on it’s own.
@Alcookie not too true for everyone. I know Asian people with fine hair too, curly hair...etc. just because thicker straight hair is more common doesn't mean everyone has it. Source: married in to Asian family, lived in East Asia for several years.

Hairs when mistreated i.e. not using proper shampoo for scalp type, proper conditioner for hair needs, proper leave in conditioner, and oil for after wash care. Most of the time people do not do these regimens wanting professional results with low quality products or incorrect products/use. I don't know her hair damage or what have you. Moisture leaves the hair with improper care. Meaning it'll become brittle and break right off, frizzy af, not cooperate. Depending on what the requirements are. Everyone is different.

i have really curly hair that i don’t know how to style and is impossible to really do anything with and having been severely damaging my hair for years getting it chemically straightened. straightening your hair also does way more damage than curling it.
