There is one factual error : It was not Jawaharlal Nehru but his father Mothilal Nehru who chaired a committee that prepared a report for the Congress in 1928 which demanded universal adult franchise (21 years). In December 1927, at its Madras session, the Indian National Congress took two major decisions in response to the setting up the Simon Commission: first, it decided to not cooperate with the Commission; second, it set up an All Parties Conference to draft a Constitution for India. The All Parties Conference included the All India Liberal Federation, All India Muslim League, Sikh Central League and others. The Conference, on 19 May 1928, constituted a committee to draft the Constitution. Some of the notable members of this Committee were: Motilal Nehru (Chairman), Sir Ali Imam, Tej Bahadur Sapru and Subash Chandra Bose. M.R. Jayakar and Annie Besant joined the Committee later. Jawaharlal Nehru, Motilal Nehru' son, was appointed the secretary to the Committee. Consequently, the Karachi Resolution 1931 argued that any Constitution of India must contain ‘adult suffrage’.

നെഹറുവിന് ധാരാളം ഗുണങ്ങളുണ്ടായിരിക്കാം. പക്ഷെ അദ്ദേഹം ഒരു ജനാധിപത്യ വാദി ആയിരുന്നു എന്ന് മാത്രം വിശ്വസിക്കില്ല. അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ നിലപാടുകളൊക്കെ ഒരു ഏകാധിപതിയുടെ താ യി രു ന്നു എന്ന് കാണാൻ വിഷമമില്ല. നാണം മറക്കാൻ ഒരു കഷണം തുണി ഇല്ലാത്ത ഇന്ത്യക്കാരന് മുമ്പിൽ പളപള തിളങ്ങുന്ന കാശ്മീരി കുർത്തയും റോസപ്പൂവും ചൂടി നിന്നത് ആടയാഭരണങ്ങളണിഞ്ഞ ഒരു കത്തോലിക്ക ബഷപ്പിൻ്റെ മനസ്ഥിതി യോടെ ആണ് എന്ന് കാണാൻ വിഷമമില്ല. ദരിദ്രരായ സാധാരണക്കാർ അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ വേഷത്തെ പറ്റി എന്ത് ചിന്തിക്കുന്നു എന്നതിലധികം, ശത്രുക്കൾ പറയുന്നത് പോലെ ലേഡി മൗണ്ട് ബാറ്റൻ എന്ത് ചിന്തിക്കുന്നു എന്നാണ് ആശങ്കപ്പെട്ടത് എന്ന് വേണം കരുതാൻ. നഗ്നരുടെ മുന്നിൽ സൂട്ടും കോട്ടുമിടുന്ന നേതാവ് ഫ്യൂഡലിസത്തിൻ്റെ കാവൽ കാരനാണ്.
അതിലധികമായി ഞാൻ കാണുന്ന ദോഷം, മരിക്കും വരെ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി സ്ഥാനം കൈവിടാൻ അദ്ദേഹം തയ്യാറായില്ല എന്നതാണ്. ഒരു പക്ഷെ മരിച്ചിരുന്നില്ലെങ്കിൽ ഇന്നും അദ്ദേഹം പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി സ്ഥാനം കൈവിടില്ല എന്നേ കരുതേണ്ടു. ഞാനാണ് യോഗ്യൻ, ഞാൻ മാത്രമാണ് യോഗ്യൻ എന്നത് ശുദ്ധ ഏകാധിപത്യമാണ്. പത്ത് വർഷത്തിലധികം ഒരാൾ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി ആയിരിക്കരുത് എന്ന നിയമമോ പാരമ്പര്യമോ ഉണ്ടായില്ല എന്നത് നെഹറു ഇന്ത്യൻ ജനാധിപത്യത്തോട് ചെയ്ത ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ചതിയാണ്.
ഭരണത്തിൽ കയറി പറ്റുന്നതല്ല ജനാധിപത്യം. യഥാകാലം അധികാരം വിട്ടൊഴിയുന്നതാണ് ജനാധിപത്യം. നെഹറു അത് ചെയ്തില്ല. രാജകീയ പാരമ്പര്യമില്ലാത്തവന് അതികാരം പിടിച്ചെടുക്കാനുള്ള ഒരു മാർഗം മാത്രമായി നെഹറു ജനാധിപത്യത്തെ കണ്ടു എന്ന് വേണം കരുതാൻ. മുകളിലേയ്ക്ക് കയറാനുള്ള ഏണി മാത്രമാണ് ഇലക്ഷനെ മാറ്റി. അതിന്നും തുടരുന്നു. രാഷ്ട്രീയം ജീവിതമാർഗമായതും, അഴിമതി ജീവിത രീതി ആയതിനും ഇത് വലിയ കാരണമാണ്. അധികാരം വിട്ടൊഴിയേണ്ടി വരില്ല എങ്കിൽ അധികാരത്തിലിരുന്ന് ചെയ്യുന്ന എല്ലാ കുറ്റ കൃത്യങ്ങളും ആ അധികാരം ഉപയോഗിച്ച് തന്നെ സംരക്ഷിക്കാം.
ഇന്ത്യൻ ജനാധിപത്യത്തിൻ്റെ നാമ്പ് മുളയിലെ നുള്ളി, നെഹറു. പട്ടേലിനും പ്രസിഡൻ്റിനും ഇണ്ടാസ് കൊടുത്തത്, മതേതരത്വം കൊണ്ടാണ് എന്ന് കരുതിക്കുട. ഞാനാണ് ശരി എന്ന ധാർഷ്ട്യം കൊണ്ട് കൂടിയാണ്.
ഇന്നും മരണം വരെ ആ കസേരയിൽ ഇരിക്കാൻ മോഹിച്ചാണ് ഓരോ പ്രധാന മന്ത്രിയും സത്യ പ്രതിജ്ഞ ചെയ്യുന്നത്.
രാജഭരണം കണ്ട ശീലിച്ച നമുക്കന്ന് അത് മനസിലായില്ല. വർഗീയ ഫാസിസത്തിന് വളരാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞതും അതിനാലാണ്.
