My family recently moved here from Wichita, KS for my husband's job and I'm originally from San Antonio. While I'm glad to live closer to the beach, it's definitely a change of pace and different vibe out here... help a city slicker out: I'm looking for family friendly areas with walkable city vibes.
I grew up in Hampton and then Newport News until I left for the Air Force. It was boring then and it still is... I have no desire to ever move back there.
I busted out laughin at the friends section VA Beach, without traffic, is like 30min, maybe 35-40 depending on where, which isn't a long drive, but I REFUSE to drive through the tunnel bridge unless I have to 😂😂 Hands down the WORST part of traffic. Whenever we talk about norfolk or va Beach, etc, we call them "across the water"
Just passed through on I-64 west, the day before July 4th. It was a crapfest with all lanes packed. This was around the exit to Jefferson avenue. It was odd because the lanes could get busy, but not that backed up. The Hampton Bay bridge tunnel can get backed up. It's usually best to move early in the morning before the sun rises to beat the traffic.
I drove the roads of Hampton Roads for 17 years....every day....from Kilmarnock, to Suffolk and Sandbridge. I don't think a day went by that I didn't shake my head in utter shock asking myself... " How did this person manage to make it out of their front door alive " Now....just a little history, I am born and raised Long Beach, California...yep...L.A. County. I also lived in San Diego, Chula Vista, I also lived in Portland Oregon for 18 months. I lived in Junction City, Kansas, and Shawnee Kansas, then I moved to Newport News, Va.... Biggest mistake I ever made. I lived right off of Bland and Warwick Blvd. and for the first time in my life, I feared for my life. I would be awakened in the middle of the night to not just a few shots fired, but what sounded like a war zone that would last for the better part of a minute. I would find myself hunkering down on the floor. I lived 5 miles from the place I worked at and it typically took me 25+ minutes to get to work... and that's not even getting on the interstate. And it is, in my opinion, the " Tailgate Capitol Of the United States " The people have a hard on with tailgating....and I don't mean 10 feet away...quite literally INCHES ! The tunnels...I AVOIDED them like the plague ! I would mostly just opt for the longer route via the JRB to get to the South Side. The problems with the tunnels, especially the HRBT, it people are trying to get on the interstate, and the self centered a**holes absolutely REFUSE to let people merging on the interstate into the right lane, so the people trying to get on and cannot, push to the end of the merge lane and then shove their front end into the lane at the last second causing eveyone to brake...DOMINO EFFECT.... oh but wait...there's more... One would think that once you get past the inspection station....you are home free because you are now on the bridge and there are no exits or on ramps to slow everyone down....traffic resumes at a pleasant 55MPH. then...THEN...there is a tame, less than 45 degree right curve that anyone can take at 70mph comfortably....suddenly BREAK LIGHTS....nevous Nelly and cautious Curt panic brake in fear of losing control...so YEP...another back up. So now you get through this curve...and you think your are, once again, home free....traffic picks back up to 55MPH all the way to the....wait...is that the tunnel ? you'll have to wait another 20 minutes to fins out as... you guessed it....TRAFFIC JAM AGAIN....everyone ahead, as they enter the tunnel...HIT THEIR BRAKES... never mind the HUGE SIGNS stating MAINTAIN 55MPH....nope....Nervous Nelly and Cautious Curt are stragely affraid of doing 55MPH in the tunnel. it defies logic. I moved to the 300 block of Malden Lane...where life was somewhat civilized...no bullets... but maniacal idiots ripping up and down Malden lane on their crotch rockets at 80+ mph, doing donuts, pulling wheelies...etc...and they were my neighbors. But if you want real fun and excitement that would rival ANY amusement park thrill ride... hit I-64...ANYWHERE in Hampton Roads. It will certainly be a white knuckle ride...I mean these motorist are.......... I N S A N E A * * H O L E S.........The Motorist Darwin Awards would shudder at the mere stupidity. I now live back in Kansas City, Kansas and, like anywhere, there are insane idiots...nothing close to good ol 757.

As a Long Island resident who has now lived in NN for 7 years I can safely say the perception that it is hard to get around Newport News pales in comparison to where I came from. Outside of rush hour getting around here is really not that bad. I can get to Richmond in an hour and VB in the same time if the tunnel isn't blocked. Once the tunnel is done and it's easier to commute from the Peninsula to Norfolk two of your "issues" will likely disappear - traffic and visiting friends.

I get what you’re saying about the Traffic but Typically in the morning 5AM to 9AM Evening 3PM to 7PM You always have that odd day or the summer time when everyone either is going to Virginia Beach or going to Busch gardens from the south side
I grew up here going back decades so I have the age-old, biased opinion "that it was better back in the day"... it's true in a sense but there have been a lot of changes in NN for the better as well. It's hard to fight sentimentality though.
IF YOU LIVE IN NEWPORT NEWS/HAMPTON, DON’T WORK IN NORFOLK/VIRGINIA BEACH!!!! And vice versa. I loath the 64 bridge tunnel and won’t take it unless absolutely necessary, and I live the first exit in Norfolk. Thanks for all the traffic that I’m not even participating in! That tunnel does 10X more traffic than it was designed for BECAUSE OF YOU! And who is causing the crime? Can’t talk about that. Raise your children!
The true hart of this Whole area that is the 757 is the support of the largest Military complex on the east coast, we have Fort Eustis, Langley Air Force Base/NASA research Center; not that Langley it is in McLane VA., NAS Oceana, Naval Station Norfolk, the Naval Weapons Station in York County, Cheatem Annex, and a quite a few more that i am forgetting. Then there is the Hunting area of Newport news is home to one of the Largest Naval Construction Yards which also supports the Military. But this isn't a come live in NN video like your others its pointing that yes we have a few bad areas but so Does Norfolk, VA. Beach, Chesapeake, Williamsburg, Hampton, Portsmouth and Suffolk. Heck when I was growing we didn't drive to that side of the water because the News channels made it sounded like a war zone on that during the mid to late 80's its better now but you can say that about any town or city.
Beautiful area(Hampton Roads metro) but I hated the majority of the people(uneducated for the most part, narrow minded, and just not very interesting). There are very little upscale offerings and there is just too many ghetto vibe people and surroundings. If you want to see and talk to tons of creative and educated people definitely do not move here. The one positive is that the cost of living is better than so many other places and your quality of life is pretty good.to sum it up the Peninsula is the land of Walmart and many of the people seem to be fine with that. If you like Nordstrom or Saks then you will be very disappointed and need to live in Northern Virginia or Richmond, both of which, have much more to offer.
I'd add that we have a relatively long cold season in VA. While it may not be as bad as further north, we still all wear long sleeves from early November to to about mid May, and it's gloomy outside most of that time. So if you want warm weather most of the year, skip VA. Edit: the biggest problem with traffic is the slow, idiotic drivers. If theres an accident, these idiots will drive slow side by side even when no one is stopping or merging.
I lived in Newport News for 3 years! Ugh! I lived in the Lee Hall area. Its was nice there but the surrounding areas were horrible. You shoukd mention the HISTORY! Theres so much! As a history buff Inleaened so much about our history living there. Also...the people...😒 Wow. Petty on a whole new level.
Hey Sam, 60+ year Peninsula resident here. A couple points - the interstate for travel within the Peninsula really isn't bad, barring accidents, of course. It's when you want to cross to the south side that it is reliably SLOW. When you talk about amenities, venues, etc. for the most part Newport News and Hampton just feel like one city. And the whole thing is ... ummm ... chill. That's the polite word. :) And no matter where you are, it can feel like everything is further away than you'd like; much like Virginia Beach. A little history - what you called the "southwestern corner" of NN is called "East End" by locals. I'm told that these days that term is considered a bit insulting but it's just a geographical term and it's as geographically accurate as I64 "East" and "West," right? It is definitely a rough area but there are some awesome people living there as well. Regarding Jefferson Ave and Warwick Blvd (correctly pronounced, at least by longtime locals, as one syllable - "Wahrk" :) it can be totally surprising how different the vibe is on each one. I will ALWAYS choose to drive along Warwick rather than Jefferson. Jefferson is business, business, business, strip mall, mall, strip mall. Warwick feels nicer, you drive through historic Hilton, past Mariners Museum, past CNU, and past a wooded area and cemetery, before getting to a more Jefferson vibe. On Warwick near the Jefferson area of City Center is a hidden gem - Yannas' Taverna, a totally wonderful small Greek restaurant. Excellent. Finally, City Center. You're correct, it's not built up but it is a GREAT place to spend some quiet or dinner time - at least is was pre-pandemic. Weekly outdoor concerts in the summer and a couple of good places to eat - there's a Taste, a brazilian grill, a couple Mexican places; unfortunately the Aroma's - right by the fountain - is moving to a location across from the CNU campus in about a month :(. A stroll around the fountain after dinner (and maybe a movie at the Cinemark) is very nice. Thanks for all your work producing these videos. 40 yr old long time resident here. Great summation. I travel along Warwick as well. I wholeheartedly agree, travel is easy along the city streets the vast majority of the time. The only real backup is on the last 3 miles on I64 right before one goes through the HRBT. That's why I chose to live and work in Newport News.

It’s more for the nature and living near water/beach enthusiasts. It’s a great place to live if you’re looking to live a suburban lifestyle with lots of shopping options

My biggest complaint coming from California and Ohio is the amount of off putting B list narcissists living in one small square area.
Ms. Banks, this may be true. In all fairness though, this area is pretty transient so many of these people are not from here originally.

I went to elementary school there in the 80’s ten minutes away from that school. This was a fluke.

Regarding Jefferson Ave and Warwick Blvd (correctly pronounced, at least by longtime locals, as one syllable - "Wahrk" :) it can be totally surprising how different the vibe is on each one. I will ALWAYS choose to drive along Warwick rather than Jefferson. Jefferson is business, business, business, strip mall, mall, strip mall. Warwick feels nicer, you drive through historic Hilton, past Mariners Museum, past CNU, and past a wooded area and cemetery, before getting to a more Jefferson vibe. On Warwick near the Jefferson area of City Center is a hidden gem - Yannas' Taverna, a totally wonderful small Greek restaurant. Excellent. Finally, City Center. You're correct, it's not built up but it is a GREAT place to spend some quiet or dinner time - at least is was pre-pandemic. Weekly outdoor concerts in the summer and a couple of good places to eat - there's a Taste, a brazilian grill, a couple Mexican places; unfortunately the Aroma's - right by the fountain - is moving to a location across from the CNU campus in about a month :(. A stroll around the fountain after dinner (and maybe a movie at the Cinemark) is very nice. Thanks for all your work producing these videos. 40 yr old long time resident here. Great summation. I travel along Warwick as well. I wholeheartedly agree, travel is easy along the city streets the vast majority of the time. The only real backup is on the last 3 miles on I64 right before one goes through the HRBT. That's why I chose to live and work in Newport News.

The Hampton Roads area is so boring.
It’s more for the nature and living near water/beach enthusiasts. It’s a great place to live if you’re looking to live a suburban lifestyle with lots of shopping options

Depends on the area. Close to any of the bases all be higher $800+. Lower in other areas.
