Grew up in Norfolk and this video tour gets most of it right. Ghent is a true gem and so well preserved. You can see the efforts toward modernization in Downtown (some of it successful, some not), which means much of the historical character is lost. Huntersville has long struggled with crime and poverty, like much of old Norfolk. For those traveling through or moving to Norfolk, also look into Freemason, Colonial Place, Riverview, and Larchmont if you want a historical but well-kept area. Just be sure to check the flood maps because he’s right, the rate of sea level rise in Norfolk is second only to New Orleans.

The neighborhood (buildings) are fine it’s the people of the neighborhood that are messed up especially at 5 points intersection near Norview schools. There are shootings, stabbings at Lafayette, Church St. and Princess Anne Rd/ Granby St/ W Little Creek Rd/ Hampton Blvd at Old Dominion University. Hi Mary may I ask where in the area your ancestors lived, and their surnames if you don't mind? My 5th G Grandfather was a merchant in Norfolk who dealt with a lot of folks at the time, he fought at the battle of Great Bridge in 1775.

You showed my grandparents house at the corner of Redgate and Colonial. This was back in the 60’s and early 70’s that they had it. I always loved that house.
I love living in Norfolk. It's a great mix of a southern charm with a northern vibe. Surprisingly progressive compared to the rest of VA. They could work on public schooling though. Just bought my second house here and I'm pretty sure this is where I'm staying for the rest of my life!
@@JoeyDNetsfan Norfolk is considered the Newark of this area but I feel it’s not as dangerous. For those from this area Norfolk is the worst place to live but compared to Newark it’s definitely not as bad. Street smarts go a long way when you move to any urban city. If you’re planning on having a family, the schools are better in VA Beach and Chesapeake but Norfolk has culture. If you’re younger and still party, we have a better downtown area than those other two cities. The only reason why I’ve considered moving out of Norfolk is due to the schools.
@@JoeyDNetsfan I'm not sure of the statistics, but I have no issue with crime and some would say I live in the "bad" area. Have three kids as well. :-)

I grew up in Norfolk. Been living in Chicago raising my family after I got out of the service for the past 30 years. Ghent hasn’t always been the “best” neighborhood vs communities like Poplar Halls and the Northside area. I reckon a lot has changed since I’ve been away. When we first came to Norfolk in 1975, we lived on Fremont St. in Huntersville. From this video, I see a lot about that neighborhood has not changed at all. Had a great childhood there though.
I lived in huntersville in Lexington street & okeefe Fremont street was behind my apartment buildings I stayed in right down the street from the corner store

Norfolk is a beautiful place! I been on a cruise in Norfolk in 2001 on the Elizabeth River when I was on a 4 day trip with my school. I stayed in Virginia Beach!
Ok, I watched this video twice and I can't help but take offense to your video. I lived in Norfolk for more than 20 years. I did not live in either Ghent or Huntersville area of the city. I am trying to be as unbiased as I can in my criticism of your video. My biggest criticism is that Norfolk is a very mixed community. There are areas in the heart of Ghent, between the Sentara Hospital and ODU University that could be considered run-down if you were only judging from the exterior. Yet those same areas are home to some of the best restaurants and the most friendly people in Norfolk. The same can be said of the Huntersville areas. There has been much improvement in that area and surrounding areas start in the early 2000's. There was an increase in mixed use housing, upgrades to local parks, and an addition of a major Recreation centers. The city is also investing 400,000,000 in renovation to the infrastructure of the city near the Huntersville area. I feel like your route was "cherry" picked. I won't claim that there are not areas of concern or things that still need to be done. I just feel like you didn't really show the beauty of Norfolk. There are so many hid beauties that are in truly unique places and you will meet truly wonderful people in all of them. You video presented a scenario of "Come visit us, but DON'T STEP INTO THE BAD SIDE!" There really isn't a bad side of Norfolk and bad things can and do happen everywhere, not just on the side of the street that hasn't been gentrified yet.
As usual, the ambient music score is sublime. Well chosen, and thanks for directing me to your home page which has the links to the royalty free ambient you use! I only listen to ambient. Fun fact- did you know that deer also enjoy ambient? Of course, they are heavily invested in the "Bambient" sub-genre, but you can't really blame them for that.
Not the nicest part of town, even though it is much better now that a lot of the hourly hotels have been torn down and replaced by beach homes, but the area is still rough
Shout out in Ov for pretty much 25 yrs. Quite beaches. Seagulls and fishermen!! And an acc.l air plane headed too the airport! Or too the military base. And a night the lites for the Chesapeake Bay tunnel twinkling. Beautiful.!!
I call Chesapeake Va. home, I love the Tidewater area. I’m afraid that the Huntsville area and Church Street area have been run-down for many many years. I think people have got to care before it could be revamped like Ghent was. Many years ago Ghent was falling apart needed a lot of repairs. Doctors started moving in and revamping and improving the homes and neighborhoods and now it is one of the oldest nicest neighborhood in Tidewater. Ghent is the backyard for a most prestigious heart hospital. Who doesn’t love a 100 year old home that looks amazing inside and out. Great video. You gotta new sub.
Locals call it Naw-fik (Norfolk). Lived in the Hampton Roads for 13 years and so much has changed in a very good way. Minutes away from the ocean, rivers, lakes, and couple hours from mountains. Perfect location for development and modernization. 👌🏼
Its pronounced Nawf**k. I mostly hear the "i" from military folk. Whatever you say, don't call it Nor(FOLK), if you want to pass yourself off as a local.
Back then things were so different, my dad totalled his car which landed in a boat which was part of a bar. They let him walk home even though he could barely stand. Back then you could buy a pack of cigarettes for a quarter in a machine inside the bars and restaurants. You could buy a shot and a beer for a buck. You could fill up the tank with a ten dollar bill and get some change back. You could rent an apartment for $40.00/mo. You could catch a flick at the Theater, a double feature for a buck

I enjoyed your drive through Norfolk. I moved to RVA last year and have two trips lined up this season. Certainly won't be visiting the "bad" nabes but looking forward to getting to know the lay of the land. The downtown part looked nice.
I just moved from South Jersey to Portsmouth, a short ferry trip from Norfolk a year ago. I have seen a few comments belittling Portsmouth. Portsmouth does have a couple of not so great high crime areas, but most of it is quiet and safe middle-class neighborhoods. The high crime areas get all the attention, causing people to believe it's the whole city. There are many single story home neighborhoods with very large lots, unlike in Norfolk where the homes are on small lots a close together. There is a area with million dollar homes owned by black citizens. I travel to Norfolk mostly for shopping and dining. I really haven't seen much outside of the downtown area, but I'm going to check it out along with the other Hampton Roads cities.
That's the cleanest worst neighborhood I've ever seen. The newer sidewalks and curbs in the bad neighborhood suggest the city gov is trying to keep it clean.
You did this city no justice at all. If you were trying to make Norfolk look bad, good job. How about come back and show the other 2/3s of the city that you missed.
I disagree. He was pretty much accurate. Norfolk is a weird city in that no matter where you are, you are within 2 minutes from a crime ridden neighborhood or a middle to upper class neighborhood, no matter what direction you drive. Unlike most cities, there is no right or wrong side of the tracks in Norfolk.
@@NickJohnson like hell it isn’t. It’s only defining geographical and physical features defining how the city is laid out. That’s an ignorant response.
Of course it is. That goes against your credibility. You can't be in certain parts of Virginia Beach claiming that you're going across the Elizabeth River. We're going to notice your whole show is cap! Not researched!
The most heavily gentrified section of Norfolk begins at 6:43 when he crosses Brambleton Ave. Notice all of the new shitty new postmodern architecture that continues all around Waterside Dr. until the stoplight at the intersection of St. Paul's at 8:48? Notice the beautiful old church he passes on the left, but everything else is new?
@@roscoep.soultrain5775 your right about that. They say that Norfolk was burned to the ground twice, but it was also destroyed a third time in the 80's as part of the "urban renewal program". If you look at pictures of downtown Norfolk before that time period, the city was bustling and looked like Manhattan. It was reduced to an almost empty field in the 80,s. Very few original buildings remain.
Im from here!!! 7 Cities! I was raised i Va Beach and Norfolk! Ghent is beautiful. I lived there for a while before coming to New Orleans for Med school and get to know the rest of my family . Cant wait to come back home after school.
I grew up there and lived there again later for a few years, and still get back a few times a year to visit. Your tour was balanced and fair but left out the other upscale neighborhoods of Larchmont and Willowwood farther north off Granby St. The beach area along Ocean View is beautiful and is now becoming very upscale in the East Beach area. There are still many neighborhoods that are affordable.. modest older or smaller houses that are still very livable and pleasant. You missed the famous Doumar’s on Monticello Ave, a cool 50’s vibe drive in with curb service and where you can see the first ice cream cone machine. Even the worst sections of the city are no where near as as most of Baltimore of nearly all of Detroit. On balance, counting good and bad, Norfolk isn’t a bad place to live. No place is perfect but many are much worse.
I really like the way you pan your camera left and right, up and down and not just straight forward all the time like a lot of these people who post driving around videos.
Nick, I was discussing this fine video with Mappy on AOL chat this morning, and he insisted that "Ghent" is pronounced 'Gheent." When I put the word Ghent into the Dutch-English google translate and clicked the sound icon, it (predictably) said "Ghent." When Mappy heard this he became very agitated and offered to fight me! I pointed out that you can't actually have a fist fight on AOL chat, he then told me he would "cut me bad."

I remember we all went to school in a uniform and this was probably I’m 24 now but I grew up in Norfolk parts of Richmond, and va beach in the early 2000s. From the news they say it has gotten better but who knows how the news outlets skew numbers just to make it seem it’s better than it really is.

I can't tell Ocean View is not cheap.. And still growing?
@@gabrieldavid9994 I haven’t lived there in years, but last I heard OV is going through a lot of redevelopment with lots of new town homes and apartments being built. It used to be rough back in the 90s/00s, but it seems to have improved quite a bit. OV always had a strong community feel, with lots of people living their whole lives there and a die-hard loyalty to the neighborhood.

Sorry Tom
I was stationed here in '66 '67 and '68. So much has changed

Agreed 👍
I agree. Outside of the 3 public housing projects(which he didn't show) Norfolk is pretty much "hood " free.
I’m sorry but huntersville is not one of the worst areas

Doctors started moving in and revamping and improving the homes and neighborhoods and now it is one of the oldest nicest neighborhood in Tidewater. Ghent is the backyard for a most prestigious heart hospital. Who doesn’t love a 100 year old home that looks amazing inside and out. Great video. You gotta new sub.

I disagree. He was pretty much accurate. Norfolk is a weird city in that no matter where you are, you are within 2 minutes from a crime ridden neighborhood or a middle to upper class neighborhood, no matter what direction you drive. That part isn't important
@@NickJohnson like hell it isn’t. It’s only defining geographical and physical features defining how the city is laid out. That’s an ignorant response.

I saw my great-great grandparents house in the beginning of the video on Westover Ave. How wonderful!
I saw a few Subarus in Ghent. Thats how you know its a trendy, gentrified area.
It definitely is especially in the past 15 years......early late 90s he may not have been driving through there lol
Ghent has always been old money, hard to gentrify what's probably the wealthiest neighborhood in Norfolk since the civil war.
Define gentrified
