    Great video. Thank you Lori. I was wondering if you would do a video on the subject of adding white and light values to a painting. Once I have all those lovely juicy colours... I have a fear of covering them up. Is it better to use opague or transparent whites? I'm really struggling with this and would love to hear your views. Thanks... love your channel and your art is amazing

    Hi Lori, thank you for sharing your knowledge n wonderful art. I was just wondering if you found the painting had bare patches after varnishing or areas where it's built up a little but it's dried, how or what could you do to rectify that?

      i also check my painting in the light to see if I missed any patches before it's dry and then I correct by touching up. same with extra heavy areas. It must be fixed before it's dry

    Great video - today was the first time I have varnished my paintings. I use acrylic paint markers and acrylic paints and ended up having no problems. I used the exact products as you recommended. I learned a few things. I did a test piece then wrapped my brush in plastic hoping to use it again after coffee break;) The varnish dried very fast - like glue - and I ended up running out to get mineral spirits to soak and clean the brush. I am guessing this is the best way to clean the brush after each use - mineral spirits - then soap and water? I did have the "dust" issue someone else mentioned - and had to carefully pick off tiny hairs of dust before the varnish dried - will try to figure this out for next time and maybe test my brush on another surface before starting the varnishing process.

    • @lorimirabelliabstractartist
      @lorimirabelliabstractartist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      if its a new brush.....you have to work it in first....got all those little loose hairs off. I even vacuum mine to ensure the hairs are all gone. Varnish brushes have to be washed out immediately or they will dry and ruin your brush. I only use water based varnish so for me soap and water for clean up.

      yes I always wait to varnish them until they are sold or going to one of the galleries that I'm represented by. you can't varnish with every type of medium on the market. You should read the label as it will let you know if it can be used as a final coat. This is a varnish that I'm using it's not a medium and can't be used as a medium. 😊

    How do you do the very fine detailed almost scratchy marks on your paintings

    • @tangokaleidos1926
      @tangokaleidos1926 ปีที่แล้ว

      She scratches the paint with palette knives and some marks I've seen her make with pencils which scratch and make marks at the same time if the paint is still wet. I've seen that she wipes the tip of the pencil off on a cloth each time she draws and scratches through wet paint. You can then choose whether or not to smooth over your scratches with a large pallet knife, scraper, old credit card, cardboard, or anything with a hard flat edge. You can use any object you want to scratch your paintings and you can scratch your paintings in any way that you feel and like best. These scratches will add texture when dry and then if you paint over them with another layer you will get different effects that will continue to build on each other until you are satisfied and stop. I hope this helps.

    • @lorimirabelliabstractartist

      lol mI don't really care for anythings shiny in my work so I really don't have much experience with Metallics. I also don' know how you are using them. Metallics are meant to shine so they would need gloss varnish or if you are into using resin. The other option is to not varnish it....or only varnish around the metallics ( again I no idea how you are using them) lol so that might not make sense for you.

I have a 40” square that I have put a fixative spray on and I really want to varnish it but afraid the varnish will activate the paint somehow that are in fine layers in some places, and blend it or smudge it in together. What do you think. I used acrylic paint and acrylic ink. And some watercolour ink too.

    • @lorimirabelliabstractartist

      Traditionally I think removable made sense for Oil paintings, I'm an acrylic painter and Products have come a long way with longevity. I use only professional grade material that is archival and made to last a 100 years plus year.

    Please forgive this basic question: What is the benefit of varnishing? Also, can I varnish months after I did the painting?

    • @lorimirabelliabstractartist
      @lorimirabelliabstractartist  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Protection and proper sheen that enhances the painting. That’s the short answer 🤣

    I have varnished small paintings before, but now I have got into doing large canvases. Your video has given me confidence to varnish on a large scale! Thank you😀

    after varnishing inside how long should you air out the room?

    • @lorimirabelliabstractartist
      @lorimirabelliabstractartist  ปีที่แล้ว

      That depends on what you are using to varnish your paintings with. I'm using acrylic and it's brush on so no need to air out the room.

    so, you start your painting on acrylics and finish with oils (or why you are using spray just in some parts of the canvas?)

      Nope...I'm an acrylic painter. I shared in the video about why I need to spray some areas first lol (Water soluble mark marking so I need to affix them first.

    Do you ever use resin to seal your paintings?

    • @lorimirabelliabstractartist
      @lorimirabelliabstractartist  ปีที่แล้ว

      Never I paint on canvas. Resin is only for solid surfaces.

    • @TaraSueSalusso
      @TaraSueSalusso ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lorimirabelliabstractartist oh, no. That’s not true at all. I paint on canvas and resin the surface very often. I have never had a problem with using resin on canvas. When I use large canvas, I resin the back of the first to create a hard surface so resin doesn’t pool on the front. It’s actually a really well-known technique for fluid artists. I expect that it would create the same opportunity for a regular painted surface. I did a large triptych that included painting, texturing, and fluid art. I used resin for the back first. It created a wonderful surface to work on the front. It was solid as though I was working on wood. Fabulous.

    • @lorimirabelliabstractartist
      @lorimirabelliabstractartist  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TaraSueSalusso I’m not sure why you would put in all the extra time when you could just paint on a solid surface. There are too many variables in painting this way. Also pour or fluid Artist are much different when it comes to how they paint. Resin on canvas also eliminates the ability to roll the canvas and ship which I do all the time when I ship internationally. And lastly I just don’t like my art to be shiny. So resin isn’t for me.
