Wish I had seen your videos sooner!! I am 70 this year. All my life I have dabbled in art. Now I am retired and love abstract art best because for me it's all about how a painting makes me feel. So what you say and do I relate to wholeheartedly!! I so very much enjoy listening to you, because you are so unpretentious. and know exactly how to teach. Your videos are a real treat for me. Thank you for doing them! How is your new place? I hope you are happy there. My husband and I sold everything three years ago and moved to France. We live in a renovated barn on my daughter's property. We lived in Connecticut before that. We live on our pensions and are quite content just having enough. So painting and music and a bottle of cheap wine, make life divine. I wish you much happiness on your path, and good health!! Respectfully Suzanne
I especially appreciate that you “married” the tonal values concepts with abstract composition concepts. You managed to make it understandable. Not a small feat.
Thank you so much for this video!!! There are many out there on value, but none showing how the abstraction comes together with the tints and shades. Keeping it in gray was a perfect idea!! Clear, concise and straight to the point. You always make me laugh in your videos- such a real, authentic person that makes you easy to relate to as an artist, too!! I will be anxiously awaiting the next video and practicing my "homework" so I am ready for the next one!!
Lori, Thank you so much for this. Your generosity in sharing instruction is almost as awsome as your paintings. This was a great lesson. You're a good teacher. Warm Regards.

What a brilliant tutorial! I have heard so many artists talk about value but without explaining what it really means. You, however, have absolutely filled that void. Looking forward to seeing more of your tutorials. I know I will learn a great deal. Thank you so much.

HaHa 😁 Enjoyed??? I love love loved it 👍 I only started abstract painting 4 January 2022. I’ve done around 12 canvases in a geometric style comprised of fun masking tape and splatter. I have no artistic bone in my body but suddenly felt the urge to start painting at 65. My mum can draw and paint real life beautifully and although I love all styles of painting I wanted to do something like you’re doing on large canvases. So far I have found it to be an obsession and I’m chaffing at the bit to improve. I love this style and will start practicing straight away. I gave myself 12 months to play and see if I was any good or if I could see I was constantly improving and I’m so very hopeful nearly 6 months in. And now to find such an amazing lesson with key information gives me hope that I will find my niche. You explained the process very clearly and I could see exactly what you were saying and I thank you sincerely Lori for your time and generosity in sharing your knowledge. Much appreciated 😁🌸💖🌸
Hi Lori! Thank you for a great demo and instruction on value. Can’t wait to see what lesson 2 is about!! So appreciate you for all you do and share!! 🥰🤗💗
Thank you for this video. This has helped me to understand abstract and grayscale better than anything I have ever seen. I know this will greatly improve my work.
This was the first video of yours I watched. Spot on advice. It really helped me to start to make sense of some of the issues I was having with my work. I have a long long way to go, but thank you so much! And I've now watched many more.... love you're honesty, and your work.
Lori, you explain so well. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Also, even your little practice pieces come out so sharp. You are such a good abstract artist.
Like it! A good method to see if the values in a colorful abstract painting are good is to make a picture with the mobile phone and change it into a black and white picture. I do this a lot during my painting process and find it very helpful. Thank you Lori for this video!
I am so happy I found your channel--- I was feeling defeated as an aspiring artist by the content I was seeing on TH-cam-- so many amazing artists but for some reason you are the first I understood -- thank you
Thank you!!!! OMG, I was just researching values yesterday and I am amazed you are teaching values. :) I have been struggling with deciding on a new series and I feel like I have artist block. I guess I'm trying too hard and I should just start playing with different techniques. I have been wanting to try some landscapes but I seem to like abstracts, so this video is a good start especially with grey scales. I have to figure out how to put colors together. I am a intuitive artist and do paint pours and just grab paint. I love how some of your paintings have such a nice range of colors that compliments each other. Again you rock!! Sherry, Campbellford
I actually am aware that value is the most important. And I can see it in other people's paintings, or when it's missing. But for some reason I struggle to see it in my own work. It's weird. So, as a result, I struggle with value. When I know there's something wrong in my painting, I always think the problem is the thing or object next to the value problem. Don't know if I'm explaining this correctly. I don't know why I sort of block it out in my own work. Thank you for this video. I always need the reminder. And I'm going to try painting in b&w
What an interesting video! Thanks, Lori, as always for your expertise. It's fun to watch you as you paint and I loved your explanation of tonal values.
That was the best explanation and demonstration of value I have yet seen. You are very good at getting to the point of what you are attempting to teach. Cheers. And thanks.
Let's start the bid for this really cool painting at a 100 dollars. =) One of my favorite videos, the value is so neglected in a lot of paintings, and it does not take much to really make a painting stand out. Lori I am a huge fan and it has been very enjoyable to binge watch your video's. I am almost caught up and feeling a little down because what am I supposed to do now Lori? HaHaHah Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! cannot wait for the next one, have a wonderful day. =)
Awwww you are too kind!!! I can’t agree more. This is what I notice the most in new artist trying their hand at painting that they value is off. It’s soooo important to creating strong work. I appreciate that you watched all my video. I extremely grateful. If I had more time in a week I would make two but the art biz is too busy lately.
I took an oil painting class at a prestigious art institution, very expensive tuition and art materials, though I was just taking it as a hobby, . What you’re saying about Values is right on the money, the teacher said if the only thing you learned in this class is Values, then it’s worth all your time and money!
I think Squinting the eye is more about diminishing the harsh lines when you draw. Taking a photo and switching to black and white photo will show you value. 😊
