    In 1965 my father was returning with the family from a 3 year tour in Germany courtesy of the US Army. He ordered a new car which was waiting for us at a dealership in NJ when we pulled into port in NYC. It was a black 1965 Olds Vista Cruiser with red interior. 330 cubic inch V8 and - yeah, he did it - a 4 speed manual transmission. Over the years it acquired bigger sway bars, bigger chromed/reversed wheels and tires, Thrush mufflers and a Hurst shifter - complete with decal "Shift as Hard as You Like - But Don't Break Your Arm". What a car to learn to drive on!!! My buddies all called it the Dragin' Wagon.

      Those are the best cars GM made from a car guy standpoint. They were beasts within a slippery skin that beheld generations worth of memories in a decade that car guys nowadays are still trying to achieve

      Sentimentally, I couldn't agree more. As a terminally-infected car guy almost 70 years old, all the vehicles from that era are pretty much "trucks" by today's standards. But it sure was a lot of fun at the time! My first car was a '55 Chevy - and it was truckish compared to dad's wagon.

      Thanks Myles -- he was indeed. WAY before it was cool to do so, he wore his hair long after he retired from the military. I can remember other people at church asking dad why he let me wear my hair long....he smiled and said "Look at mine? He doesn't party, he's a good student, he's got a job, he doesn't get in trouble, he respects me and his mom. He can wear his hair down to his ass if he wants to." @@myleslong5584

    My Neighbor had a '69 Vista Cruiser with the 455, when Grandma visted from Chicago, she would drive us to the beach, like a maniac, and looking out the back window, hearing that quadrajet moan at every stop sign, good times.

    My 1st car was a 1961 Dodge Dart Pioneer station wagon. It had a 410 hp 413 ci and a 3 speed manual. My father bought it new in Grand Jct, CO. He was told it'd been ordered by a Colorado sheriffs department. I won a lot of stoplight derbies against muscle cars.

    In 1967 I went to an NHRA National event that featured 2 car haulers full of white with blue trim Factory FORD race cars, including a full size 1967 station wagon with slicks, a 4 speed and a 427 dual quad under the hood... Despite sitting right beside a 427 SOHC Mustang sportback, most people in the pits waere jazzed by that wicked wagon. I recall seeing that wagon, the SOHC Mustang and a couple of other cars from that very day go across the auction block at a Barrett Jackson., for big bucks. I remember that day also for having been able to sit in a Top Fuel Dragster cockpit. Great fun at age 15!

    I remember all the station wagon muscle car's from the 60s cause they raced em and hauled the family around in em lol..I always liked station wagons and they mostly had big block 4speed transmissions and they ran a pretty good E/T in em as well..I've had my eyes on a 66 Galaxie station wagon with a 428 4speed and a 65 Dodge Coronet 440 with the big 318 4speed in it and they're both completely original but I don't think their 4sale but it doesn't hurt to ask every now and then lol..The 66 Ford has fake wood grain down both sides and it reminds me of a sleeper until ya notice the badges on the front rear part of the fenders cause it's got 428 on em. It's a nice tan with tan interior vehicle..

      You might notice he actually isn't just telling about factory cars but mixes it all together. It's quite confusing really as he says things like "This one wasn't actually produced in it's day but was the idea of a coup,e of guys that wanted to make it. They added the SS badges and put it the 445Ci engine and 4 speed manual. It was also available with an automatic transmission and a spoiler". So it's all mushed together. Weird.

      @joseph-ow1hf 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      True. I suppose the modded cars shown weren't really 'restomods' (modern running gear w/ old body) but imagined factory muscle cars using the original running gear. I'm not really a vintage guy, but if I had money to burn, would be cool to have a tricked out Nomad. In Surf Green w/ antique white roof to match my vintage Fender Strat. I'm more into the modern stuff like the CTS-V or the Audi Avant or stuff from AMG though I have to make do w/ my Golf Sportwagon turned into a sleeper GTI. @@friguy4444

    I believe Pontiac made 4 GTO wagons in 1972. Don't quote me on that, but I remember reading about a handful of GOAT wagons made during a single model year. Though heavier than their coupe and sedan counterparts, the extra weight was on the rear and that actually was a bit of a benefit in the muscle car era. The extra weight helped keep the rear down and let the tires hook up on the pavement. Those old polyglass bias tires were not so good at grabbing the street back then!

They were a beast, with grocery getter insurance rates.

    The 69 Olds couldn't have had a 700r4 transmission as they didn't exist until the 90s!

    • @ffemtx47
      @ffemtx47 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are correct about the avaiability in 1969. But, the 700R4 was built in 1981 for the 1982 new vehicles. It was the answer to giving the TH350 a 4th overdrive gear. Then, in 1990, it was renamed the 4L60. 700R4's were still made up until 1993. The 4L60 was REnamed the 4L60E (Electronic) after 1990 although 4L60's were still available until 1993.
      Confusing, right? Now, try to rebuild a 700R4 on your own with all the conflicting years & specs. Not fun.

    If were going to mention performance wagons,where is the rare 1979 Dodge and Plymouth Sport Utility wagons? They came with 318 or 360 V8's and were stripped down for performance with 3.21 gears. I do realize performance was relative back then. I believe Mopar Muscle wrote an article about them.

      Agreed, Jim. I think when the title says "coolest wagons ever built" it is normal to think of this as meaning factory produced, given that if you were just talking about what people might have "made" in their own garages, it could literally mean anything (like the ghostbusters vehicle etc).

The hottest '87 (or '78) could never have TOUCHED my car, and that was because it was built in 2006, haha!
