Southerners Road Greeting

  • In the southern United States we wave and greet people we see in the store, in the parking lot, even walking down a city sidewalk. On business and pleasure travel aound the country, I have received stares and even frowns for what would be normal at home, like saying "how ya doing" to a stranger. Visitors to the deep south often comment on the genuine warmth and welcoming spirit of southerners.
BUT WHAT IS IT ABOUT GETTING BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL?
Lately I've taken to smiling 😁 and waving 👋 effusively when I drive to work or around town. I tell you, I'm not feeling the love back.
Hardly anyone waves or even acknowledges my greeting.
Don't get me wrong, I am happy that you are concentrating on safe driving (not so much when I notice you are texting, applying lipstick or gunning your engine to "win" one car length in some sort of "extrememe sport" maneuver.)
Where has that southern motorist charm gone?
I know. The Traffic! It's real ... even on what were sleepy rural roads in those days from which we seem so far removed.
Isn't that all the more reason for reasonableness?
    So I have a request.
If you see me or others on the roads, even when you're running late for whatever/wherever, lift a couple fingers from the wheel and turn up the corner of your mouth in a semi-traditional southern greeting.
We'll all feel better about our day and others will notice.
