As someone who's worked there for a mere 2 weeks I can confirm a lot of workers are unfairly treated. Heck why you think I left? I nearly broke my foot a week in, I even had a doctors note station I needed to sit while working. Boss never let me sit once. That's 6 to 8 hours on a bad foot, and it took 6 months after I quit for my foot to completely heal.

It takes a LOT to make me LOL. But the OSHA comment did it! My grandson wanted to work for the trucking Co. that delivers to DG. I told him nope, never, not going to happen. In my travels around the Midwest carrying car parts to various warehouses, I NEVER saw a delivery truck parking that didn’t need to blind side into it from the road or around to the side of the building. ie. the driveway was always placed wrong for a truck delivery. I talked him out of taking that account.

Have you ever walked into a place got a bad vibe and turned around and walked out. That's how I left my dg job. The environment was horrible. It seemed everyone disappeared when the part time cashier came to work. Imagine working 6 days a week and bringing home $140. I felt bad but part time and still working 6 days a week. I've made more of a living wage from my birthday money than I did the entire 6 months working there. So Dg to me is where depression goes to thrive. TG for Family Dollar.

That’s the DG corporate mentality. And then they scream at the employees about why the store isn’t spotless and completely stocked when they will only allow the manager to schedule one or two people on a shift at a time. Can’t ring and stock at the same time! And Corporate and the District Managers are all made up of people who have never actually worked at a store in their lives. That whole “I know better than you even though I’ve never done the job” attitude. That’s why the turnover rate for employees is so high. On average they seem to stick around in my store about 6 to 8 months. Anyone who sticks around longer than that has the attitude that they’re not going to bust a gut trying to get a job done in a unreasonable amount of time because DG is too cheap to allow their managers to staff their stores properly.

As a city girl who is from rural Kentucky, I'm gonna let ya'll know that DG saved my home town. It used to be a 20 minute trip into town either direction, or you could go to the country store 2 miles down the road and pay 5 dollars for a loaf of bread. Or my Dad's bait shop could sell you pop, snacks, or cigarettes. But the rural DGs have EVERYTHING for cheap. I got name brand soda cheaper by the case than at Walmart in town...and they had the flavored water my daughter likes, and we got stationary, cards, wrapping paper, and some cute home decor. DG figured out there was a need in rural areas to keep people from driving all the way to town for Walmart. I don't go to Walmart...I don't want to have to walk the length of 2 football fields for a gallon of milk. So lay off the DG!

When I worked at Toys R Us, our managers were on us like ducks on a June bug if we walked more than 10 feet from a stocking cart. Even if you just needed to run to the bathroom, you had to put the cart back in the back first. And it was one cart per person; you were never allowed to have two carts sitting there and only one person working off of them.
Now that I work in commercial real estate and handle litigation, I understand why they were so strict. So I am completely confused why DG puts out all of the carts all at the same time--most usually during evenings and on Saturdays, when the store is the most-crowded--and never has anyone working on them. Their aisles are already narrow, but with a cart in it, you can't get through with a buggy, and often not on foot, either.
How they haven't been sued into correcting that behavior, I don't know. Normally I'm against most slip-and-fall litigation because it's BS (e.g. someone slipped in water IN A PARKING LOT; like, is someone supposed to mop it every time it rains?), but when I'm holding onto shelves so I can step over crap in the floors at the DG, I'm thinking I would not cry for them if someone did.

We have two now, a quarter mile apart on the some road in a town of less than 10K. They couldn't staff the first one, now neither one can stay open at the same time or for the entire day combined.

Spot on! Can absolutely relate to going to the "fancier " DG with AC(mine was about 2 more miles away). The closet DG never had anything I needed AND I absolutely go to Dollar Tree for party supplies.... DG is way more expensive than any other store for all their items! Except Dr. Pepper when they have a sale on it & with $5 coupon, cheaper than WM!

DG always has everything you need. It just in the boxes stacked 6 high on the carts that are blocking the isles.
If you find what you need you have to stock all of that item on the shelf. Then you get a $5 coupon.

I've found my person! I was always so grateful when they were running a special on Dr. Pepper and I could use the $5 off $25 coupon too. It was nice to take a 2 minute trip rather than a 30 minute trip to Walmart too. They had pretty good coupons on Tide too. I haven't set foot in a Dollar General since 2020 after I moved though. I appreciate having many easily accessible choices again!

It's like there's one dollar general in your area, and then two days later, there's two more on the next block. 😂

I love the "This was not here yesterday" part, because it's so true. They just seem to pop up overnight. Also, here in rural PA, our Dollar General has a hitching post, for Amish horse and buggies. Beat that, Southerners.

When DG opened in my little western NY town in 2000, maybe ‘99, I felt like a sweepstakes winner
Affordable NICE clothes even - remember? On racks in middle of floor, not just sweatpants and bras stuffed in an aisle.
All the plastic drawers and bins!
    Cheap food
    Cheap toys
    I immediately said-a miniWallyWorld!

When I was “really” poor I bought the Cloverfield brand version of Chicken in a Biscuit crackers. One bite and decided I wasn’t “that” poor. At that time my TV was via antenna, no internet, no cellphone, no subscription of any kind, and my efficiency apartment didn’t even have a kitchen stove.

I absolutely love Matt’s line about the stock room.; “it’s like an escape room except the theme is OSHA violations.” I laughed so hard. This whole video is a DH roast. A lot of what they said also applies to the Walgreens I used to work at except the line about the lightning. It was brightly lit so you could see the mess better.😜

The smell thing is so spot on. I went to a brand new Family Dollar (my area's version of Dollar General) and it smelled exactly the same as one from six years ago. What, do they pump that smell in like they do at Disney World's Pirates ride? If they do, what's it called? *Smells Like Cheap Crap.* So many questions.
I do go there and buy things once in a great while though. Every now and then you find something you could not possibly live without, and you don't pay much.🤣
