      I reckon probably not, on account of their low cost and small size (it would be pretty difficult to replicate this experiment with larger fish such as sharks etc.) goldfish are an ideal study organism to represent, albeit rather generally, fish in general. Additionally, if I'm correct goldfish generally do not need to live in shoals, at least not to the extent of many other fish like Tuna etc. (it would probably be difficult to carry out this experiment with fish that are used to living in a shoal).
      But, yes it is indeed fascinating to have our eyes opened to see that their intelligence is greater than most may have perceived.

    I find this kind of animal-machine interface quite useful. It opens up some questions you wouldn't otherwise be albe to test. For example, does the fish simply respond to the visual cue or have spatial awareness? What if you rotate the motion of the kart by some angle relative to the movement direction of the fish? Can it find its way through a maze like a rat?

    • @danishraisham1697
      @danishraisham1697 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@hendrikhardeman9832 humans actually DO own nature, to some extent. Domestication means that humans could tailor animals to suit their needs. E.g, much tamer wolves are bred more frequent to gives us dogs we have today. Lesser wild boars can be selectively bred till we have pigs we can easily farm, and can be done within one's childhood lifetime. Such wild animals like tigers, are unfeasible due to how inefficient and dangerous they are, or zebras, since they have no family values, unlike horses, to exploit. Such measures do apply to fruits and vegetables as well, so our greens are as man-made (by human involvement at least) as the cows he herd.
      While I do agree that some, if not at least half of what we did is inhumane (can't imagine, as an animal with somewhat limited intelligence, being raised as a livestock), a lot of it allows us to advance as a civilisation. Though if you refer to overly intensified animal farming, illegal poaching and unregulated animal shelters, they are indeed inhumane, and that is a concern which I do share it with you.
      Finally, it's mostly has to do with how it's kept and what would the animal feel. The outside world, to animals, is much vastly uncertain to them as it is to us when we're in an unfamiliar environment. Referring to my earlier point, I have a moral obligation to give adequate care for my cats (and some stray cats, in general). I'm all for letting them go if that's what they want, but other factors, such as how close our relationship is with the pets we should care for, must be considered.

    Nice I think I’ve had my goldfish for about 3 years now. Every time I walk in from work they get excited and zap back and forward from their tank. I talk to them sometimes I’m not sure if they can understand but I do notice that they seems to stay still when I talk to them (or myself I guess lol)
    They take me way back when I see them since I did get them from my aquatic science class back in high school. I occasionally see my aquatics teacher every now and then at my job so I keep her updated and she’s happy that I’ve had them that long, I had to sacrifice a couple at some point because I introduced new fish and of them was sick with ick. Most of the new fish that I bought died off except one. He’s a pleco
    and does a great job at keeping the tank clean👍

    Does the fish comprehend that the vehicle is moving due to the direction it travels. Or does the fish see the target, that when reached, gives a reward and the fish keeps bumping into the side of the tank until it reaches it and not comprehending in some way that it controls the movement of the vehicle?
