👇👇MD MERCH CLICK HERE👇👇: FULL SHOP: md-fish-tanks.creator-spring.com I used to keep goldfish as many of the old time viewers will remember. I had 4 in total. 3 Ranchu and 1 Oranda. I had them for a good year and a half and at certain intervals of say 6months, one by one, they died :( This really put me off keeping them. I've since done a lot more research on foods in general and I think I made the mistake of not rotating their food enough or varying it enough...or it could have been massively bad luck. Not sure if you watched and or Jennifer leopard aka solid gold aquatics videos but she had a great channel . Circular sand is good for substrate ... and you should try the gel diet for goldfish Or I would make peas with gelatin for them ... Also blood worms have some hard body parts that sometimes can bother goldfish intestinal tract I think it was rachel oleary who was talking about that.
There seems to be someone impersonating the MD Fish Tanks account. They did some kind of spam reply to my comment. It seems like you but the name has dashes and is capitalized so I'm pretty sure it isn't you. Wanted to let you know before I report.
You said that you tried the pea "shells" but it was to late. Um, I think that you meant the peas WITHOUT the shells. Right? Because everything I've read or listened to has said to make sure to take off the shells before you put them in the water. I just want to make sure that what I've heard is right. Or wrong. So that I don't make any mistakes.
@@cathyhendrix7552 I was thrown off when he said pea shells, too. You definitely don't want to give your goldfish the shells. You take the shells off and give them the soft insides of the peas. They are a treat/supplement for their diet as they help aid in their digestion and also help to prevent swim bladder. Graffic13 mentioned a gel diet above. I vary my goldfishes' diet and a big part of that is the gel food. It's very good for them and has easily digestible ingredients.
@@mermaid_at_heart213 Yep. That's what I heard to. But I also heard that it helps with constipation in fish as well. If I think my guppies are a little clogged, I will blanche some peas pull off the shells and throw it in. And the next day I'm vacuuming the tank. LOL
I bought a Blackmoor for my son as a present for potty training. He's now 17 and the Blackmoore is alive and well and has been living outdoors in my 3000L pond for about 7 years. Its a decent size now and has also turned orange. We're very fond of it.
I'm happy to hear you will revisit goldfish and how much you learned. They can live very long and healthy lives once given what they need. You learning while we watch makes this channel so much fun. A await your next fish adventure!
In my opinion, common goldfish are super underrated. They don’t have swim bladder and general health issues to the extent of fancy goldfish. One day I’d love to have a giant common goldfish/dojo loach tank
I’ve just bought a 250L tank for my 3 goldfish and 4 dojo loaches. One of my weather loaches is 17 years old so I’m wanting to get everything right in the tank before moving them. They’ve never lived in a planted aquarium
I have kept goldfish for 30 years, most have lived for 10 years or more, so they are water dogs. This year the water had an algae bloom, think pea soup. Cleared it just using plants and my goldfish decided everything was perfect for laying eggs, and we had fry, it was the most wonder thing.❤ spent weeks trying to count the fry to make sure we hadn’t lost any, it’s tricky and addictive, every time I passed the tank.🤣🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟
I was given 2 goldfish by a neighbor, they were just a couple inches long. Standard Comet I believe. Had them in a 20 gallon for several months. My father-in-law took them when they got too big and put them in a 40 gal which they quickly out grew! They were finally re-homed into a large outdoor pond. They grew huge!
Hi MD, I am glad that you are getting back to taking care of goldfish again. The very first fish I took care of is goldfish, I struggled at first and did my research, but they are worth it. I keep my water piggies healthy with quality feeds, fresh veggies they like, and most important of all the water changes. Have a great one and happy fish keeping.
Oh and a lovely easy flowing internal spong inside little filter. And a bottom tube draped heater at bottom laying in the sand. 2 many goldfish in one water course is too much shit load and piss load so just stick to 2 at the most. Don't over flow with a strong jet of a crap water filter nozzle. Goldfish hate noise. They can be killed by constant noise. They can absorb 4 times as much sound than a healthy humans ears, underwater so glass or anything aquarium is terrible. I hate them. Costly rubbish. Nightmares of goldfish not thriving in glass. It heats up and then they do die eventually and it's horrible trying to keep goldfish who are big in them. Everyone should get sn indoor pond big snd safe enough. No point otherwise. They like food, but not red leaved plants please! ❤
I used to keep goldfish.I never had much luck with any of the fancy ones with odd shaped bodies or eyes. But all the others I ended up having to give to someone with a pond. And I had a couple of three foot tanks and several smaller ones .They just kept growing. I had them for a long time . They are very messy but I love their personality
Excited to see you try goldfish again! They can be challenging for beginners, AND for people who have kept them for years. Don’t get discouraged and don’t give up, you got this! We know you’re a pro after all 😎
Hey for that green water: it might just come right back after that water change bc the tiny algae particles in the water reproduce so quickly once they get started. I'd recommend getting a cheap UV sterilizer to put in there for about a week and it will be gone. Some recommend a blackout for a week but that ruins your plants.
I had in oranda over 12 years ago. Lots of character. Well a couple but one was really was the oldest and my favorite fish of my younger life. I tried a store live plant and didn't pay attention to the other tanks that had various illnesses affecting their fish. Turns out I caught a bad case of ick I just couldn't fight it off enough for him. After that I stepped away after a full tank loss. I'm back in it and with the lessons learned and actually all your vids I can do much better for my new oranda and possibly another 2nd planted tropical fish tank. Thanks a bunch for your content. One trick to manage ammonia levels with goldfish that worked for me back after trying different techniques and testing daily I found that when you are aerating the tank and see the bubbles "pop" slower or longer than 1.5 ish seconds then the tanks needs a water change asap along with regular water changes. Results vary but yeah that worked for me. As far as the swim bladder issues I hand fed them sweet peas (I think you refer to them as pea shells) separated from the skin and mushed a little. This helped when they had issues. Some are more prone to issues but it can help.
I can't wait to see what you do with the goldfish. I have 5 fancies in a fully planted tank that I set up ages before I properly started watching you and picking up all the great tips about putting your soil in bags etc. So they've made a bit of a mess with mixing my soil and sand and they ate through about £100 of plants before I figured out which ones they couldn't really destroy and grew well in my tank and started offering up sacrificial frogbit for their all-day snack buffet (apparently this seems more tasty than any of the other plants, even rotala and ludwigia lives now, which used to get shredded in the time it took me to get their supper lol). I'm really keen to see how you set it up and how it goes for you, and pick up some tips for the next tank as my guys have just had 2 lots of babies and it seems some of them are likely to live. Made an absolute mockery of their tank while spawning xD anyway yeah, really looking forward to seeing what you do and how you filter it etc.
My common goldfish is 9years old I think and he is in with three shubunkins. They are in a planted tank and love to eat the overgrown trimmings from the other plants. They love duckweed and garden peas. Yes they are high maintenance and filthy. Definitely NOT a beginner's pet in my view, they are more work than the tropical fish. Once a tropical tank is established I won't touch it (except for ferts + top-ups) but a goldfish will repeatedly rip up plants, chase anything smaller than itself. They will need very regular (in my view external) filtration. Great to watch though. I think they are beautiful.
Frozen chopped spinach in a bag. You just throw in a little chunk and the goldfish love it. Peas too (those I defrost first). Goldfish are the messy moo cows of the fish keeping hobby! Love the guppies! Got a 100 gallon guppy pool in my greenhouse and a chair to sit and watch them😊.
What helps is that you can soak the pellets in water before you feed them. It gets all the excess air in the pellets out of it so they aren’t getting extra air in them.
I don't really care for the Aquasoil myself, and I completely agree that sand looks better than the black substrate in most tanks. As for goldfish- you should try long-fin Comets or Shubunkins instead of the deformed short-bodied ones. I keep them in outdoor ponds and they are very hardy.
I rescued a pretty little feeder goldfish several years ago. He cost me 35 cents and is super healthy and hardy. He just happens to hate other fish, so I keep him by himself. He is a pretty little guy. (Well, not so little any more) I named him Hannibal, like Hannibal Lecter from Silence of the Lambs because he seems to want to eat the other goldies with some fava beans and a nice Chianti. lol
All your recent dirted tanks have convinced me to try it myself! I’ve been needing to re-scape one of my betta tanks for a while anyways, so excited to start it up!
I do give mine some shelled pea twice a week, along with soft pellets and another Japanese brand of harder pellets which I leave for a few mins to soften. These together with dried bloodworm and they are healthy with good digestion and are several years old now.Good luck with the new ones.
Food is key to keeping fancy goldfish in my opinion. Hikari food as a main source with cooked pea halves and also the excess Amazon frogbit from my tropical tank which they then munch over a few days. Fine sand as a substrate is also important as this too I think helps keep them regular. I have just a fine layer on the bottom and you can see they do ingest it as sometime when they poop is sinks like a stone!
This is the perfect video for mixing up. If you loop the first part 'Now I've kept goldfish before in the past' and then sample from the rest it works really well. Some samples I like are 'duckweed' and 'the roots actually go into the pondsoil'. Didn't go for little green turds so much. It's a little cras
@MDFISHTANKS have you ever seen those bare tanks the do more in Asia for goldfish? its ether all bright green walls and floor or just a green floor, it looks really nice, great video by the way.
I have goldfish for the last 5 years.they are healthy and hardy but after watching all of your ideas on nano freshwater fish they seem like there’s more to choose from.
especially for fancies, it’s so important to feed them sinking foods. their swim bladders get so compressed in those cute chubby bodies that they often won’t develop a second swim bladder chamber (they have two) or one of them gets deformed. dr. jessie sanders has a really insightful video on buoyancy disorders here on youtube, you should really check it out.
I think you should wait until you have another larger aquarium to put your goldfish into. Or better still, build a pond in your back garden at groundlevel so your wife and kids get the benefit of and from them along with the local wildlife as you can plant up the marginal areas and boggy edging areas to create British wildlife haven's of insects to create better biodiversity of amphibians, birds, bats, grass snakes, etc
So excited for you to restart goldfish. I first followed your channel when you got the original ones. They are super hard to keep, I had to rehome my sweet ranchu when I ran out of space.
I have 6 aquariums and my biggest is 270 gallons (1020 liters) and it’s 11 goldfish with rainbow shiners, variatus platys, and white cloud mountain minnows. It is amazing but I do have what seems like always one of them in the hospital tank for swim bladder issues or something. It’s exhausting but also I love them soooo much. They each have different personalities. I miss your Ranchu Crew!
Twenty years ago, I bought four fancy double-tail goldfish, all were aquarium mates since they were fry. Like you, one by one they each passed away from the bloated swim bladder, except one. My white one. My son was an infant at the time and I sat with him in the living room one night after settling him after a bout of colic. I turned on the aquarium to help him focus on something other than his belly. He fell asleep and I continued to watch my white fish with the orange one. I saw my white one chase the orange one constantly and then cornering him and ramming into the orange one's belly. I put a divider in the tank and over the next couple of weeks, the orange one began to bloat and eventually die. The white one lived for 11 years in a 30-gallon tank and he reached over 12" long from nose to tip of tail. Even just him being in the tank, he did have a lot more waste than the other 30-gallon tank that had a mix of other low-waste fish. I loved the massive, draping fins and mesmerizing movements of our White Fancytail, but the upkeep of him was a labour of love. I want to get at least one of my tanks running again, but I am on the fence about getting fancy tails again, I am disabled now and caring for such a big tank and a profuse waste producer, I think I may go in a different direction.
Completely get you and miss mine that I had. Was terrible seeing them die of the same thing though, but hopefully with new knowledge, I can give it another go. I also have everyone at the fish shop now that can advise with everything which I didn't have before so that's great. Really considering giving it another go.
@@richardwatterson7262 those rules apply but it’s not as big a deal with goldfish as other fish. Fancy goldfish are too slow to harass the females too much but I would observe that rule with shubunkin and common goldfish if possible.
@@MDFishTanks You may want to do a bare bottom tank. They are much easier to keep clean and goldfish produce a lot of waste. You can still make them beautiful, even use tile on the bottom if you want. I spot clean my goldies' tanks with turkey basters a few times a week. Actually, I do the same for my bettas and my 5 gallon, as it gets dirty fast.
2 gf 2ft tank maximum. U can steam egg with blended carrot, broccoli without trunks. Any greens blended with whipped steam egg(Chinese style steam egg type). My gf 1 inch half grows to hand palm size with epsom salt to bath them once a month. And abunch of salt in the tank are very likened by them makes them happy and high ph helps
I’m in exactly the same position @MD Fish Tanks I lost 4 fancies over the space of a year - all to swim bladder disease. I looked after them religiously and it was heartbreaking and I haven’t had any more. Until…. I’ve decided to give it another go 1 ranchu and an oranda in a 300 litre tank. I figure if you under stock the tank it’ll give them a better chance. Thanks a lot for sharing your research - I’ll definitely be giving them a more varied diet. Fortunately I’m not short of duckweed 😅 Thanks for sharing 😊👍👍👍
Love these very casual fish room vlogs ❤️ Goldfish will not eat Anubias or Crypts in my experience, planted tank environments are very possible! May need to sacrifice some aesthetics to give them something they can nom on though 😁
I had similar issues with Bettas... both times I think cold air was the main issue. Often fish tend to live short live, because their owner omits something. Even with good maintenance and so, one can easily miss vitamins/fibres in fish diet or fail with keeping air hot enough for labyrinth fish when going away. I will probably get Betta again, but with goldfish I'd probably wait until I get a house or a gardening lot with a pond. I could of course replace my 160l tank with 300l goldfish trio tank and put it in the entrance hall, but that sounds like MTS. :)
OH! Can't wait to see what kind of scape you do for goldfish. I have two Black Moor Goldfish and they eat all the greens in my acuarium, even Java moss😅 but I hope you have bigger success. I'm planning to put them on a bigger tank to see if they destroy a little less the scaping
My mum bought a new home about 8 years ago - people left their outside fish pond with goldfish - they are HUGE now. Massive. Just saying - out door pond, no filter - cage over the top - moss everywhere - they are all alive and still getting bigger! xx
I keep a large adult fancy goldfish in a 30gal planted tank. It’s one of the hardest things I have tried. The fish loves to up root plants if they aren’t really well established. I don’t keep duckweed but I feed it peas every few days and it likes to munch on some of the plants. Good luck with your next goldfish.
Call me crazy but I always like plain specimens the best, there's already something so amazing and beautiful about the functionality of organisms that somehow even becomes more apparent if you're not distracted by lavish colours or patterns.
If you throw a few morimo moss balls in the tank with green water, that should help clear it up. This is because technically morimo "moss" balls are actually a kind of algae that grows in the shape of a ball. If you put a few in the tank then they will use up alot of the nutrients in the water that the green water algae is using, and it will die, making the water clear again. That's what worked for me with my little brother's tank when he had this issue. You could also try throwing some pothos plant trimmings hanging into the water, and when they grow roots they should do pretty much the same thing, but I would try the moss balls first. There's probably some product you could get to get rid of it, but I think this is the best way of going about it just because that's less additives you're putting in the water. That's just me, though. I've also heard you can turn the tank lights off and cover it with a blanket for a week or 2, but that could also hurt your plants and it might not be as effective. I hope this helps you, or at least someone if they read this 👍
I've had a comet gold fish I took from my sister back in 2012. His Name is Capitan Smooches and he is now so big I am going to have to upgrade my 55gal so he has more room to turn around.
I also feed my Fancy Goldfish dried seaweed, torn into bite sized pieces. There's a few brands available for aquarium fish. Not sure if you have access to Hikari brand over there (I'm in the USA) but I also feed my Goldfish Hikari Seaweed Extreme pellets. They're over 60% seaweed. They're marketed to saltwater fish but can be fed to freshwater fish as well. I also feed floating Hikari Cichlid Excel (vegetable based food), Hikari Goldfish Wheat Germ floating mini pellets, and Sera Goldfish Color floating pellets. My Goldfish is outside in a tub pond so I use floating pellets and some sinking to make sure I can see him eat some of the food. There's also San Francisco Bay Brand frozen foods that are good for Goldfish, Emerald Entree (shrimp and veggies) and Seaweed Delight (veggies only-vegan). I'm going to try them in the Summer. Best of luck with this new round of Goldfish. It's so difficult to lose any pet, even fish.
Hey MD - I think what you are seeing in your cloudy tanks isn't green water but bacteria blooms. Without a filter and in turn surface area to be colonized by beneficial bacteria in a flowing water environment, the Heterotrophic bacteria in the water column become a water clarity problem when their population grows rapidly to feed on high levels of organic materials dissolved in said water column. the Heterotrophic bacteria rapidly multiplies compared to the beneficial bacteria on the surface of say ceramic media.
yeyy I can't wait, I´m keeping fancy goldfish right now and they're amazing... My tank is full of floaters and plants... I would recommend putting in some fast growing stems.... because they love to munch on them and they grow super fast.... and If I could I would also recommend some peace Lillies or pathos to really just polish the water.. sine fancy goldfish are such huge ammonia producers... again I CANT WAIT... this is gonna be great!
My oldest and best loved goldfish Calico Jack died out of nowhere and was followed by another a few weeks later. I don’t have the heart to keep anymore. I’ve got two lads left, will give them the best life I can, but when they’re gone I’m out of goldfish for awhile even after years and years of enjoying them.
I don't know if you ever answer questions here or perhaps other viewers do, but I'm new to the hobby and have my first planted tank. From what I've read/seen, in order to have the reds on red plants you need higher lights, but anytime I turn my lights up or leave them on for longer, I get black beard algae. If I turn them back down and the algae stops going crazy, then the reds fade. No CO2 in my tank, specifically I have rose Amazon swords and red root floaters in there where I don't seem to be able to get reds without algae. Root tabs in gravel substrate for the swords and Leaf Zone for the water column feeders (also in tank, Anubias, lucky bamboo, pothos, Marimo moss balls). Any ideas on how I can get the reds to pop without the algae going nuts would be super appreciated! Some people in a fish group were saying I needed CO2, but you always seem to get great colors without it!
Java fern, anubias, and valisneria are the only things I've tried that work really well for goldfish. Java fern especially can't be destroyed, I've had them bite into the other 2, they just survive unlike everything else. You can have a lot of plants like pothos above the water line as well
They do best in ponds in my opinion. This even applies to fancies which are more resilient than people give them credit for. One of the best things you can do is cultivate algae for them to graze on.
Absolutely agree. I have 4 goldfish that shops usually sell for feeding other animals. They've thrived in a modest pond for iver 4 years now so. Ive a lily plant in and they winter over in a climate that can vary severely. Deeper ponds are crucial. They're so lovely and vibrant. I have a filter in it in the summer. Frogs enjoy it as well. The 4 fish are vibrant and seem content. I will occasionally feed them pond pellets, but they get most ofnthe nutrientd from nature. The pump is to just keep the water from becoming stagnant, and I don't have a surface sprayer or spout. So far so good like! I do hope this goldie tank brings joy though. They have such personalities Good luck
Even pond fish come up to eat the pellets from your had. All of them have great personalitys. Must admit I do love a Blackmoor but from the 90s, Comets are creaping into top spot now.
My cousins had an absolutely massive and ancient goldfish, their dad got tired of it in the house when it was a couple years old and put the tank on the back porch but they kept caring for it. The tank was always so dirty with bug and leaf debris, but the goldfish liked it and got massive eating mosquito larvae, etc. Mind you, this was in a warm part of the world where it never drops below 55 degrees Fahrenheit on the chilliest of winter days, so I don't suggest patio goldfish for everyone, but they ARE a hardy pond fish. (This was a free carnival fish, btw, and honestly it lived longer than any fish I've known). Anyways, he died at around age 14 because my uncle felt bad for putting it outside and slowly started cleaning his tank. I think he might have shocked it by doing too much water change too fast, but it was also nearing the end of it's natural life so it may have just been time... but I would like to think that a goldfish in a muck pond is immortal :)
Weei goldfish again 🥳 You got me started with goldfish again in a planted aquarium, its so beautiful and the fish loves it 🤩 350L aquarium just for them ans a lot of plants and shimp 😁
MD- Feel free to come and see me a pick some goldfish for your new tank. I breed and show goldfish and keep lots of different varieties so you can get a great mix of types. You can also film my fish house if you like 👍🏻
Oh wow. I definitely would have...but I've already got them now. but can I ask your opinion on feeding. Lots are saying gulping from the surface is what gives swim bladder issues. Others say that's a myth and is completely separate but people jump to conclusions because it makes sense in their mind. What's your thoughts. Also duckweed, good? or bad? and top tips for feeding and food in general for fancy goldfish. Thanks mate
Dude, you just made me set up that low tech anubias, bucephalandra, java fern scape last week. Now I'm waiting to be inspired again by this goldfish project :) sorry for my broken english hehe
Same happened to me…..had 3 bepeatiful ranchu’s I bought as babies. They got huge over 4 years and then one buy one got swim bladder issues. I tried feeding peas and greens but they would never eat them. It’s amazing how friendly goldfish actually are…..
Goldfish is beyond a pet but also a culture symbol. If you dig more about goldfish naming origins and why breeders prefer a certain body shape, you will a gain a new perspective of the world.
Goldfish are like water pugs. to many issues for me to deal with. I've been keeping then off and on for the last 10 years and they're just too much up keep for me
Green water is caused by ammonia, usually comes in new “fish in cycle” aquariums where there is a chemical imbalance, UV light units will help clear the suspended algae but don’t get to the route of the problem. For a no filter tank the livestock was probably added to quickly before the plants can get hold and counter act the waste. Maybe temporarily move the livestock out and focus on plant growth to get it balanced. 👍
MD - a bit off topic, but would love to see you scape an Mbuna Cichlid tank WITH plants and driftwood....basically, combining the aquascape motif with an mbuna cichlid setup. I love your stuff, but my water parameters relegate me to either RO or Cichlids. I'd love to see what you can do with a hard water tank. Would love to learn from that!
Hey MD. I live in Hemyock and I’ve got three adult goldfish that got dumped on me that I would like to pass on. If you’re interested let me know I’m struggling to look after them properly and it would be kinder to let them go. I can meet you at the shop anytime! Cheers Pete
HEY MD - Goldfish KEYS - 1. daily water changes. 2. Fast them 1 day per week 3. DO NOT OVERFEED! Small feedings twice per day. 3. DO NOT feed flake. 4. Use fast sinking algae based pellets (Omega One makes a good one) 5. I hate to repeat it - DO NOT FEED FLAKES - it encourages gulping at the surface. 5. If you really really want success - use or make a Goldfish GEL food.
The green water might be beginning algea. With the pond soil there might be lots of nutrients. Put your monstera plant next to it and let it drink it all up via its air roots 👍
I wouldn't do bloodworms - They love earthworms - and this is a much more normal live food for them. I grow them for my fish in my compost pile. You can feed little fish the baby worms. I have 10 comet goldfish. They are very big and around 8 years old. I feed them boiled green peas (shelled) every other day as well duckweed. When they get pelllets I feed them a high protein native fish pellet. 2-3 large pellets per fish. I also have a number of baby comets in the pond too - for these I feed them the duck weed and cos lettuce.
I have 4 fantail goldfish in a planted tank, they are messy and the amount of poop doesn’t get used up by the plants so I’m battling a bit of green water, too much nutrients. But I have a mix of plants, some they don’t eat,, Anubis. Java ferns. And some they do, frogbit and limnaphilia. So they get some greens naturally. they are more work then the rest of my tanks but they have grown well and are super entertaining
green water is common in the pond hobby. it's free-floating algae in the water column. feeding so many nutrients to your plants may also be feeding algae.
I started fishkeeping with goldfish, as a learning curve, and to try out. Well I put in lot of research, got my tank perfect, and I was literally expecting them to last less than a year (being new at the time) I fed them boiled broccoli, duck weed, blood worms, flakes and pellets, for years.. YEARS! They were monsters towards the end of their life! They’re beautiful little creatures, hope you enjoy them 😁
@@AngryDad-13 That’s great how long they lived! I acquired two corys in 2018 when my grandpa died. I’m not sure how old they were when I inherited them but they are both still alive! I redid my 30 gallon tank just to make them happier. I find the older they get, the more I dote in them. Thankfully, they don’t grow bigger like goldfish do!!
@@elly7199 honestly they’re awesome, especially when you have them for many years! I’m currently dealing with guppies, got some absolutely beautiful ones, and now, 40 babies, round abouts!
@@AngryDad-13 I’m into guppies as well! I don’t have the usual breeding setup of several smaller tanks. Instead, I have a few smaller tanks and one 30 gallon for the boys, one 30g for the girls and one 30g as a breeding shrimp tank where I will put fry in (sometimes I want to slow down the shrimp breeding and it’s healthy for the fry to eat the baby shrimp). I haven’t sold any guppies yet because I am waiting to see how they develop as they grow. I love watching the babies grow up!
Just sold my 500 litre Geophagus tank for a 200 litre juwel setup with 3 fantails instead. More to do with coming electricty bills and potential powercuts.
Pellets and flakes are detrimental to the goldfish digestive track. I learned this the hard way. I switched to feeding exclusively gel food (goldfish repashy) and I have had so much better results with them and swim bladder issues. My oldest goldfish is 6 years old going on 7. I've learned so much throughout the years and that is my biggest recommendation. Ditch the flakes and pellets entirely!

I used to keep goldfish as many of the old time viewers will remember. Either way, I really want to give them another go...

Not sure if you watched and or Jennifer leopard aka solid gold aquatics videos but she had a great channel .
Circular sand is good for substrate ... and you should try the gel diet for goldfish
Or I would make peas with gelatin for them ...
Wow, that's amazing!
How it turned orange? 😂
Update! Said fish passed away this spring. 😭 I reckon it was around 16 years old. Over half it's life was spent outdoors, in the pond. Obviously.
@@raf1717 Goldfish change colors as they age.. black is a transitioning color that very rarely lasts long
I'm happy to hear you will revisit goldfish and how much you learned.
They're great. We had a 20 year old common goldfish that was around a foot long. Great fish, would eat anything he could fit in his mouth though haha.
Yes I was thinking the same thing
My comet goldfish had swim bladder issue and died.
I would have been so excited! I have had 3 generations of swordtails and I just love the little guys.
Got a 100 gallon guppy pool in my greenhouse and a chair to sit and watch them😊.
sounds awesome.
What helps is that you can soak the pellets in water before you feed them. It gets all the excess air in the pellets out of it so they aren’t getting extra air in them.
I had a gold fish for 17 years it must have been about 19 years old when it died.
thats insane Barry. Good job.
@@MDFishTanks It got an infection on a fin and I couldn't get rid of it I tried everything and nothing worked.
Carp have a very long lifespan, what a great long life your fish had. I hope he had a few tank mates.
@ Barry Evans I too had a bunch of sarasa (won at fairgrounds) goldfish for roughly 18yrs plus years and enormous when they died!
I don't really care for the Aquasoil myself, and I completely agree that sand looks better than the black substrate in most tanks. As for goldfish- you should try long-fin Comets or Shubunkins instead of the deformed short-bodied ones. I keep them in outdoor ponds and they are very hardy.
I'm not a fan of some goldfish variants either.
I LOVE the look of comets and shubunkins, especially the latter. Haven't seen the long-finned ones yet.
I had some Shubunkins when I was a child. They were very healthy, and happy and lived for years before I go to a school away from my home.
I rescued a pretty little feeder goldfish several years ago. He cost me 35 cents and is super healthy and hardy. He just happens to hate other fish, so I keep him by himself. He is a pretty little guy. (Well, not so little any more) I named him Hannibal, like Hannibal Lecter from Silence of the Lambs because he seems to want to eat the other goldies with some fava beans and a nice Chianti. lol
@@mermaid_at_heart213 Sounds like a convict cichlid I had. His name was Jeffrey, as in Dahmer. LOL
All your recent dirted tanks have convinced me to try it myself! I’ve been needing to re-scape one of my betta tanks for a while anyways, so excited to start it up!
Your tanks are just so beautiful! I don’t have the space to play around with different tanks but I love my guppies. They are just the happiest fish!
Brine shrimp and boiled vegetables are really good for Goldie’s gut too. Good luck when you get your new ones. ❤
I like the original Endler too, I've always been drawn to random colouring. Looking forward to seeing your goldfish tank in action
I have goldfish for the last 5 years.they are healthy and hardy but after watching all of your ideas on nano freshwater fish they seem like there’s more to choose from.
That rainbow one is beyond beautiful 😍 just one of the many prime examples of the beauty nature gives!
especially for fancies, it’s so important to feed them sinking foods. their swim bladders get so compressed in those cute chubby bodies that they often won’t develop a second swim bladder chamber (they have two) or one of them gets deformed. dr. jessie sanders has a really insightful video on buoyancy disorders here on youtube, you should really check it out.
That standard endler is my favourite because he was from the sump , coolest backstory
I miss your Ranchu Crew!
my grandmother kept some feeder minnows one of her kids won at a carnival, they lived for around 24 years
Love the content brother, keep doing what youre doing blessing my eyes everytime i see a video. May not hear it a lot but Proud of you bro
One of the best aquascapist & fishkeeper in my opinion.
Loving the little update vids. Would love to see maintenance video with no talking just background music and trimming, water changes etc
I absolutely adore my goldfish. Find so much love in them vs smaller fish. There so interactive :)
Completely get you and miss mine that I had. Was terrible seeing them die of the same thing though, but hopefully with new knowledge, I can give it another go. I also have everyone at the fish shop now that can advise with everything which I didn't have before so that's great. Really considering giving it another go.
Hi, im thinking of getting some. Are there rules about mixing gender in goldfish? Sort of 1 male for 3 female maybe (?)
Only problem with goldfish is that they’re so inbred and kind of dumb
I look forward to following your progress with the new goldfish. 😊
I’m in exactly the same position @MD Fish Tanks
I lost 4 fancies over the space of a year - all to swim bladder disease.
Fortunately I’m not short of duckweed 😅
Thanks for sharing 😊👍👍👍
I just recently bought an Oranda Goldfish! Ember kind of made me fall in love!!
Oh your actually doing it!!! Good luck.
Waiting for Timmy!!!!!
Love these very casual fish room vlogs ❤️
Goldfish will not eat Anubias or Crypts in my experience, planted tank environments are very possible! May need to sacrifice some aesthetics to give them something they can nom on though 😁
I got 3 fancies about 3 months ago, and they are amazing! Great to see you have goldies agian
Yup classic endlers are just beautiful with those neon colours, yes the cobra variety are cool but i would still stick with the classic one or koi
Yeah I agree, I prefer the original standard colour endler, they remind me of an 80s shell suit, there also a bit harder to get these days.
Great update. Can't wait for the gold fish setup. Thanks MD and Happy Thanksgiving.
My favorite is the original color Endler, I’m a sucker for the originals! But I especially like the lyre tails so you have my ultimate favorite.
Excited to see your new planted tank for the gold fish. I have goldfish and want to learn how to do a proper set up.
Breeding live bearers are very easy your plan is the right way. Thanks for the gold fish tips I have had the same problem.
So many people ask me why I don't keep glofish but I keep green neon rasboras and I say that glofish aren't naturally bred and kept.
I hope this helps you, or at least someone if they read this 👍
It looks spot on mate. Look at you pushing your own boundaries 😂. Good work. Very contemporary
The tip with on separating a pregnant livebearer is excellent. The standard one is my favorite. Thanks again for sharing your experiences. 😊
You can have a lot of plants like pothos above the water line as well
Excited to learn from your upcoming gold fish tank. :)
They have such personalities
Good luck
Even pond fish come up to eat the pellets from your had. All of them have great personalitys. Must admit I do love a Blackmoor but from the 90s, Comets are creaping into top spot now.
I love your channel so much man!!!!!!! Keep at it. You're inspiring me to get back into it.
Green water is full of micro fauna that are great food for teeny tiny baby fish. Infusoria are necessary for neon tetra fry.
Weei goldfish again 🥳
You got me started with goldfish again in a planted aquarium, its so beautiful and the fish loves it 🤩
350L aquarium just for them ans a lot of plants and shimp 😁
Thanks mate
I feed my goldfish everything you said above and also frozen brine shrimp!! I love the cobalt brand goldfish pellets, a great high quality food!!
I had a very string gold fish, had him for 8 years and he grew pretty big! Loved him a lot :)
Dude, you just made me set up that low tech anubias, bucephalandra, java fern scape last week. Now I'm waiting to be inspired again by this goldfish project :) sorry for my broken english hehe
Excited for the goldfish build!
Loved the Ranchu crew!
Same happened to me…..had 3 bepeatiful ranchu’s I bought as babies. They got huge over 4 years and then one buy one got swim bladder issues. I tried feeding peas and greens but they would never eat them. It’s amazing how friendly goldfish actually are…..
I have 6 fancy goldfish in a 75 gallon, I absolutely enjoy watching over them.
Cheers Pete
I remember the Ranchu Crew! I also remember when you were getting "soil" from behind your house! 🤣
This is good because no one tries planted goldfish tanks really.
@MD Fhish Tanks could you do a cubic tank so it could be viewed from all sides? That would be really interesting to see.
Good luck with the goldies hope you get better results this time
I have 4 fantail goldfish in a planted tank, they are messy and the amount of poop doesn’t get used up by the plants so I’m battling a bit of green water, too much nutrients.
They’re beautiful little creatures, hope you enjoy them 😁
How long did they live??
@@elly7199 one of them 20 months, other 5 years, and the last 6 years. First half year in a 40 litre, after that 150 litre.
I remember the “oranchu crew”. You did your best at the time.
For your rocky hill tank perhaps there is too much light for the amount of plants?
Just sold my 500 litre Geophagus tank for a 200 litre juwel setup with 3 fantails instead. More to do with coming electricty bills and potential powercuts.
I have a 240 little Juwel with three fancy goldfish. Loving it and they seem very happy.
The gaudy fish looks in my opinion absolutely fantastic!!
