I agree with a comment I saw that said, "It's fan art. It's not that serious." I am reading there were other frustrations and things that were not okay, but her problem with the edit was a surprise. I do suggest watching the SNL skits with Ariana including her opening monologue! I've been watching them and enjoying the journey, haha.
Cynthia has every right to speak about her view of things. Since it was revealed to the public she would be portraying Elphaba, she's received a wide range of unjustifiable critisicm and it's very likely that has stirred up frustration inside of her. The original intention of the artist was probably not to insult or obscure her identity, and they should not feel discouraged for Cynthia's feedback, but by commenting on her reaction to this kind of fan art she can communicate her view of how everyone has been treating her online recently. This artwork is merely a gateway for something she could have exposed using any other example of how she's been forced to feel by the outrageous things people are saying of her. I just hope the artist realises this and that the result of this reel is that Cynthia can finally feel at peace.
For me, this felt like it came out of nowhere, but knowing that some people were upset about her casting in Wicked makes it clear why this might have been the final straw. I was so excited when she was announced for the role, so seeing her reaction to that fan-edited poster honestly made me sad as a fan.
Honestly, her reaction was exaggerated but I think it was the case of the straw breaking the camels back. There’s a lot of love for Cynthia as Elpheba, but as humans we focus on the negative and there’s also been a lot of that since her casting. A lot of racism towards her, a lot of graphic questions (the blanked word is actually about genitalia), and just a negativity towards her playing the role from a certain community that may have had an impact on her reaction. Especially when the edited poster was just a fan poster that didn’t make as much traction as the official poster until it was shared by her… and like you said, you can still tell it’s her, it’s just edited to be closer to the original illustration: very different to the example you show of the deep fake of Halle Bailey as Ariel. That being said, if *this* is the wildest, most offensive thing she’s seen, I love that for her because there’s so much worse going on in the world that she must be completely oblivious to. It’s just funny when the two things she compares it to are clearly worse than the edit…
Great point! It’s starting to feel like we’re all living in the Wicked universe, with people convinced that Cynthia’s actually a wicked witch. And honestly, how naive am I for thinking the bleeped-out word was ‘skin’? I’d be upset too, even if it’s meant as a joke.
I get her reaction to the AI video and the crass question like are you’re privates green. Those are personal attacks or attempts to degrade her friendship with her costar. However her reaction to the poster was definitely weird and overkill. I think this is one of the problems with social media. It causes people to make everything personal and make mountains out of mole hills. It was just fan art and no one should be attacked for that. It’s not like the artist was trying to have that replace the movie version of the poster. It’s truly not that deep.
I think her reaction was just built up anger. She's had a lot of people criticising her DG riff, the fact she's black, her looks etc. I think the ai and the p****y comment were the real tipping point but also I feel that they might feel.. they didn't have to recreate the poster or pay homage at all to the original and they clearly put time in and did this for the fans. I think she's just a bit frustrated that they put the time in to do that and even that is being edited and moaned about. I think she's more saying 'look, this is me, I'm elphaba, deal with it'. I just think her wording was a little clumsy.
Yeah, no, the blanked out thing wasn't skin. It was p***y. People used to write that next to the illustrated poster, as if Glinda was whispering that in her ear, but it's so much more gross to ask that to an actual human being playing the part of Elphaba. . As for this controversy: I feel the edited poster was fine. Just some fan art. Her whole point about "I chose to look down the camera and that was important to me" isn't something the person who made the edit would know. They just wanted to accurately recreate the iconic Broadway poster with the actors. They definitely didn't mean any harm. But I also feel she totally has the right to speak out about this, if its something she's uncomfortable with. It's just the first time I've ever seen an actor say no to far art. I really wonder what her stance is in regards to people making drawings of her version of the character.
I can't deal with anything and everything being considered "racist" these days. STOP playing the race card every 5 minutes. We went through all this with (black) Little Mermaid and now this. Maybe Hollywood should finally throw out the DEI casting and stop race swapping characters so we don't keep going through this. 🙄
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, but I actually liked Halle as Ariel. Casting can be so nuanced and there’s a lot of gray area to me. When it comes to Disney live-action, I’m looking for something fresh and not just a copy-and-paste. Take The Lion King, for example-I’d rather see more original takes like Maleficent or Cruella, where we dive deeper into stories we think we already know so well.
I find Cynthia's reaction (to the poster alone) very out of place. The edit is just an homage to the original poster. Not to mention the fact that Ariana is also obscured, not just Cynthia (she's in profile, we can only see one eye which is barely open/obscured by lashes, and her hand is positioned to cover even more of her face). The edit does not take away her star power, if anything it enhances/reconfirms Cynthia as the new Elfaba given that she is now taking on an iconic role as referenced by this poster design. I do not, however, condone the alleged comments (I have not seen this video but have heard discussion about it) about her private area. That's just very tasteless and disrespectful in my opinion, so I definitely see her frustration and anger with that.

I saw the opening and loved it. Made me think of “I don’t want to show off no more.”

100% agree with your sentiments
THIS! I was so confused by her reaction

Not my naive butt thinking the bleep out was “skin.”
no honey.... it isnt her skin :-)
Lol
I know now. I was truly lost and so grateful for the comments.

Am with Cynthia that ai poster looked disgusting and honestly offensive to actual fan made stuff and posters
Do you believe that was the intention? That the creator was a villian not fan?
