I saw Ginger Snaps before I ever got around to watching Jennifer’s Body. I love both movies, but I honestly never really connected them until seeing this. I now can see how Jennifer’s Body was influenced by Ginger Snaps, but completely agree that they both hold their own. This was so fun to watch!

I've personally seen Jennifer's Body as a allegorical to SA, through the ritual sacrifice Jennifer becomes a succubus. Jennifer's transformation and monstrous nature makes sense to me as hypersexuality and destructive behaviour maladaptive reactions/coping mechanisms to the trauma of SA.
The perspective of her reacting to and weaponizing her own objectification is one I hadn't taken into account and makes a lot of sense.

When I watched Ginger Snaps about a year ago, I was fascinated about how obviously feminist it was, but also how serious, dark, gritty, smart, and sad. It was a refreshingly gloomy watch, if that makes sense. I consider myself a fan, of both your channel and this movie (I enjoyed it much more than Jennifers Body), so I was very glad to see you had a video on it. Keep up the good work (if you feel like it), I love your video essays! :)

I was one of the OG fan of Jennifer’s Body when it came out in 09’. And believe me when I say that most of the YT comments back in 09’ also clocked that Ginger Snaps was kinda the OG version of JB too. Imo, they’re similar in genre but still different in their own ways. Love both.
Another movie called ‘Pretty Persuasion’ which is a hugely underrated and overlooked dark comedy with Evan Rachel Wood as the lead was also thrown into the ‘what-could-inspire-the humour in JB-conversation’ too. Ya’ll should check that one out.
With that said, I hate how Emily Perkins’ career didnt get big after Ginger Snaps.

Love this! Ginger Snaps is my favorite movie and I saw the similarities as soon as Jennifer's Body came out. Even with how some scenes are shot and everything. Such a shame people don't know about Ginger Snaps as much as Jennifer's Body or just dismiss it as a low budget version, it's so much better in my opinion. Still both amazing films though.

I was lucky enough to be introduced to “Ginger Snaps” and “Jennifer’s Body” as a teen in the 2000s. I loved them both. I could relate to the feeling of horror and dread when I got my first period. I hated puberty and the unwanted attention from men. Puberty felt like a monster, a nightmare that i couldn’t wake up from. I didn’t want to grow up. I desperately clung to the last vestiges of my girlhood.
You hit the nail on the head- Ginger Snaps and Jennifer’s Body tell two different stories. Ginger Snaps perfectly captures the feelings girls have during puberty. It does feel like you’re turning into something you don’t completely understand. The feelings of fear, loneliness, anger and a sense of dread. Jennifer’s Body perfectly conveys the inherent rage that accompanies womanhood. (I also love that the title of the latter references the Hole song.) I never felt like Jennifer as a teen, but I relate to her so much more as a grown woman too. As always your analysis is perfect and insightful.

2:16 it’s a whole franchise btw I saw part of like the 3rd film and it’s forever stuck with me. A girl feeding her monstrous sister who lives in the basement, medieval girls running from a village in the snow as one turns monstrous, a sort of love and bond between them as it’s clear they’ll always be together, be there for each other, as one is exiled the other willingly follows suit to leave the nightmare of their village. Because of this I wish to see the entirety of all of them.

I like grungy dark feminie movies i like their vibe and how they honestly dive into girls psyches and what is like to be a girl they are raw and real unlike girly movies which were destroying my confidence like what is important to be pretty to make a man like me and thats what all girls care about and thats their only problem ! i know people are defending girly movies but they were damaging to my self esteem and honestly they were also shallow unlike the dark feminine movies

Ginger Snaps has always been one of my favorite movies, and I appreciate that you made a video for it. I just want to say, though, that Trina Sinclair was definitely not the "school bully." She was just kind of minding her business, being her own person, and the Fitzgeralds were actually bullies toward her for not being outcasts like them. They played that "Search and Destroy" game, tried to kidnap her dog, and eventually were the cause of her death. If you realistically think about Trina's situation, it's an absolute tragedy. I love the Fitzgerald sisters, but they were lowkey horrible people that thought they were better than everyone. Trina wasn't even that bad, and she only was ever mean in reaction to them.

that’s definitely not true, trina got physical with brigitte twice and called the fitzgerald sisters name’s multiple times in the movie, we don’t have to rewrite history now 😭 she was a bitch but that didn’t mean she deserved her ending

    • @bluedreamer6564
      @bluedreamer6564 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@hayleywilliams4eva766 Not rewriting history, or saying that Trina couldn't be a bitch. Just saying that the Fitzgerald's kinda made themselves out to be victims of society when they were the ones mocking it more than it did them, and they were arguably worse to Trina than the other way around. That last part is debatable, but it's all a matter of perspective based on objectives within the narrative; not a rewriting of it.

Wow your analysis of Jennifer's body was so real that it brought me to tears. I am 26 now and nowhere near as beautiful as Megan. But I've found that I'm almost always being reduced to just my body, despite having all of the traits that they would want in a girlfriend. But it's like their lust for me screams so loud that they completely ignore the fact that Im a person with feelings. I guess it's the madonna-whore complex but it hurts.

i feel like ginger snaps and jennifer’s body have different meanings, different symbolism and different story lines in the end. but i feel like literally everything else was copy and pasted onto jennifer’s body. the shots, the turning a beautiful girl into a deadly monster, ect. i feel like ginger snap’s had better dialogue and lines, and a slightly more deeper meaning. and i feel like jennifer’s body was much better with the aesthetics and double meaning of girlhood/monsteress. both movies shine in their own way but i’ll always love ginger snap’s. i didn’t even know jennifer’s body existed by the time i was obsessed with ginger. so by the time i watched it i really believed they just copy and pasted ginger onto jennifer, but your video kind of helped me see the difference in meanings and storylines. i’m so happy somebody talked about this!!

I think it’s honestly kind of sexist for folks to say Jennifer’s Body ripped off Ginger Snaps (even if they don’t mean it like that) because it’s so dismissive and reductive!! obviously not enough feminine stories in that era of horror.
Love Ginger Snaps - I’m a big fan of the werewolf motif and I think it’s just perfect for this kind of allegory, and so underutilized in that respect!

I remember seeing screenshots of Ginger Snaps circulating on the internet around the time I was in middle school and high school 2005-2010ish. I thought Ginger and Brigitte looked so cool. This was before basically every movie was available to stream online, so I couldn’t find it anywhere. 🥲 I randomly stumbled across it again not too long ago, and finally watched it. Ginger Snaps felt oddly nostalgic since I was finally watching a movie I’d searched for for years, and I loved it! Not going to lie though, the multiple gruesome dog deaths would have sent me into hysterics as a teenager. It still made me incredibly sad, but I definitely handled it better as an adult so maybe the long delay was for the best. 😭😂 Overall, watching Ginger Snaps reconnected me with my inner teen. I miss her. I’ve noticed how often I try to heal my inner child, but Ginger Snaps reminded me to take care of my inner teen as well. 💔

I remember seeing Ginger Snaps in high school, several years before Jennifer's Body was produced and released, and probably 4 years before Diablo Cody's breakout sucess with Juno. It has such a special place in my heart, for many reasons. Until i saw that movie, i felt as if the majority of horror was made for men. I loved horror (still do), but the misogyny in slasher tropes especially really left a bad taste in my mouth. Ginger Snaps totally changed that for me. It was the first time since discovering Carrie that i felt truly seen and understood by a horror film.
Shortly after, Teeth and Hard Candy were released, and i was astounded by the mixed reception of my friends. My girl friends loved them, and my guy friends hated them. I still disticntly remember hanging out with a group of friends in someone's garage while one of the guys complained about those films, and my response was, "so what you're saying is that it was not enjoyable to watch a man get victimized for entertainment? Interesting... i guess now you know how it feels for girls when we watch your favorite horror films."
