And Druig/Makkari with just a few interactions now and then had more chemistry than Sersi/Ikaris, which is crazy considering their relationship was one of the main focus of the movie.
Yeah, but Ikaris also betrayed Sersi. That would not have made as much sense if they had the same kind of chemistry. Druig was as patient with and committed to humanity as he was to Makkari. Ikaris left to protect himself and the Celestial mission. I honestly didn't know for sure if he would choose her or humanity at the last moment and neither did he. It was only when he was pressed to the limit that he had to admit how hollow his beliefs were and flew away because there was nothing left for him. He walked away from her 500 years ago and she really did move on.
I felt bad for Thena and Gilgamesh situation more than feeling bad for Sersei being betrayed by Ikaris not gonna lie. I can't figure out where in the execution the problem was though
@@blehh010 they(edit; Gilgamesh and Thena) were a more compelling love/care story. I'm not sure it was even romantic though. Or if it would have been very ethical of him even given her condition. Either way his commitment to her was manifest in 500 years of stewardship. Curious to hear what you mean by 'felt bad'. Like for them? Or about the situation? In regards to the betrayal? I mean Gilgamesh did die over it.
I said this in a different video, so if you've seen my comment there apologies, but: People keep comparing these two relationships but they were intentionally different. Ikaris/Sersi have this transcendent love, but it's... kinda broken. Because Ikaris has kept himself closed off from Sersi for so long, knowing the truth of their situation. He is a soldier, always has been; he keeps his feelings close to him. Everything's not all right between them, they are (excuse the pun) eternally at odds. In every life, on every planet, they will be - that's why Ikaris well, does what he does. There's a sense of emptiness and tragedy there. Druig/Makkari are different. They have this youthful energy, they don't have this crisis between them. Druig as a character is supposed to come as a surprise, you see he has a big heart under there, despite appearances. You root for them because the characters aren't having this wedge between them (Though it helps the actors do have insane chemistry). A lot of the differences in the pairings and the reception thereof comes down to the fact Ikaris and Druig are foils to each other, and their character arcs subvert expectations. Idk just my opinion lol I just feel the two pairings served very different purposes and were executed well along with that vision, which makes audience reception unsurprising.
@@caitlinb35 100%. I feel like people are projecting these love story/'family' tropes onto the story were it doesn't belong and not getting that they are SUPPOSED TO think the relationships are strained. If people thought none of the relationships work that would have been a problem, but it seems to me that the relationships that worked were supposed to and the ones that felt broken were supposed to and everyone's comments fall in line with the expected pattern, whether they realize it or not.
when ikaris was thinking about how he loved sersi so he couldn't kill her, the fact that he was only thinking about the only scenes they showed before and not one moment from the supposed 5000 they spent together is hilarious
I wish they hadn’t shown ANY scenes. Like, I just watched this movie, you can just use your amazing actor to convey his internal conflict, don’t spoon feed me.
@@lilicorrea8515 FOR REAL. Richard Madden was eating that scene up with just his face and all of a sudden that lame montage came in and ruined the whole feeling
Their chemistry felt so forced tho, I didn't feel emotionally investing about their relationship cuz there's barely any development for their chemistry
The absolute best part of the movie was Druig saying "My beautiful, beautiful Makkari. Did you miss me?" They had a few scenes together yet they had way more chemistry than the main couple...
IKR!? 😅 I mean like seriously tho…they were able to convey their chemistry with like what? 15 seconds ffs! Druig is my favorite character even tho he only gets like 10-15 ish mins screen time, idk maybe less than that actually, he also has few lines but everything he says is quite wise/clever and pretty damn funny too! I mean like holy shit was it hilarious when he legitimately K.O sprite with a freaking rock to head ffs😅 best part of the movie imo😉👍tho reading that sentence back it makes me look like im quite sadistic oss😂but Sorry (not sorry) my dudes that shit was hilarious imo!🤷♀️
I'm honestly surprised that Disney even thought it'd be a good idea to introduce 10 characters and their individual storylines in ONE 2 hour film especially considering how hard they've been pushing Disney+ Marvel tv shows. Like they have the perfect platform and a lot of hype about the tv shows but still went forward with this.
This storyline could've been a Disney+ show for sure, maybe even better actors & actresses, although more affordable, could've taken these roles so we could get better acquainted with the characters and felt the importance of the choices made 🤷🏼♀️
Could you imagine if Eternals was a show, and we got a Time’s-Arrow-style episode that takes place entirely inside Thena’s shattered mind, at the end of which she finally achieves clarity and the true nature of the Celestials is revealed? That would have been incredible.
I totally agree with everything you said! Talking on how they act more like coworkers, I found it so frustrating when in-fighting occurred they didn't act smartly against others' abilities. If you're going to bind big-laser eye guy to the ground, be aware they have laser eyes. They act like they've only been working together for a week rather than an era
Considering it took me 27 years to be closer to my family aka my entire life, I can see where the infighting may come from. After years apart and exploring new facets, different beliefs, experiences, values, and ideas form. You still love your family, but the lost time and added distance make it harder to get along again.
I have a hard time seeing the Eternals as belonging to the MCU, like if I saw them in a scene with another marvel character they would feel very out of place.
it's proof that just because something CAN be made into a movie doesn't mean it SHOULD-especially when it's so seemingly random. I appreciate the MCU for branching out from The Avengers though. I think it should have just stayed a comic
I hate this mindset. We SHOULD be seeing different tones clash against each other. A character like The Punisher is going to feel weird next to The Fantastic Four. Half of MCU's problem is that they feel the need to have every character fit perfectly near each other. That's not necessary.
I have 'feelings' about this reveal. And about the glasses (can I HAVE THEM?!). But there are feelings. Which does not in any way take away from how great this channel is, or change the core of it, but it does add a giddy elementt.
At the start, when Kit Harrington was asking Sersi if she was a wizard, when he said "Sprite keeps calling you a wizard" at that point I didn't know Sprite was a character, and thought that there were glasses of Sprite whispering "Sersi's a wizard" to him in restaurants 😂
While the whole cast is good, when the time for each character is so small you can really feel which actors are the real “movie stars”. Every time angelina is on screen I cant stop looking at her.
This entire movie was held together by how hard each of the actors were trying to make it work. Props to them for giving it their all from a script with as many holes as swiss cheese
11:16 EXCUSE ME. Druig had one of the most emotional stories of the eternals because he literally had the power to stop conflict and he wasn't allowed to because it would mess with humans free will, the amount of humanity and free will he has not to use his power across the entire planet is emphized through the actors performance, then by the end of the movie he the eternal to control the unimind pitches in to save the planet; opinions are opinions but you did ask, so...Druig had a story.
That's not the point the each had good stories but the did not have the time the develope them, druig did have one of the best build up but we expected more from that story, I mean where did it lead him, did he finally think mind control should stop human wars or that it better just to take a few humans and make them live in peace?????! Does he want peace or freedom more for the humans one sec he appears to be a dictator the other I don't know the whole movie is confusing.
But the entire point of his power is that it’s useless because he’s not supposed to use it. So the only reason he has that power is for a plot device. In the eternal’s viewpoint of Druig, why did he have that power to control human minds if he’s not supposed to even use it??? It completely contradicts why he was designed to have that power.
i think his potential was wasted and instead he was mostly used for witty jokes and asides (like the whole makkari interactions are fun, but they show only one facet of him in short scenes, not the whole picture). We never explore the moral complexities of his power (because controlling people's actions through their minds implies removing their free will, even if it's used for "the greater good"), his reasoning (does he feel righteous, resigned, limited in any away?), his actual grievances with the other eternals, etc. We saw him leave the rest while mind controlling basically two armies, and later still controlling an entire village (with/without their consent? we dont know) but there's still a lot missing there: he could have gone around the world "righting wrongs" for all we know. I'd have love to see more of him explored just as well as all the others... but here we are lol
I took this one just as a set up, intro to new people, kind of movie. It wasn't great, and I agree it was too ambitious, but I do look forward to seeing these characters again, now that we know more or less who they are and what's going on. As you said, it was too much for such a short amount of time, and yes, too many characters. That's why I think future installments will be better (guess I'm an optimist).
@@normadgarmez7026 yeah, that "political agenda" is pandering to the capitalistic neoliberal shills while actually spreading military propaganda in exchange for the millions the pentagon pays them to fund their media.
@@normadgarmez7026 there was no political agenda in eternals. It was definitely present in falcon and the winter soilder, but the eternals simply had a diverse cast with a gay character
I think druig was the best character. The movie kinda emphasizes that he’s mysterious so him not being all that developed was less jarring. Even still they gave us little hints of who he is, a confrontational, flirty, loner, who’s kinda hypocritical. And his relationship with makkari makes sense cause she kind of a loner too. Honestly, Those two have more chemistry than sersi and ikaris. I don’t think I could possibly describe any of the other-more prominent-characters so well. This is all I got: Thena - “crazy” Ajak - leader Sersi - loves humans Ikaris - rule follower? Gilgamesh - strong? Kingo - jokester/actor (wow look 2) Sprite - adult child Phastos - engineering/father. makkari - deaf/loner
I wouldn’t really give them credit for Druig because at the end of the day he is basically the Eternals’s version of Loki. When you look at it through that lens you can see that MCU Druig is a mix of Comic Loki with a Little of Comic Druig’s personality
I love Makkari, just because one of my FAVOURITE scenes in the movie is just after Ikaris reveals himself to be evil and everyone's shocked and scared, and suddenly Makkari bursts in, completely failing to read the room, like 'Hey guys good news! I found the Celestial!"
To be honest, while I thought that the movie had quite a lot of problems (Sersei and Ikaris’s inexplicable romance, the lack of Kro’s use in the movie, the odd pacing and a bit too much exposition), I still enjoyed and appreciated what the movie was trying to do and am excited to see where they go with the Eternals in the future. Like everyone else has mentioned, Gilgamesh and Thena, Druig and Makkari have more chemistry than the main two leads.
I absolutely agree with you. I love the idea of the Eternals. Though the execution could've been a lot better, it feels like something a bit different and refreshing compared to other marvel movies. I'd really like to get to know the characters better, because I feel I could get attached to them. Their stories, motivations, personalities... are different enough and I hope they get to be fleshed out. For one, I'd love to explore the consequences of Thena's memories not being erased, and, on top of that, living with the trauma of Gilgamesh's death (both for her and for the group as a whole). And of course, I can't wait to see more of Makkari and Druig. It's incredble that they had so much chemistry in like... 2 or 3 scenes??? I would've liked that Kro hadn't appeared in the final battle and had been left as a potential villain for another film, but, honestly, it wouldn't be surprising if he had survived as he took Ajak's healing powers and resurrecting characters is something Marvel seems to enjoy.
Coming to the movie, I feel like it fell flat because the characters were still very new to us but we were forced to care about them. Like Avengers was quite a basic superhero movie, it did not have some super awesome never seen before plot or something, but we loved it because we were attached to the characters. Hell, I was so attached to Tony that MCU ended for me after Endgame. And I did not watch anything after that but after being forced to watch No Way Home, I was so compelled that I binge-watched WandaVision, Loki, Black Widow, Falcon, and the Winter Soldier and Eternals all in 3 days. All because Spiderman is a well-fleshed-out character, and even if he was put through stuff I don't agree with, it brought me back to things I loved about Marvel. But Eternals made me feel so underwhelmed like something was wrong and I kept telling myself that it was my own high expectations that are making me feel this way. But after seeing your analysis, I feel like it does make more sense in being underwhelmed. This was very much Disney's brand of larger-than-life fairytale family is important bullshit than the kind of stuff Marvel usually puts out. They could've made Sersi the best kind of female protagonist who is feminine and delicate while being badass and powerful and frankly, I absolutely hate that lost potential. Really hope they redeem it somehow, tho it is very difficult to see how they would do it.
I'm sorry for only finding this comment & video like a year & a half later, but I really just have to say that I agree with you. I watched Eternals in theaters & the whole time I sat there like "Is it me? Am I just too old for Marvel anymore, or is it that Endgame was just a great freaking finale and I can't move on?" And it was definitely the latter. Surprisingly, I watched No Way Home in theaters a couple of months afterwards, and I was like "NOPE! The spark's still there; I just can't move on."
Was I the only one who was instantly suspicious of Ikarus when he arrived in London? And his reason for coming to check on Seresi was because he was “worried about her after the earthquake and was checking on her”. Even if it was a worldwide earthquake like movie said, none of the other Eternals were checking back with everyone. He was just super suspicious to me from the get go.
Yeah, I always told myself while watching "I can't like this guy, and idk why". His character felt so cardboard-ish too. His whole personality was just "Man" lol. Sersi's guilty of this as well.
The strangest part of the movie to me is that even though its so long and there's so much exposition, a lot of it is pointless. Like they say the same thing over and over again, we have a scene of eternals discovering their true purpose and being mildly annoyed about it like 5 times. Even that opening title crawl is useless because all the information that is told to us in that title crawl, is told again in the scene directly after it. I feel if it took a lot of this repition and spent that developing the characters in different ways, it would've been a lot better. Side note I think another thing that would greatly improve the movie is if it was in chronological order, switching back and forth between past and present doesn't serve any purpose whatsoever besides giving us the Icarus killed the leader twist near the end. But I feel like if we knew Icarus was evil the whole time, that would build up the suspense in the scenes that he's in, it would've also made the leader's death more impactful because we don't really get scenes of her until after she's dead.
I was absolutely convinced that this movie was going to be a tv series, and, after watching it, I'm even more convinced that it absolutely should've been
I wish Eternals was a tv show with one story that could have ended with this battle with the deviants and teased the Celestial storyline rather than focusing on it in this movie. I think it could have been better if each episode focused on a different character, that way they could incorporate these flashbacks, but also make each of them feel like actual active characters, because coming out of the movie, I didn’t care about any characters, but an episode per character i feel could actually help them all make more sense as individual characters, rather than one part of a whole.
Star Wars started with Episode 4. Sometimes you need to throw people into the epic middle of a story to get them hooked. A show or prequel could stil come later.
@@fusiondog77 It didn’t really feel like you were thrown into the action to me, though. It was going back and forth with flashbacks and different countries just to find the other Eternals and Arishem that to me really slowed the story down. It has too many plot threads that are underdeveloped or just abandoned that there never really feels like there is that great action.
I feel like Shazam is the perfect example of a movie with a big cast that works up to the feeling of “family” between everyone. even when they’re not fully there, you can just see the chemistry edit: I meant only that Shazam is a movie that wants to be about family in a lot of ways too, and that imo it accomplishes the *feel* of family by the end. the characters are realistic and the actors have chemistry. okay, bye
Except they're not a family. They are robot coworkers who barely liked each other in the first place and broke up the minute their job was done. The idea that anything hinged on them being a "family" seems like a strawman projection. I think the story only works because we can believe the fractured distance between Ikaris and the rest. We would never believe ihis betrayal otherwise. All the rest of them had chemistry between their factions as expected.
I still enjoyed Shazam but my two problems with the movie were the main villain, and Billy didn’t interact with his foster siblings as much other than Freddy, but I hope that changes in the sequel where they all interact with each other to develop chemistry. But hey at least Shazam is the better Captain Marvel than Marvel’s Captain Marvel.
I actually loved this movie but I completely agree with everything you said except the part about the characters. For an ensemble cast, I feel like they still managed to flesh them out with what they could. There are things about characters that are simple but give you an image of what they are. Gilgamesh is one of the strongest warriors in history but he likes to cook and he's a big softie which is what led him to dedicate a life to Thena. Sersi is passive, yes, but I feel like it made sense for her character, even the other Eternals looked down on her and questioned why she was chosen instead of Ikaris. There were a lot of scenes where you could see her be insecure with herself and I think that was pretty interesting to have her arc end with her feeling secure enough to not try to fight Ikaris because she knew he couldn't hurt her. There were a lot of good ideas thrown into this mess of a movie and honestly, I prefer that over a movie that did everything right only because it didn't try to be something more. TL;DR I still feel like I know more about all of the Eternals than I do about Zendaya's character in Spiderman
I have to agree, your take can also be applied to Druig. He is made explicitly clear to be powerful enough to stop human war with his powers and was even going to be used to stop the celestial. But he couldn’t because it would rob humans of free will. It causes a lot of internal conflict for him - enough that he’s the first to speak out against Ajak and question their purpose. I absolutely loved that. For a character that showed minimal facial expressions and wasn’t even the main focus he was still so emotional, yet distant, and cheeky, yet serious enough to stand for what he believes in. The fact that I got all that from him says a lot. I just wished there was more to flesh him out. I also wish I knew more about Makarri because her powers are so badass I really like her!!
Just imagine how good this Disney+ series would've been if we'd had Thena remember the truth about the Celestials and we would've actually got that family feel. Theoretically, I liked this movie a lot and I allowed myself to be entertained by it, but, at the same time, I agree with all criticism and I can find 100 ideas to make it better.
I feel like the MCU has lost track of what made it incredible in the beginning, which is making character-led movies that really focus on the complexities of a character behind their superhero persona, backed up with absolutely PHENOMENAL casting for the character they want to explore. We didn't care about the Avengers because they were powerful and cool, we cared about them because they felt like real people (whether you loved or hated them). The plot was often generic, even quite weak, but if they could do justice to the character(s) they could still be great movies. Guardians of the Galaxy managed to achieve this for a freaking sentient raccoon and tree. I feel like The Eternals went for plot and theme over characters, but because of the number of characters the theme element was weak. I have hope for improvements though because with a few exceptions, I think the characters are incredibly interesting...though unfortunately I think Ikarus was miscast.
I feel the exact opposite. The Avengers movies always felt empty and shallow in terms of the characters and their interactions and relationships but the plot was entertaining. They never felt human to me. It always felt like the plot and action were more important and the character development was an afterthought. I feel that they never took enough time to focus on a characters motivation and feelings and thoughts but rather; go back on time, get and infinity stone, character moment that was pretty basic, go to the present, get tricked and fight. Even in the beginning of Endgame Tonys relationship with his family never felt real but like actors were pretending to be a family. They never explored deep ideas and topics when together. It was always just ,” I love you. *Crying* I hate you. *Hugging* He’s dead!! *Crying* Not like how a real family would interact with bickering and jokes and annoying one another and. It was always just love most of the time and a bear perfect family that got on along perfectly. It was kind of annoying actually. The Eternals felt like it’s plot in the begging was interesting with deviants but then became a bit bloated with the emergence and the minor subplots but then pulled itself together (mainly by focusing on the emergence). The characters however were MARVELous. The seemed like sibling with Ajack and Phastos being the parents and Makkari the cool track star Aunt. Their relationships had flaws with jealousy and love triangles and annoyance. They were so unsure how they felt at times and everyone had a very complex relationship with everyone else and those relationships changed. Take Sprite and Ikaris. It felt like they were just normal friends and that Sprite looked up to Ikaris but as time went on their relationship become a brother sister relationship then a one sided romance. It developed and changed ,rather negatively I might add, but that what was so beautiful. Nothing in life is as perfect and prim as it felt with the Avengers. Even if characters never liked one another it just stayed like that no resolution (apart from fighting) no talking no deep conversations…nothing. Or those scenes were few and far between which I won’t fault them for. When the Avengers defeated Thanos I was happy but for the world being saved and seeing Thanos lose. When (Spoiler) Thena killed King Kro I was happy not only because the world is safe from deviants but because Thena’s arch ended and she managed to avenge Gilgamesh. I just feel like these phases in Marvels films are made for different people.
@@artistaroundtheblock2047 Avengers 1 had great character development and is my fav MCU movie to date but I agree with you about the other Avengers movies. I don’t like them as a whole but that first one is special
Overall, I think it was ok, meh. I wanted more, left blue-balled. I wish, that: 1. We had more Angelina Jolie - I feel that she was on screen for maybe 10 minutes, but with so little portrayal of her character she just punches it through her performance 2. We had one clear villain. Why not have the movie be just about deviants? Let Kor(?) be the one to, I don't know, capture Thena and reveal to her the true purpose of Eternals. 3. Split this into separate movies. One - a clear introduction, we spend a bit more time with the characters, maybe we don't meet the whole squad in the first movie. Develop the characters as people who we as audience can know and care about. Second movie - the eternal civil war, let it be about the internal conflict, now we have the plot to stop the birth of the celestial and how it divides the group. We know them more, so now we can actually care what happens. And next movies can be about fighting celestials, or finding more eternals, or coming back to see who John Snow really is. 4. Thena and Gilgamesh had a better quasi romantic subplot, than Sersi and Ikarus. Don't force romance when there's no chemistry. 5. Again, Angelina really knew what to do to stand out. 6. The saddest thing, the most entertaining and amusing moment, was the Harry Styles reveal.... Shame, really. It is not a completely bad movie, but given who worked on it in terms of the director or cast, these are really talented people; and there are moments were the movie gets good (only for a brief period). Plus the visuals are amazing (and kind of Dune-like - that's a good movie, with a small plot that establishes bigger future movies). When we see them again, I hope Marvel learns from mistakes, that they made here and delivers a movie that this story and characters deserve.
Nobody seems to get that Ikaris was NOT SUPPOSED to have good chemistry with ANYBODY. Sersi was WITH Dane. She was OVER Ikaris. Which is why when Ikaris lost his faith int the Celestials he was so empty and adrift he chose to fly into the sun. He didn't realize he loved her and then try to stay to win her, he just realized the Celestials weren't worth killing her over. He didn't have her, the Celestials or anything at all at the end. Maybe there is a lesson there, but either way it feels pretty intentional to me.
@@fusiondog77 but they introduced Dane before Ikaris, so the whole movie when they we watched their relationship unfold, we knew they were exes and atleast Sersei seemed over it. Didn't really feel the betrayal when they revealed he killed Ajak and heartbrokeness he couldn't use his eye beams on Sersei.
@@blehh010 I feel like there were just enough breadcrumbs in place, that when they revealed he was told the secret it made sense that he had killed Ajak. He had the strongest connection to her, maybe cause of her maternal role to the team. Either way it seemed to be reciprocated as she chose him to lead at first. So I definitely felt his betrayal of her more than anyone else. I think the actor portrayed some real anguish over that, but then with that done, the rest of the betrayal was proforma. He had passed his emotional hurdle and committed himself to the distraction plan. It was only when pressed to the limit that he realized that even if it was over, at one point what he felt for her was a real thing and all he knew of the Celestials was lies. His heartbrokenes, to me, was more about the death of his faith in the Celestials than anything else. He had killed the only person he allowed himself to remain close to, Ajak, for something he realized at the end had no real substance to him. The vaporous lies of Arashem vs the tangible truth of a former love experienced and remembered.

I left the theater feeling like Sersi isn't a strong enough character to carry any other movies that the Eternals show up in, she just doesn't have the personality to match with some of the other heros in the MCU right now and she has no clear motivations
Exactly. She seemed more like a vessel to the plot. I literally can’t tell you one interesting thing about her personality. She felt like she was just there to be the protagonist and save the day.
Yep. I still don't know why Ajak chose her. The only reason I remember being given is "She loved humans more than anyone else" but in that case, the winners are clearly either Druig for wanting to end world conflicts so badly to the point of depression, or Phastos for wanting to help them evolve so much. He actually cried when he saw the World Wars, despite being a synthetic creature. Heck, even Kingo's a contender for actually loving having fun with humans, making a living out of singing & dancing for centuries instead of hiding away, lol. Sersi has nothing going for her... I think they just wanted a female protagonist. If I had to choose, the protagonist would either be my boy Druig (1: Bc I've never seen an MCU main character with his dreary, almost emo personality & it'd be interesting. 2: The dilemma of free will would be brought to the forefront and 3: Makkari and him would have more screen time, making an interesting main couple for MCU standards) or Thena (bc it'd actually make sense for her to be chosen, assuming Ajak knows she's the only other Eternal who remembers everything. Then the film would become a mystery/thriller surrounding someone with mental illness who has a past life, which is also interesting by MCU standards). Sorry for the rant 😅
My main problem with Sersi is that she is supposed to be the new leader but there's not a single moment in the movie were they show us why she has to be the leader or why is she gaining this role, she never takes the leading role, never gives orders, never plans anything, doesn't have the qualities to be a leader. In fact she is mostly useless until the very end of the movie. For the majority of the movie Ajack is shown as the leader due to the extensive flashbacks and in the movie it self the characters just seen to follow Ikarus than any other person until the revelation. I'm ok with a character being the leader not for it's physical strength but for it's emotional union and companion, they show us this can work with Ajack who has not a single ofensive power and it's a healer but you can feel her as the leader for her motherly nature and the emotional impact she has in the others, but Sersi is never shown to be very influential in the group or motherly or the hearth, her only quality is that she likes humans (for a reason that is never shown). If anything they could have kept Sersi as the choosen one and make Druig the leader, Druig was the first one who expressed the feelings that would end up being the new motives of the Eternals and has more influence in the other characters than Sersi.
when you think about the most successful marvel movies of phase 4, the first one that came to my mind was no way home and honestly, as i think about it now, it feels like the opposite of eternals, with the characters that we already know and love trying to find a solution to a problem and wrap up the plot, while telling us even more about them through their actions and it's just incredibly engaging.
I personally Love this movie. I think the story is interesting, I think each individual story is great when they focus on it. And I guess that is my biggest issue with the movie its not as flused out as it could be. So some of the characters feel shallow. The first thing I said walking out of the film was "I like it, but it should have been a Disney+ show."
"Eternals, like Batman V. Superman, is a movie that tries to shove an entire season' worth of television into a two hour movie." Holy shit, Eternals is basically The Last Airbender.
The best you can say about the Eternals is that it’s visually stunning. The characters, pacing, and - primarily - the writing, were surprisingly un-marvel-like. It didn’t stand as an origin story untethered from the MCU continuity, and yet it’s function as a key - as yet unexplored - aspect of that continuity was also sketchy and lazily rendered. How could something like Thanos have escaped the interest of beings like the Eternals? They literally fell apart because of Hiroshima! There are a thousand better ways to frame just that one tiny thread. I feel like any coherence between the MCU thus far and Eternals evaporates under examination. That’s just lazy.
Except they specifically address Thanos and non interference. Phastos felt responsible for Hiroshima. He didn't have any part in what he would see as a space stranger. No reason to collapse under the weight of your own guilt if you know you aren't guilty. It's apples and oranges.
@@fusiondog77 I realize they addressed it. I just think the way they addressed it was a total botch. I mean great: they actually took an active, albeit secondary role in the development of the bomb, but Is it about the safety and well being of humans, or is it about the personal moral equilibrium of robots who know they’re robots? If they care about human beings enough to wail and hair-rend when their guidance causes genocide and mass murder, you’d think they’d care enough to show up when billions of them are set to die all at once.
@@legzdiamond2356 I can see the general care for humanity aspect, but also since Sersi had no idea how powerful she was at the time, the only one with enough power to make a difference, who could have made it to Wakanda in time (the Battle of Wakanda was only a couple hours with no warning and the enemy LITERALLY falling out of the sky), was Ikaris. And he was never as close to humanity and had spent 500 years resolving himself to accepting the extinction of humanity as an inevitably. It is doubtful he would come even if he heard about it, which he probably wouldn't have since the rest of of world doesn't have news outlets in Wakanda. He would even known that halving the population would actually STOP the extinction of humanity from the Celestial egg, since it wouldn't have enough energy to hatch. If he knew the goal of Thanos, and primarily cared about humanity, he would have actually HELPED Thanos. If he had been aware of the fight he might have tried to stop Thanos specifically because he DID NOT care about humanity more than the Celestial seeds at the time. Though in the end I think there is VERY little chance any of them could have had foreknowledge of the attack in time to make an intervention, so it is a moot point.
IKAROS was the best eternal!!! I realy enjoyed the powerful Ikaros and i am real sad that he killed himself!!! Ikaros saved the world!!! He could easily kill all the eternals and he could easily kill the woman he loves in the end of the movie! He could destroy earth but he change his mine at the end because he could not kill the woman he loves!!! What a great caracter!!! i love Ikaros and i will watch again and again that movie just because of Ikaros!!!
When Druig said ‘That makes them us’ talking to Sersi after Ajak’s death about how the deviants literally just try and survive I thought that’s how it’ll end. Damn, I was wrong.
Omg yeees. I thought that Ajak lied about the deviants being a different species and were actually eternals that went rogue and were punished to become deviants. Welp, i was wrong
@@bluepancake1269 Right? It would’ve been a better ending realising that they’re more of the same and would’ve had a good message as well, I think… Probably too much of a radical move for Disney, though. Or they could’ve just been like nah Arishem bye we won’t keep killing them cause they have as much right for existence as we do we’re just gonna try and keep them in line or something. Idk this had so much unexplored potential…and I think they wasted it
The whole movie felt like the 1st act of a movie, I was 3/4 in and I was still waiting for the movie to begin. Marvel is starting to rely too much on other installments to tell a complete story. I had the same issue with Captain Marvel, but I think as an audience we are a lot more solid and loyal then what they had 10 yrs ago.
I do feel the eternals are a family, a disfuncional found family one, they care for each other and have strong connection between them. On something about makkari, gilgamesh and druig i can say that makkari enjoys fun and is relaxed, druig is empathic and broody and gilgamesh compassionate. They just have like basic personalities because they didn't have time for all of them but they do have something that can grow into complete characters later on
If there was some equivalent of a Snyder Cut (a Zhao cut?), I think I would like this movie more. The thing that frustrates me the most is that I love the found family trope. They could have EASILY done it here - these characters have known each other for a millennia and even if they're broken apart, they still have years of history together and clearly want to work together despite the past. But the family aspect of it felt like how the original Suicide Squad handled it: They had a scene together and decide they're going to fight as a family, with some banter thrown in. But the problem is I only know like two details about every character at this point, so I, as the viewer, ask why should I care that they're banding together now? Like sure it's to stop the big bad, but it feels like they're doing this more because the plot demands and not because the characters themselves believe this is the right thing to do. And thank you for bringing up the pacing or lack thereof. I kept asking my roommate what time it was while we were watching and, after what I thought was an hour of the movie, it had only been 20 minutes. I really wish this had been a Disney+ show because I really feel like it would have thrived. I'm just frustrated that there was so much I should have liked in this movie that I didn't. So many people I knew loved this movie and I felt like I was crazy for not liking it. Like I must have missed Something, clearly... But it really just is The Last Jedi again where it's so polarizing that we'll be talking about it for ages. And maybe that's for the best.
You truly explained how I feel after watching the movie, I even tell my boyfriend the exact same thing that Eternals feels like it’s cramming to much information while also doesn’t really tell you anything meaningful. I don’t hate the movie, there are some parts that I find amusing, but it just fell short for me which is a shame. I just hope that the future MCU movies don’t get too convoluted for its own good.
Convoluted how? Personally it's my best mcu movie since Infinity War. Absolutely loved it. Really refreshing. Just thinking of the bore fest template that was Shang Chi is giving me a headache.
My main thing with the Eternals is that it definitely should have been a Disney+ show, I think that would have fixed a lot of it, if we didn't have to cram the universe spanning backstory and split, the collection of people in like 5 different locations, the existential stuff and the big plot twists and fights into 2 and a half hours. It maybe would have helped with Sersi and Ikaris so that they weren't massively overshadowed by the minor romantic subplots with better chemistry. It definitely would have helped with Sprite's thing and we could have gotten actual character development for the 9 of them that don't immediately die.
Though I am a person who's been following the MCU, I wasn't really keen on watching the Eternals. It was only by coincidence that I decided to watch the film. And coming into it, I wasn't expecting much, so maybe that’s why I didn't get the critics when they’ve said that the movie was “bad.” I actually quite enjoyed it, sure it didn't build much to the world we already knew and wasn’t nearly necessarily driven in a specific plot, but I got a kick out of it. I wouldn’t say it's the best MCU film but it was great generally, personally I’d have it in my top 10 or 5 possibly if they would’ve fleshed out the character more. Overall, I’m still invested in the Eternals story, I just hope the writers gets to smooth out the main plot of the story better the next time we see them.
Appreciate the Neil Gaiman (2006) comic recommendation. Quite thoroughly enjoyed it, especially Sprite’s machinations playing a hand with the storyline. I think they should’ve gotten inspiration and a roadmap from the comics and built on that foundation. 🦅
I liked this movie a lot, but it took me a second watch to figure out what exactly did I like about it even when the movie still feels kind of weird, and for me is the characters. For example my favorite, Makkari; Yes, she did not got a lot of screen time, but for what we got I can tell she's curious, hyper and kind, she like to collect things and gather knowledge, also she and Druig had were more chemistry in two minutes than Ikaris and Sersi. I also like the possibility of what is going to happen with Dane and I want to see Ajak again. However, all these things are not enterally connected with the movie we already have, this movie is a lot in a very short time and would have worked better as a series as your suggested. Still, I'm really looking forward to see more of these characters
IKAROS was the best eternal!!! I realy enjoyed the powerful Ikaros and i am real sad that he killed himself!!! Ikaros saved the world!!! I liked it. Wasn’t great, I didn’t like how they just forgave Sprite after a few tears when she literally stabbed Sersi and was okay with Ikaris killing Ajax. But I agree some of their deaths were not emotional because it felt like they were more like coworkers than family.
We were on a Disney cruise when Eternals premiered, so we watched it at 11pm for "free" on the ship. My husband is a morning person and fell asleep not long into it. He woke up the last 15-20 minutes. Afterwards, he said, "What did I miss?". I said, "You saw the beginning through the first flashbacks, them on their ship, and talking about Arishem?" He said yes. I said, did you see the final battle with the mutant deviant & the giant thing coming up through the earth?". He said, "Yes.". I spent 30 seconds filling him in on Ikaris' betrayal and the celestial's birthing plan, and said, "That's it. You spent your time better than I did.".
My husband said that Thena was actually in a relationship with Crow in the comics and that would've been way more interesting. Lol They criminally underutilized Thena anyway - she should've been the leader of the team. Sorry, Sersi.
It’s odd but I felt like even though Sersi, Ikaris and Thena were clearly supposed to be the most prevalent of them all I much more enjoyed the presence of Druig, Makkari and Phastos. They were no more fleshed out than anybody else but they were so much more enjoyable to watch. I know they were definitely more like comic relief but there was just something about Sersi, Ikaris and Thena that didn’t work for me and I can’t figure out what it was. Also it didn’t make sense to me why Ikaris was the villain, I know they explained it but to me it just seemed like they wanted as surprise antagonist and thought he was the best option?? I don’t know, maybe it’s just me
Eternals is my new The Last Jedi. I enjoyed it and liked alot of things about it and i dont understand the furious hatred for this movie. But i can se its flaws and understand why others dont like it. I do think critics where waayy to harsh on this movie. Btw: the fact that Makarri and Druig had more chemestry that sersi and ikarus just tells you how badly developed their relationship was.
The hatred for the last jedi is easy to understand: it ignores the characterization of Luke and Leia in the return of the jedi and has no consequences for the main characters at the end, making everything easy to solve.
@@enzojose4001 Space Ninja said “peaceful conversations” in the comments. As so any concersation about the last jedi cant be peaceful. Lets just agree to disagree.
@@fabiicaza1066 I offended you at some point? I just said why people don't like the last jedi. Peaceful conversation doens't mean "you can't talk about anything that you din't liked".
@@enzojose4001 hahaha no i am not offended at all. I just find that when it comes to the last jedi, people have very strong feelings about it and its hard to have conversations about it. I understand thats the reason people dont like the last jedi. They feel luke and leia dont feel like themselfs, and that fine. I personally like the direction they took with the caracters, its a more cynical aproach to the series but i enjoy it. For luke in particular, it feels like a natural progession for his caracter. To with age grow more cynical and to question the ways of the jedi. Besides the casino section of the movie, i think its a good movie and dont think in needs to be “erased from canon” like many fans say. (That should be The rise of skywalker but that a whole other thing). Like i mentioned, i understand the dislike and why people dont like it. But i feel that the INTENSE hatred is a bit much. Just like Eternals.
@@fabiicaza1066 he didn't say anything to offended you. But he is right there its easy to understand why people hate the last jedi. Eternals is a mixed bag for most. There are things to like about and others not so much. I can't say the same for the last jedi though
I'm kind of hating all the "yeah this was clearly a movie setting stuff up for later, but I'm excited to see where it all goes" I've been seeing various places, including here. Because remember when we all hated when DC did that with their movies, when Sony did that with the amazing spiderman movies, when universal did it with the mummy to try to set up the dark universe all at once? Stop using the excuse of "oh, it's just setting stuff up for later." Blockbuster movies shouldn't be a pilot episode. A movie should feel satisfying on its own, or at worst require some knowledge of previous series entries.
True. See The Fellowship of the Ring, for example. It's part of a trilogy but it's completely satisfying as an independent movie and there aren't excuses of "oh, this will be better developed in the sequels, I promise you".
I agree, but you have to admit that some Marvel movies started off really badly and ended up having good sequels that served the MCU, I don't think it's just because it's Marvel that people are tolerating that. It's because it actually happened that a franchise had a modest beginning and became much better. But yes when we speak about the movie itself, the fact that it's setting up everything shouldn't be an excuse for it not to be good.
@@Ratchet2431 I always think Lord of the Rings is a bad example as, one, it was litterally written as one huge book in it's original format, and two where it was going was already many years done before the Peter Jackson movies were even in Peter Jackson's rough script process. And three, the audience knew it was part one of three which gave them different expectations entering the experience. That being said, movies that just set up other movies, even when done well, are getting on my nerves. If you build an intriguing story with good characters I am going to enjoy that story AND want more. Even if a sequel or future installment redeems a past work. The fact that work couldn't stand on it's own still makes that previous work incomplete and flawed.
I watched this a couple nights ago, and I agree with you on almost all counts. It didn't feel like they had any real bonds, the movie hinges on their relationships and it felt like they barely knew each other. Druig though, was the eternal I knew the best. He struggled the most with their task, he had different facets of his personality that came out depending on who he was interacting with, and I think the reason people latched on so hard to him and Makkari is because they have so much POTENTIAL. The movie didn't give them enough screen time to become actively boring like sersi and ikarus. Also more Phastos next time please he seems interesting and nice. I buy into Ikarus being the villain because I personally disliked him start to finish and he was acting kinda shady. Not in an interesting way just an obvious one
I feel like the MCU is tooo big at this point to ever have another infinity war where we can get character development like Doctor Stranges. I feel like we heading for a multiple big event point. Like one will be just a big earth threat, one with the eternals will be a universe threat and then the final one with Kang as a mulitverse threat that vaguely tie together. If not we're gonna have too many strings to tie and it'll feel less and less relatable/having time to get attached to characters
"THE MCU is too big", the marvel comics universe is way bigger than the MCU hands down, there are so many alternate timelines, dimensions, universes and monsters, the MCU hasn't even started yet, trust me Kang isn't even the peak of big.
@@comedygod522 right? If they can't handle just this then maybe they should just stop making movies and stick to comics. It will be very sad if the MCU died a slow painful death.
@@emma-rdgs "too big", no it's not and the comics are NOT easier to digest, there are still many questions people have on shit that people have known for years.
@@comedygod522 It is easier to digest bc the story is always more complete and takes the time to be developed correctly (even if they drag it too much sometimes with thousand of comics). This is hard to do in movies, bc you only have 2hours to introduce the characters and tell the story, but it's not impossible : the avengers worked well bc the characters all had atleast one movie dedicated to them with only one villain to fight in a reasonably expanded universe. So when I say the MCU is too big, I mean that it's shoving 10 new characters per movie without giving them any depths and expand the universe to much.
Speaking as who loved the movie, I can't disagree with MOST of the criticism given about the movie in this video. What I will say though is while the characters definitely could have been fleshed out a lot more, I still found them very likeable and entertaining, and I felt like the film gave me enough of their perspectives on the situation, their personal struggles and the in group conflict for me to be invested. While I hope that they get more exploration moving forward, I can say I already care about some of the Eternals than I do than some established MCU character like Dr Strange or Captain Marvel. Their is a lot of things this film does right, and does wrong, but I also feel like some elements of this movie are very subjective, and which side you fall on will basically determine how feel about it. I acknowledge that some elements of this film ticked a lot of personal boxes for me, that I can overlook it flaws, but I also do think that these movies flaws don't justify the amount of negatively this film is getting. Yes, this film could have been way better, I still think what we got was very good given everything it was trying to do.
I think the Ikaris-Sersei situation wasn't as compelling. I felt bad for Makkari when she thought Druig died and for Thena MORE than Sersei being betrayed, even though that plot was focal
I had the exact same thought when I came out of the theatre watching this movie. I was like, I read so much about it and was hyped up too, an excellent cast, setting up Black Knight, Celestials but my thoughts were 'Its good but underwhelming'. Also agreed that it would have done wayyyyyyy better as a Disney+ series of 5-6 episodes. The one thing I was most bothered by was that Kingo never shows up in the final fight. I kept waiting for him to show up out of nowhere like Han Solo but he never does. I understand that he didn't want to fight his family over whats right but come on man you gotta pick a side. If you believe in 'Arishem's design' then fight for it. Don't be a chicken. Thats the worst and then he comes back in final scenes like it was nothing. Also the fight scene between Makkari and Ikaris was fucking lit. I think all of us enjoyed that a lot! It was basically Flash vs Superman but infinite times better!
Before I watch this, I must say I really enjoyed Eternals, it was a gorgeous movie with great characters, all the shots were very pretty, but I do think they tried to tell too much story for one movie. They tried to introduce 10 characters and tell 7,000 years of backstory while dealing with a world ending event. I agree with a lot of people who were saying we should have had a Disney + series to introduce them and tell their past, with maybe the movie being about the situation with Tiamut hatching. Still holding out the hope for a Disney + prequel series in the future. I hope these characters return as well. Although I have to say they did a very good job weaving the past and present together.
This movie taught me to not listen to critics Imo this is one of those movies where u have to like the vibes and know what u are getting into. I personally REALLY loved it But i get why some people won’t like it BUT, some people just get mad over anything People just EXISTING isn’t an agenda
True , people were freaking out before the movie even came out because of the diverse characters in it calling it propaganda , but what are they supposed to do , continue featuring majorly white characters till the end of time?
@@gremlinprincess the most complaints I've heard is it's too many characters for a movie like this. Tbh I don't think most people remembered about the diversity part. But I will say critics hating this movie surprised me considering their track record these past few years
@@gremlinprincess I think it had less to do with diversity with most people(including me) and more about it being an okay movie. That's because it was so jerked off by most people that we all expected an amazing movie. The potential they had was insane. Think about the actors and the director. All amazing people. Just didn't live up to the hype.
I thought the movie was alright, and I'm hoping they can expand on characters in the future, but the thing that annoyed me the most was Ikaris' ending, like why did he kill himself??? He's set up to be a character that will do whatever he wants to get what he wants but then all of a sudden he has a change of heart in like the last 10 minutes. I feel like they did it just for the literary reference tbh
It doesn't matter because the Eternals are just made, so the Celestials have just to make a new Ikaris and just like that Marvel have his Ikaris (and a "good" one) again. So esay.
I think it's better to look at a Ikaris somebody that they could do whatever it takes. However, thought and action are two different things. After getting two of his family members killed it was the only way to atone. Not to mention Phastos or Thena would have killed him.
@@s.t2575 How is taking the cowards' way out by committing suicide actually atoning for his sins? Wouldn't atonement actually mean trying to make up for his shortcomings? Actively work to make up for his past actions? Maybe devote himself to defending humanity as Ajak and Gilgamesh probably would've wanted? That sounds like better options than just milking himself.
TLDR: I’m just repeating what he said since this is exactly how I feel. The biggest red flag for me was the trailer. Fyi I’m not a Marvel fan, so I have no idea what is it about whatsoever. Usually the only time I want to watch a movie is when the trailers make me feel engaged, but this is not the case. I still had no idea what the movie is going to be about and what’s the motives of the eternals. I watched the trailer in the cinema twice, yet both times feel really empty for me. I went to watch it with my friends anyway since they are Marvel fans. I told them to not expect too much, and surprise surprise, we all dislike it. We kinda agree that from 2/3 onwards was kinda boring and feels ridiculous long. My personal pet peeve is the exact same problem. They touched on so many topics but never bother to do anything with it. Like why would you bring it up but act like no one ever said anything? Also Sprite could’ve been one of, if not the best character in the entire movie, but instead they cut it short. I mean her betrayal is still somewhat reasonable and not completely irrational but there are so much depth you can build out of her. I don’t hate the movie, but I don’t like it either. It would’ve worked so much better as a series if they’re going to give each individual characters a subplot.
I am a huge marvel fan but you’re 100% right about the trailer! I felt like something was off about it and I wasn’t too hyped for it. I had a gut feeling it wasn’t gonna be great. The trailer felt somewhat…cheesy? At least for me. And also it didn’t wow me too.
i finally saw Eternals last night. i agree with most of the points in this video, but also feel relatively positive about the movie. had plenty of flaws, but good performances, stunning visuals, and a he non-linear structure kept me engaged. There were a few jarring editing choices which i think were unintentionally comical, and some baffling writing decisions (why does kingo leave before the climactic battle?), but for a marvel film it felt pretty fresh. i enjoyed it more than Black Widow
'why does kingo leave before the climactic battle?' bc he agrees with Ikarius but cannot make himself fight others. Also, he thinks Ikarius is so much stronger that he will win. I mean, it is said in the film why he did it.
I COMPLETLY disagree with the point you made about Ikaris, having him oppose his family so harshly was very well built since the beggining, he always felt cold and distant, if not for Sersi he straight up wouldn't care about humanity, he (much like Captain Marvel) only knew how to be a soldier, he had a single purpose. His blind faith created the entire action of the last act, how fun would it be only see them become unimind and Sersi freezing Tiamut? It also made the whole collapse of the cult of Arishem much more believeble because it affected these very different characters in very different ways, as expected.
Cult 🤣 And I agree. He was always just so shady. I mean Thena, Ajack and Druig were all shady but just in a way that they would be opposed to the Eternals’ plans all the time not that they would try to kill their family. Ikaris on the other hand gave me murderer vibes!!
Yeah I think it would've been better if it was a series too. But I'll give it credit for being different and visually more pleasing than the entirety of MCU, they actually used the budget to travel and film in real locations and didn't use the green screen that much and the CGI was well done. And I'm actually looking forward to seeing these characters again, I'm not attached to all of them tho because there's so much going on and they don't let you get to know all of them, but I'm still very excited too see them in the future.
Personally I didn't feel completely underwhelmed cause I mostly fell in love with these characters especially Thena. Although the her storyline wasn't the best I could've been I did love how you could see how broken this character is, maybe it's just Angela doing an amazing job with it but I also loved how you could see that she was so through it all because of everything she feels and how visibly you could see her fight with her life. I'm just obsessed with Thena I only wanna see her tbh
I liked the multiple plot points. The deviant arch felt like it was representing the Eternals as a family with how Kro was giving out powers to the others and acted like a hive mind. Thena killing him…it? was like a concussion to the family saga of them killing Ajack and Gilgamesh and out a bow on their family relationship. While the celestial arch felt like it was the superhero plot line were they have to save the world and was wrapped is nicely. Plus I also like how the Eternals have such a nice diversity of powers not just magic, strength and speed. Individually they aren’t too overpowered but as a team their powers allow them to do anything. Need a distraction: Sprite. need speed:Makkari: need mind control: Druig need technopathy:Phastos need flight: Ikaris need godly matter manipulation: Sersi. When any of them dies it really hampers the team by a lot showing how important they all are. They have basically every power excepts magic. It really makes them feel more like a unit and thus a family.
I felt like the "main two" of the eternals were picked to be that because they were Gemma Chan and Richard Madden and they were supposed to form a cool, standard-beautiful, young couple (?). I felt so much more love coming from Gilgamesh and Thena, even if it was never stated that their relationship was anything other than platonic. Gilgamesh's death was the only thing I felt in the entire film. He cared for Thena and looked after her for thousands of years, while Ikaris just walked out on Sersi without even making up an excuse. Also, there were writing issues that wouldn't have been overlooked in an MCU film just because they had to squeeze SO MUCH in two hours. At the final battle, Druig disappears after being lasered into the dirt by Ikaris and when he comes back he says to Sersi "I can't do it, it has to be you" or something. But we haven't seen him try! We haven't seen him fail! He should have failed and then reached out to Sersi, not just TOLD her that he couldn't do it himself. And what about Kingo just refusing to take part in the final battle? The climax of the film? Come on! If they all feel like "family" and he agrees with Ikaris but doesn't want to kill anyone else because of it, shouldn't he feel conflicted? Shouldn't he struggle? We need to see some of that! He should at least have been in the middle of the battle trying to keep them all from killing each other until the Celestial emerges, because then he would have served what he believed was his purpose and no member of his "family" would have died. No? It was just so much exposition crammed into two hours.
I'd heard a lot of the mixed review, so I went into the movie with as few expectations as possible. But more importantly, I went into it wanting to like. These days, with movies and shows, I WANT to like them. I don't force myself to, but I also don't let the critical reception or expectation stop me. It feels good to like things. This wasn't the best movie ever, but I enjoyed it, and I'd like to see more of the Eternals. Side note: I found the last Ikaris scene kinda funny. Because he's Icarus and he literally flies too close to (well, into) the sun.
To me the movie felt like they tried to adapt a huge comic with miles of subtext and exploration of fascinating ideas (basically 75 issues of DC's The Sandman) into 3 hours. If these characters got the same deal (a series) like Sandman did with Netflix it would have been incredible. Even the concepts are similar.
I think the end fight scene against ikaris is actually pretty good. Not like endgame, infinity war or even winter soldier type level. Those are the best fight scenes in the mcu. Edit: also, shang chi is one of those top 10 best/well choreographed fight scenes
So many good ideas unfortunately underdeveloped. A Disney+ limited series would've been perfect. An episode for each member of the team, beginning with the entire team, and being capped off with Kro and other Deviants. "Story" Skeleton Ep1 - Sersi - Shows her wanting to aid humaity in becoming less divided and more united. Ep2 - Druig - Shows his wanting to unite humanity trough control instead of growth. Ep3 - Gilgamesh - Shows his becoming a mythic warrior who has a strong drive to protect, even if not wanted. Ep4 - Kingo - Shows his infatuation with humanity's expressions of imagination. Ep5 - Makkari - Shows her growing boredom with humanity. Ep6 - Sprite - Shows her spreading wonder and joy, despite her inability to be truly happy. Ep7 - Thena - Shows her becoming a mythic warrior and gradually fracturing mind. Ep8 - Phastos - Shows his wanting to advance humanity, eventual disgust with it, and partial return of faith. Ep9 - Ikaris - Shows his inability to connect with humanity and arrow-like mindset. Ep10 - Ajak - Shows her growing separation from her goal and eventual turn against it. Ep11 - The Emergence - The collision of every member's viewpoint and eventual resolution.
This is the fourth review/breakdown of Eternals i've seen, and everyone seems to have the same issues with it. That does not give me confidence in the future of the MCU.
4:54 see, I don’t have what you have with feeling like that’s too much for one movie because, for me, the conflict with the deviants, the Celestials, Sersi and Ikarus’s love story and the introspection on the nature of life are so obviously not “subplots” but complementary aspect of just one story. Like all of those things are so tightly woven together into the central conflict I’m not sure how anyone could feel they’re getting in each other’s way.
Honestly, when I saw the movie, I liked it, but it was honestly kind of disappointing. Starting a series of movies with an ensemble cast means it doesn't have the time to truly explore the individual characters, leaving them kind of flat and uninteresting. It would have been better as a series like wandavision, giving them more time to explore both the setting of an eternal conflict between deities (of sorts), and would have given it more time for dramatic build up. Alongside that, I really thought the main romance of the story was kind of unnecessary to the plot? Like, it doesn't seem to move anything forward, it was just there because the writers realized they needed to give ikarus more depth so he isn't just a superman clone. It's kind of a major flaw within television as a whole, using romantic relationships to give flat characters depth, because then writers tend to ignore the character's relationships that aren't romantic. This movie did a good job of making sure the romance didn't dictate Sersi's or Ikarus' characters, but they still spent so much unnecessary time building it up.
Ahhh I'm so happy you made a video about Eternals. One thing I want to point out is that Ikaris's Terminator twist doesn't really come out of nowhere. Ajak said twice throughout the first hal of the movie that Ikaris is crazy about his faith in the Celestials. Druig once alluded to it too (I think). Halfway through the movie, I was just waiting for him to snap and smash the hell out of the rest of the team. In my opinion, it didn't even happen TOO late.
My re-write: 1. We see the Eternals arrive. 2. Montage of their history. Preferably in a creative way through animation. 3. Flash forward. Ikaris is a regular Joe who has forgotten that he's an Eternal (explaining why no help against Thanks). Suddenly, a bunch of people materialize around him and he remembers. He flies off. 4. Ikaris finds Sersi but she doesn't know him. She runs away and is attacked by a Deviant, then she wakes up. Ikaris says they were trapped in their own heads and need to leave. 5. Travel around and wake them all up. Thena's memories are damaged. 6. Kro turns up and tells them he senses something happening in the planet's core. They're divided on whether to believe him. Some fight him. Phastos dies. Kro leaves. 7. They track down Ajak but find her corpse. Find some clues and realise that Ikaris went to her before Sersi. Learn that Ajak had been approached by Kro and Ikaris, enraged that she considered working with their enemy, kills her in an outburst. 8. Big fight, Ikaris overpowered and flies away with Sprite. 9. Unearth ship, find out about baby celestial. Realise that they each loved the lives they were living and want to save the planet. 10. Stop the emergence. Kro reverts to type now that the planet is saved and his livestock (humans) not about to wipe out. He attacks Sersi who is weak after using the uni-power. Ikaris flies him into the sun. This could be stretched out to a series but, I think, could be economised to fit a movie.
Frankly I adored this movie. Like, REALLY really adored it. I feel like I watched a completely different movie to the one people are finding so many issues with. It might even be my new favorite MCU movie honestly.
The one thought that kept going through my head throughout the ending was: “How tf are they gonna beat a fucking celestial.” So, I felt a molecule of satisfaction at the ending, more of an “I knew Arishem wasn’t gonna let them get away with that shit” type of thing and less of an “Omg I can’t wait for the next movie!” type thing, but I digress. The part of me that likes pretty movies gives it an 8/10, but the part of me that likes good characters and plots gives it a 4/10. Would watch if I was doing a Marvel marathon but not for any other reason.
Now that I watched the movie and your video for the second time I kind of agree with the most things said in the video. It could’ve been way better and more detailed as a mini series. Also I totally agree on the pointlessness of the deviant villain. Like what is he trying to do? Kill all Eternals so he has to die inevitably bc the Thiamut is destroying the earth????? And Ikaris killing himself at the end of the movie??? (I first thought he flew away to snitch on the others to Arishem and got so confused that he just straight up flew into the sun) But out of some unknown reason I still really really really liked that movie. I really don’t know why but I do. And I really hope that they do something great with the Eternals in the future. Also: Your videos are really great! I’ve been watching them for a while now (even if I dont know the shows most of the time) and I really enjoy them! Your videos on Fleabag and Sex ed even convinced me to start watching those shows and I don’t regret that at all.
Something I find fascinating is that despite all the overlapping stories that never really get the time to develop that they deserve, there are SO MANY scenes of the group just kind of....hanging out and talking about nothing important. Like...they just....sit down and....talk....the world is ending and nobody has a personality, but sure....sit down to dinner and make small talk....
I would have liked to seen this movie made in three parts directed by guillermo del toro the first about the thinker Eternals and their awakening and understanding of the impending threat and a plan to save earth from the celestial birth. The second movie sees the thinkers awaken the fighters with who are without their memories leading to a clash. The third would see them all team up. Guillermo del toro would be amazing, Hellboy shows his understanding of darker comic book characters and would align well with Blade and Moon Knight.
I think to put it plainly, maybe just imagine the of Avengers came out of nowhere without the other standalone character movies. People were excited for avengers because they knew the characters well. I haven't watched eternals, but shared a thought
The Eternals, The Deviants and the Golden Celestial was one of the first comic book storylines I read as a kid and it’s always stuck with me ever since then, like the three random Punisher books I had which I was way too young to read. Too bad it couldn’t be done justice. They are actually super cool.
I think you kind of summed up my feelings exactly. I still think it's good, but there was just so much going on. I remember walking out of the theaters thinking, "That was good, but if people don't like the movie, I understand."
Agree. I took a bathroom break and saw I wasn’t even half way done with the movie and I was like wow feels like I’ve been watching this forever now. It would’ve been better as a show then a movie that way we would care about these characters. Totally true that it felt like 10 movies in one.
I love the idea that this could would have worked as a mini series. When people ask me about this movie I always respond with ".........I liked it 🙂" and I always leave a big pause cause although I did like it and totally LOVE mikkari there are a lot of things I would change and want developed more. It's definitely interesting thats all I'll say lol.
You put it perfectly. Literally everything you thought is the same I thought. This movie feels somehow too long and too short. Like it needed to be WAY longer for it to fit all the stories it was trying to tell, and WAY WAY WAY shorter cause BY GOT it feels Eternal.
Chloe Zhao: The eternals are a family and 5 of its members are attracted to each other. Gilgamesh and Thena also have a near romantic relationship. Kingo, Phastos and Ajak are the only ones left
Yeah, I remember walking out and wishing it was made into a series instead. I really liked the hints of characters that we got, and thought there was a lot to explore. I'd be curious to see if there were a longer version, whether it would make more sense. Definitely agree that Kro was a miss. And Thena's plot.
I feel like every movie I've watched in the last decade or so has had the same issues (which is why I don't bother these days). They try to cram in as many twists and turns and plot points as possible, as if that is what matters, not how they get there, if it makes sense, or if we care about the characters. They end up being visually stunning but are otherwise empty. They seem to miss that what makes things shocking, interesting, etc. isn't the thing itself, but who it happens to. Then again, I don't think they are in it for artistry's sake, so much as making as much money as possible. It's like they hook people in with visuals and nostalgia/legacy (lots of superhero movies, unnecessary remakes).
I agree with everything you said here except the part about all movies being like that currently. Because that's just not true imo, and you have sadly missed out on so many good ones
I agree that the current movies are badly written mishmash of trying to have the cleverest twists. Think that people have forgotten how to write a decent screenplay. I remember there were several movies in a row, many with big stars, who had essentially the same plot: that people are being killed, and the protagonist is the one doing it, even though we see they are reacting like everyone else to the killer. But then, the twist was it was all in the protagonists head. Just got cheated out of a movie.
YOUR FACE!!! WE GET TO SEE YOUR FACE! Oh my, you're very handsome. I love it when youtubers change things up and show us their faces for a video because it feels more interesting to have someone talking to you like you're in the room with them
Wandavision was fine, the only bad part was the finale. And tbh all of wandavision haters seem to be people who didn’t understand the complexity of the story, misogynists who just don’t like powerful female characters, and individuals seeking a more action based- generic marvel style series
WandaVision definitely could not have worked as a film. It’s a psychological thriller that uses the sitcom format for emotional value. That’s like saying Scream, a horror film about horror films, could’ve been a radio show.
I haven’t seen the movie but I love your videos so much that I couldn’t help but watch. Please keep including footage of you speaking in your videos! It’s so cool after watching you for so long!
I feel like this would have been better as a Disney+ show. It could have fleshed out characters and motives some more.
I agree.
There are rumors that you could see a prequel to the eternals
That's for sure and then make this movie. Because I barely remember any of these character's names besides Thena, Sprite, and Ajack
Yeah like a New separate thing
Yea,it's a classic example of something that should have at least started as a TV Show.

They had a few scenes together yet they had way more chemistry than the main couple...
It was funny sweet and actually held chemistry even if for only a few seconds and I'll probably remember it the most fondly as well yeah

Considering the theme of the show. It might have been successful like Loki and wandavision
Don't be surprised, because this is the same studio that green light the SW sequel trilogy without an endgame.

Could you imagine if Eternals was a show, and we got a Time’s-Arrow-style episode that takes place entirely inside Thena’s shattered mind, at the end of which she finally achieves clarity and the true nature of the Celestials is revealed? That would have been incredible.
Ugh yes a lot of wasted Thena potential even in this movie they could've done it. Or made Sersei just a little more interesting herself.

@@ellaelliott4415 well it is just a comic just because it's a movie don't mean it invalidates the comics it's inspired from.
I hate this mindset. We SHOULD be seeing different tones clash against each other. A character like The Punisher is going to feel weird next to The Fantastic Four. Half of MCU's problem is that they feel the need to have every character fit perfectly near each other. That's not necessary.
Yeah it's energy and flow is WAY different.
It tried too hard to be artistic and dramatic

she is criminally underused
This entire movie was held together by how hard each of the actors were trying to make it work. Props to them for giving it their all from a script with as many holes as swiss cheese
11:16 EXCUSE ME. Druig had one of the most emotional stories of the eternals because he literally had the power to stop conflict and he wasn't allowed to because it would mess with humans free will, the amount of humanity and free will he has not to use his power across the entire planet is emphized through the actors performance, then by the end of the movie he the eternal to control the unimind pitches in to save the planet; opinions are opinions but you did ask, so...Druig had a story.
a superpower is not a story
@@bruja_cat now am confused again was he not suppose to use it to stop conflict or use it at all, I think it was the conflict part that was restricted
i think his potential was wasted and instead he was mostly used for witty jokes and asides (like the whole makkari interactions are fun, but they show only one facet of him in short scenes, not the whole picture).
I'm 100% with you on this!
Nothing wrong with being an optimist, the problem is that Disney/ Marvel will still cram in a political agenda in their entertainment.

This is all I got:
Thena - “crazy”
Ajak - leader
Sersi - loves humans
Ikaris - rule follower?
Gilgamesh - strong?
Kingo - jokester/actor (wow look 2)
Sprite - adult child
Phastos - engineering/father.
makkari - deaf/loner
Deaf 💀💀💀
I wouldn’t really give them credit for Druig because at the end of the day he is basically the Eternals’s version of Loki.
When you look at it through that lens you can see that MCU Druig is a mix of Comic Loki with a Little of Comic Druig’s personality
I love this movie and Druig is my favourite too. No, I don't read the comics.
Sersi also loves instagram for some reason
@@lavenderfield01 hahahahaha idk why this made me laugh so much
I love Makkari, just because one of my FAVOURITE scenes in the movie is just after Ikaris reveals himself to be evil and everyone's shocked and scared, and suddenly Makkari bursts in, completely failing to read the room, like 'Hey guys good news! I found the Celestial!"
lmao
The spark's still there; I just can't move on."
girl how did you watch all that in three days??? I love it hahaha
I think he only checked up on her because he knew about the deviants not because of the earthquake.
Yeah, I always told myself while watching "I can't like this guy, and idk why". His character felt so cardboard-ish too. His whole personality was just "Man" lol. Sersi's guilty of this as well.

At that point, it should of split into two movies to flesh the story and characters out.
@@normadgarmez7026or a show
The strangest part of the movie to me is that even though its so long and there's so much exposition, a lot of it is pointless.

I feel like Shazam is the perfect example of a movie with a big cast that works up to the feeling of “family” between everyone. even when they’re not fully there, you can just see the chemistry
edit: I meant only that Shazam is a movie that wants to be about family in a lot of ways too, and that imo it accomplishes the *feel* of family by the end. the characters are realistic and the actors have chemistry.
Eh Shazam had this problem too, Billy barely interacts with the other kids aside from Freddy and kind of Darla
Shazam wasn’t a good or memorable movie.
Main villain should have been Black Adam. Them the new Black Adam could be a sequel of sorts to Shamzam.
Exactly
1000000000000 %
This felt way better than the first Avengers movies tbh. Different strokes I guess but I felt the first Avengers movies are incredibly lame
*Crying*
Not like how a real family would interact with bickering and jokes and annoying one another and.
When (Spoiler)
Thena killed King Kro I was happy not only because the world is safe from deviants but because Thena’s arch ended and she managed to avenge Gilgamesh.
I wish, that:
1. We had more Angelina Jolie - I feel that she was on screen for maybe 10 minutes, but with so little portrayal of her character she just punches it through her performance
I agree with all the above- minus Harry Styles. He stays!

Oh, I hate No Way Home. It was more of a collection of cameos than a film.

Let’s be real here the moment this was announced after Thanos no amount of excuses would work. Matter of fact the whole story doesn’t work either way.

I liked it. Wasn’t great, I didn’t like how they just forgave Sprite after a few tears when she literally stabbed Sersi and was okay with Ikaris killing Ajax. But I agree some of their deaths were not emotional because it felt like they were more like coworkers than family.
I just love how you're unashamedly referring to Jon Snow as Jon Snow 😂🤣

Lol
They criminally underutilized Thena anyway - she should've been the leader of the team.

A movie should feel satisfying on its own, or at worst require some knowledge of previous series entries.
exactly, it seems like cause it’s marvel they tolerate it but as you said, with TASM they just started talking bad stuff all the time
Same here. Start off with a series of great movies before setting up a universe.
You said all the exact feelings I had watching Eternals perfectly, thank you for putting it into words so well
I watched this a couple nights ago, and I agree with you on almost all counts.
You literally mentioned every single critique i had in my mind walking out of the theater, that i just couldnt put into words, Thank you!
I feel like the MCU is tooo big at this point to ever have another infinity war where we can get character development like Doctor Stranges. I feel like we heading for a multiple big event point.
Totally agree!
I think the Ikaris-Sersei situation wasn't as compelling. I felt bad for Makkari when she thought Druig died and for Thena MORE than Sersei being betrayed, even though that plot was focal
@@blehh010 moreso I felt more about the Deviants and even Ikaris than Sersi
This movie taught me to not listen to critics
Imo
this is one of those movies where u have to like the vibes and know what u are getting into.
I personally REALLY loved it
But i get why some people won’t like it
BUT, some people just get mad over anything
People just EXISTING isn’t an agenda
True , people were freaking out before the movie even came out because of the diverse characters in it calling it propaganda , but what are they supposed to do , continue featuring majorly white characters till the end of time?
you shouldnt listen to critics in general.... they are all bought and paid for!
Me too!
Ikaris definitely didn't die. It's the comic rule, no body probably not dead
@@aureliekika So easy. Barely an inconvenience.
I think the trailer was made for the fan of the comics rather than the rest of the people...
i finally saw Eternals last night. i agree with most of the points in this video, but also feel relatively positive about the movie. had plenty of flaws, but good performances, stunning visuals, and a he non-linear structure kept me engaged.
Cult
🤣
And I agree. He was always just so shady. I mean Thena, Ajack and Druig were all shady but just in a way that they would be opposed to the Eternals’ plans all the time not that they would try to kill their family. Ikaris on the other hand gave me murderer vibes!!
What's funny is that he was the winter soldier in captain America 😆 🤣
I love how I’d never have guessed how you look.
That’s awesome.
You look fresh man! :)
"Story" Skeleton
Ep1 - Sersi - Shows her wanting to aid humaity in becoming less divided and more united.
My re-write:
I was literally rewatching the Riverdale video when this came up in my feed.
This riverdale video is incredible
(I first thought he flew away to snitch on the others to Arishem and got so confused that he just straight up flew into the sun)
But out of some unknown reason I still really really really liked that movie.
Totally true that it felt like 10 movies in one.
i only just got back from seeing this in the cinemas a couple hours ago, great timing haha ^^
Let’s be honest here Disney was banking on the star power to get butts into seats. A tv show isn’t going to make them the money they sorely needed.
Most of the big blockbusters I have seen have been like this. The small indie movies I’ve seen haven’t.
I love it when youtubers change things up and show us their faces for a video because it feels more interesting to have someone talking to you like you're in the room with them
It feels like Eternals and Wandavision stole each other's formats. Wandavision could have been a good movie, Etetnals could have been a great series
Eh I think WandaVision worked as a series because it's meant to build up intrigue over the weeks
WandaVision was perfect just the way it was.
Wandavision was fine, the only bad part was the finale. And tbh all of wandavision haters seem to be people who didn’t understand the complexity of the story, misogynists who just don’t like powerful female characters, and individuals seeking a more action based- generic marvel style series
@@Naomi-xu4hq 🤓🤓
WandaVision definitely could not have worked as a film. It’s a psychological thriller that uses the sitcom format for emotional value. That’s like saying Scream, a horror film about horror films, could’ve been a radio show.
I love how you put my feelings into words
I haven’t seen the movie but I love your videos so much that I couldn’t help but watch. Please keep including footage of you speaking in your videos! It’s so cool after watching you for so long!
I think marvel got so used to making a specific style of movie and when they tried to do something different, they fucked it up
