I went with the compact and the 9ah flexvolt battery. Never looked back. The corded has been moved from the truck to the garage. Nothing beats not having to run miles of cord for a cut.
I may go the compact too as I won’t be doing alot of demo. I’m on the 60 volt platform with my skill saw but think the compact could be useful in certain situations. My brother already has the 6o volt version.
Great review. I still use my 20V compact reciprocating and I love it because of the size. I myself, had a corded saw and I would never go back to it. Maybe one day, Dewalt will release a COMPACT 60V reciprocating saw.
Nicely done video. Surprised how well the old brushed one did. Had me convinced for a bit there to go that direction until I watched to the end. I think the weight and getting into tight spaces is a pretty big advantage for the XR compact, plus reciprocating saws really eat batteries.
Awesome back-to-back vid! I find that looking at the spec sheets shows all the saws to be damn near identical , so these performance vids really help differentiate.
The exact review I was looking for! Got the brushed 20v for my birthday today. Thinking about returning it and paying the extra to get the xr brushless compact!
Earlier today I was using the 60 volt to cut some notches out of the back side of a 2 x 4 stud wall and thinking man this would be a lot easier with the compact.
I've done the same. I have two bags of batteries and not one cord. It's so much better without the cord. Dewalt has really stepped it up. Cordless used to be for quick little jobs. Knick make stuff. It was a joke really. Not anymore. I run a whole job without a cord. I love my DeWalt tools. As you know they aren't cheap. I've got the compact xr and it does the jobs I need. Free battery from acme tools when I bought it
ToolRev, i wish they would revise the FlexVolt with a rafter hook, updated motor, orbital action, and quality adjustable shoe. I’m in dewalts line and the compact does what I need it to; however, I did some heavy demo on a house helping a friend and their M-18 fuel super sawzall was amazing. I know we are still gen 1 FlexVolt but they revised the 575 and 577
Just bought my compact brushless today, cant wait to get to the job site Monday to start using it. I do wish It had a rafter hook though. I might rig one up on it somehow
The "new" XR recip is just the rebranded Flexvolt Advantage and Power Detect. Thus, still no rafter hook. See here th-cam.com/video/fwoQJHKArdg/w-d-xo.html
Just picked up the dcs389x2 on account that my craftman 20v brushed motor reciprocating saw literally let the smoke out and just about caught fire after some pretty mild use if you ask me. It was a little over 4 years old but it never saw any real use so i was bummed it gave out on the middle of my demo project tearing down my shed. At first i thought it was a dead battery causing it to fuss so o slapped a fresh one on and it was good for about 5 seconds before it did what it was doing before which was a sort of glitchy thing where ot would cut out and then very slow very weak reciprocations then cut out again. It was around 102 out and it felt warm but nothing crazy. Then it started crackling and popping and shooting sparks out of the vents 😬 it smelled like burning electronics. I knew it was cooked. I'm hoping this new DeWalt lasts me much longer and i actually get my $480 worth out of it because i don't think i got my moneys worth out of that craftsman
@@toolrev it does have the fast charger but the batteries from what the pictures show are DCB609 9ah flexvolt 20/60 batteries. That was one of the main reasons I got the kit. It was impossible to price out the saw and batteries separately for cheaper than what I got the kit for. At least from all the places I shop at and for a delivery time that I needed it by.
@@insaneTrout yeah those are the 9s I buy. the 6 amp Flexvolts use 18650 cells, where the 9s use 21700s. Big difference in power as seen here th-cam.com/video/jBiCKUnBC3w/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared&t=368
The smoothest operation of almost any recip saw is the older Ridgid GenX-4. When I demonstrate Milwaukee Fuel VS Ridgid GenX-4 everyone is shocked by how much quieter, smoother and so much less vibration with the Ridgid. Milwaukee fuel by comparison almost vibrates out of your hands and is so noisy you need hearing protection. With tools the excess noise and vibration is wasted energy, sucking the battery down faster.
Thanks, only thing missing from this video is the wonkey background music that so many others have, and you didn't show us how to open the box. (That was sarcasm) thanks for a great video. I think I'll error on the side of the 60v.
Ha, I know right. Ya, the 60V for me too for now. Hopefully DeWalt will release a new brushless, rafter hooked, 20 volt to compete with Makitas brushless 18V, which I think is the best on the market right now.
You had a great review , as so many others have already said . You had all the detail on weights , top speeds , vibration ,.lights , ease of blade changes , etc. ( Could you also add the times in the future ? I would like to know how many seconds/minutes that a task takes. )
Thanks for this comparison. Good job. Much appreciated. I'm trying to decide on something for use as an electrical apprentice. I like the features of the Dewalt compact recip. But I'm also looking at the Milwaukee M12 Hackzall. I've heard on some other review/test channels that the Dewalt compact recip. is pretty unwieldy; lots of vibration given it's power and light weight/small size. What do you think? I'm also wondering if it could be used one handed to cut EMT etc. Thank you.
The Dewalt 20 volt compact has a lot of vibration. I haven't tested it against the 12 volt Milwaukee but from what I've seen the Milwaukee looks better for one handed cutting. I'd get both and return one.
I think I meant to say the M*18* Hackzall (18v) - and the Fuel version at that. I think I've seen some trades guys using cordless recip. saws to various pipe/emt with one hand, while holding the pipe with the other hand... I think... I tried to hold the milwaukee cordless fuel recip. today at the store with one hand and it was pretty front heavy, haha. But laying on the work (emt. for eg.) would mean you're not exactly holding all the weight up with that one hand. Thanks.
If you need the best Recip, buy Milwaukee. The best DeWalt is that compact, the Flexvolt is just heavy and awkward. I use the multi blade position all the time on the DeWalt and love the quick blade change.

I have the 20v ‘compact’… it is light enough to prune trees one handed and powers through stud-work timber in seconds with a 5Ahr batt. Let’s be honest the difference in cutting time between these is a shout in the wind. Folk don’t enter timbre cutting races Lol. The compact’s positional blade is a winner if cutting close to a floor, like stud wall anchors and a cammed out screw is easily just chopped off in between the wood parts. These tools do want to jump around a lot though, especially on sheet or unsupported material.
If you only have a few branches to cut here and there I'd probably go for the compact. Here is the poole saw that I use - th-cam.com/video/zr6dOoFrbQs/w-d-xo.html
just bought the 20v non brushless recip saw because it was on sale, tried it out when I returned home and immediately could feel how badly it vibrated, nice saw for the price but will be returning due to the horrible amount of vibration the tool gives off.
Question: Will a DeWalt reciprocating saw also cut through metal pipe? I have an old pipe (approx. 3" in diameter) on our property that is partially buried. I need to cut out the exposed area of pipe to remove a tripping hazard. Will the 20V or 60V with the proper blade do this job? We already have the DeWalt FLEX volt platform with 60V and 20V tools. Thanks for any input from ToolRev or other readers!
Absolutely, I use it to cut pipe and tree roots in the dirt all the time. The 20V will do it no problem. I just got the new DeWalt 20V to review for my man Patrick 10 minutes ago so sub and hit the bell for notification if you want to see that.
@@toolrev Thanks for the info. We purchased the DeWalt 20V compact reciprocating saw and a combo set of blades from Amazon. They had a "limited time deal" with the tool only (since we already have ample batteries and chargers) for $131. Spread the word if anyone would like to do the same. Regular Amazon price is $179, but if anyone misses that deal, Coastal Country also has one on sale (for a few more days) at $159. We're ready to do some cutting in 2022!
Good review...upgrade to 12ah batteries..there worth it.... flexvolt tools are unmatched except the sawzall, it's ok..but Milwaukee super sawzall is best..the Makita avt is good...love the compact for quick jobs
Sorry Tom still working on that vid I promised you but at around 3.4 lbs the 9 amp is about a pound heavier than the 6. The six is more compact but I use the 9 often on the grinder, recip saw, etc, for heavy work. Thing is I don’t carry the 60v recip and grinder too often as DeWalt’s 20v slide switch grinder does most of what I need and I was able to replace the 60v recip saw with Milwaukee’s m18 Fuel multi tool in many cases. Something I couldn’t do with the dewalt multi. Hope this helps and that 6 vs 9 vid is on the way.
rdude8579 That's odd... I put a metal cutting Diablo blade on my old DeWalt 20 volt brushed model and it's ripped through 2" cast iron piping without issue.
John Ellis, Yea I'm looking for one to use as an electrical apprentice. Dewalt compact recip, or Milwaukee M12 Hackzall. If these are giving that guy trouble cutting "pipe" (what kind of pipe though) then that's...odd, isn't it? I'd like to know if the Dewalt compact can be used one handed while cutting EMT.
@@circle4922 I don't think that this is a one handed tool. I think that Bosch and Milwaukee make brushless and brushed 12v and 18v hackzalls. I am only a DIY not a pro
I think you need to remember though, the reason why the 60v chews through batteries, is because when it says 6ah on the battery, that is for when its running in 20v. Once you use it on a 60v tool it basically becomes a 2ah 60v battery.
6Ah @ 20V = 120Wh, 2Ah @ 60V = 120Wh. The power is the exact same. You should learn some basic electrical before commenting. Try starting with ohms law.
I wish all batteries were rated in watt hours, would make it a lot simpler to compare capacities. Having a higher voltage does help as you can have the same power and have less current, which can lead to increased efficiency due to less power dissipated as heat. Also less current can enable tools to be smaller as conductors with less current don't have to be as big.
I've had the compact version now for two years. Maybe mine is a lemon? I don't know. It drives me crazy. It will only run for a few minutes before it shuts down completely. It's impossible to do any serious demo work with it. Is it overheating? I don't know. It's been a very disapointing tool. I still use my corded MIlwaukee Super Sawzall whenever I need to be serious. I've got a bunch of Dewalt 20v stuff. Been pleased with everything except this tool. I'm on the verge of switching to Milwaukee. Looking to go battery powered with nailguns. I need an 18, 15, and framer and since this is a huge $$$ switching platforms might be a resonable thing to do. Think I might go with the Milwaukee guns. In which case I'll likely start adding their other tools as well. Another note. I used the Makita compact sawzall extensively. My old job we were set up on Makita platform exclusivly. That little Makita saw is a monster. It'll run and run and run. I could use it none stop all day to do anything and long as I had batteries to feed it the thing would never stop. Fantastic tool. No reason Dewalts saw should work like this when I've seen the Makita in action.
I've got the DCS386. When I press too hard while cutting , the blade comes out of the saw. Is this some kind of safety feature if it thinks the blade is jamming, or is it faulty?
For me, remodeling houses, yes. If I were an electrician already on Dewalt's battery platform I might go with the compact. The 60 volt has much less vibration making it more comfortable to use. It's heavier but faster. If you don't like it DeWalt will take it back within 90 days.

Regular Amazon price is $179, but if anyone misses that deal, Coastal Country also has one on sale (for a few more days) at $159. We're ready to do some cutting in 2022!
Thank you! This is exactly the review I needed!
Thank you, I love this video! It has been truly informative and given excellently.
Good review...upgrade to 12ah batteries..there worth it.... flexvolt tools are unmatched except the sawzall, it's ok..but Milwaukee super sawzall is best..the Makita avt is good...love the compact for quick jobs
Great review! Dewalt should hire the guy!
Great job on this. I really just wanted to know the 60v flex compared with the 20v battery on the same flex volt sazall.
Ditto, i thought the test was going to keep going until they died one by one.
How do the 6ah batteries compare to the 9ah power , bulkiness and weight?
Great review and comparison! Thanks
I bought the compact instead of 60v and it stalls a lot when I'm cutting pipe so I may go buy the 60v
rdude8579 That's odd... I put a metal cutting Diablo blade on my old DeWalt 20 volt brushed model and it's ripped through 2" cast iron piping without issue.
John Ellis,
Yea I'm looking for one to use as an electrical apprentice. Dewalt compact recip, or Milwaukee M12 Hackzall. If these are giving that guy trouble cutting "pipe" (what kind of pipe though) then that's...odd, isn't it?
I'd like to know if the Dewalt compact can be used one handed while cutting EMT.
Perhaps you have the wrong blade or too much pressure
@@davidbrooks9576 Yeah I guess I shouldn't let the manufacturers who make the tools explain them to me, my bad.
Great review, have helped me make the choice, thanks!
Ya I love that brushless cordless single battery Makita. Best all around cordless saw on the market in my opinion.
Excelent video. Strait to the point. Exactly what I wanted to know before buying. Thank you for helping me make up my mind!
Awesome to hear this video is still useful.
I've got the DCS386. When I press too hard while cutting , the blade comes out of the saw.
Is this some kind of safety feature if it thinks the blade is jamming, or is it faulty?
Something’s wrong with it if the blade comes out by itself. Maybe the chuck isn’t fully closing or something. Return it or send it in.
@@toolrev thanks
perfect review, for a weekend warrior noobs the 20V with a 4Ah was available for $139 at Grainger
Great clear understanding review.
What a great review top job from here in Ireland
👊
Exactly what I needed, thanks
Check back tomorrow or the next day bro I'm about to the review DeWalt's new brushless 20V recip. Spoiler- still no rafter hook :(
Well that sucks that a flexvolt only has a 2 way blade holder and no adjustable shoe.
Is there much point upgrading from a 20v compact to the 60v flexvolt? is it that much better? less vibration? etc. many thanks,
For me, remodeling houses, yes. If I were an electrician already on Dewalt's battery platform I might go with the compact. The 60 volt has much less vibration making it more comfortable to use. It's heavier but faster. If you don't like it DeWalt will take it back within 90 days.
thanks for your reply.
oh btw, I had the brushed compact - DCS387, not the newer brushless DCS367.
Quick and to the point! Thanks!
Excellent review
Is the compact horrible as far as vibration?
Compared to larger saws like DeWalt's 60 volt and Makita's 36 volt it is.
@@toolrev yes, comparing flexvolt to the compact model
Nice review!
Wow, great review! This looked professional, like a produced television show, really great presentation. Thank-you, your info really helped me make a purchasing decision.
You bet. Glad to help.
Thanks for the review.
what blades are you using?
In the video it looks like I used DeWalt, but I use everything. Mostly Diablo stuff just because their selection is usually better at Home Depot.
Run time between xr and FLEXVOLT?
Never tested it myself. They rate the XR at three times the Flexvolt, but the flex cuts faster with less effort so...
Great review pleased with ur results too
