For the vast majority of amateur golfers out there these tips are golden! Rather than following the latest 'tip' from the big TH-cam channels, which are guaranteed to ruin your game, follow this and you will definitely improve. Good work Rob. Nice to see some refreshening content which focuses on age old basics (that even tour pros still do).
Cheers mate!
Rob we need you back buddy, hope all is going well. Loved your content for years, especially the golf videos!
These are the best style of golf tips, that go with the flow of human biomechanics & feedback loops in the brain.. keep up the good work 👍⛳️
Hi Rob. I enjoyed your different method of instruction. I will try your methods as soon as it stops raining. Until then thanks for the new ideas. 👍
I think this video has just saved me a year or two on becoming scratch. I’ve recently started my journey on actually focusing on getting better at golf and getting to scratch and am actually in a bit of a rut since I’m trying out so many different swing thoughts and tips. This video has given some clarity and shown a simple direction for what to work on! Thank you very much 👍
Hope so bud. Honestly it's so easy to waste a tonne of time by dancing around different things. Watch this: th-cam.com/video/qop6UakSwEk/w-d-xo.html
Just pure coincidence I bumped into this video. It is exactly what I needed Rob. Great vid. if I may answer your question about other useful drills I would recommend the pause and hit drill you showed in this video but than pause just after take away (only after shoulder turn and arms / hands still passive). Than finish backswing and just make your swing (purpose is transition and weight shift). Together with your drills are the only drills I will stick to this season. The Tiger grid I also really like together with "Playing holes" on the range (i.e. changing clubs all the time which is what you do in course). ps. Am 5.4 hcp but working to become steady 4.0 end of this season after a lost season last year due to injury caused by speed training.....
Great vid, many thanks. I've just had a lesson from a pro at Saunton and he suggested exactly the same thing with the 9 hole grid. Glad you're enjoying golf again and good to see your still in the North of Devon at RND. See you at Saunton one day.
Good to see you back mate. I've missed your videos. No golf for me for a few months after a dislocated shoulder, so can you get some more content up so I can live vicariously through you! Once I'm back playing I'll be trying these drills. Hope all is good with you. :)
Sorry to hear about the injury mate. Trying to get a video up every couple of weeks now so will do my best!
Always really enjoy your contact. Simple and easy to take to the course. Really enjoyed the college training programme from a while back, I’m still using that spreadsheet.
Great job Rob its good to see it finally pay off and the way we discussed
Wayhay nice to see you Rob.. been a while .... please don't leave us again ... its been a journey that i can relate to watching myself through you practicing on the tube with all the different coaches that you (we) have had 😂😂 not got to 2.9 yet but down to 8 atm so keep with us and lets get the content rolling out again..... atb Andy
Cheers mate, hoping to get a video out every couple of weeks if I can 🙏
Algo works. This popped up in my feed, and it's been the best video i've seen lately for helping folk. Subbed.
Awesome, welcome aboard!
Thanks rob , I’ve been hovering around 9.5-10.5 for a couple of yrs, I think the one arm drill, and the pause is going to finally help me get to a consistent 7-8 great advice, I’ve subscribed and that’s a first for golf tips Keep up the decent content 👍
interesting stuff. I already do the Tiger pause drill because I am guilty of rushing the transistion at times but I'm definitley gonna have a look at the others aswell!
Great to see you uploading more regularly Rob, not sure if you realise how good and relatable your videos are? 👏👍
Cheers bud, that's very kind
Great, no BS video, honest and straightforward, it’s so good to see someone who has genuinely improved to a really good standard, who then shares his knowledge in a simple, no nonsense way. keep up the awesome work, loved this video. HH
Thanks man, I appreciate that!
First time you have ever appeared on my recommended feed. What a fantastic video. I was a 10.9 handicap this time last year, I've struggled to get it down over the last 12 months I'm now 10.7 even though I've played so much golf. I've tried a million things to stop myself from pulling most of my shots left which i never used to do. I seem to be contacting the ball with a slightly closed club face which doesn't mix well with my natural draw and its been really getting me down. Definitely going to try some of your ideas and think the slowing it down will help. I'm going to do the free trial on your friends website. I'm now subscribed to your channel.
Great stuff mate, hope it helps you hit single figures!
Great to see you posting again Rob and some really useful drills. Good work.
Probably the most valuable channel on youtube to get better at golf 👍
Not sure about that mate but very kind!
Nice to see you back Rob, been a while.....keep up the golf content, a lot of people enjoy it and can relate with you. I'm a similar golfer currently of 4 but I feel your pain in trying to improve.
Cheers bud. Life's been busy but trying to get a video out every two weeks or so now.
Always great to see you pop up with another video Rob. Those videos with Liam were great, and the towel drill really helped and like you need to get back to doing them again!
Keep your eyes peeled for some Liam action soon mate! 👀
Great content! My favorite two drill are: setting up in impact position (as you assume it to be..) and hitting half shots just from there. Second: 3/4 swings with abbreviated follow through. Both drills dramatically improve impact, compression and are ideal, when you lose your swing for any reason. They fix it all. (10 hcp).
Great seeing you back making golf videos.
Cheers!
Glad you’re back Rob keep it up 🏌🏾
Thanks mate, it's good to be back
Thanks for the useful tips - the deliberate pause at the top of the backswing is money to train what I believe is the hardest part of the golf swing
will definitely try the ball flight grid next time I’m practicing 👍🏽
I really liked your video on your golf journey and rediscovering your love of the game after falling out of love with it- it helped reframe my own golfing journey and gain perspective!
Thanks mate, appreciate that!
Great video rob. Good to have you back.
Cheers bud, good to be back!
good stuff. nice to see you back on the course!
Well done Rob. Great Video. Practical tips that can be done when short of time with guaranteed results. Some tips do not appeal but what you have just shown is so simple and makes sense specially the single handed swing and its logical difference between young and later year golfers. Huge thanks.
The 9 to 3 drill with impact stickers or spray on my irons into a net. Stay wide, find the middle of the face. Plus read and practice Dan Grieve's 'The 3 Releases '. Putt every other night with putting Dotz on the face.
Welcome back Rob. I like to break my practice into sets of 20. 20 with wedges, 20 on technique, 20 on performance (like the 9 box grid stuff) then 20 with Driver. Stops me from machine gunning. If I’m pushed for time I have a shorter routine involving 3,6 and 9 feet putting hole 3 and move back. 5 chips and hole out from progressively harder positions. Then 30 on the range.
Like it mate. Anything that stops the classic machine gunning 7-irons is good news!
First time seeing your content and I must say I love your style of presentations. You have the vibe of a friendly, helpful friend at the range just wanna help another fellow golfer. I'll definitely give these drills a go, especially the pause at the top as I have a tendency to rush my transition. As for my favorite drill, I like Jchowgolf's drill where you take the club back just parallel to the ground, pause and try to hit it as hard as you can. A) It forces me to use my legs and hip to move the club. B) Doing it at slow tempo also teaches ball striking because the abbreviated take-back highlights what the hands are doing from the slot to impact.
That’s great to hear, thank you! 🙏
Rob is back!!
Great video - I love the suggestion that the equipment constraints of heavy clubs for kids forces them to use the bigger muscles to swing the club.
Using the constraint of a one arm swing activated in the same way.
Placing weight on the club would have a similar effect I imagine!
Great video!!
Great video 👏👏- I too have decided to get good at golf , I have a swing coach( PGA pro) and when they give me drills(homework) I actually do them and accept you have to get worse to get better - a swing change takes months and like you said with towel drill you don’t have to hit loads of ball - as per Pete cowen - focus on the movement to create your desired swing
Give it a go mate, get that single figures this year!
Superb content, love seeing progression and how it's being achieved
Great to hear!
The one handed drills are great! I will have to try with the towel or stick.
Naturally I find it easier to one hand swing my trailing arm than my leading arm. I will give it a go with the added towel and alignment stick to see if that helps. Thank you.
Rob great vid. Nice to see some new content from you. The alignment stick against the lead hip is hands down the BEST drill I've ever been shown. It drastically reduced my handicap last year and I warm up with it at every range session now. It's great for keeping the hands and arms connected and feeling like the swing is made from the core instead of the arms and hands. How hard is the Tiger stop at the top drill?? Many a driving range shank when I was first doing that one. Keep up the good work 🙌
good video Rob, stumbled across this and was excited to see you are doing this at Royal North Devon, my old course when i was a kid (now living in Australia)
Got to love a bit of RND!
Great content Rob. The hardest part of the game is closest to the hole for sure and where scores are made. I strike the ball just about as good as anyone I ever play with but get properly found out on and around the greens ☺️
Cheers mate. Short game counts a lot, for sure. Mine needs some work at the moment!
Good to see you back rob 👍🏻
Great tips Rob and good to have you back! 👍
Nice one Rob. I think I’m going to adopt the 1 arm swing in to my training this season. It makes complete sense what you said about your weak left arm. Thanks 👍
No probs, hope it helps!
Great video, been at a 12-13 for a few years now because I haven’t taken the time to work on exactly these types of drills
Just set up a hitting net in my garage, didn't know where to start with my practice sessions. Going to immediately try the one arm drill to add some much needed width to my swing. Appreciate the insight Rob!
Ah nice. No worries, hope it helps!
Glad to see your return to making content! 1st comment, more puppers in the intro. Saw him chilling in the back 🐕 As far as drills go, working on hitting a spot with the bottom of the club helped me & my daughter out when learning to use the bounce of the wedge for certain chip shots. Can be done on the carpet while watching videos. Yielded big results in only a few minutes a day being more consistent with the know with knowing where the bottom of our swings are. Great video!
Haha good spot!
Looking really well Rob great to see 👍 ive watched from the start the good and bad times, well done for getting to that handicap
Cheers bud, hope you’re doing well 😎
Thanks- this was really useful, particularly the one handed drill.
Great video mate. Good to see you back. And well done on the h/c!
Great stuff- I recently got pain in my right wrist kinda RSI- was at the same time I was working on better rotation and getting the left hip back at impact. As a result I needed to quieten my hands. Turns out that most of that was about stopping my right hand get dominant and the pain pushed me down that path. I now know what quiet hands feel like even if its a little bit by accident !
Great, now I've got to find a way to give myself a wrist injury! ;)
Big fan of the Tiger 9 shot drill. I do that at the driving range when I get there. Not always successful with all the shots but you improve your clubface control and learn about what shots you can take to the course and which ones you find more difficult. Also start all my practice sessions with 20 odd wedges to different targets/ distances. Been doing it for a few years and seen huge improvements in my wedge game. I don’t make any big changes to my swing now. Not got the time or the inclination. Would much rather find out what works best for me through hitting different ball flights and being creative.
Good tips. The trouble is all these drills are so boring I can never persevere with them - which is one of the reasons I am a useless golfer.
Good to have you back!
I know what you mean but doing random practice and never improving gets boring too, whereas actually getting better is fun!
@@RobMcGarr absolutely Rob. The truth is I have reached an age where I just play for fun and accept the bad shots readily. Luckily you have not and I am sure your best golfing days are still ahead of you
All the best.
Fantastic video Rob, one of your better one :)
Welcome back mate.
Great content mate and well presented. Glad I stumbled upon this video!
Cheers bud!
Rob! You’re back!
I’ve watched your swing for years now.
If there’s one thing I don’t see in your swing is that subtle move towards the target thus moving the low point of the swing so hitting ball then ground.
You always look like your timing is key to your swing rather than the mechanics. You’ve often mentioned the fat and thin shots- I think it’s because you try to remain very centered. But you do need just an inch of forward movement to get the club ahead of the ball at the bottom else you’re always going to cast at it right at the last minute.
Tell me to do one but I genuinely think it’s the only thing missing in your swing.
Watch this space mate... got some help coming soon which should sort that!
Watched you years ago. Boy have you improved!
Ha thanks, getting there slowly!
@@RobMcGarr Took me many years too but qualified as an EGTF coach in the end.
Ah Rob welcome back!
6.00 stick the alignment stick down the grip hole. Maybe find an older club that you're not worried about the grip hole getting a little bigger.
This drill is fixing so many bad habits of mine lately
always been a big fan mate. keep the videos up
Cheers bud. Hoping to get a video out every couple of weeks 🙏
Good to see you again. The one armed drills look good but I don't get the aim of the towel drill.
All explained much better here: th-cam.com/video/7AK5HJb5bmU/w-d-xo.html
great tips. I'm off to the range tomoz for the first time for a while, restricted to speed training in the garden for the winter. I'm going to give these drills a go!
Ooh let me know if the speed training has worked. Been considering it myself...
Worked well for me last season, put about 10 mph on my driver, so a 30 yard gain@@RobMcGarr
Interesting Rob. I’m currently at around a 10 handicap and desperately want to get down to around 5. I’m going to commit a bit more to practice in the coming months and will try out some of your recommendations, see how it goes 💪
Good stuff mate, hope it helps! 🙏
Spot on nice video rob
Can you go into more detail with the towel drill and what the reasons for it are and what the outcome your looking forward. Cheers mate, I’ve taken note of all of these they are gold
Have a look at this mate: th-cam.com/video/--bQcsZ2eRw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=x-ZaliCQXD4BgAbV Or tourgolfnetwork.com/
Great info and insight Rob, thank you.
The man is back!
Let's go!
For me: the one handed ones you showed - plus a bonus version of these where you throw a ball down the target line throwing it downwarda about a foot in front (really hard with the left hand).
The Tiger drill you showed.
The 'Jon Rahm drill' hold the club at parallel in backswing and try and hit a full shot.
The 'Justin Rose drill' - practice dropping the club behind you from top of backswing, with back to the target, do some pumps of this then rotate through.
Didn't really understand the towel drills otherwise great video!
Like it.
Yeah I didn't explain the towel drills brilliantly - Liam is your man for that!
Brilliant once again!!!
Excellent. Really enjoyed this
Some of the best drills I’ve seen! Will be watching more of your videos. Question. Can you use an impact bag instead of a towel, does it work in the same way? Does the club bounce off and pose a danger of hitting you?
Welcome aboard! You can indeed, in fact I think the drills were originally done with an impact bag. I think the towel provides a bit more feedback, which is why it's used in place of a smash bag, but either's good.
Love it! I have only done one handed putting and chipping, so will definitely give this a try!
Also … jazzy hair
You love chopping.
@@RobMcGarr everyone loves going for a chop and a putt?
He's back 👌
Great video mate. Keep doing them towel drills 👌
Cheers bud, that's the plan!
Great content Rob ! I'ill make sure to try these drills during my next session at the range. However, whil I found this very interesting, I'm not sure I understand the purpose of the towel drill. Could you please elaborate again ? Thanks in advance.
There's more about the drill here: th-cam.com/video/--bQcsZ2eRw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=FL12piTXltMpFkQr

Nice drills! Thanks for the video…subscriber in Nova Scotia..Cheers MikeR.
love the video, you definitely should have led with the comment about never doing it with anything above a PW, with the attention span of people nowadays im sure it could have been missed (i almost clicked off and started swinging with my 7)
We need to see you play 18 holes so you can prove your 2.9 handicap 😉 I also use the stick drill. Helps to compress the ball and avoid flipping. I think your swing looks better then before. Well done!
Ha that will be coming soon!
Love your content Rob
Thanks this content is really helpful
No probs!
Hi Rob - great video. One question though, on the towel drill I’m still not sure what good looks like? What should the end result be for a good “shot”?
Is the point of the towel to feel your impact position, or just to keep your club from not going 40 yards? Is the point of the drill to feel the throwing the club and make sure your "throwing it" the right way? Thanks! Big fan of all these, the towel one was the only one I haven't really done. Going to take the one armed swings and pause dirll more seriously. Always testing out the nine windows.
The towel drill is explained much better here: th-cam.com/video/7AK5HJb5bmU/w-d-xo.html Or check out Liam's website.
Going to try that pause at the top at the range I think!
Hope it helps!
@@RobMcGarr tried it at lunch time, feels very similar to when my swing gets too long and I have to reset it to a shorter swing to have more control over the transition. Very useful way of doing it!
So what's the perfect execution of the towel drill?
Here's the drill: th-cam.com/video/--bQcsZ2eRw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=IN32_kx_Jy_P3TuV
Here's the full lesson it's from: th-cam.com/video/7AK5HJb5bmU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=WNE55N1TbZytwi5t

Welcome back… looking like Pat Cummins doppelgänger!
Ha I get that a lot on here!
Good video and most useful
love it.
Is this your actual practice routine? If not, can you show your routine? I’m an 8 handicap. Trying to get to under 5.
Rob what is the towel drill trying to achieve? I've watched this a few times and you are passionate about it but I think I'm missing the point. Sorry and thanks saved this vid.
I didn't explain the towel drills very well. Have a watch here (th-cam.com/video/--bQcsZ2eRw/w-d-xo.html) or here for the full lesson: th-cam.com/video/7AK5HJb5bmU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=d8yA6b_wkpEndkzC
Or Liam's site is even better: tourgolfnetwork.com
I honestly think lots of practise at 100 yards-in would do the job. get good at that and I defy anyone to score badly
Preach 🙌
100 percent. All golfers that I’ve met who are single or better all have varying capabilities of short game within 100 and they are all good.
Tell that to my out of bounds tee balls…😅
@scottstorm7765 totally. I hate how so many people just say "work on 100 yards and in" it's not all about the short clubs - if you can't keep a ball in play it doesn't matter how good your wedges are.
I'm pretty good with my short clubs and I've scored badly many times with poor play off the tee
I really need to work on that pause drill at the top as I’ve gotten so quick in the transition. But I think it’s from lack of flexibility - after a hiatus from the game, my flexibility is shot.
The things that really helped me in improving my handicap were: 1. only work on one swing thought at a time and video almost every swing in practice while working on technique as feel is most of the time very far away from real. Otherwise you think you tried the swing thought and it seemed to not work, but video shows you were only thinking you did it. Real swing changes feel drastically different.
2. know your average distances for each club (where 4-6 of 10 balls end up) and don’t make a club choice on the basis on the one miracle shot you hit once with this club
3. know that most trouble is ahead of the green
4. most of the time aim for the middle of the green and thereby avoid big numbers on holes.
Solid advice!
Nice haircut. : )
OMG the 🐔 of gold?!?!?!?! What a crossover!!! Legend.
Wow... congrats on that handicap
Cheers mate, getting there slowly!
The best in the world work on the same things all the time, day after day... hackers like me try a different thing as soon as they hit one bad shot.
I've tried really hard through the winter to tell myself what I can do to play decent golf this year and I've been hitting it well off the mat. Hit a few balls on a soggy golf course last week and my confidence is shot to bits 😂
100% right mate, we all know it but so easy to fall into the trap of dancing around different things constantly.
Courses are unforgiving at the moment - my short game at the weekend was a car crash!
@@RobMcGarr I had my best improvement when I played lots of winter golf and didn't go to the range so much. You soon improve when you're trying to hit out of a bog!
Fantastic 😊😊
Thanks! 🙏
where was this filmed.. thought i recognised it....
Royal North Devon ⛳️
Where are you? Looks majestic.
On the range at Royal North Devon - on a nice day it is majestic!
What's the purpose of the towel drill?
Thats what I am always missing from coaches: do this 3 times, then that, then x.
There is usually no advise how you actually should practise, just for example "do one hand swings" and they show you how, but not down to the real practise. Thank you for this.
Yeah same! I’m almost asking for homework at the end of lessons!
@@RobMcGarr I even almoat started developing an app "golfDrills" which gives you those drills with targets, progress, competitions etc., but then didn't have the time needed to do it.
Still not in Norfolk then Rob?
No mate, Devon for now!
How i improved: Played virtual golf to learn my distance. You always have perfect alignment. Take a few lessons. Play lots. Done.
