Excellent drill. My issue has always been starting the downswing with my hands/arms, and this drill is by far the best way to give yourself the time to actually feel what is going on at transition. It allows you to focus on your weight shift/left hip going back as the start of the transition. video yourself on your phone for irrefutable video evidence! Thanks JC!
Mate, thanks so much for this. I had been going through the worst golf of my adult life for the past 4 months. Uncomfortable, hitting it horribly, and ripping the grip off it from the top. Watched this and my practice has consisted of nothing else since. Immediately got back to playing scratch golf after not being able to break 80 and considering giving the game up. Cheers, pal!
I started using this drill last week. It is amazing. I dropped my scores from 80 to 74. I am hoping to continue with this drill and drop my handicap to 0.
I've also found good rythm here and there over the years concentrating on a "pause" at the top. However, what I call pausing and what you might call pausing can be totally different. Also, what we both feel in that moment in time can be different, especially if the pause is brief. If you literally "stop" at the top, like Jonathan, is teaching in this drill, you can not find the middle of the club face w/o getting the downswing sequencing correct.
@jeffhowell4891 Yes, indeed, Jeff, there is a difference between pause and stop. My pause is hardly noticeable. In fact, I feel like I'm still moving. Not rushing the downswing is what's important.
I read that Vijay Singh has a slight pause at the top by thinking the word, "thirteen", but any two-syllable word would work I suppose. Quick anecdote: I was in the middle of my swing with a 3-iron (yes, this was a long time ago) and someone from an adjoining fairway yelled something to one of his playing partners. Instead of stopping, I paused enough at the top to mutter, "Ash hole", and hit the purest 3 iron I've ever hit.
This one is great. I've been doing it for some time now after watching someone on TH-cam do it. It helps me with my tempo, gives me a proper feeling of completing my backswing and stops me from initiating the downswing with just my arms and upper body ( which was causing a " hands swing " and arms racing ahead too fast).
Due to watching this from JChownGolf, I went to the range today and tried it. This is by far the best, most productive drill that I have ever done practicing golf. I saw positive results IMMEDIATELY. Thank you so much for posting this. The drill does wonders for early extension and the transition movements. Hit my wedge first for about 100 balls and then decided to give the 6i a go. A+++ difference in what I am feeling when starting the downswing.
It's unreal how this drill cures the "blur" of what is really happening in transition. You can NOT get the sequencing wrong after stopping at the top and hit a good shot. Right away, I could feel what I needed to do with my body at the all important moment in time that we call "transition". It took about 10 balls for me to find the middle of the club face (with a wedge) and after that, I was HOOKED. Swear, I am amazed! @@jchowngolf
I had 77 off the stick the other day in competition (par 70 home course). I find that transition is easier when i drink a six-pack of beer 🍻 during the round, also eliminates the "Heebie-Jeebies" from my putting! Hcp 13.
I think what pausing does is allow for a proper downswing sequence to take place, where your normal swing isn't properly timed, perhaps in initiating weight transfer
Worth watching video for sure. Not only is it a great case for doing this drill. All the other stuff was great about hard work and commitment and attacking/doubling down on the things you can’t do. Great stuff.
I can see where this drill would help me. I have a pretty quick transition and I'm sure that I don't make enough of a turn through the ball. This would give me time to start that turn before I start down with my hands.
But this is also a big insight into learning golf. Listen to what Butch say's when he say's it took the GOAT over a year hitting 1000s of balls. We armatures and coaches have to be realistic in our expectations.
It has for me. I wasn't getting a good weight shift, and it was causing me to steepen the club in the downswing. Since doing this drill, I've gained awareness of my lower body and, almost like magic, started to shallow the club beautifully, like I did when I was younger.
What I find with watching TH-cam videos is that the pros make the drills look so easy. So I go off to the range with so much optimism, hit 80% of my shots badly trying these new techniques, and then wonder why I play golf in the first place.
Work hard. Pays off almost every time. But you gotta know what to work on. And don't forget family and friends....they are the foundation. Because, essentially, imagine you're the last person on earth, and have stellar performance, what's it worth?
I've been doing this with my irons and seeing improvements, would this be viable to do with driver? I tend to get drag the handle down and get steep causing nasty heel strikes when swinging normally but I've never heard of anyone using this drill with driver
Self taught but ive always done this drill! dont know why but maybe its why ive got down to 5.0 hcp at 64,well that and swinging a yard of thick rope both work well together other benefit is that its saved the lives of a few butterflies!
If you think about arms during the downswing you will hit over the top most of the time. You need to focus on body rotation and weight shift to the left. The arms will follow the body and fall naturally to your right hip. You just can't think about arms during downswing. Same as baseball. You focus on weight lift. The body will speed up the arms, not the other way around
You know why this works? Waiting on the top gets you used to shallowing the shaft plane, so your hands can be "forward" but the club face is lagging behind. If you hold the Apex of the backswing, your wrist will naturally turn clockwise, shallowing the plane.

Spot on Jonathon. The "pause" has always been the most important part of my swing.

it was actually SEVENTEEN... i use it myself from Vijay
@@yudditennis Well no wonder I suck! I wasn't using enough syllables. 😄
Tiger had another type of drilling on his mind in that clip.
Mental rehearsals are importante also.
lmao
I can tell you how much better my ball striking has been since I started doing this. I’ve even been getting compliments at the range.

Thank you for your kind words Andrew. Absolutely, there’s a link to my online coaching in the video description. Cheers!
The pause is a key aspect to the swing. Most don't even think about this.
this is EXACTLY the area im STRUGGLING!!!!! matching shallowing the club with my rotation.. IM STRUGGLING. i'll try this drill..

Having a closed stance helped me gain distance and better ball striking as well.
I'll give this a go tonight. Thx Johnathon

Shanks! …I mean thanks 😮😊
My coach made me do this drill for quite long. I reached my top distances with Irons after this, 5 iron went 20,25 yard longer than before.
sounds like a great tip.
gonna try it.

Thanks for the tips mate

Absolutely, driver is the same 👍🏼
@@jchowngolf awesome, keen to put in some work 😁
absolutely. i love it for longer clubs. Where the release is really important for power and squaring the face

Whats the main benefit of this drill? Syncing body with arms? Hand path? Not flipping? Or all of the above.....
What is that net called and where can I get it?
Can this drill be used for all clubs, like woods and driver?

You got a good action. Keep up the good efforts.
Tee the ball up as if on a Par 3. That's how every amateur should try to do the drill.
That hitting platform does not look level. A testament to how much use it has gotten.
Use a rope training aid or an actual length of rope for swing drills. It becomes impossible to rush the swing from the top.
Thanks for sharing

I’ve been doing this since I saw this. Hitting it super pure. But I still can’t keep my hips from jumping up and getting steep!
Keep your back heel down until after impact as a drill, hips will stay back.
Has anyone try this drill with driver , wood & hybrid ?
And Haney messed it all up.
Haney was trash.
Haney couldn’t fix anyone in his stupid show either
Facts
Foley ruined Tiger's back and produced zero majors in their time together. I think Haney did just fine
Should I think starting my arms first on the downswing?
Yes, subconsciously when you make that decision your left leg starts to fire
No for most

what pro tournament did you play?
I’m a coach, But I previously did play uk mini tour golf, which was the Jamega tour that unfortunately shut down. I played from 2016
Some pros like Matsuyama have a pause at the top their regular backswing -- not just practice drill.
Just throw the hands and grip towards the ball
Not a fan, got a video coming out about this
