  • The drama of allowing old presuppositions die, and new ones emerge, was represented in heroic and shamanic initiations and then in drama and story long before it was rationally articulated by modern psychoanalysts and psychologists.

I wish my professors had this level of really deep internalized understanding of their fields, most of them are too full of themselves to realize that they're not truly as proficient as they think. The world genuinely needs more teachers and professors like this

Too achieve that goal I think education should give a lesser importance to marks and graduations, and rather encourages risk taking by letting you create your own knowledge in your own way on an invididual and autonomous long-term work-learning.
Most professors are boring because they consider being graduate as sufficient, which they were always being told when they were students. Having good marks or being deeply interested in knowledge isn't the same thing

Yeah, I noticed that too. Still though, it's too bad he doesn't have a clear clip explaining himself on the subject.. The clips where he states his rational are a bit hard to follow. Also he's attracted this hoard of sexist meat head fans, -but maybe a blessing if they end up actually watching his lectures the way through? It would be great to produce a clear clip stating his rational of systems and the particular issue + a shout out to females like- "I'm not saying y'all are chaotic it's like the metaphor for each of us etc". I wish he would go into more detail about the feminine side rather than the simplification "women know what to do/men need to be told". That's like.. a lot of pressure lol

The same thing happened to me at first as well. I think it's just that he's so compelling in his mannerisms that nothing else is that intriguing. The only other thing I had found interesting was Aion, which is basically as interesting as a book can be! I fucking love Nietzsche, he's so aggressive and based that absolutely nothing can survive his criticisms without needing and entirely new evaluation, plus, his insults are fucking hilarious.

You mention the experiment where people (volunteer psychophysics or neuroscience students, so no ethical issues!) bungee jumped to test their perceptions. They had watches which displayed flashing numbers at different frequencies and were supposed to test if they could actually see the sensory inputs at a faster rate. The key finding of the study was the opposite of what you mentioned. The falling students did not in fact operate at a faster rate than stationary students, even though they afterwards reported the feeling of time slowing down. This is an example which is now a staple of behavioural psycholology, where the memory of perception changes as a function of the context, but the real-time-reported experience does not. Just drawing your attention in case nitpickers nab you for this one. Otherwise, to me, all you say is true (in both senses you mention) ;) Very grateful for your doing this. journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0001295

At about 42:20 he explains why reading to people is so much less effective than talking to them, maintaining a rapport with them. I decided long ago that I could either read to people or talk to them and I decided to talk to them, from notes but extemporaneously. That way I did forget some things that I had intended to include but I also allowed myself to add in things that I hadn't prepared for. And I was able to connect with them.

    00:38:00
"For most people, if they don't have a substantial amount of external structure and routine, they just fall apart. They don't sleep properly, they don't eat properly, they're depressed. It's tremendously effortful to continually reinvent yourself day after day, so there's some real utility in routine and social identity. Jung would say that the part of you that has adapted to routine and social identity is the "persona", and sort of the mask you wear in public. It might even be who you think you are. And he thought that people who were only persona were dangerous, because they were thoughtless advocates of the system for which they stood. But he also believed that people who had no persona were in an equally terrible situation, because they're psychologically chaotic because they don't have the social structure around them to reign them in and continually remind them how to be sane and productive. So it's a matter of balance. There's horrors on both sides. And there's advantages on both sides. The trick is to place yourself in a location where you're deriving maximum advantage from both. And you'll be able to tell if you're doing that because, if you *are* doing that, you're going to find your life engaging and meaningful enough, so the fact that it's also tragic and potentially composed - at least partially - of slavery, is going to be acceptable. And that's the goal, in some sense. And it's hard to do that, but, you know, it's hard not to do it, too, so, you're screwed either way. So you might as well pick the path that's going to be of maximal utility to you, and hopefully to everyone else."

44:30. I'm Filipino. In my childhood during the early 90s, I remember my father (and probably other adults around me) using the word "flip" (pronounced more like "plip") as an insult, implying that someone is crazy or "cuckoo" - suggesting their brain or thinking is "flipped". As an adult, I no longer hear it. However, I have been living separately from my parents since I went to uni, so I'm not sure if he still uses it.
The term likely originated during the US colonial period in the Philippines (1900s to 1940s). That was a long time ago, and I don't think the original pejorative meaning is still part of our national consciousness.

PTSD is also caused by sexual assault, stalking and bullying to a victim. The victim gets blamed many times because the predator needs a scapegoat because they are wrong in behavior which they know but will not admit. I reject married men who advance on me and I despise men who lie.

I 100% agree with challenging stupid nonsense in a corporate environment, I've found that if you're able to elaborate your argument logically without emotion (which is harder than it seems because some of the shit is absolutely infuriating) then people will tend to agree and respect you for speaking up. And yes, the earlier the better because once the hamster wheel gets rolling then it's harder to stop. Do you think this is something people can learn to do? I'm not the type of person that fears confrontation, it seems like others reeeeeaally get freaked out by any sign of disagreement.

I am one of those people, I absolutely hate confrontation, especially with an authoritative figure. I've been trying to figure it out, and for a while I thought that it may be linked to my father's parenting techniques, but I have never made progress in finding that answer. It's definitely a fear. A fear of what is the answer.
