The Original Fujifilm X100 in 2022 - Street Photography

  • The X100V is my favourite camera for street photography. In this video, I decided to ask the question, what it would be like to shoot street photography with the original X100.
    Discovering its limitations but also the wonder and joy of this camera.
    Street photography images shot on the original X100. All film footage was captured on XT3. All images are edited in Adobe Lightroom CC.

    I have the original X100 (bought new) and the X100V. While the V is a superior camera in many ways, I think I get more fun and satisfaction from the original X100. And (surprise, surprise), there are a number of other 10 year old cameras that are still pretty good. Just because it's old, doesn't mean it's bad.

    • @LifeWorkDreams
      @LifeWorkDreams  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So true Norm, I found my experience with the x100 to be great and lovely to see what an older camera can still do... It was an eye opening experience and like you say the last few times I've been out to shoot it's now a tough call on which one I bring with me 🙂

      @@LifeWorkDreams Rich, Thanks for your reply. Check your X100 has the latest firmware update (version 2.11) makes it quicker and more responsive. I also run my X100's on the lowest dynamic range (100%), seems to enhance the "film - like" look. Thanks for the videos.

    • @marcp.1752

      Just because it's old - doesn't mean it's being obsolete, that's it. Gear lust is really a bad thing, people always want better, faster AF, more MP, better video specs, etc..most of all, it doesn't really count. Look at the great old masters of photography - they had inferior tech compared to nowadays, and created such masterpieces of art - everyone could just think a moment about it. ;-)

      Hi, hope u can help me. I bought a x100 used and I noticed that the Manual focus Ring does a clicking/knocking noise everytime you turn it and reach a different focus point. Is this normal?

    • @normm7764
      @normm7764 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@analogchemische Quite normal. In a quiet room, you can hear the lens chattering away in MF as you turn the focus ring. The focus ring should turn freely in both directions - it has some resistance, but not much. If the lens is sharp in AFS (makes occasional noise there too), I think all is ok. The camera is so much better to use with the firmware update (see my post above). To check the version, hold down the DISP BACK button and turn the camera on, in that order. The version installed appears on the back screen. Also, only use a filter with the adaptor ring. Have Fun.

    I love my X100V (like everyone else)... but... I have my late dad's OG X100 in black paint (evidently a limited edition). I will sell the X100V some day for a Mark R or whatever letter is next, but my dad's OG X100 stays.
    So yeah, I have my old man's camera set up in Monochrome (+1 shadows/highlights), a 20% cinebloom filter, pretty much in f/2 or f/8 most of the time, no screen or EVF, just OVF and I pretend it's a Monochrom =) Part of me feels the connection to my dad when I use it... my daughter tends to use it more than me. Long as she doesn't lose it, fine by me.
    The OG X100... is a fussy camera. Sometimes it'll drive you nuts, a complicated camera. Not unlike my dad, but charming too. And just like him; the sum is greater than any individual part. In a way the X100V won't be.

    Love the love for the og X100! This is the camera that made me fall in love with photography all over again. I'd never splurged on a camera before but I just fell in love with it so I had to have it. And it was my go-to camera when I was traveling even though I was lugging around a DSLR as well, I always found myself reaching for this instead. I sold it a few years ago but man, I had some good times with it and have such fond memories. Was it a bit janky? Sure. Terrible battery life, yes, but nonetheless absolutely loved it once I learned its quirks. I have a X-T3 now and although I absolutely love it, I'm still kind of missing the X100 series.

      "I have an X-E1 with the same sensor." Please do your homework, before posting. :-) The X100 (2011, prototypes shown at the german Photokina 2010) had a 12 MP APS-C Sensor (Sony) which is literally the same, as into the 2008 released Nikon D90.
      Second, the X-E1 which i just use right from the start (own the silver & black bodies) does use a 16 MP X-Trans I Sensor. X-Trans is different from an ordinary Bayer CFA, and best being used with Iridient (Developer, X-Transformer), Capture One, or Photo Ninja as RAW Developer, or the free RAW Therapee.

      @@marcp.1752 Apologies. You are correct. My mistake.
      The X-E1 has the same X-Trans sensor as the X-Pro 1. But the original X100 has a different sensor.

    we've been using the x100 professionally since its release. it remains a very capable camera once you become familiar with its quirks. when it was released, very few considered using the back lcd to compose images; SLRs were still mainstream and using the OVF was the way to go. i still find that the camera works best in manual focus mode with the OVF and using the AF button to lock focus once you've punched in with the magnifier. that way, the EVF is only used to confirm focus. our x100 finally took a fatal hit to its rear LCD this year during a shoot and it looks like we'll be retiring it.

    I sell film cameras for a living. As much as I love it and am blessed to be surrounded by lots of beautiful and sought after cameras, I have to admit, the process of developing and scanning my film really is a tedious issue for myself, especially when I'm busy. I have a handful of nice film cameras I still use regularly, but most of the time if I want the convenience of both time and portability my trusty, original X100 is with me. It really takes no effort to get the images to match my film work and the form factor is a blessing. I'm sure the later models produce "better" photos, but there's something about it that keeps bringing me back over my other cameras, film or digital.

    I bought my X100 the moment it was released. It got the aperture replaced (because of the sticky aperture issue), and sent it away a couple of times to have it cleaned and serviced. I still use it, even while I have a Z6 and other camera's. Have you tried using the X100V the way you used the original X100? And what are your experiences and differences from the V to the original, or are there things like image output quality that only work on the X100 and not the 'V'? In my mind you should be able to use the 'V' the same way as the original.

    As a Leica M shooter for decades, I was first in line to buy the original X100 when it was released based on the images of it in the still valid monthly photography magazines from that time.
    My experience was not positive. The first thing was the shockingly fast to die battery. I could take my Nikon DSLR out with a half charged battery and take hundreds of images. I never got more that 100 shots from the Fuji with a fully charged battery. It would often go completely dead with little to no transition on the indicator. Next the autofocus was deadly slow for any dynamic scene. I had to go manual focus and use a moderate aperture to set a zone via the scale in the finder. The problem with that is that the action of just walking around would cause my set focus to "drift" so it may not be where it was 10 minutes ago.
    I still have my X100, and for a while I'd take it out from time to time to see if I may have misjudged it, but no. It caused me great frustration. I could shoot faster and more confident with my manual Leica M, setting everything manually.
    Luckily, after a break I gave Fujifilm another chance. The newer models are all majorly better for my use. I have the larger X-T class bodies, but for my compact EDC street camera I went with the X-E series with both an older X-E2s and an X-E3 doing what I had hoped the X100 could have done. Like you said in your video, my X-E2s gives me the film-like look that I like, but with more usability in terms of speed.
    This is all just my opinion. I'm glad you like your X100.

      Hi, hope anyone can help me. I bought a x100 used and I noticed that the Manual focus Ring does a clicking/knocking noise everytime you turn it and reach a different focus point. Is this normal?

    I owned an x100 when it was first released, and whilst the images were (astonishingly) impressive the quirks made it annoying - interesting that it forced ( and benefitted) you to slow down your shooting process.

    I bought this camera when it first came out. It came with me wherever I went. It has travelled with me to the US (2x times), Hong Kong and China, Israel and the West Bank, Prague etc. I recently sold it to a student that wanted a small travel camera. I see now I sold it very, very cheap, but it went to a good owner. I miss it now, but what can you do?

    I have the original X100 (well, limited Black Edition) without the SAB (sticky aperture blade) issue, and whileas of course the 2020 X100V is the best iteration of the X100 series yet, i still love my old, sometimes a bit quirky X100....it's like an old whine...it get's better over the years....i'm not selling it.

      @@marcp.1752 Thanks! I think those clicking sounds when on/off or obturating are normal! But for me its weird that everytime I reach a new focus point using the manual focus ring there is an internal sound. It's like if the AF motor was still engaged when using MF or something. It doesn't seem something by design since I haven't find nobody talking about this (tick every time u change the focus point manually) nowhere..

    To get a more _Film-esque_ subtle look, one could buy the (cheap, but fine) 7Artisans black mist 1/8 strength filter, it would add a layer of hallation and diffusion with light sources rendering onto the pictures, for a fragment cost of the Tiffen pro mist filters. And no, iam into no ways attached to 7Artisans, i've just bought the 67mm black mist for my ordinary, old Nikkor zoom, and would add this to my X100, too. Because i love to shoot film, and that specific look with various Film emulsions, like Tri-X, XP2 Super, Acros, Pro Image, Ektar, etc.

    4:41 and again FILM is FILM, digital is digital. Why people 'keep saying I miss film'. then just go do it. I have the Leica m3 and I develop all my b/w film in my bathroom. If you want film just do film, and if you want digital, then make it worth it. don't need to be so sensational?
