My first day in my first allotment - Winter sun & attacking some weeds, oh and tea!

  • My first day working on my first allotment!
Today, I work in beautiful sunshine, much different to back home. Attacking weeds, creeping buttercup, ragwort seedlings and more. Setting up my compost bin and enjoying a cup of tea.
Apologies for novice mistakes - I need to find better audio set up away from camera and also in the shed.
Alongside a shady veg plot in my back garden, my growing is extended to include plot A1 is a micro plot of 10 x 8 feet (2 x 2.5m ) within a community garden centered around biodiversity, growing spaces include my micro bed, use of poly tunnel and greenhouse.
Thanks so much for watching and supporting me. I really appreciate it.
If you enjoyed my video, please subscribe to be kept up to date with more.
    Take care, Jane
I garden on a budget and although we don't have gardening zones in the UK, we do class as 7b, with a temperate climate of heavy rainfall. I live by the sea, so my front garden is elevated with SW sea facing ,this leads to a lot of rain and high winds, then baking sun in the summer. I also have a heavily shaded back garden, it's not unusual for our back garden to be 2/3rds frozen even in mid day mild frosts. Add that to clay based soil and run off rain from the hillside and farm behind us, it's a challenging space for veg.

Aww I can't imagine. Despite my family being highlanders, Scotland was snowy enough for me to leave. 😜 I am lucky here, as less snow on the coast. But really had to chuckle at monty. 😂 I swear he's more famous across the world than here.

Honestly, I'd bag up all those weeds and take them to the tip. If your compost pile doesn't get hot enough, the seeds or roots themselves can survive and you end up spreading weeds whenever you use the compost. As a rule, I never put any weeds in the compost. When I first got my plot, I used compost from a pile I inherited and went from no bindweed to being infested with the stuff.

I would maybe pop the compost bin on the corner of your bed. You said its not staying as takes too much space, but think of the pay off - you'll get free compost for the bed... I think in the corner, might be better. Also, you got to think about access. Once that beds full of crops, you might not be able to get to it that easily if its in centre... Just a suggestion. Love that space. You've done well. Excited to follow to see what happens over the season

That's a great idea about the compost bin. I will see how much effort it is to move it now as its half full. I have manure to add and mix in with some shredded cardboard to keep it better. I have a wormery at home. So share the odd video on that.

@@Sezicoolcat2 I can unfortunately relate regarding a neighbour. I've been here for 17 years but have had issues for around 15 of them. Sadly it came to us building a fence last year. It keeps my dogs away but it's lead to me feeling really anxious. My channel here is to help me make myself accountable and face up to those feelings. It's really hard. But I'm not willing to lose another summer. I'm taking steps to use the section we fenced off as a kitchen garden. But when I was offered the mini allotment /community garden I jumped at the chance.

Hi Jane your shed is ace, nice compost bin too. You could use the manure as a mulch and let the rest of winter break it down, it should be ok for spring. Ive mulched my garlic with manure but i read a comment in another video saying garlic doesn't like manure but mine seem to like it.🤠👍🙏👌

    • @GardenMyselfHappy

Thanks Nick. I had read a few root veg don't like it as causes forking. I need to build up the level but the site may have compost coming too. So fingers crossed. As that'll really finish off my bed. If not I'll be buying compost to add.
I'll definitely do half manure though. I need to plan my square foot gardening element.
I got my final seeds through today. And have onions and runner beans to get up there. The poly tunnel was covered today too. So I have space to get some seeds planted.

    • @GardenMyselfHappy
      @GardenMyselfHappy  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hi Stella, I have seen wormeries set up by sinking a bucket with lots of holes drilled in it, then placing some manure and kitchen scraps or garden waste, shredded paper or cardboard. Like my wormery tower but in situ. So i'm thinking this will be the same. As it's such a tiny bed, it's a bit of a loss of space, but useful all the same. Others have them in the centre too and they looked like bee hives when I saw them from afar, I got quite excited.

I really appreciate the advice. Sadly I can't get a full size allotment, there are people 7 years into waiting etc. So this is a small community garden bed. But the project is a lot bigger.
I am lucky to have a good size garden, but it had limitations for veg growing. So a small section is becoming a more concentrated veg plot / garden.
