Yes, I have wood tec for bugs and will ensure we keep up on the varnish. Thinking about trying stain instead of varnish. Might do a test area in the back stain would last longer.

Hi Wilma & Greg, I enjoyed watching this video a couple of weeks ago and coming along on your Kubo shopping spree. I completely agree with you. The 6-sided Kubo was bigger and roomier, but like you I didn’t like the support posts being in the way. I was surprised as you say they were all basically the same. I agree with you on negotiating. The sellers know the buyers will want to negotiate a discounted price, so they set the price initially higher and eventually sell them for what they had planned on (30,000 pesos). There are many ways to look at the price. I often consider what my time is worth and how much it would cost me to build in terms of material cost and labour. When building your first one, it will naturally take a long time. If you get at least 5 years use out if it, the price is reasonable I think. The lattice is the best for air flow. Enjoy!

I built a similar, simple bamboo hut with bamboo-lattice roof to sit under for sun protection. I collected the bamboo myself from the forest beside my house. I’ll admit, mine was not as nice as these. I did tie each corner of the roof to nearby trees to hold it down during typhoons. The ropes kept it in place!

Hello again. I’m planning my move to the PHs now. I have no set date yet, but my expectation is Spring or Summer of 2024 if all goes well. I wish to rent land in advance of my arrival, then either bring a tent or just sleep under the stars for 2-3 nights while waiting for my Kubo to be delivered. I was shopping for tents today. I discovered, a similar-sized, high-quality tent (or 25% smaller) is the same price as either the standard Kubo or even the Kubo with enclosed room. The bonus with the Kubo is I don’t have to take it on the plane, pay a hefty price for shipping + transport it all the way to Negros Oriental 😆. Also I expect the roof on the Kubo will be more water proof. Did you ever ask the price to replace the roof after 5-6 years? How confident are you the Kubo will last more than 5-6 years?

I just stopped at a Kubo building place on the bypass road in Sorsogon City. Normally I would send my wife only but I got out of the car. The price of a 6 foot by six foot Kubo…… 55,000 pesos. Trying it on with a foreigner is alive and well.

Lol, you definitely got the foreigner price. Just part of the culture here, not all, but most. Funny story to tell. Should have videoed it, it might go viral.

We already know the prices before we started. That's why I go with Wilma. We have fun with the sales people when they raise the price, when we already know the price. It's part of the fun.

The reason to pay the right price is to be fair. These people are just surviving. I did not cut their price which i thought was fair & also i have feelings.

I just your saying I don't have feelings? Amazing.

No . my feeling is the money means more to them than it does to me
It's just a different way of looking at things

It's definitely nice to have discretionary money to spend. Wilma and I have limited funds. By the way the owner has a 2.4 million Ford Raptor.

It’s normal and acceptable to negotiate prices in the Philippines, it’s not being cheap or unfair….. worst thing the business owners can say is “no”. You’ll be surprised to know too that many business owners are well to do. I recently ordered made-to-order beds and I forgot to ask for a discount and they offered it to me anyway.

I agree Mannette, many shop owners are quite well to do. Overpaying is just foolish, but if that makes the above commenter feel good, then more power to him/her.

And like Greg said, why waste retirement dollars if you don't have to. Lord knows you pay enough skin tax on everything else. Good for yous guys.

Agree 100%, always makes me laugh when people say, "why do you ask for a discount the people there are so poor" meanwhile the owner pulls in with a Ford Raptor.

The problem is, the mesh is very, very unattractive. It destroys the natural look of the thatch. I would just as soon replace it with metal then to have that ugly mesh.
