My brother always spent every penny he made, swam in debt and had nice things. I always lived within our means, had all the things we needed. I retired early at 59 and only need about 20% of my retirement income(s) and have travelled all around the world. He's worked until 65, is at least ten years in debt and needing to live on food stamps . Stick to the plan, man. Your future self with thank you.

No advocating it but some people don’t feel like living a frugal life for ballpark 35-45 years is worth an unknown number of years of relaxation is worth it. They walk thru life with the “I can’t take it with me when I die” philosophy so they spend as they earn.

I had a roommate who was a car salesman. It definitely gave him perspective on the false-correlation between people's vehicles/appearance and their wealth. He used to tell me to look for the guys that drive into the lot with 20 year old Subaru or Honda, their the ones that are about to buy 15 work trucks in cash. The person driving the newer BMW is probably upside down on their loan and overly-leveraged.

Experts said a long time ago that people with the same interests have long-term relationships, or maybe they should have some stuff in common, which is logical.
Sam Vaknin said the best advice about falling in love.
Make sure that you didn't fall in love with the feeling of falling in love.
You either fall in love with a person, or you fall in love with the feeling of falling in love. It's a big difference.
Because just because you like someone doesn't mean he or she is right for you, with their values. He says some people with some narcissistic attitudes fall in love only for the feeling of falling in love, with the honeymoon effect, but when they have to show some respect and fulfill some needs of the other person, give emotional support, they want to break up and they will find another person....So it means they did not fall in love with you they only fall in love with the feeling of falling in love, but without giving some true interest in his needs and your needs.
But I wonder maybe the same way they treat themselves. Maybe they don't fulfill their own mental needs so they can not fulfill also the needs of partners.
Dr. Joe Dispenza said that people confuse self-love with self-pleasure. Self-love is not about buying expensive stuff or eating cakes every day, but about getting the most important stuff, dignity self-respect, self-love...then the person may give the same to others, give them respect empathy, inspiration etc.
You don't need a high level of dopamine from all stuff you buy or from playing videogames... but you need pleasure chemical as serotonin, melatonin, oxytocin.., these chemicals are released in your brain when you feel love empathy, or when you have proper sleep, exercise, etc.

It can be tough when you are living within your means, while others are "living it up". They all seem to be living such wonderful lives! But, I can guarantee you that if you look behind the curtain all is not well. As a matter of fact, it's a nightmare. The fights over money. The worrying about what happens if you lose your job. The realization that without that job, your cars and your home are gone within a month. Your kids are on the street. The stress of constantly being on that treadmill, with no relief ever! Just keep running and running, no matter how old you get. It's not a place you want to be. And it will destroy your health as well. I've seen it with folks who live paycheck to paycheck. It catches up with you.

No need to look behind anyone elses curtain to feel better about yourself. If you happiness is dependent on the problem of people who have more than you......you are in bad shape. The caller should live like he wants to live, so that he will only be happy seeing others live how they want!
