Dr Pancake Face Gaming because the modern runs are all asphalt no big rocks in the road to give real perspective of the speeds also all the giant rooster tails of dirt and dust behind looks so much more dramatic I've been to the paved races and trust me they are in no way slower yes it's lost some mystique by losing the dirt but I had a lot of old timers tell stories of how terrible the dust and dirt used to be now it is much nicer for the spectators if only they would modernize the spectator areas where they could broadcast the entire runs on big portable projectors instead of just a simple radio broadcast it would make for an amazing overall experience
i like what they did with wrc in this season by putting on board cameras in every car sending live video,it is amazing way to follow race.same thing in pikes peak and spectators could watch every run live.i think it would make this type of racing more popular, send broadcast live from internet and people around the world could follow the race, they could brobably make some more money that way.pikes peak is really famous race i would watch it if possible.greetings from finland

I saw this movie 17 years ago but it still knocks my legs off
WHAT A FANTASTIC FILM OF A MAN AND HIS MACHINE .THE BEST
What an exhilarating drive. Ari, it was a pleasure to meet you today.
Why does this seem a thousand times faster than modern pikes peak runs?
In terms of the car's speed or the time of the run? The other replies have covered the apparent speed of the car but the run seems short because the film only shows about half of the run. Vatanen's time was 10m47s but this whole video is only 5m18s.
Dr Pancake Face Gaming imagine having one long guardrail with a camera attached to it that follows the car for the duration of the entire run
beeble2003 - that time is fantastic considering it’s a dirt road- truly stunning talent
Très impressionnant....😮
Man alive. Check out 3.05 and 3.40 among many other highlights. love how he provides his own sun visor with his arm at one point
Just a shame it wasn't the complete run start - to - finish.
You slip over the edge, and after a few minutes you reach the starting point to try again. Now seriously, this is unparalelled driving skill.
3:26-3:30 Balls and Hands!!
I believe he's indicating that he doesn't actually need anyone to hold his beer while he does this.
Also Badass Ari Vatanen, finnish rallycross driver in 1988 when it was gravel.
The greatest single piece of driving of all time ! Full stop !
Have sat with people of this standard and just enjoyed!!!
Had a few wonderful rides as a passenger or Co- Pilot.
Although have a few Cups and Medals myself for driving could never have achieved this level.
Ari Vatenen got me some special bits for my Saab 96 V4 rally car many years ago.
Still have a rally car in the garage 1964 Saab 96 2 stroke fully prepared to FIA appendix K
At 72 years of age mad!!!!
Not long ago got rid of my Ducati 916 170 mph bike as the roads are getting too dangerous!!
Had a UR Quattro too and a Mazda 323 Turbo group N rally car!!! Those were the days.
Still no points on my license and still have little regard to stupid speed limits.
Ari driving Black Escort with BDX engine,
from ditch to ditch but still to be leading.
He was one of the first who drove at the limit, and teached Colin.
who's here 2023 💥
💪
2024 !!!
Im here 2024❤
2024, again
Ari Vatanen a legend!crashed a 205 and nearly died.Came back faster, harder, stronger.Thats why he is a hero in my book.
My hero as well along Ayrton Senna. I wanted him to win the 5th Dakar rally and another WRC rally after comeback.
Tuvo un terrible accidente con su Peugeot 205 en el Rally de Argentina, en la provincia de Cordoba, en el año 1983, creo ,
Fue terrible !
Pero se repuso y vovio, por suerte !!
A textbook example of the 80/20 rule: 80% of the car's power is used to carry that 20 ton balls.
In the first time i watched,i thinked this video is fake, for now i know this is real, awesome and insane
Absolut geil. Vatanen und Röhrl - war eine Wahnsinns-Zeit damals. ❤
This is Pure driving and courageus its Piks o ONLY for the bests without electronics thanks Ary you a true master from Carlos Portugal
The thrilling i have watching this video over and over never gets old. Legendary driver in a legendary car
1:05 already getting a thumbs up from me...3:17 - 3:22 got a little butterfly in my stomach. this guy was going hell for leather man.
2:51 this shot was brilliant.
Back in the day, we had a Peugeot 405 GTI and I would launch at the green light like this and then realize I would never be as cool as Ari blasting away up Pikes Peak in his Pe T16. Today I still feel like that.
Some of those powerslides towards unprotected cliff edges are simply breathtaking! Sheer balls of steel.
Ari Vartenan at his absolute best...Thats Drivin....legendary run
Finest piece of motor sport footage ever!End of discussion!
yep i agree with you david on that statement
I've never thought that anyone could drive better
then this, Ari Vatanen's assault at pikes Peak.
C'est magnifique !
Merci pour la vidéo !
how great, to stumble on this thisafternoon ! I so clearly remember when i watched this at that time.., and felt the same way right then :-)
By far Peugeot is the most successful manufacturer in motorsports winning among other Titles:- Le Mans 24 hour race-1992, The Paris Dakar-1987, Pikes peak-2013, WRC-1985,1986
This reminds me of when dad used to drive me home from school
VicariousReality7 haha 😆
My Chemistry teacher took me for a blast in his Quattro once - not a full group B spec, but one of the homologation road cars required to for the regulations. It was something else!
Grande Ari vatanen.
Jesus take the wheel!
Ari: OK
More like: Ari: Better you don't.
This is art. Literally.
HOLY SHIT! I'D BE PISSING MYSELF IF I WAS IN THAT CAR...
SUCH BALLS OF STEEL
I've seen this 100 times, but clicked through just to give it a thumbs up!
Sixteen years after beating V-Rally 2 the memories brought me here.
I never skip this intro 😎
2019.... And still amazed by his skills...
This was the real Pikes Peak track
These days setting sub 8 minutes time on a black top road is on a whole different level
12 years later Per Eklund 50+ years old and smasht Pikes Peak in a saab that hi and some freinds build in 3 month. Nordic drivers.....from the group B Years
Finnish Ari Vatanen won the rally world championship in 1981. He was severely injured at the Argentina rally 1985.
1987 he won the 12 000km Paris-Dakar rally. France gave the finn french citizeship because of all his work for french auto industry. Vatanen never asked for it.
Later on, Vatanen was also involved in french and EU politics.
There is a before and an after by watching this legendary climb.
When men were men
and women were glad of it.
Last time I checked, pulling out "when men were men" rhetoric on a youtube video showing a guy driving a car up a hill was never a virtue of "real men." You guys say women whine about things but Jesus Christ look at you. Suck it up and come back to 2017 for crying out loud.
lmfao must have really rustled your jimmies when Michele Mouton won Pikes' Peak twice in a row
lol
*and when a woman embarrassed the men with the biggest balls. Yes, Walter Rohrl the greatest rally driver felt dishonored when he lost to Michele Mouton.
Look at all the bitter soyboys denying the obvious. What is there to preach here? Fuck off
Real men ran Pikes Peak on dirt.
For me from a driving perspective, the most exciting moment is at 3:10 with that fast right left sequence with the back stepping and making corrections with the rear wheels turning opposite. André de Cortanze's baby going wild...
Magnifique😇👍👍👍
