      Well screens have got bigger (and higher refresh rates) and apps start to suck more power... This is a small battery even by 2016 standards and my standard Galaxy S7 lasts better than this if it has a new battery

      Agreed. I don't get why they seem to think having such poor battery life is acceptable. And it's not the first time it's happened either. If you use the phone for a year or two (which shouldn't be unexpected) the battery's only going to be even worse.

    • @elimalinsky7069

      I can give 15 reasons why this phone isn't worth your money:
      1. Small battery.
      2. No notch, but enornouse top and bottom bezels (1st gen minimal-bezel phones like the Galaxy S8 and LG G6 had smaller bezels).
      3. No headphone jack.
      4. No USB headphones in the box.
      5. 18W fast charging isn't that fast anymore.
      6. No secure biometrics.
      7. 64GB and 128GB options? What is this, 2017?!
      8. 6GB RAM is technically enough, but behind the competition.
      9. No newer SD 855+ SoC.
      10. back panel design copied from Apple.
      11. 5.7" in 19:9 ratio is way too small and 6.3" isn't that big either nowadays.
      12. Only two color options, and another limited edition one.
      13. The radar thingy is a needless gimmick, which bumps the price of the device for no reason.
      14. No microSD expansion, which is disappointing given how even the 128GB on-board option isn't enough these days.
      15. No reverse wireless charging.

    I am more then fine with the forehead of the pixel 4. however some things like 64gb with ufs 2.1... a small battery... it makes it really hard... also not full quality on drive for pictures and only for 3 months... so why is that even a thing? And a wide angle.... If you only have 2 sensors... then a wide angle is a must!

      Agreed. If they had upped the storage, upped the battery, upped the Google services, and have a wide angle, I would have called this Googles redemption phone, worthy of being an alternative to the iPhones and Galaxies and Mates of the world. But in its current state? Nah, not at all. Cameras are good, but not blowing away the competition, in fact losing in a lot of ways. Software support is great, but others are better or match it. I just don’t understand why Google can’t make a flagship the right way.

    [COMMENT FROM GOOGLE] Hey folks. Google got back to me with comment concerning some of the shortcomings I noted above. Here's the company's feedback (and my responses, where applicable):
    [AUTOFOCUS ON SELFIE] "We made a number of changes to the front-facing cameras in Pixel 4 compared to Pixel 3. For example, because of the success of Pixel 3’s Group Selfie Cam, Pixel 4’s single front-facing Camera is a Group Selfie Cam. Compared to Pixel 3’s narrow default Camera, Pixel 4’s Group Selfie Cam has larger pixels with better dynamic range, and it also uses a fixed-focus lens. Fixed-focus lenses actually have some noticeable advantages over variable-focus ones -- for example, they have less natural bokeh, which makes it easier to get sharp-looking backgrounds as well as faces, and they’re always well-focused even in low light." (MrMobile: fair, but I'd have preferred the autofocus and the 97-degree option, which makes for a more versatile vlogging experience)
    [BATTERY] "We recognize how important battery life is for users, and we work really hard to balance battery size and device dimensions, with new, helpful experiences for users. Pixel 4 is our most ambitious design yet. To maintain a great fit-in-hand, we shrunk the battery slightly from the prior Pixel 3 device. We then leaned more heavily on software to deliver all-day battery, and designed features accordingly." (MrMobile: I think we see how this worked out in the end.)
    [LACK OF 4K60] "Pixel 4 supports 4k video recording on the rear can at 30 frames per second. We find that the overwhelming majority of users stick with 1080p, so we focus our energy on improving our quality in this mode versus enabling a 4k60fps mode that could use up to half a gigabyte of storage every minute." (MrMobile: the obvious counterpoint is that the phone should have *much* more onboard storage at this price point anyway.
    Thanks to Google for the comment!

      Yo Daddy It took the iphone 1-2 years for most apps to get the Face-ID login. It is great now as all my apps work well, instantly. But knowing Android it will take longer, though hopefully Google will have thought of that with Android 10?

    • @pishia1104
      @pishia1104 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@andyH_England The thing is that the Pixel is nowhere near as popular as the iPhone, and since the iPhone is the only option in the iOS world, app developers don't have much of a choice. Well developers waste their time adding this to a poor selling phone?

    • @andyH_England
      @andyH_England 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Pishi A Quite, and that is why Huawei, for instance in the Mate 30P , has both. You need a transition period. Apple were confident they could get developers/apps to move relatively quickly and mostly they did. However, in Android world with the fractured state, much like Windows, they make it harder for developers, again an example is that Apple have now killed the obsolete 32 bit apps.
      There are advantages with a forward thinking business like Apple. Certain people rail against tech moving on but so far Apple have been mostly right in their picture of the future. Android trying to please everyone inevitably means that although they have open source and variety they are slower with software related continuity.

      They must have known this while the phone was in development. Why on earth would they put out a phone knowing it would be underpowered against the competition? Had they made it 2mm thicker, they could have had a 20% bigger battery and crushed it.

    • @marcochavanne
      @marcochavanne 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Rickbearcat yep. Trying to dance on the edge of engineered obsolescence. If it already has a small battery, it will deteriorate over time and by the time the next gen phone is out, the new one will be an easy sell. At least in theory.
      But they should have learned from the Pixel 3. Battery life was the number one gripe of consumers and reviewers.
      They are going to destroy their phone brand by trying to be like Apple. You can't charge a premium price for sub-spec phones without delivering some kind of value or useful features.

      Also I personally couldn't see the average consumer not having the option of using an power outlet for that period of time. Those dudes test the phone because it is brand new, meaning they are playing with features, using stuff other people wouldn't normally do, or at least not over an extended period of time, in the end resulting in a basic battery life. Not defending google here, more battery is always good, but all I'm saying is I personally don't think the battery is that big of a deal in the modern age, the Ram and storage options are more problematic in my opinion.

    I think this phone is perfect as a secondary device you may want to use purely for its imaging prowess. As a primary phone, offering merely 128gb as the higher end option (and measly 2800mah battery) is not enough in 2019.

    I understand that Google Pixel is 800 USD in US but for a first time that is phone that when you go to UK, Germany or else in the world it is still being sold for 800 USD so the price is persistent.
    For example last year pixel 3 was 800 USD in USA and almost 1100 USD in UK, do you think that is fair pricing? Now Pixel 4 may be priced higher than iPhone 11 in USA, but that is only there because the iPhone 11 price changes from 750 USD to almost 950 USD and that places the Pixel 4 a lot cheaper than the overall competitors.

    Here I am a year later enjoying my Pixel 4. Battery regularly between 5-7 hrs on screen time, the battery definitely optimized over the first few weeks. Camera great as expected, 855 processor fast as hell, Android updates scheduled through October 2022, 90 Hz screen, far nicer build than my new plastic S21 (plus it doesn't thermally throttle like the S21). Here in 2021, if you can find a unsold P4 with a fresh battery, it's a far better phone than a new S21.

    Over a month in with my pixel 4(non xl) and I'm loving it for the most part. Yeah the battery could be better but I typically make it through the day. The bottom line for me was I was starting to tire of the large phones.. every time I would pick up my old Galaxy S8(non +) I would be pleasantly surprised on how small and sleek it was. The size and the 90hz display sold me on it and at this point there is no other choice. If Samsung come out with a s10e>S11e with that small frame and a 90-120hz display I'll likely trade in the pixel.. maybe... if the battery life is considerably better. I'd definitely be all over a mini version of a Oneplus 8 as long as it had a high refresh screen.

It starts at £669 here for the base model while the base model iPhone 11 is £729 and until the 28th October you also get a free Chromebook with the pixel worth over £200 which seems like a far better deal.

I forked out more money for the 256GB model because 64GB with 4K 60 and 3 cameras just will not cut it. So goodbye Android, see you (maybe) in about 4 or 5 years.
