YZF 600R looks and drives like a big, serious, fast, comfortable, sport touring machine. If you want you can take to race track too and compete with most sporty bikes. Brakes are so good that first R1 was using them. When I first time saw it I was scared to drive it, it looked so big, but after 5 min. driving I started loving it. I am 173 cm height and 60 kg weight but I have never had any problems with handling cat. At the high speed it give great wind protection.
I've got a '98 'Cat. Great machine. also have BT023s. other than that un-modded apart from SS pipes. I get 200miles+ from a tank and its bloody comfortable. Wouldn't swap it for anything.
Seems like I always defer to British shows to get the straight scoop on motorized vehicles. Thanks for all the work, and for the explanations at the end - well worth watching.
Personally speaking in the terms of sport bikes I do not like older ones it's just a preference, however that's badass to see guys with older and less expensive bikes with new ones. In conclusion ride your ride, and keep it shiny side up.
there is so much value to be had out there with very low mileage/km Japanese Bikes (excluding kawasakis). And once you tune them up and do a few basic things to them like flush all the fluids and change them all as well as clean the carbs. You have a very reliable working piece of machinery that should last you a very long time.
The world and his dog knows its slow, compared to any 600 sports bike from the time, even a few 600 sports tours. And for your information I ride a zx10
I just bought a thundercat let me tell you it's impressive not so powerful but with right about 100 hp it's enough to put a smile Everytime you crack the throttle... comfortable and light feels much lighter than it looks...
I like this...respect from the sun and hot tar of italy for all those bikers whom ride all seasons with cold and bad weather generally....this is real bikers spirit...cheers
so do you even ride a bike? this video is awesome for the people who don't want to spend big money but still have the experience of riding a motorcycle. keep the rude comments to yourself please.
Excellent video, it would be brilliant if all of your videos were this complete. Telling us the results and the reasons behind them in the video is the way to go.
Always good to see Trev Franklin. He’s right about Bruce Dunn being the hero of the day, I’d not want to be looking for a lap time on those bikes in those conditions. Would you?
Awful weather! But great report, my congrats on this one (and you know I'm hard to please :D). I love the idea, and the spirit of the truth being told as it is, instead of bought opinions from big selling companies.
Lol. They are faster, yes, but they are definately easier to ride. However, the supersports ARE more trackdedicated, so less comfy and easier to flick. My 750fi srad, i loved it death, but i ride soooooo much easier ln the rj15 r6
I know this is REALLY old buuuuuut, why does everyone seem to dog the Thundercat? Stage three kit, proper suspension setup and +2 rear -1 front ( 520 chain )and this "dog" of a bike will keep up with any group of liter bikes in real world scenarios. My wife owns a cat...STOCK as STOCK gets. She has only about 7 months of real experience riding and she "stonks" the bad boy liter riders in our motorcycle club daily. Most underestimated bike of all time. Why? simple, the R6. People tend to attribute performance with looks, for whatever reason, but it makes no difference. Performance and a really good design = fast, nimble and truly ready to race. There is a reason Yamaha did not chance even one bolt on the Cat for nearly 11 years. Tired of watching video after video of people who have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to the Thundercat. If you have not ridden one, find one, ride it and see why this thing is an amazing day to day "firecracker"
i know its an old vid, but comparing to newer tests and reviews, this video was just amazing! very complete, much details and as a viewer you really can see that you actually had fun doing this! so please, more of this in the future and not something like the "which super bike for under 5000" video, which didn't even give a proper answer to the question! hope you read this even if its kinda old :) thank you for this, greetings from germany!
I bet he had just passed his test, gone out and brought a new bike and had come to this vid with a superior complex. I would bet that he can't even push his little 600 fully :) I disagree with you on heads turning over older bikes tho. You'rs may but that's because you are a biker and so you can appreciate the older bikes. They bring back nostalgia. If I pull up next to a 1998 Fireblade on my 2012 Fireblade...the looks are going to be pointed towards my direction :)
cheers fellaz , a good down to earth informative video . all helps,. i flew my cat over to Pakistan 2010 and road the bike to Kashmir ., rough in some arias on the roads but did find limited roads to open her up in the mountain ranges and at altitude the dident miss a beat ,. carburettor engine no problems what so ever ,. just the riding position was back breaking getting to the mountains ,. full 5 stars for the thunder cat
what happened to adam? kudos to the guys driving in such weather though. Remember i once met adam at petrol station on M1 and he had a flat battery on this new ducati 1198 and me and my mate were trying to push start it ... it didn't work. but good times, proper sound guy.
i believe the challenge was "can you get a good track bike without paying 8-9 grand". seems like having a daytime mot was an excuse for a dnc, just arrive the day before then! better bike should be the winner. heck you could hire a trailer with all the savings you make.
I think that corner speed does not matter wich sportbike you have, it depends on the tyres and the weight. Only on a straight line the more powerfull bike wins. In 1998, i have followed many r1's in the Eifel area, and i could keep up with them on my 91 fzr 1000.
not all of us are made of money... i ride a 91 kawasaki zxr 400 and i keep up with a 05 gsxr 600 in the corners, sure it beats me in the straights and that, but with some tlc an old bike will still give you the thrill
I had Corsa 3's on a 03 636 that I bought. Great in the dry, but those tyres do make you come home with brown underwear in the wet! Dunlop Roadsmart's now, so damn good!
As many of us already knew rider makes a bike quick not the other way around. In saying this I bought a cbr600rr 07 and choose to get rid of my 91 due to mechanical problems as these guys found out old bikes generally cause a lot of problems.
@PPPatrickWWW Nice! i'm using a boss NS-2, and a reissue TS-808 as a boost into my 6262. Actually i just bought a set a JJ 6l6's, and the gold pin preamp tubes. I'm hoping to get a little darker tone, you think they'll help? WOOT! i'm loving the 7 string ibvy! i've got a agile interceptor 727, it's freakin awesome! Thinking about adding a delay here soon aswell.... BTW, you ride? i've got a 03 Z1000. love that bike, lol.
Good idea for a show, do old bikes keep up with the newest.... but badly executed. How hard is it to wait out for a sunny day, put same tires on all 4, get wireless Microphones for good sound, and make it professionally like a car show.
gsx 15 sec slower because of tire in other case it be very close or even win ,but allaround cbr the best . Good test is when all bike have egzacly the same tire , so new zx6 is around 4 sec faster on average lap overal not bad test but also not to good because of tire and weather on track .
Interesting . Although in reality, u leave all the bikes standard as they were made and CBR has it. Costs a little more but its Faster and more reliable. Does show u can have great fun on a fairly cheap bike.
noob here, noob question: what does adam mean when he says the gearing is set up for donnington? 1 down front and 1 up rear = more low end torque right? so is it just that on that track you dont need to/cant use the top end acceleration?
You don't get an increase in torque, altering final drive gearing cannot do that. The gearing is simply adjusted to give better acceleration at the cost of top speed. The rider also wants perfect engine speed exiting corners so that the revs are at the sweet-spot as soon as he taps the gas. Top speed is irrelevant at many circuits, when top speed is essential gearing can then be altered to give more.
elfspicer Obviously you don't get any more torque from the engine, but you will get more torque at the rear wheel which is what gives the improved acceleration.
Keep in mind people all these comparison videos on youtube are a matter of opinion to that rider. Using their opinion as concrete facts is pretty stupid. Live to ride, ride to live
I ride a 1985 GSX-R 750 slabside. Riding my old slabby gains far more interest from other motorcyclists than riding the same boring shit as everyone else on the road. Yea modern new bikes are of a much higher spec but who gives a shit. I stand out from the crowd & get noticed far more than Joe Blogs on the latest & greatest R1 or Gixer 1000. But each to they're own
Re; bikers on crutches; a common sight in the UK thanks to the NHS. People elsewhere, who have to either pay for private medical insurance or, simply, directly for their treatment tend to be a little more circumspect before they hoon around the countryside on crotch-rockets.
at least he broke left hand...hopefuly he is right hander xD...u know what i mean...im only jokin', come back to full strengh as soon as possible, great job and nice challenge
Not only arrogant, but if you ask me, the cost comparison of a used bike to a new one is just totally in favor of the older bike. I could have bought a off the show floor bike. But in my opinion you do not get much more from a brand new bike than an older bike. All sports bikes have enough technology in them that the average street rider is rarely good enough to ride it to it's full potential. I,d take my 98 f3 and $5k in my pocket any day over a new bike and no$5k!
@PPPatrickWWW haha!! tell me about it! so apparently, we both play bugera's, we both fly RC airplanes, and we both like motorcycles, lol. BTW, how's your 6260 treating you? :)

Another nice video, but I'd like to see the same bikes on a dry track
this is like top gear but with motorcycles... please do more MCN!
sometimes its funner to go fast on a slow bike then it is to go slow on a fast bike. great video.
I love my Thundercat :D
I still can't find a 600 sport bike as comfortable as my Yzf CAT.
The 600F is SO comfortable!
I’ve owned thundercat, ninja and car
Rode gsxr for a 300 mile trip
I feel the car is most comfortable
Agreed. Rideable all day long. The main problem I had with mine was the star crack prone fairing.
Love my 2007.

thundercats are loved in uk and Canada. I love my thundercat. i may look greasy cuz it s kinda looks bad. But i really love the weight.

I really like the thundercat too.
