An absolute gentleman and fantastic drummer. I have had the pleasure of meeting Ian and talking to him on several occasions. Always has time for people. He has been my hero since I was about 13 after finding my brothers Made In Japan LP, over 40 years ago.

The Mule on Made In Japan - still the best drum solo I've heard.

Such an accomplished, tasteful, musical solo. Very Morelloesque at the start. Drums sounded good, with a lovely ride cymbal and for me I love how he limits his crash cymbal use to pertinent punctuation. Have always loved this fella.

Some dumbo just had to ask the story of Smoke on the water question.... you could sense the collective silent groan ripple throughout the audience. Ian must have thought to himself.... "oh man... do I really have to tell this story again?"

Great thing for a left handed drummer playing a left hand kit is it cuts down on the annoying right handed player who want to come up and play your set just to try and show you up.

Those "Buddy Rich" rolls only a gifted drummer can do them. Many drummers do "buzz rolls" trying to duplicate songs on TH-cam to get attention. I had to correct a kid doing Zeppelin songs. He don't have the ability to do them then makes excuses he didn't notice that's what Bonham was doing the end of When the "Levee Breaks" Lots of practice. Ian is one of the best, very good with rudiments i always lacked in them, never had a teacher and still at 54 and left handed also i gave up and just continued the way i am. Never could read music either..

Ian, Out of all of the drummers from the 60's until today that I considered to be great like You, Buddy Rich, John Bonham, Tommy Aldridge, Mitch Mitchell " Only when he played with Jimi Hendrix
in the studio and live ONLY up until the day that Jimi was Murdered, because after that Mitch's playing went to total shit. Carl Palmer, Carmine Apice, Dino Danelli, and that's about it.
The point that I'm making is that Besides Buddy Rich who played from the time he was 2 years old right up until he was 70 years old, he played great, especially when he played in 1978 at
The Hague in Holland and did his drum solo. I have never seen a faster rudimental drummer that him except you. You are the only drummer, " Besides myself , and I'm 67 years old and can still
play with the same energy and speed with 110% endurance just like you except I'm nowhere near as good and advanced as you are or ever was. The point that I'm trying to make is that you
are still playing at a level as you were when you were 25 years old. You are and always have been my favorite drummer right next to Buddy Rich because you took what Buddy was capable of
playing and used it all in a Rock-N-Roll atmosphere with just about the Best Rock and Roll Band of all time, "" DEEP PURPLE "" No band or musicians will ever top Deep Purple 1- In Rock, 2-
Machine Head, 3- Who do we think we are, 4- Made in Japan etc... My favorite drum solo ever was your drum solo on the Made in Japan Album, "" The Mule. "" Those Silver Sparkle Ludwig 3-ply Classic Drums were tuned and sounded the best out of every drum set that I ever heard to this day. I have tuned all of my Ludwig and Slingerland drums to your set on that album to this day.
Now, I have a 1972 set of Slingerland 3- Ply maple/Poplar/Maple with reinforcement rings and my drum sizes are 5 1/2x14 Slingerland Buddy Rich TDR Snare, 9x13 mounted tom, 16x16 floor Tom, 16x18 Floor Tom and a 14x26 " 1956" Slingerland Bass Drum that sounds like a Bomb/Boom Sound. All of my drums are wide open. No muffling on any of them. I also have my original 6 1/2x 14 Ludwig Chrome over Brass Snare. All of my drums have the 1.2mm Pearl Fat Tone Rims just like all of the great drum companies used in the 60's. They all sound 100% better than those stupid 2.3mm Triple Flanged Hoops that weigh a ton. I recovered my Slingerland set with the Original Vintage White Pearl coverings. Not the yellowed type, but the pure white ones . My set looks like a brand new 1972 Slingerland set with all new hardware but sounds like an old Vintage set. They sound like Your Made In Japan Set even in my Living Room with no effects on them.
I hope you get this message because you are and always will be my favorite drummer forever. God Bless you Ian... Sincerely Joseph Monaco
