The thing is though, this car Big Red is a 25 year old race car just as you see it. It was raced for a few years then put in a museum and later taken back out to race every year after that and it's still the nearly undisputed top dog in it's racing class...25 years later. So make your argument about motor mounts all you want, on a normal hot rod you'd be right, but until you build something even remotely close to Big Red your just trying to argue online. Not trying to be a jerk, it's what it is.
There is no and never will be a car that has the reputation, records and longevity that has made Big Red what it is. It has no equal....I've been a fan since the late 80's, and never seen anything come close to it's lock on supercar status. So awesome it's an American Chevrolet....
Undeniably an awesome car. I first saw it in '93 at the Silver State Classic. Set the track record. Awesome seeing it in person. The Gottliebs have done a world class effort on this car and held true to their style of racing thru it all. Thanks for posting this video. I look forward to the movie.
Great Job Josh and Crew. Awesome footage. Hard to imagine 40 year old sheetmetal can be crafted by David & Larry to be competitive for decades. GM owes you guys a debt of gratitude. Outstanding to see Richard recognized for his consistent professional driving skills and commitment to this project. Dan Gottlieb you had a vision that the editors of Hot Rod would call ProStreet long after this car had won most everywhere they would let it run. All Hats Off - What An Effort. c.kaufmann
This car was designed for road racing the day it was built. The engine mounts and chassis stiffness will only reduce the twist created by the torque of the engine. In the end when the torque is great enough the engine will actually try twist the chassis, with a stiff enough chassis to take the torque the twist will be minimal but it will still twist and the suspension on the apposing side of the engine torque will be compressed. I.E. One side will squat down when you mash the loud peddle.
Apolo: Big Red utilizes a Lowrance Baja GPS device on the dash during events like the SSCC mostly because of it's large, bright display of the mph (Yes, the "220" you see is GPS calculated speed). While Lowrance does make fine fish finders, we especially like their GPS equipment.
Breathtaking video! Big Red and Mark Stielow's Red Devil and Mayhein are my all time favorite muscle cars! And I'm a Corvette Z06 man! More videos, please! Congrats from Brazil.
The hoonigan channel featured this car and my search brought me here. The engineering that went into this thing is next level. A lot of clever dual use details for some parts too.
The velocitization from driving that fast for so long must be extreme. I'm sure everything you experience would feel like slow-motion for minutes after getting out of the car on a drive like that. Beautiful car from any angle.
This car doesn't have typical motor mounts. They're solid motor mounts ,ZERO give, with a complete tube chassis frame. The motor is pretty much mounted solid to the frame, that's why the suspension is what has to give when the torque of it's monster of a motor is unleashed. The truth of the matter is that the torque making the car lean like that is only a problem if; 1 it's a pure drag car and that twist is adding 100ths of seconds or 2 the tires just can't hook up and spin.
+kill4me So, you're telling the world that you can build a Camaro that can win the Silver State Classic averaging MORE than 198mph? Yeah, I didn't think so.
The series has segments on Big Red's racing at Bonneville and El Mirage. Some of the vintage Salt and Lakes footage was provided by Odemoto Films, a mid-century vintage racing archive originally started by Ron Main, one of the owners of Bonneville Land Speed Record car The Speed Demon. Chris Engle now owns and operates the archive and he has a Dry Lakes car. One big happy hot rod family!
Hey-Shout out to Owen from Gate 148! Thanks for all the years of great corner work buddy. RIP Steve Waldman-it won't be the same without him. -RJ and The Big Red Team
Hey Folks, just a quick update since many of you have been asking. Please be patient on the release of the "film." Our editor is cranking away and it's coming along very nicely, but we have A MOUNTAIN of footage to assemble this epic masterpiece in true Big Red fashion-nothing is easy. We are picking up a few necessary interviews that need to be shot still to help tell the story. Does anyone have any suggestions out there? As you can imagine putting 25 years of history and 3 years of...
MYSTYKRACER: True "2012" came and went & the project still isn't finished. No issues with the ongoing project, in fact Big Red is taking on, for the first time ever Land Speed Racing-El Mirage in May and Bonneville at Speed Week 2013. We are thinking that after BNVL we might have an "ending" to the movie, though Big Reds story will never actually end. So over 300 hours of raw footage & still counting. Editors are working feverishly and there is an end ins sight-stay tuned and keep watching!
Alexi: Crap those DTI vids are sweet. Dang, I wish that events like MM and TTM would let us set up cameras right at the edge of the course! We have to stay back a good 200 yards so it makes it REALLY difficult to hold a 200mph car in the shot on an 800mm telephoto lens for a consistently long period of time (AND in Focus). We nail it every once in a while, but the rest of the time we have to cut away to on board cams and such.
Hmmm. Interesting Alexi. Video Trickery...? You mean editing? What videos would you suggest be watched for "just showing damn cars!" I'm genuinely curious.
NO BRAINER: Every car "lists" to one side under heavy straight line acceleration, it's the torque from the motor (inertia actually from the crankshafts spinning mass) loading up the frame, suspension, drivetrain and everything in between. I'm pretty sure there are no "bad" motor mounts, or anything else on Big Red.
Hey Corey, Excellent news. The Big Red boyz have been busy too, taking BRC to Bonneville this August for Speedweek. The car is all set up and prepped for land Speed Racing right now and has just had installed a blower motor. We are planning to run the Big Bore Bash at Willow in November. They'll take the car back to road racing setup for that-we should plan to do a shakedown and some head to head racing with your A47 Mustang in November-I'll shoot you guys an email too.- Don't sell that car!
...doco and racing footage together takes some time, especially to do it right. We will continue to upload little "taster" vids to keep your appetites from getting out of hand. Please keep checking in the The Big Red Camaro TH-cam page and by all means-Subscribe! -Thanks, Team Big Red and The Big Red film crew.
Great vid guys, made me drool a little! One thing though, the sound doesn't do that car justice. If you could use some quality mics and record this beast in action that'd be sick!
The car is impeccably maintained and has been by the same crew chief for 20 years, he is one with this car. So yes, 1918bibi, the car is "squatting" on the right rear in the final shot as the car is going away from you, good observation.
Hey Rick. Have you been living in a box, under a turtle? Big Red? Never heard of it? Ok. Well, were happy to have some newcomers/fellow 69er's join the party. Send us a link or some pics. If you want to know more about BRC, just google it.
Sorry for the 10 month delay guys. At 1:50, with the airplanes in the BG? That's Mojave Air & Space Port. The event is the Mojave Mile where BR holds the record at 234.4 MPH.
Nooooooo. Mark Stielow built his first Pro Touring Car more than ten years after Big Red was built way back in 1987. Big Red is widely credited with initiating the Pro Touring movement and inspiring guys like Stielow and Tony Huntimer.
Don't miss Big Red's upcoming docu-series, Big Red: The Original Outlaw Racer, premiering this July on NBCSN. Watch the trailer here: th-cam.com/video/0mp3yQQ9xIo/w-d-xo.html
+Big Red Camaro RJ, do you know what your cousin JJ is up to? If you speak to him, tell him John Hallman says hello. Still a great car, nearly 30 years after it was built. ;-)
+Big Red Camaro a dream car my friend this is the modern black 2000 zl1 camaro concept whit the 69 body shape, very lovely congrats im bulding soon a 69 camaro with the stock crate engine 572 ci fuel injected street weekend fighter just cant wait .
Ever since I was a kid in the 70 I wanted a 69 z big block they look so sweet my buddy had a 69ss 396 looked stock everyone pulled up and though they would eat him alive they where wrong He ate them up and spit them and took a dump on them Go. RJ bad ass 69 Z 427 keep it up RJ AND POPS AND THE REST OF TEAM KICK ASS AND FUCK THE NAMES
Josh Oliver: Surprisingly enough those Russkies at DragTimesInfo(the later videos, not the earlier chatty ones) do a fine job letting cars show their stuff. Man, those Russian guys like their American hardware, too: Mustangs,Vettes, SRT Jeeps and 300s, a little bit of everything. I haven't seen an American website do a better job of showcasing cars at their best. PureStockDrags comes close, but it's just some guy in the bleachers with a cam.
the motor mounts take car of the tq or moment within the engine bay. A stiff chassis distributes said tq. if its uneven like you claim, then its a problem having NOTHING to do with tq at the crank. but a distribution of force within the car. but either way, a resepctible car at the least. but cars produce more tq and power and dont have this problem.... this problem will be cured when its designed for raod racing
can you actually believe someone wrote "the car has bad motor mounts" because its listing on the right rear tire. I bet he thinks there rubber pads like his moms geo metro.
Soooo yeah, "Due out end of 2012"? Today my calender says January 2014! Shame, I was really looking forward to paying actual money to see this completed video . . .
i read all your thoughts, but the fact is, if tq is a problem, such as this, then, maybe you need better mounts...because if tq, if it is the problem, you need a new power structure. a car shifting under psower, means YOU have bad MOTOR MOUNTS
The thing is though, this car Big Red is a 25 year old race car just as you see it. Pity they can't kill the music so we can hear the SOUND
agreed I would rather hear the motor

Gotta save something for the next video...LOL. We have killer audio of BR - will lay it in on an upcoming vid. Thanks for the feedback!
Great video , need to chill out with the music. Rather b hearing engine sounds.
One of my favorites this thing is just brutal
Amazing car!!!! This car is a true legend... congrats.
Y does everybody wanna fuck up these videos with music! the motor IS the music!

Holy Shit! The Legendary Big Red!!!!

That's just the torque from the 1000hp big block twisting the car. This is my definition of a REAL legendary car.
Fabulous video, but please turn off the music track occasionally to let us hear the mechanical music of the car itself.
Awesome car I have no idea how many different types of racing you did with that car.

Such a nice car

Frick’n music video.
can you actually believe someone wrote "the car has bad motor mounts" because its listing on the right rear tire. I bet he thinks there rubber pads like his moms geo metro.
It would have been a good video without the lousy music.
The only thing wrong with this car is that I don't own it lol

Baddest sounding car on the planet and you destroy it with shit music. Excellent job.

Yo,FBI profilers!
Whats up with the effing annoying music: I cut this sh!t short, couldn't take the music.
