Give yourself some grace with the sentimental items. I have so many pics of my children in their favorite items. My SONshine held onto a few favorite Tshirts that he later gave to my 3 grands & now we have pics of them in Uncle Paul's favorites. Also my daughter is now wearing her brothers baseball t's. We feel fortunate to have "pieces" of him to remember him by ~ Your video's are just getting better and I appreciate how you share your lifestyle ~ hello from Charleston, SC

My friend got patchwork teddy bears made out of the favourite items and the children got the teddies. When they no longer wanted them she kept them herself. She sat them on her bedroom chair and saw them daily rather than just having them packed away in a box never to be looked at.😊❤

@@Chrissyhappy I used my dad's ties to make a quilt/tree skirt. Also made pillows out of some of the t'shirts. Snoopy golf shirt was the favorite of all. My daughter and I both love minimalism & project 333, but a pop of sentimental helps most days.

Oh, that's so special! 💕 We have some toys that were my brothers and I love that the boys have something from the uncle they never had a chance to know. Thank you so much for watching and your comments. I appreciate your encouragement and sharing snippets of your life. 💖 I also love the idea of a tie tree skirt! What a functional and beautiful way to make use of your dads ties. 😭💕

@chrissyhappy I've seen things like that and I think it would be so fun to do. I've also seen baby pajamas stuffed and turned into a teddy bear wearing little pjs. 😍

I’m halfway through the video and can we just pause to acknowledge how realistic this video was!! Being sentimental, knowing that button downs aren’t realistic for everyday wear, making decisions along the way based on the situation, etc. and I know how hard work it must be to go through all these piles of clothes!!! 🎉🎉🎉 and THANK YOU for showing all the layering long sleeve pieces and comfortable sweatpants!!! So realistic.

Thank you so much! Sometimes I worry that my ramblings take away from the video, but I guess they're a lot of what makes it helpful. 😅 Thank you for watching and your kind comment. 😊💕

This is something I hope to achieve with my two boys wardrobe this fall. Thanks for the visual aid! I have so many things I've been given in the last year or so and just need to actually go down to what the boys actually wear and need and do this to future sizes, too ! Just a whole lot of tots and ziploc bags of stuff at the moment 😅

I feel so thankful for hand-me-downs, but I feel like sometimes it can get very overwhelming. Like this feeling of obligation to use most of it all. Maybe it's just me. 😅 Thank you for watching. I hope this video helps you get to a point where everything feels manageable. 💕 Just another one of those parts of parenthood nobody prepares us for haha.

Step Whatever 😆🤣 That's the one where it gets worse before it gets better!
I like your "functional" category and how it covers opposite extremes: mucking around and for actual functions when you need nicer clothes.

100% the part where it gets worse before it gets better. 😅
Thank you, I think the functional irem system has worked out so well. Mostly because I already over think so much of this process that If those things just don't "count" it's 10x easier. 🎉

If I can give a PNW hack….i would HIGHLY recommend a Reima snowsuit. When we lived back home (WA) my kids (baby to 3 years old) would basically wear their Reima snowsuits any time we left the house. They’re legit waterproof. My older kid also went to forest school in hers. I had two in rotation (but we were wearing multiple times a day plus forest school).
The main reason I recommend is for the waterproof factor but also to help water from getting them wet/cold from the gap from bottom of coat to top of pants. If that makes sense.
To clarify, we had these instead of jackets and rain pants. They’re a bit spendy but SO worth it for PNW fall/winter/spring.
Thank you for your videos! I’ve enjoyed watching them ❤

Thank you for the recommendation! I was looking at them and wondering if they would be too warm, but I found the waterproof outdoor jumpsuit that seems like it would be a good fit for the wet days that are cold, but not freezing. Something like this would probably be a good call this year since we're supposed to have a really cold and snowy winter... which I'll believe when I see because last year we got MAYBE a half inch of snow. 😅 I like the idea of the a whole suit and not an overalls and coat situation. Thank you so much for much for watching (and for reminding me that I need to start looking into a forest school for next year). 😊💕

@@SimplifyingTheSatherns They even have some non-insulated rain suits too! Yeah forest school is great! There are so many options there! Here in Missouri it’s abysmal even though the weather is so much better for it. We went to one in Enumclaw that was excellent, we loved it.

Yay! So helpful. I will be using your link for the rain pants. I've been trying to find something like this thrifting to no avail. Woot!

I ran into that problem as well. I had only looked at second hand sites online, but everything I found was just pants or the wrong size. I needed the full overall effect for when he inevitably sits in a large puddle. 😅

I do a capsule wardrobe for both of my kids and myself as well. I don’t like having a lot to manage so this system works really well for us. My kids have one to two tops for every bottom so there’s some variety in their outfit parings. Then they have two each of layering pieces like crew necks, hoodies, and full zip jackets. This is so they have one to wear when the other is in the wash.

    • @SimplifyingTheSatherns
      @SimplifyingTheSatherns  28 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

It sounds like you've mastered the system! 🎉 About how many bottoms do you feel like has been a good amount? I haven't done a capsule for my oldest son (8) since his jeans and tshirt wardrobe hasn't felt overwhelming. I do need to go through his clothes and separate his grubby holey jeans from his new school stuff. He really just does not care (which I actually kind of admire😅) and will wear old play clothes to school.

@@SimplifyingTheSatherns I don’t usually have more than eight bottoms out and accessible to my kids at a time. I like to have spares packed away as replacements when they’ve worn through round one. This is why I love shopping secondhand lol.

I like the idea of having your go to items, but then having the backups tucked away just in case, because there could easily be a time where Alec goes through 8 pairs of pants over the course of 3 days haha. But I do feel like 8 is a more realistic (and minimal) amount than what I ended up with. I sometimes feel overwhelmed by the hand me downs. LIke I'm thankful... but also there's so many options. 😅

Well…I had a comment typed…and was distracted by an emergency diaper change. 😂
I don’t think you were too off thinking it would stay warm and dry until October (at least in the part of the PNW we are in that’s been the trend for the last handful of years). This September is reminding me more of what the weather was like growing up.
With that said I did have to take stock of long pants and warmer shirts a few weeks ago and realized 12 month pants were still fitting but high water…and the 18 month are a little big/long…
For things like that little t-shirt I have a small tote (the kind people use for storing shoes) I keep sentimental items in. I definitely have a few clothing items tucked away that I associate with a certain stage or milestone and just can’t seem to part with.

Ahhh, a good ol' poop to keep you on your toes. 😅
That's how it was the last couple years where we are as well, and like you, it reminded me of the weather from when we were kids. On Monday when I decided to do this, the next 2-3 days had rain on the forecast and then that evening the forecast changed to sunshine and rainbows for the rest of the month. 🤦‍♀️
That's a good idea to have a dedicated tote. I've just been tossing things in amongst my hobby supplies in my hope chest. 🙃 I have a few baby/toddler things that I feel timeless or extra special that I have tucked away. If I'm not careful though, half of their stuff will end up my sentimental basket.

@@SimplifyingTheSatherns I made the mistake of going back through all of the stuff I had set to donate so I could move it to garbage bags and in the process pulled half of it back out. 😂 I’ve decided moving forward I need to get it out of the house right away or I’m going to be hoarding every item of clothing this kid has ever worn for the foreseeable future.

I may have missed it, but did you say how it went for him?Was it enough clothes, or did you have to do laundry a lot more? I tried to do a capsule for my toddler and I just got soo overwhelmed. I had to buy him a whole new wardrobe for fall, and I tried to be strategic, but I ended up going crazy shopping 😅.

    • @SimplifyingTheSatherns

This is my first time doing a capsule for Fall specifically, but Winter and Summer were just fine. I never ran into any shortage of clothes and after being almost 2 weeks into his Fall wardrobe, things have been really good. Granted we haven't had a ton of rainy weather just yet, but hopefully those rain overalls will help reduce the amount of outfits he goes through in a day. 😅 It's so hard to go shopping with a plan and be able to follow though (coming from me as an overthinker). I have to do everything online if I'm going to actually follow through with any strategy I have the intention of following. 🤣
