Hiking to the top of Massachusetts! Mount Greylock loop hike from the Hopper Brook Trailhead

  • Mount Greylock is Massachusetts highest mountain at 3,491 feet. It stands in the middle of a long ridge of mountains that include Mount Williams and Fitch to the north and Saddle Ball Mountain to the south. The Appalachian Trail runs over this entire ridge generally from north to south and there are a multitude of trails surrounding Greylock that climb the mountain from several different directions. The mountain is steep from just about every direction and almost all the ascents include over 2,000 vertical feet of climbing.
    Our favorite way to hike Mount Greylock is from the west via the trailhead on Hopper Road. From this trail head the Hopper Trail and the Money Brook Trail provide access to Prospect, Williams, Fitch and Greylock. We followed the Money Brook Trail up Money Brook, to the Mount Prospect Trail, up Mount Prospect and then connected with the Appalachian Trail. From there we followed the Appalachian Trail southward up and over Mount Williams, along the ridge to Mount Fitch and then made the final climb to the summit of Mount Greylock after connecting with the Thunderbolt Trail. From the top of Greylock we followed the Hopper Trail down off the summit and then dropped down the Hopper and eventually made our way back to the trail head on Hopper Road. That's about a 13 mile loop and you've got about 3100 vertical feet of relief from the parking area to the summit of Greylock.
    The hike begins at the end of Hopper Road. There's a fairly large parking area with an informational kiosk at the trailhead.
    Mount Greylock does have an auto road to the summit that you will cross on this hike. The summit also features numerous amenities, though at the time of year we did this hike (late April) none of the summit buildings were open and there was no running water available at the summit.
    As for water, after leaving the Money Brook Trail on this loop, there is no water until the small pond on the Hopper Trail after you begin descending Mount Greylock. In the months when the summit lodge is open, water would be available from a hiker water spigot on the outside of the lodge.
    In the summer months, the snack bar in the lodge is a great place to get a mid hike hamburger!
    The entire loop was a little over 13.1 miles in length and gained about 3130 vertical feet along the way.

    Great hike! About 20 years ago In did a mountain bike loop around Greylock. Mostly old fire roads. But it was also a but kicker.

      It’s one of our favorites, but thinking about doing it on a bike just makes us tired!

    Hi guys 👋 firstly huge apologies we haven’t been getting notified when you post so it appears we have missed quite a few, so we will be catching up for sure! Loving your new logo! Jill loves your mirrored wayfarers. This looks a great hike and it looks a lovely sunny day but hot 🥵 ooo a cider fountain nice 😂good advice on the water, we have been caught out a few times. Wow 🤩 those views and you are not even at the top! You guys are fun and this was a fun hike really inspired us to get our booties in gear and get out today and do atleast 10 miles not sure we are quite ready for 13 miles especially with those heights we’ll done guys have a great weekend 👍❤

      Don’t worry! We’re all so busy, but we know you’ll catch up. We go thru TH-cam watching spurts, so totally get it.
      We love our Goodr glasses. Cheap, decently durable, and when they do break or you lose them, you don’t feel guilty.
      Oh the cider!! Lightweights here and guzzling that can between us, then next bit of the hike just seemed to float by lol!!
      Greylock is a great hike - about 2 hours from where we live and we try to do it once a year. Real butt kicker, but also rewarding and a different experience then we get in the Catskills all the time.
      Hope your weekend is going fabulously! We’re on our way to visit our good friends and have some hiking and camping adventures with them.

    Beautiful triail. Over here in the PNW, I'm jealous of such a nice sunny day. We had a nice day last week where it was almost 90 degrees. But ... back to rain and cold for another month.

      The next day 2 weeks of 40 degrees and rain began. Thankfully the weather has finally started to break for the better here.

      It did rain today here in the PNW, but summer is coming and it won't be a better time to hike your favorite trails or explore new ones.
      Love the videos, BTW!

      We make an annual pilgrimage to Greylock and environs - it’s a butt kicker, but it’s a beautiful mountain and hike.

    I have to say also that it seems super weird to me that this is in April and there's no snow at that summit. Over here, the majority of our ski areas still have 4 to 5 feet and are still operating.

    • @HikerTrashHusbands
      @HikerTrashHusbands  ปีที่แล้ว

      We had a good snow year, but early in April we had a week of sun and temps in the 80s to 90s (really off the charts hot weather) about three weeks before we recorded this video. That week really knocked the snow way back across the northeast. There were a few patches in the shade in greylock, but nothing much.
      Further north in the White Mountains and the rest of northern New England there’s still a good amount of snow on the peaks.

    What’s your favorite Greylock route/loop?

    • @HikerTrashHusbands
      @HikerTrashHusbands  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      More or less the loop we cover in this video. The only change would be to go out to Stony Ledge and down the Haley Farm Trail instead of Hopper. Not much change in distance but adds another view.

    Where do u recommend setting up camp if hiking greylock. I have heard of shelters but don’t have a resource for exactly where they are

    • @HikerTrashHusbands
      @HikerTrashHusbands  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There’s a shelter just off the Appalachian Trail between Prospect and Williams. Thats the only official shelter along that route, and we aren’t too sure what the camping rules are for MA state reservation lands. I’m sure their website has info (link is in the video description).
