    Hi Kim, I think it’s great that you are showing us how to make compost. Your video couldn’t have come at the best time for me, It gave me something to be excited about the new garden year. My garden is buried under a foot of snow. I started some seeds of lettuce, dill, cilantro, parsley, Chinese pink celery, and snow peas!!! I have grow lights to keep them warm so they can keep growing. I can’t wait to make my very own compost for the first time in my life. I am super excited about this Kim thank you so much.

      Hi Nicole - fabulous! Glad you're not letting the snow stop you from growing your own fresh food! Those are great veggies to grow indoors so you can scratch that garden itch even in the winter. So proud of you! Have you considered composting indoors? Here's a link to my small space composting in a 5 gal container video. Perfect method for you, bit.ly/calikimcompost5galcontainer. Let me know how it goes!

      CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY Hi Kim, thank you so much for your reply, it means a lot to me . I enjoy learning from your knowledge and your videos are very helpful to be able to see you in action showing us all easy gardening can be. I am on a very tight budget and I have to rely on resources and try to make use of what I already have . You help make it possible for me to be able to still garden. You are awesome 👏 Thank you Kim

    Another great video, Kim. I have always felt that composting is one of the most useful, most basic and one of the most rewarding endeavors any gardener can engage in. There is something so fascinating about watching nature turn leaves and pine needles, kitchen waste and lawn clippings magically into rich compost. Thanks for all the great content.

    Hey Kim, we chatted briefly on the last livestream on this topic, for northern gardeners this time of year with freezing temps. I was a bit too negative... anyone who goes through the steps and does this level of preparation should be able to hot compost anywhere, anytime. The key is getting motivated to do these steps! It may also help to add a little nitrogen to get it started. My compost materials are under six inches of snow... but with dedication it could be done.

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Cliff, I've never composted in freezing temps, so your feedback is very valuable! I feel like since the pile is getting hot internally, it may still do so in freezing temps. At the very least, it will give a a jump on making black gold for a spring garden. Thanks!

    How often do you end up having to turn the pile?
    Does the pile need to be in sun?
    How often are you adding water?
    What about winter ❄️... in 0 degrees

    The compost sack is a bit pricey. I live in an urban environment in Northern VA and have very limited space. Additionally, esthetics must be considered to prevent spouse and neighbor complaints. For gardening, I plant in various small spaces that I put among my landscaping. For compost, I use several methods. 1) I have a rotating tumbler, that gives me one tumbler full a year. 2) I was gifted a "rolling style" tumbler that does the same. 3) I also have 2 DIY wire enclosures 2'X2' along my fence where I make leaf mold. Takes about a year. 4) My daughter gifted me a 360 degree worm farm which I use to make worm castings. I get 3 trays per year. 5) In the winter, I also use the dig, dump, and cover method where I put shredded paper and kitchen scraps directly into my unplanted garden beds. By spring, the beds are ready to plant. 6) I also mulch with shredded limbs, hardwood mulch, or composted cow manure. After a season the mulch turns in to beautiful compost. I enjoy your videos.

    Hello Kim. I am a recent subscriber to your channel. I live in northern Wisconsin. I am prepping my first vegetable garden area now, and I just made my first hot compost pile 3 days ago. I do not have a thermometer, but my piece of rebarb is barely warm. When I turned my pile, I could feel slight warmth in the center. Temps here are like 50s during day and 20s-30s at night. Is it just too cold out to get the compost hot at this point? Do I need to wait to build my hot compost pile till it gets warmer? I am unsure if I am doing something terribly wrong or if it is just too cold out to get the heat I need. I would very much appreciate any suggestions you have. Thank you very much

    Hi, greetings from Holland! Thank you for these interesting and instructive videos. We're having a mild winter here and I've built two compost piles. Ons of them is not heating up so much anymore (23 C) after turning it and I do not have enough kitchen waste to add. I do have a lot of fresh cow manure (mixed with hay) would that work as well? (the pile is moist enough)

    I followed your instructions but I don’t have the sag. I used 55 gal plastic container instead. I check today after 2 days put them under the sun with the black plastic on top.
    I did not feel any heat. I dumped it out & rotate it & put back to the container.
    Do you know why it does not generate heat? I use green grass & brown leaves but I felt no heat from the grass. Help. Thanks.
