Sharpen the shovel to make the chopping easier and when moisture needed, pour in a flat beer instead of (or in addition to) water. the hops and grains help heat it up better.
I like what Mark from self efficient me does more and I tried this winter and love it. It is to just dump all your stuff in a pile and let your chickens do all the work
Every tine I use my home made compost I say a little blessing for u for u owe it to u ,very beneficial to my garden Saving a lot of money , get better harvest and way less garbage to the landfill, thank u 🙏👍👍❤️
You are the reason that I’ve started composting. I’m trying multiple methods, i. e. Plastic trash can, bin that I turn and a wire fence bin. I’m having so much fun experimenting and learning about this. I can’t wait until next spring to start a garden.
Great explanation as always CaliKim! Perfectly worded to understand easily! I haven't given up yet, but I will start again for the 16th year of failure. Yes I keep failing, but I never knew it had to be 3X3 so I'll try that and increase my browns. I remain determined to have a successful one.
Very good video, good presentation, step by step guide, makes the work simple and fun. Thanks for being kind and generous to share this beneficial tips. Bless you.
I just made a tumbling composter with a plastic barrel, a pallet and four casters for the barrel to roll on. Seams like a good way to really mix everything up. Loading it up for the first time today!
Great video! My tip is never let your compost get too dry. Good drainage is important, but the bacteria that break down compost need some moisture to do their job.
I just made my own DIY compost bin out of a plastic storage container and poked holes above, below and around and added the following kitchen scraps, tea bags, and coffee grounds including some of the stuff you showed in this video and I can’t wait to see how it turns out. Thanks for the tips!
Anyone with a little space should compost. It's amazing how empty your trash cans can be, when you compost your paper, food scraps, and tree leaves. If everyone with space did it, we'd have free compost and lower our carbon footprint. And it's cool to witness trash magically turning into dirt.
I moved to the suburbs six months ago and thanks to this video have started composting. Where do you keep their kitchen scraps while youre waiting to make a compost pile. I’ve started keeping them in the freezer but am worried there wil be too much? Maybe I’m overthinking it. I guess the best thing is to have 3 compost piles. But for now I will start with one.
Just finished reading your book "Raised Bed Garden" excellent! I wish I didn't spend $$$ on gardening before reading it, but now I'm better informed. Thank you~
Hi Miguel - glad you enjoyed it - thanks for reading it! Now your wiser the next go around. Have fun with your raised bed garden - and enjoy those homegrown veggies!
I've watched so many videos on composting OMG. Thanks for keeping it short and to the point. I'll have to get one of those sacks, just started my first compost in a cow feed bucket. Wish me luck.
This video is very helpful. I have been intimidated at starting a compost, but seeing this video, and the space you have, its seems so easy. Thanks for the tips, I'm going to start composting.
I save my own coffee grounds and sometimes I even get some from my local STARBUCKS! I also save my used tea bags and bury them in the soil. I’m currently in the process of growing boysenberries and I remember how amazed I was with the results.
Perfect timing, Denise! You should be able to get your compost pile nice and hot with these tips and have black gold for your garden in no time! Thanks for watching!
Ah! Goes to show for myself I need to look more than once at episodes shown. My pile was shrinking as I added material and may have been thinking I was doing something wrong.Well now I know it’s perfectly normal. Another video from you did point out a mistake I really did make. I was not placing materials on the bottom conducive to giving air flow. Thanks for these tips. Will endeavour to apply them as time goes on.
Nice video! I like to put my greens into a trash barrel 1/4 way up and use my weed trimmer the chop everything up faster. I use my leaf shredder to chop up the oak leaves into a finer mix. Living in central Florida we have more oak leaves than another kind of leaves.
It takes longer; but, I use hand-held pruners or garden shears to cut up yard trimmings. During the lawn mowing season, I try to rake up the cut grass; but, the lawnmower that the lawn maintenance crew uses chops the cut grass so fine that it makes it hard to rake up. My compost bin is a large Rubbermaid garbage can that we drilled holes in. The bin only has trouble getting hot during the winter and early spring. But, I keep putting stuff in it. I don't have a pitchfork; but, I have a tool called The Claw that I can use to turn the pile to a certain extent.
Kim, if you add a Nitrogen source like blood meal or feathermeal...it will start even faster. I use organic products, but using a peletized fertilizer with Nitrogen in it will work too.
Thanks for the tip, Tannebaum! That's a good alternative to people who don't have a good nitrogen source. I like to keep low/no cost, so I try to collect all the materials that I can from free sources. Enjoy your black gold!
Great presentation. Easy to absorb. Questions: 1. Your compost sac- has it got holes for the liquid to get out? 2. Can hard plastic containers good enough for composting in the absence of the sac? Hope to hear from you soon. Thank you.
Hi Esther, the Compost Sac is made out of a very durable aerated fabric, the water drains very well, and the compost gets AIR, which its critical to helping it break down faster. You can use hard plastic containers, but you should drill several holes so the compost gets air and doesn't get soggy. Thanks for watching!
Hi very good videos after that use that compost to activate it whit biochar for gardening . look up the history of biochar for gardening have a nice day Kenny from northern Kentucky USA
OH MY GOSH I AM SO GLAD I FOUND YOUR VIDEO.. I have a small composting roll bin and have been filling it . now that i know im going to take it all back out chop water and start over. thank you
Hi Kim thank you for this easy composting. One question, will this size of compost generate enough heat to heat up a 11ft x 10ft x 7ft greenhouse? Or should I have more then one compost bags? Thank you
Great video ! How can I store the completed compost for future use ? In breathable non airtight plastic bags and would this harm or kill the helpful worms that are within the compost soil ?
Hi Debbie, so glad you enjoyed the video. We accidentally left out the clip where we added them to the pile, but showed the bucket of kitchen scraps at the beginning of the video. You can use vegetable and fruit scraps (eggshells, coffee grounds, and tea bags too), but no meat or dairy products. Let me know how your composting goes!
I deliver newspapers, so I pick up the grass clippings on the side of the road on my routes. I mulch my excess papers and add sawdust and whatever else I can find. It's all free. To add a little phosphorus, to the mix, I take a few clumps of kitty pee from the litterbox and mix that in.
Hi Me & You, I've used the Compost Sak for years, it's such simple solution to composting. Keeps everything neat and contained and keeps the critters out! How's composting going for you?
@@CaliKim29 I haven't successfully built a hot compost yet. I had a question I saved up a garage can full of kitchen scraps(only) over a year ago when I checked it looked all like dark dirt. Is this safe to use even though I didn't have the right ratios? Thanks for sharing your videos !
Thank you for an excellent program. I dig my backyard and put everything, covered with plastic and regularly watered it through winter. Everything melted except for vine branches, they are still there in a soggy state. Any suggestions?
Thanks! I have a question: my temperature is around +29 all year round. Can I expect my compst be ready super fast if I keep it moist? Another question: can I position compost bin under the rabbit cage, their poo and urine will drop in it. Will that be a good idea (especially I'm worried about the urine, it'll be a lot!)?
It's not great for rabbits to be walking on wires or fence type materials ect, why not just scoop out the waste and put it in the compost pile next to the cage?
Hi Naheed - a great free resource, this is where I got my coffee grounds. It feels good to re-use them to make free fertilizer for the garden! Thanks for watching!

Oils and meat juices will really jump start a compost pile. Just make sure to mix it in with plenty of fine browns, so you don't attract vermin.
