    Thank you so much for all your wonderful videos on growing veggies and composting, i'm a 84yr old granny and I have given away most of my flowers I had in my pots so I could grow some veggies instead, and they are looking good so far. Thanks again
    for all you tips, that lovely smile and all the encouragement you give!

    Suggestion. Add raw rice mixed in. Then a half cup of molasses mixed in a 4 gallon bucket of water poured over the pille evenly. Lactobacili jumps through thr pile, especially dry organics creating faster break down.
    Great work Kim. Love your vids.

    Great video! For a bin or bag that is open to the soil at the bottom. I use a 3 inch x 24 auger attached to my elec/batt drill. You drill down every 6 to 8 inches and pull up to turn the compost. Its hard at first but as you get it turned it gets easier. Very effective and takes about 10 minutes for my 4x4 compost bin. DON'T USE THIS IF YOUR BAG OR BIN IS NOT OPEN TO THE SOIL. THE DRILLS HAVE A LOT OF TORQUE. IF YOU HIT THE BOTTOM YOU COULD HURT YOURSELF OR THE BIN.

    If you had a bucket to temporarily empty some top compost into it, you could get to the bottom to turn better, and then just refill all.

    wouldn't it be a lot easier if you had two sacks and then you just transfer the compost from one sack to another? that way you'll grantee that your compost is 100% upside down !

    My 9 year old daughters and I started our compost pile today - inspired by your video series on composting. We have a compost tumbler. What are your thoughts on tumblers? Also - would you suggest adding compost starter? Does it speed up or help the process? Thanks for the great videos!

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fantastic, Greg! I love that you are composting with your daughters and teaching them how to make your own black gold! One of the things I love about composting is that there are so many ways to do it - I love the Compost Sak method, but do what works for you. A handful of finished compost or compost with each layer is helpful to kickstart the microbial action, but not absolutely necessary. Let me know how your compost goes!

      As a starter - you can also use instant yeast (used for baking bread for instance) 1 Packet dissolved in say 1 - 2 liters of lukewarm water; let it stand for 5-10 minutes and pour onto pile. Another starter is the liquid fertilizers - especially the seaweed containing type. Dissolve in lukewarm water as per instructions and pour onto pile. Cow or horse manure excellent starters - if available.

    Would you choose this bag over the bin that you built with the t posts and wire? and do you ever punch holes in your growing bag with the pitch fork? I just built a bin with the t posts and I'm on day 3..Getting ready this afternoon to go out and check it.. I've been following you and doing it the way you're showing..Thanks for the help with these videos..Judy in Tennessee

    I'm surprised you were able to turn it as well as you did. I scoop a good portion out into a wheelbarrow to make it easier to get to the bottom. 2 wheelbarrows is better.

    Question on turning your compost pile. If you have a send bag, could you just take a pitchfork and scoop on bag into another, putting the top of one pile onto the bottom of the other? Or os there a reason you would not want to do this?

    My composter is in the corner of our yard that's close to a tidal creek. Mosquitoes and flies have nested in there I guess and terrorize me now every time I go to turn it and it's driving me crazy!!! I don't want to ruin my hard earned compost by spraying pesticides in/around it. What do you suggest I do?

      Get it hotter, if it's not hot, maybe it's too small, or the wrong ratio of carbon, nitrogen, water and air.

    I’m using a Rubbermaid trash can for my compost bin. I’ve drilled nickel sized holes in it for airflow and I’m keeping the lid on loosely. Do you think I will have success with this method? I’ve never composted before, but have always wanted to.
