    Smallrig is the better choice after watching this...

    • @fabthefab75

      You have no idea... I bought both at aliexpress and i'm selling the Tilta right now. Tilta can only use one 4mm thick filter, Smallrig can accomodate both 2mm and 4mm and you can use two filters at the same time. Plus you can use larger lenses and so it's easier to add a circular filter before the adapter. Definitely a better mattebox in any aspect except size...

    Solid comparison but given how the SmallRig matte box is superior in almost every way to the Tilta its weird how you'd single out the size as such a big negative. Also, matte boxes are typically larger especially if they are doing the job they are designed to do. I've worked on everything from giant 35mm Panavision cameras to small Super 16s, DSLRs and everything in between. The SmallRig is hands down the better matte box. Finally, its so awesome that we live in a time where gear like this can be had for such a good price! It wasn't that long ago that even the "cheap" clones were still upwards of $500. Thanks again for a good review.

      That's so true! The SmallRig Matte Box definitely has more features! I was just choosing the Tilta one because of my small setup, but as I said if you have a bigger setup with cine lenses, the SmallRig one is a much better option. Cheap gear is definitely getting better, and that is awesome! Thank you for sharing your experience! Thank you so much for your kind words and support on the video too!

      true ! The smallrig mattebox was 30% yesterday, I jumped on it, so cheap for a mattebox. If anyone has any advice regarding good ND filters for it, I'm in. I'm considering the Nisi filters, but I would like to get a good bundle to be able to go through the day without an issue.

      Smallrig makes a mini which is the size of the Tilita so it makes this comparison a bit pointless.

    Great video, thank you. I just received my Smallrig matte box and, you're right, it is pretty big on a mirrorless (Z6) camera. That said, I really like the filter holding system from a security standpoint and, for me, that makes it a keeper. Of course it helps that nearly all of my 'rigging' is Smallrig. I'm impressed with the build quality of all their stuff.

    Just a small input here: If you have 82mm-or less filters (which are way cheaper than 4x5.6) as i use them on fujinon's mk series , the smallrig is unusable as a clamp on as it doesn't have the double thread.
    this and the weight (more than double) is why i got the tilta's. If I ever need big cine lenses (2 times a year maybe) I just rent them withe the right filters and mattebox etc

    My two cents. Actually the only one matte box usable with filters is the smallrig, because the filler settles actually INSIDE the matte box while on the Tilta it sits on its surface... which is bad. It will flare and you will be most likely required to put black foil on the sides.

    I've tried both and the Tilta is ever so slightly more my preference. I prefer its smaller size (I was surprised when the Small Rig matte box arrived by how big it was) and I generally only use one filter at a time, so the Small Rig option for two filters is mostly unnecessary for me. My first impression was the Small Rig matte box felt a little 'flimsy', although I haven't had any trouble with it. Over time, I am sure I will acquire more cine lenses so the Small Rig matte box will ultimately be the better option. But at the price point, even buying both is a bargain, especially when compared with the cost of bigger and heavier rail mounted matte boxes.

    I returned the Small rig one and keep Tilta one for my compact rig setup. The main key for me to use a compact matte box is the smaller size and lightweight. If I use a bigger set or with heavy cine lenses, I will add a 15mm rod system for lens support and then I can use a bigger matte box that has more features and also has side barn doors. In my opinion, the Smallrig one is at a weird middle point that doesn't reach neither "compact& lightweight" nor "professional featured".

    • @yueshen9606
      @yueshen9606 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      BTW, compared to the Smallrig one, Polar Pro's matte box seems better. At least it has a rotatable design for filters. But, yeah, it's way more expensive.

    Great video man. I ALMOST got mad at you, when you said not to buy the smallrig matte box, lol... cause I just got one! You've said it all. I was shopping for matte boxes for quite awhile and although the SmallRig is not the Polarpro matte box and it doesn't close when you put the 4x5 filter inside, I love having the choice of putting two filters and then also being able to put 4x4 filters, which gives me an extra! Also! I just tried it using a black pro mist on the lens, plus the matte box. Great experience and results. Thanks!

    Excellent review Henry! I own both and I'd like to point out a couple of other differences.
    First, if you are just mounting on the lens, the Tilta is certainly smaller and works well. However, if you want to mount the box to a rod, the Smallrig wins. I use a large (77mm) variable ND filter and also I often use a Black Mist Pro 1/8 or 1/4 screw mount, also 77mm. You have to rotate the variable ND. With the Smallrig, I use the optional rail mount with the end of the lens "floating" in the matte box. While Tilta has the rail mount you pointed out, it's pretty flimsy and it is much harder to get it to line up with my camera. I use circular filters because they are much cheaper than the 4x4 or 4x5.65 filters.
    If I attach either to just the lens, I'm not going to hang anything else from them that will add additional weight. I'll use a cage and rails for any other accessories I may need. If I'm not using my ND filter and want to go small, I use the Tilta. Otherwise I use the Smallrig when I'm caged up.

    This isn’t necessarily a negative comment on these products, but instead a question I am genuinely curious about. Why buy either box only to have to purchase ridiculously expensive glass filters for them? I can buy a matte box for $15 to shade my lens, so why do I need a box to take filters I can’t afford? Is there a cheaper way to get the glass filters or is it just to make my rig look cooler?

    SmallRig, definitely. When you get bigger cameras, everything gets big so, Titla would be a waste of money. I like to future proof things or be ahead. I don't really care about looking cool and sleek.

      I use a variable ND filter with the Smallrig. This it what I do. I mount the 77mm variable ND on whatever lens I'm using, with step up rings as needed. I then use a rail system, usually with my gripped Fuji X-H1 in a cage. I use the next size up adapter ring mounted in the matte box, but without the lens attached. I let the variable ND "float" just inside the matte box. It works a treat.

    I could not disagree more. Size (and consequently weight) is the ONLY advantage for the Tilta. All the other points lead to Smallrig. Two square filters, 2mm or 4mm thickness, secure fit larger lenses, use of circular filters for larger lenses too, sturdier. Well, you catch my drift.

  • @honest_noise
    @honest_noise 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No one stays a videographer for long. Get the smallrig mattebox as it will adapt to the size of cameras you'll be shooting on in the future. The tilta has too short of a lifespan if all it can hold is one filter and only attaches to 77mm stills glass.

  • @therenderer4726
    @therenderer4726 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think both have its targeted users, pros and cons, but if your primary filters are round filters and you want better portability and compact size, the Tilta Mini Matte Box is hard to beat compared to what is available in the current market for the price range. SmallRig should have integrated the feature of internal round filters in their design as this would have broaden their target market and use. Hopefully SmallRig decides to modify their clamp rings and add those inner filter threads in the future! If you do own the Tilta Mini Matte Box, and want to use the larger 82mm filters, then check out the 82mm Clamp Ring Hack we did th-cam.com/video/vjVOdx_b99Y/w-d-xo.html
