In your performance (assuming the deck couldn't have been shuffled first) would a false shuffle have been a good start?

Yeah you could have done a false shuffle if you wanted or anything else to force any of the kings. But the cards were just added as an addition to the trick as you can perform it just with the cracker cards on their own.
