Tempest and 5th edition were the newest expansions when I started playing. This video made me feel like a kid again.

Tempest, Stronghold, and Exodus where my favorite sets. This cycle along with FF7, Play Station, Sega CD Lunar, Lunar 2 Power Rangers, Animaniacs, and EverQuest defined my childhood.

My friends gave me a birthday gift when Tempest came out. My first deck was a preconstructed one, white-red. And I started buying Magic singles right away.

These videos are great! Perfect for us players that got into magic later on to catch up on its deep history. Keep em coming!

Tempest was my favorite set for a long time until Zendikar came out. It just reminded me so much of the gameplay and fast paced adventure storyline from Tempest. I'm incredibly excited for Zendikar Rising the first true sequel to Zendikar.

What? No love for The Jacetis League: Battle for Zendikar and its follow-up?

Tempest is, I think, one of the best examples on how to make a set powerful yet not go too far and not be too miserable*. The set had major influences on all the formats at the time and continued to do so whenever it's been legal. Further, I think just Lotus Petal and Earthcraft are the only cards banned from the set in any format. Many of the cards are still widely played today (something not true of most of the expansions the came before it and after it, the insane Urza block excepted), 24 years later. That's really something. I also think it was probably the best set (Alpha aside) up to that point, which is again something really notable.
*The only thing that stands out as miserable are the color hosers, which are unacceptably punishing by our standards today. However, extreme color hatred was pretty common for the time, as cards like Anarchy in red are....like wow, how was that ever ok? So these fit in well with the time, although Modern would probably be better without any of them.

      Are you kidding me?!?
Seriously, lately I’ve gotten bad feedback for the non sequiturs.
