Yes! Finally! I've ended up watching so many reactions to this video and you're one of the only people to take time to say anything thoughtful. No, better, you've made so many smart observations. You get used to seeing so many reaction videos where they don't really say anything. Love! I've liked and sub'd! PS: this reaction video of yours was the first one I've seen and it was better than nearly all.

Vanilla Ice gets the last laugh. "Vanilla Ice still dependably earns around $800,000 a year today, and more than half of that income is royalties connected to "Ice, Ice Baby". Let that sink in." Ice Ice Baby was the first hip hop hit to reach #1 on Billboard. The dude's net worth as of 2020 was $10 million. Hell. Give me a hit like that that gives me a life-time income any day.

When this song came out, gangster rap was exploding on the scene with NWA and many others that soon followed. Street credibility was a big thing and there wasn't room for an artist that was pure spectacle and showmanship. It's cool to watch all these young guys react to this video and point out his talent. He released his video at a bad time. Today, people are much more accepting and even desiring of entertainers that create themselves into something totally unique and different and who cross supposed cultural boundaries.

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว

I have to disagree you saying the song came out at a bad time... I was 26 in 1990 and every club in Orlando, Florida was playing this song all year long, even a few year later because it was so popular... Now perhaps the black rappers didn't like it, but I say it's because he was a white guy that rapped & danced better than them, sort of like Tiger Woods golfed better in a predominately white sport... So it matters NOT what professionals have to say, but rather what the "MAJORITY" of the general public has to say because it is the consumers that spends, spends & spends is what matters most.

@@lll9416 I disagree. If you were from a beach culture and skated, we liked him. We liked Rappers Delight and a few others. We didn't like gangster rap in the beach cultures . It was angry, violent and sent a message that killing people and police was something to aspire to. That's not why we listened to hip hop. I have always understood the difference between hip hop and Rap, where they differ and where they meet. Go listen to some Bob Dylan, he fought racial injustice and rhymed his ass off but was considered a folk singer in the 60's .Try Blowin in the wind and hear the lyrics. All music crosses in some form.

I grew up with a Mother who attended Civil Rights Rallies. A Father who served his country in Vietnam, he didn't care about your race, color or religion as long as you had his back in a war zone and in the fox hole, just like he did for them. My parents were big proponents that music had no color, it was expressive and food for the soul. I taught my son that. By the time hip hop was overtaken by Gangster Rap, it was disheartening for the two generations who listened as they pleased and enjoyed the music of many different kinds and just enjoyed it.

Robbie Van Winkle (AKA Vanilla Ice) is from Plano, Texas. That video was filmed in Dallas, your keen eye is 1.0.0! His Momma and Daddy are from Texas and moved to Miami just before the video. Suge took exception to his "persona" and the riff started. Suge called him out but VI dodged that bullet (unlike my kindred spirit Tupac... RIP). I'm an old 69 YO white guy that started listening to Sugar Hill/Melle Mel/Grandmaster Flash and watched hip hop evolve to what it is today. The HH industry is MONEY and people kill for that! Like your upfront comments. As some one who danced in Chicago South Side dance clubs in the 80's-90's, this song never got played.. House Music, R and B, with a little rap (New Jack Swing) dominated. Vanilla Ice was viewed as a fake and disliked by most NYC rappers for stealing like Elvis. (although a lot of Black people liked Elvis). "White boy" Vanilla Ice was too good a dancer and rapper to be popular in the Hip Hop community that created the genre at this time. Predominately White downtown/suburban clubs played it. Another thing... The British rock artists shouldn't have complained and sued about somebody stealing their riffs. Queen ripped off Sun rockabilly Elvis; with "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" in 1980 and 1970's David Bowie's "Queen Bitch" steals the guitar riff from 1950's rock n roller Eddie Cochran" "Three Steps to Heaven". Neither one was sued. Cochran couldn't sue because he died in 1960. The Rolling Stones and Led Zepplin made millions off of musical riffs taken from Chuck Berry and various American Blues artists. Except for Berry most died too poor and broke to sue anyone.

Like Ice Ice Baby it hit #1 on Billboard. The name of the song was Rapture. Don't believe me listen to it. th-cam.com/video/pHCdS7O248g/w-d-xo.html At the 1:53 mark of this video Harry begin rapping. She was a co-author of the song. I remember being mesmerized by it when it first came out. The bars were not of any extremely profound psychological or philisophical content, but nonetheless it was rap.
