This episode should have been used as the FIRST appearance of Deputy Warren Ferguson. It could have established the changing of the guards or passing the torch with Barney Fife to Warren Ferguson. Perhaps that would helped the Deputy Warren Ferguson get credibility with the audience more...
Absolutely. Without tact, at the beginning of Season Five, Barney was gone without warning and out-of-no-where, Warren was the new deputy. It was just too much for the audience to accept so suddenly. Hindsight is 20-20. But the fans of the show deserved better. A farewell to Barney episode and a welcome aboard Warren episode might have made a difference. "The Legend of Barney Fife" was too little, too late. To make matters worse, the episodes were now in color. But the primary color was a gloomy green that seemed to form the backdrop of every scene. Yuck!!
Yea, and that way, it's possible he could have been more popular with the audience I was NOT a fan of Barney Fife!! (the first 2 seasons, yes, but when his ego started kicking in; NO WAY)!
I don't know why Don Knotts left the show, but if it was over salary the producers should've offered to double his pay to keep him on. I suppose Jack Burns deserved credit for trying and might even have been a likeable enough character in a different sitcom, but Barney Fife's shoes were just too big to fill.
People give different reasons for why he left. A lot of stories I've heard say, Don thought that Andy would quit the series after 5 seasons and got a different contract, before finding out that the show was renewed. I enjoy the chemistry between the two of them! P.S. If there are any clips of them you would like to see, just let me know! :)
@@dvferyance I will be honest. I think that you're the first person that I've heard make this statement. I think too many folks expected for him to "replace" Don Knotts. I actually liked his character and wish that they would've kept him around as well. Barney and Warren were essentially the same archetype but represented that archetype in 2 different ways. I'm thinking that he would've made a decent transition into RFD as well.
He said in an interview that he was offered a movie deal and had already said he was going to do it. Andy told him he wasn’t going to stay on the air over 5 years. He said he felt conflicted but wanted to keep his word about doing the movies.
It would've been nice if Don Knotts could've returned to the show and Barn would've been made "Chief Deputy". On another note, years later, Jack Burns(Warren) voiced one of the Crash Dummies and they did a commercial where Barney pulled them over for not wearing a seatbelt.
I thought it would have been awesome for Don Knotts and Jim Nabors to have done a spin off where Barney was the sheriff and Gomer was his deputy, I think that would have succeeded well.
I had no idea the office was green. The show has been on in the break room at work for months and I imagined it being tan. I got curious to see it in color
It wasn't the same after Don Knotts left: even when he came back for this -and the other color episodes, it still seemed different. I never understood that then and still don't I never understood that then and still don't...
The only problem with Jack Burns as Deputy warren Ferguson was that he was taking over the place left By Deputy Barney Fife Portrayed by Don Knotts when he left. Don knotts made a great and lasting impression on the show and the audiences connected with him. If Jack Burns Portrayed the First Deputy instead of Don Knotts. He would have been as loved and appreciated as Don Knotts. I Liked Jack Burns on the show though if was a bit difficult to watch without thinking of Don knotts as Barney Fife.
Admittedly as a toddler, I was too young to see and evaluate his performance at the time. But from watching the reruns, I think he provided an adequate replacement deputy with no dislikable characteristics. Now, if you want to character who was awful, dislikable to an extreme and should have never been put on the show, it was Parley Baer's Mayor Stoner.
I feel the same way but I think we are in the minority. Sure Warren was no Barney but at least it made sense for the show to still have a deputy. they should have kept him in the show at least a little longer. And I think the show went even more downhill after Warren. Howard Sprague was my most annoying character. It's why I feel season 6 was the best of the 3 colored seasons.
No. That was Barney's Replacement where they send a deputy to train in Mayberry and learn from Andy and Barney. Barney believes that he is being replaced by the deputy and he fears the worst and quits the force. Then he becomes a vacuum cleaner salesman but he can't get any sales because Andy wants him back.
My five siblings and I are purists when it comes to "The Andy Griffith Show" and we refer to the years after Don Knotts' departure as "Fake Andy". The color process is awful! Everything looks like it's awash in Comet Cleanser green. Barney Fife was the linchpin of the show--the character around whom many of the plots revolved. He played the comic foil to Andy's straight man and the formula was magic. What came after never lived up to what came before. Jack Burns' characterization of Warren got old in a heartbeat. His schtick was stale the moment he opened his mouth--like leftover bits when he was teamed with the much funnier Avery Schreiber. And then there was the later addition of the characters of Howard Sprague and Emmett the Handyman--two more "nothings". And last but not least, there was the continuation (ad nauseum) of Andy's sexless, lifeless, just-going-through the motions relationship with Helen "What a Frump" Crump. Blech!! Too bad he didn't continue life with one of his hotter, livelier girlfriends from earlier in the series' black and white run.
Am in MT Airy for annual Mayberry Days. Memories of all the old characters here here except for Warren. It's sad he is not part of the great shows legacy! Fans couldn't part with deputy Fire's memories...Not Warren's fault.
Warren was never really given a chance to grow and evolve into his character. He was only on like 5 or 6 episodes wasn't he, then he mysteriously disappears
My dad grew up with this show. He still loves the show.
You can really see how much Andy missed having Don around. Great friendship ❤️
So true!
Barney in the old salt n pepper. You can't beat the old salt n pepper.
Plus, it dips just right when he dances.
The fact that Barney and Andy are best friends in real life.

VERY insecure character, who needed constant stroking.
Five or six watchable episodes, max 🎬
Who sti living in 2022 watching 👀 this show the Andy Griffith Show

Andy already looked happy working with Don

I wish at least Jack Burns had stayed. I don't think the show got any better without him. If anything it got even worse.
Don Knotts is like my all time favorite actor!

but who would be the straight man, they're both comics...
Well Jim Nabors was having success on Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. So that was doubtful.
03:05 I about spit out my drink.
Don had a lot of opportunities outside of the show. We couldn’t blame him for spreading his wings a little✊❤️❤️❤️
Wow, grocer, postmaster, tax assessor and NOW newspaper editor! Boy, that Sam Drucker did it all!
Yes!! He was amazing, on and off screen!
I had no idea the office was green. The show has been on in the break room at work for months and I imagined it being tan. I got curious to see it in color
That's how I picture it, too. It's so interesting to see black and white shows in color.
In later color eps it was brown.
So sad Don couldn't have stayed on for a few more years.❤
Warren was super excited to meet his predecessor.
I love Warren, I absolutely adore him
When Barney had his uniform on it Looks really like Andy Had 2 deputy’s working at once
He is the best.
Yes! Don Knotts was amazing!!
HAHAHAHAHAHA

He is a Legend
Yes!!
HAHAHAHAHAHA Don Knotts might have been a legend, but certainly not Barney Fife
RIP Don Knotts (1924-2006) Andy Griffith (1926-2012) And Jack Burns (1933-2020)
Barney reminds me of how Alan harper was in two and a half men or the other way around.

Jack Burns wasn't given a chance. There were other characters on the show less talented and useless, but given recurring episodes
I agree 100%. Such a shame that they bailed out on him too quickly. They never allowed the character to really develop...
I did love him as Warren! I wish he stayed, also!!

Warren was good, but the "huh?", "yeah!" "huh?", "yeah!" bit really got on my nerves!
Jack Burns came to Hollywood with George Carlin.
@Clean Comedy Clips can you do a visit to barney fife please reply
This wasn't the episode where Barney quit and was selling vacuums was it?
No. That was Barney's Replacement where they send a deputy to train in Mayberry and learn from Andy and Barney. No that's episode 34
The Cast member of Five Seconds of S is my relative is one too but small leaded way not Tom Holland?
I think I remember Farley.
Farley Upchurch was played by Frank Cady. Cady played Sam Drucker on Petticoat Junction, Green Acres, and The Beverly Hillbillies.

Floyd’s vibrator?
🤣
I've found my people, The Beatles and Andy Griffith!!
You have to remember that this was before the Charles Manson Generation sexualized everything.
👍👍
He misses Brandon
There was nothing to like about Warren. Barney got on your nerves but he was at least likable.
Barney got on my nerves in the best way 😂
Ooohhh I liked Warren😊

I liked Warren (better than egotistical Barney, that's for sure). I wish he could've stuck around!
Brandon is related to Warren but not that song
Don Rickles would of been a excellent Barney replacement
He actually was in an episode of The Andy Griffith Show! It was called, "The Luck Of Newton Monroe!" 😊 He did a great job with it!
@@cleancomedyclips I remember
I don’t like that they replaced Barney with Goober. Goober acts like a man child. 😬
Um, Don Knotts WANTED off the show
Goober didn't replace Barney. They're in quite a few episodes together. Goober replaced Gomer Pyle.
