Many Transformer fans probably know this by now, but the death of Optimus Prime DEVASTATED young fans back when this movie came out in 1986. In fact, children were leaving the theater in tears because they watched their hero die on the big screen. Some of them were so upset, they hid in their closets and under their beds and just wouldn't come out. It got so bad that parents all around made a bunch of noise, so Hasbro got to work and brought Prime back for a few more episodes.
For Hasbro, cartoons like Transformers G1 were just giant commercials for their toylines. But for the fans... it was more. So much more. And it still is.

He needed an agent to deal with it for him, and overestimated his agent(s) / underestimated the Autobots. Possibly a sign that he was desperate, he was unaware of the matrix's location or possibly even it's continued existence, until Hot Rod grabs it as it's falling from Prime's hand. When Hot Rod grabs it, and it activates, the surge of energy it released was like a lighthouse beacon across the cosmos, something Unicron couldn't help but notice and recognize as the threat it was. Fact is, he might not have ever been able to find a good candidate to do the job. Or perhaps he just anticipated not having enough time to move more carefully on the objective. Someone like Shockwave, or Soundwave might have been a better catspaw to use, instead of Megatron. But getting either of them into a precarious enough situation as Megatron was, where he could leverage their will against their will to survive, would likely have taken more time than he calculated he would have, to deal with the threat of the Matrix.

Don't forget, this is effectively the finale of Season 2 of the original cartoon.
Optimus has been alive for a LONG time by this point.
They didn't kill him off quick in an overall sense. Just in this movie specifically.

    • @fatalwreck9254

Very good point. We need to remember this film represents a milestone shift and change in TF history and canon. Which if u really think about it, it made sense that the events in this movie were made and told in a feature film instead of part of just another 2 part episode from the series. Therefore such a huge change and shift in the transformers history for the autobots and decepticons was such a epic and iconic moment in their history that it deserved to be told in a feature film.
Every King has it’s reign, then he dies. Optimus and his time as commander had lasted millions of years, even before the actual beginning of the Transformers original series. He was a historic and deemed as the most iconic and respected Autobot Leader of all the time. But a new generation, a more advanced future had come since the events of the season 2 finale.
Thus a new and more advanced generation of Transformers were needed to take their story to the next level.

There is an episode where the then-new Aerialbots, who were ambivalent ablut the war, wit 4 of the 5 actively desiringvpeace with Megatron, get sent back in time 9 million years on Cybertron and meet Orion Pax, Optimus's former self, who actually worshipped Megatron, until he is betrayed snd almost killed. Its the Ariallbots who carry Orion Pax to Alpha Trion, wno rebuilds him as Optimus Prime. Alpha Trion is last seen mulling over rebuilding Orio's girlfriend, Ariel, and muses on the name Alita One. Dion, Orion's best friend, is also rebuilt into Prime's brother, Ultra Magnus.
As a result of witnessing Megatron callously use and discard Orion, the Arielbots become enraged and full-heartedly join the Autobot side, just as they find a wsy to return to their notmal time.
In the close of the episode, Prime belatedly remembers the Aerialbots had been seen in his distant past. Ratchet demands to know the joke. "It all started 9 million years ago.." Prime narrates. Ratchet, exasoerated,, mutters "Great, its going to be one of those *long* stories."
So Prime, as his current self, is 9 million years old. Its not known how old Orion Pax was, and some continuities hold Prime was billions of years old as one of the 13 Primes before going through a Jesus arc, choosing to be born as Orion, a common Cybertron dockworker, befire being slain to rise again, ss a Prime once more, the last Prime.

@@MGower4465 Magnum was rebuilt into Ultra Magnus.
There weren't enough parts left of Dion to rebuild him into a super robot like the others.
Hasbro/Takara confirmed that Dion was never rebuilt into any other robot. He's just dead.
Although I suspect Dion's leftover bits were used to build Huffer.
Like maybe there wasn't enough left of him to build a big super robot like Optimus, and Ultra Magnus, but there could've been enough to rebuild him as a little grumpy helper guy for Optimus - a tiny truck guy who can haul Optimus' trailer and stuff.

Even independent of the show, we're all pretty familiar with a War Story, and killing off the generals is always an interesting complication. TF:TM did it as a first act inciting incident rather than as a third act complication, though, which is really rather novel and interesting because now you have two groups who are still fighting even though those responsible for the conflict aren't even on the board anymore.

The soundtrack to this movie is just pure 80's hair metal. It's awesome.
The film itself was a PG in theatres simply because Spike says "Oh shit, what are we gonna do now?". The line was there purely to get the PG rating as PG films got more showings than U films, which is what cartoon movies used to be rated - the line was cut for the VHS home release and so the film was re-rated as U.
Also, the execs saw this film as just a way to refresh the product which is why so many of the season 1/2 characters get murdered. The trouble is, the kids who were fans were really attached to the characters, especially Prime, so this film devastated the fanbase too.

And it could have actually been excellent if hasbro had the courage to allow it to be a full reboot. Now imagine being 6 in 1984, watching Transformers for a couple years and kind of developing love for some of these characters and then you go to the movie in 1986 and seeing this movie unfold like it did. These extreme fights and losses were not a part of the cartoon series. So we were all in shock in the theaters. There were tears. It was a crazy time.

I watched an anime based on Transformers, and even though the main characters didn’t die, very often civilians died. But yes, I did not expect while watching the film that familiar characters would die. The truth is how they died... Like they fought for a long time and then they died from the magnificence of Optimus Prime and the power of Megatron.

The Decepticons tend to be more numerous, more heavily armed, and larger, but the Autobots win by wit and by grit, and by working together while the Decepticons squabble.

You have to understand, the TV show was made as a 30 minute toy commercial. The producers made the movie as a way of clearing the deck of all the old toys that everyone already owned and introducing a bunch of new ones. They didn't realize that kids were attached to Optimus Prime and the others as characters until they got reports of kids crying in the theaters. There was a huge backlash against the movie by parents, which forced the company to resurrect Optimus Prime in the next TV season, and to make changes to the GI Joe movie which had been going to do the same thing.

*WHAT!?* DID YOU GUYS NOT KNOW THAT TRANSFORMERS WAS ORIGINALLY AN ANIME!???*
Transformers is a JAPANESE creation! It started out as a toy line from Japanese toy company Takara (later merged with Tomy to become Takara-Tomy). Then it received a TV anime
**Technically* the "The Transformers" TV series and movie were American creations (and thus technically not an anime, as anime must be Japanese-made animation), intended for American audiences, and we just based on the toys that just came around in Japan. However, Toei Animation did a significant amount of animation, which is why it is widely accepted as a legitimate anime (especially considering its many, definitely 100% Japanese-made sequel series). In Japan, "The Transformers" was called "Tatakae! Chou Robot Seimeitai Transformers" ("Fight! Super Robot Life Form Transformers").
    *1984-1987*
Tatakae! Chou Robot Seimeitai Transformers (Fight! Super Robot Life Form Transformers / The Transformers)
The original, Japanese-commissioned, American-made (with some Japanese animation) series.
    *1986*
Transformers: Mokushiroku Matrix yo Eien ni (Transformers: Matrix Forever / The Transformers: The Movie)
Movie set between the 3rd and 4th seasons of the original series.
    *1987-1988*
    Transformers: The Headmasters
Japan-only sequel to the Japanese dub of the original series.
    *1988-1989*
Transformers: Choujin Masterforce (Transformers: Super-God Masterforce)
Japan-only sequel to the Headmasters series.
    *1989*
Tatakae! Chou Robot Seimeitai Transformers V (Fight! Super Robot Life Form Transformers Victory)
Japan-only sequel to the Masterforce series. This series also definitively marked the divide between the American "Transformers" franchise and the Japanese "Fight! Super Robot Life Form Transformers" franchise.
    *1990*
    Transformers: Z (Transformers: Zone)
An OVA (Original Video Animation, aka. straight-to-DVD release) add-on to Victory. End of "Generation 1."
    *1993-1995: Transformers: Generation 2*
Unlike G1, G2 didn't last long, and wasn't really a series. It was just a short-lived American comic book arc and Japanese toy line. It had a TV series, but it was actually just the original series with slight additions via CGI (which was VERY primitive at the time).
    *1996-1999: Beast Wars: Transformers*
American-made sequel to the original The Transformers TV series.
    *1999-2000: Beast Machines: Transformers*
    American-made sequel to Beast Wars.
*2000-2001: Transformers: Car Robots (Transformers: Robots in Disguise)*
Japanese-made reboot of the Transformers franchise. Ultimately ended up as its own, isolated thing.

If you want to collect some of the OLD Transformers toys, I strongly recommend you look for the Japanese "Diaclone" and "Micro Change" toys. They were the original toys that were re-labeled as Transformers toys for G1.
For example, the original Optimus Prime (Japanese: "Convoy") toy was a Diaclone "Battle Convoy" set. EXACT same toy, with the only change being the "DIACLONE" logo on the trailer being changed to the Transformers logo.

Always cool to see those who never saw this movie, or the original animated series, react to it. This movie is a landmark for the franchise and it takes place 20 years after the first 65 episodes of the cartoon that comprise of 2 seasons. Season 3 is a bit shorter at an additional 30 episodes, but you will notice a dip in animation. There's a reason for this. Toei Doga animated all of Season 1, most of Season 2, and the Movie. However, the break neck production schedule forced Marvel Productions and Sunbow (the co-producers of the show) to out source to a fledgling animation studio, AKOM to finish the work needed for some episodes. They animated most of Season 3, though Toei did return for several episodes as well. As such, Season 3 suffers because of it. However, the storytelling throughout all 98 total episodes and the Movie holds a special place among fans who have grown up with it and love it dearly.

I grew up with Transformers and it will always be my favorite toyline. I’m still to this day collecting them and I’m 47 now :) The toylines that are out there now are even better than the original toys (that still have their charm), and are really aiming for an adult market. This movie has been a classic and certainly ranks amongst my favorite pieces of Transformers animation. If you would like to find out more about the lore of Transformers, you might want to check out the five part opener of season 3: “ Five faces of Darkness”. It picks up the story after the movie, and dives into the history of the Transformers including their creators :) As for your question who is my favorite Transformer: Soundwave is certainly in my top three, but I think my favorite is Scorponok (not from the bayverse, but from the G-1 cartoon). Anyways, enough of my ramblings: great reaction guys! Keep up the great work :)

If you’re interested in why unicron is so afraid of the Matrix it’s because the Matrix contains the essence of Primus who is essentially The Creator God for the Transformers while Unicron is the God of Destruction for the Cybertronians. Essentially Primus and Unicron had fought each other since the beginning of the universe, but Primus devised a way to trick and defeat him basically trapping Unicron in an inanimate form which eventually became a planet and Unicron was able to roam around the Universe gathering energy by consuming planets. Primus realizing this would create the Cybertronians to fight against Unicron but eventually the factions would emerge and while the Autobots might still try to keep towards their original purpose to protect the universe, the Decepticons took a more aggressive approach. Also by the way Primus is Cybertron that is why Unicron wants to destroy it so badly. He essentially wants to kill his own brother

@@philfitnesspt6139 In this show, Primus did create them, just so long ago that it was forgotten while Alpha Trion ruled.
Alpha Trion ruled Cybertron when the Qunitessons first encountered it.
The resulting conflict killed thousands, and the Quintessons took the dead bodies back to Quintessa to rebuild them into Decepticons.
The Quintessons then sent them back to take the planet, and they succeeded. That conquering gave rise to the next generation of Autobots, lead by Optimus Prime eventually.
One clue to this truth in the show itself, is the Decepticons have to refine the Cybertronian energon cubes to ingest it, while the Autobots do not.
While on Earth, both sides have to do it.
Both Galvatron and Rodimus Prime crash again on Quintessa in the show, and the Autobots learn they have to refine the Quintessan energon cubes, while the Decepticons do not.
This is revealed in season 4 of the show when Optimus Prime returns fully to save everyone from an energy that corrupts all of the factions.
One of the steps is to restore Prime. To so, because of corrupted information they seek a Quntessan leader, and they find out that with Prime, it is learned that the Autobots are totally unique to their technology, and the leader cannot do it. The Decepticons originating on Cybertron was a lie told by Megatron, as a means to capture Cybertron easier.

Autobots commercial and decepticons military hardware. The designed a.i. so the machines could build themselves but they became sentient and rebelled. The matrix reveals this to rodimus prime because the matrix is the accumulated knowledge of all autobot leaders so in essence a copy of optimus is inside the matrix. th-cam.com/users/clipUgkxi0rqHQtQARbhuSX4JXW0q5tzTFNbW3Xr?si=RmzQddsvSOX9VMf2 Unicron was built by some genius alien and unicron turned on him and left. The alien had a lab assistant and it isn't said but the animation shows the matrix flying off from the lab implying that the matrix was built as an accumulation of knowledge lab assistant for the alien that then found the autobots and became symbiotic with accumulating their knowledge. Unicron likely feared the matrix because it likely knew the alien creator's self destruct code built into unicron.

'As far as the origin of the Cybertronians go, there are two confusingly different ones.
In the Generation1 continuity, the Quintessons made Cybertronian into a factory planet. They made two types of robot servants: the factory workers (Autobots), and the security/military (Deceptions). As these robots were designed to be more and more intelligent, they evolved sentience and emotion, turning against their oppressive creators. In this continuity, there apparently is no Primus (which brings up way too many questions to cover now). Instead, at the core of Cybertronian is a sentient computer known as Vector Sigma. It has the ability to bring machines to life, granting them sentience and personality. But since Vector Sigma wasn’t introduced until about season 4, exact details of how new Cybertronians are born/built are a bit muddled.'

Some stuff you guys probably missed from G1 Transformers:
~ Deep within the heart of Cybertron lies Vector Sigma - the inspiration for the All-Spark in the Michael Bay movies. While parts of Transformer Canon are incomplete, it is theorized that the Quintessons discovered Vector Sigma and constructed Cybertron around it. The Quintessons created both the 'civilian' Autobots and 'military' Decepticons and, with few exceptions, all were infused with 'life' by Vector Sigma. Any Transformer so infused is said to possess 'the spark'.
~ The Dinobots were constructed on Earth by Spike, Ratchet, and Wheeljack. The original three were Grimlock (the Tyrannosaur), Slag (the Triceratops), and Sludge (the Brachiosaur); once they proved their mettle, Snarl (the Stegosaurus) and Swoop (the Pterodactyl) joined their ranks. Their limited intelligence is due to a combination of being constructed without Cybertonium and not being infused by Vector Sigma.
~ Both the Autobots and Decepticons (led by an Autobot named A-3, later dubbed Alpha Trion) rebelled against the Quintessons, destroying most of them. The (relatively) few Quintessons who escaped Cybertron constructed their new home, Quintessa, and populated it with new 'slaves' - Sharkticons and Allicons - whose systems include Cybertonium (making them smarter than the DInobots) but they, too, lack 'the spark'.
~ There's a deeper undercurrent to the 'trials' held by the Quintessons. While the Quintessons are inherently cruel, their utmost hatred is reserved for any and all Transformers who were part of the rebellion which exiled them from Cybertron - those who were are judged 'guilty' and subjected to a far, FAR worse fate. (Being fed the the Sharkticons is downright merciful by comparison!)

As a kid, seeing Hot Rod with his blasters on his arms was so cool. He quickly became my favorite Autobot. Fast Forward about 30+ Years, and I finally get my hands on MP-22 Hot Rodimus, he even came with a fishing rod. I also learn that the animation for this movie was also handled by Toei Animation, so this movie is technically my first anime.

The reason Megatron stopped being a gun was due to strict toy regulations in the 1990s with guns. Also the size issue both in cartoons and toys. It's hard to play with a full size toy gun fighting a mini Autobot.

This movie plays after the first 3 seasons of the cartoon series and after this movie, there is a season 4 (which is also the final last season of the OG Cartoon).
Spike Witwicky is still a kid in the series before the movie and in this was I think the first time we see him as an adult and also the first time we see his kid Daniel!
Also in the 4th Season they revived Optimus because soo many kids were devastated that Optimus Prime died...and people werent the biggest fan of Hot Rod aka Rodimus Prime because he is kind of to blame that Optimus died in the first place..

I love the obvious joy the two of you had watching this for the first time, having come to Transformers through more modern incarnations. Leaving aside the animation aspect, hearing you appreciate the original characters - their designs and voices - is wonderful.
You also touched on something I've been saying about the stories for a long time - that they should focus on the Transformers, rather than the human allies. I still feel the studios don't believe people will watch unless they include a plethora of human side characters, which undermines the central conceit of the whole brand. Just write a good story that focuses on the Transformers.
And yes, Hot Rod was not to blame!

The Dinobots (my faves) were built following the discovery of some fossils in the volcano where the original base was (the Ark)
They didn't realise they would possess small brains however, but they persevered with them, despite a few occasional mishaps. Grimlock, Slag, Sludge were the original 3, then Swoop and Snarl were added to make the group more balanced (Snarl wasn't in the film for budget reasons)
UK could only get the original 3 as Swoop and Snarl were Japanese and US exclusives at the time respectively. One year i had a good Xmas bonus so i decided i'd finally own all 5, so i got original G1 toys from Japan for a handsome price, and i love them still and they have pride of place on a shelf
Also, Autobot City could in fact become a massive robot, and was renamed Metroplex for the purpose of selling the toy.

  • @zraal3759
    @zraal3759 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

One thing to note that the main difference between the autobots and the decepticons are that the decpticons are military and the autobots are non-military. This disticntion leads to their forms and capabilities. Many decepticons are simply weapon platforms. This is why many have weapons as part of thier body, powered flight systems, and increased cases of the same template being used with some or no differences between individuals. Autobots tend to have unique skills and technologies because they are scientists, engineers, archivists, builders, machinists, analysts, laborers, etc. Though, being part of a faction is also a choice. There are individuals have switched sides. Most notibile is jetfire/skyfire, who chose to switched to autobots, and the constructicons who where brainwashed in the cartoon to the deceptions.
Autobot city is the alt mode of a single autobot named Metroplex. This is also why autobot city seems to be randomly out in the middle of no where. During the events of the movie metroplex is low on energon and his transforming gear is destroyed. He is stuck in alt mode and cannot activate the combat systems.
Intersing note on devistator and the constructicons are that individually the construcicons are some the highest intelegence cybertronions, but when combined their conflicting personalites cause the intelligence of devastator to be one of the lowest. This is why devastator speaks in 3rd person.
There are sub groupings of cybertronions that are in reference to either simple sub faction, set of combiners, and/or shared capabilities and traits. Dinobots are autobots that all have earth dinosaurs as alt mods. Insecicons are depicticons that alt mods are insects. Constructicons are decpicons that can build structures, weapons, devices, etc. that also can combine.
Optimus Prime and Ultra magnus are made with the uncommon cambat template. This why they look so similar. Though, where ultra magnus is oriented toward front line combat, trailer provides armor in bot mode and weapons and more armor in alt mode, optums is oriented toward support, trailer can transform and provide repair, and a fire base and add utility. Where, Optimus was repaired and reformed into the combat template by alpha trion, ultra magnus was constructed using the combat template to begin with. This is a bit of a retcon, well several actually, one of the original toy lines used to create the transformers toy line had two semi trucks a red one and a white one. The red one was sold as optiums. Later, after the movie, the white one was branded as ultra magnus without the armor. I am in favor of these retcons sense it deepens the lore without making a lot of changes.

The reason is that Optimus Prime is voiced by the same actor. Peter Cullen has been the primary guy since the beginning. He's Transformers' own Kevin Conroy and occupies the same position, but to a greater degree as he originated the role. Fun fact, in G1 here, Mr. Cullen also voiced Ironhide. But this series and film was a who's who of 80s voice acting.

For what amounts to an advertising campaign to sell toys to children, they did quite well with the story in the original series and movie. Sadly, killing off nearly the entire G1 line really wrecked the kids they were trying to sell toys to, too the point of parents writing the company and complaing/boycotting the toys. As a 12 year old myself when this went down, man, we had the emotional damage meme going.

This movie has a special place in my heart. I was 8-9 years old and my parents wouldn’t take me to watch it in theaters for whatever reason. But everyone in school talked about it every day. I knew the entire movie beat by beat before I even saw it.
We even used an early VHS camera to make our own version of the movie with our transformer toys mimicking the movie. I remember using a volley ball as Unicron and throwing it at the transformers for the opening planet eating scene hahahah! I still hadn’t seen it when we did that.
This was before Blockbuster and there was one video store in town which had 1 copy to rent. I went there day after day to see if it was in. Day after day I walked from school to the video store. It felt like months (although it probably wasn’t that long since I was a little kid). The day it was finally there it was like Xmas in steroids. It was such a big deal to me. I still remember watching it for the first time. It was so epic.
I will still go on TH-cam and watch it once in a while when I’m depressed about getting older.

You guys should definitely watch the show Transformers Prime. Not only is it the best transformers media to date, but also just one of the best shows of the Cartoon Network era period imo. It’s early 2010s cgi so the animation and models looks very slightly off at the start but the show improves the more you watch and the world building, characters, fights and everything else make up for it. It also focuses mainly on the big robots, and the humans are actually entertaining. Anyway nice video and feel free to ask about Prime or the 1986 movie because I’d consider myself well versed on both of these. :)

I watched this film in the theater the day it came out at Aurora Mall Cinemas 3. Someone who worked there had spilled burnt popcorn and the oil got into the carpet, I can still smell it. The movie wrecked me and when Optimus died there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Kids went in laughing and came out looking like war veterans. I was luckily 11 at the time so I was able to process it better than some of the other kids but it wrecked me. Even watching Prime say "Megatron must be stopped... no matter the cost." in this reaction video STILL got me choked up nearly four decades later. I'm glad it still hits so hard to new viewers as an animated story. Your comments and reactions were fun for someone who's a bit closer to Kupp's age now than to Hot Rod's. Keep it up. "'Til all are one."

All the Transformers animated series and the movie were done in Japan. Something else about this movie is that it was Orson Wells's last movie. He passed away about 6 months after doing his voice role. A movie that came out before Transformers and Akira, which probably has the best Anime Movie old school ever done, is a movie called Macross do you remember Love. You really need to check that movie out. Its full version is on youtube.
