So we are back and this is a little bit of what you would call retro. This movie came out in 1986 in theaters I might add and I literally found out about it this year. This is TRANSFORMERS THE MOVIE 1986. The heroic Autobots defend their homeworld Cybertron from the evil Decepticons. Both factions are seething with anger, and that hatred has blinded them to a hideous menace headed their way. I thought for it to be 1986 it was pretty awesome I enjoyed every minute of it and the story should be made love action it’s pretty dope and UNICRON IS INSANE!!!!

I agree 86 movie is the best, Rise of the beasts I enjoyed however it's not acurate to g1, also Unicron doesn't transform in rise of the beasts and you barely see him which sucked. In addition Optimus was a jobber in most of this movie up until the end. Also G1 prime is gangster he took out an army of deceptions on his own in the 86 movie, meanwhile Prime in rise of the beasts struggled to take down Scourge who is no where near powerful as Megatron. In order to enjoy the movie I had to detach my g1 knowledge other wise it wouldn't have been as enjoyable. The scale of the beasts to the autobots is not accurate also. In beast wars the beasties were way smaller than the autobots. Overall rating I'd give a 3.5 out of 5, which is still better than all the bay verse movies

The Transformers 1986 movie will forever be the best animated motion picture ever made in my mind, watching it for the first time as an adult would be ok but it just can't compare to seeing it through the eyes of a child in the theater barely 7 years old like I did. That has a totally different effect that stays with you the rest of your life at that age.

This movie carried alot more weight for us young fans who watched the TV series back in the 80s. Building rapport with characters and then watching your heroes die was tough. I still rewatch this movie about once a year, it's timeless for me. :)
My Mother was stunned to be watching the carnage unfold, and kept asking me questions throughout the film as her little boy was trying to hold back tears watching Optimus Prime die.
Optimus was an excellent role model of strength, nobility, honor and compassion. A real child hood hero.

When I saw Decepticons blasting Autobots to death really it hit me kind of hard. Then Prime and Megatron have that battle and Prime dies! I almost cried right there in the theater.
Then years later I’m watching “Boogie Nights” and Mark Wahlberg is singing “The Touch…”

This was when they started realising the characters were as important as the toys, and that with good characters, people actually got _attached_ to them. Soon after this, they actually started creating new toys of existing characters, like Powermaster Optimus Prime, and the Classic Pretenders, and they also started trademarking the character names as a matter of course so they could continue to reuse them.

    • @mr.osclasses5054
      @mr.osclasses5054 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@Brickerbrack The Powermaster side of things was based off the Japanese continuity that continued when the U.S. version stopped in 1987/88 right as they introduced the Headmasters. Pretenders was just an attempted cash grab because they were kind of trying to revive the brand after the show ended because of making the huge mistake of killing off Optimus.

As mentioned, many kids in the 80's were traumatized by the Death of Optimus Prime. there were LETTER WRITING campaigns (this was pre-internet) with complaints. It was assumed that "killing" robots would be less traumatic than killing humans, and they underestimated the emotional attachment to the charcaters. As a result they rushed a two part episode of the animated series where Optimus was resurrected

    "Prime!"
"One shall stand, one shall fall."
"Why throw away your life so recklessly?"
"That's a question you should ask yourself, Megatron."
Fun Fact: The Blu-Ray special edition of this movie features an audio commentary by Nelson Shin (director), Flint Dille (story consultant), and Susan Blu (voice of Arcee).
Final Bow Fact: This was Orson Welles' final film before his death on October 10, 1985 at the age of 70. He recorded his lines five days prior, on October 5. This was Scatman Crothers' final film before his death on November 22, 1986 at age 76.
Final Countdown Fact: At the movie's beginning, when the Autobots are taking off on their ship, Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen) orders Cliffjumper for a countdown. Cliffjumper was voiced by Casey Kasem, who was the host of America's Top 40 Countdown for many years. This was obviously a little joke added by the writers, considering we didn't need to hear a shuttle countdown, and any character could have done this.
Arcee's Journey Facts: One of the original demands of the Transformers toyline and cartoon series was that no female Transformers could appear, as the toys were marketed strictly towards boys. However, writer Ron Friedman fought hard to include female robots in the Transformers lore, as his daughter was a huge fan of the franchise. This led to the creation of Arcee (Susan Blu), a female Autobot debuting in this movie, as well as a number of other female characters introduced during season 2 of The Transformers (1984). Ironically, despite being one of the movie's feature characters, no toy of Arcee was produced during the entirety of the original Transformers line, though at least one rejected prototype was designed. Arcee became the most famous female character in the Transformers brand, and numerous incarnations of her appeared in various other cartoons, comics, movies and toy series, but this was only in 2014, 28 years after her introduction, that Hasbro finally released a toy based on this movie's design.

My older brother took me to see it when it opened. The audience we saw the movie with had a ball. I had a feeling that Hasbro dropped the ball by killing off most of the Season 1 cast to sell more toys, and REALLY screwed the pooch by including Optimus Prime on their hit list. Hasbro didn't understand what Optimus Prime meant to their audience. Sunbow & Marvel, however, DID and argued against Hasbro's decision to no avail. It took tons of letters from infuriated parents to get the toy company to finally change course.

Definitely the best Transformers movie! What you didn't experience that most of us commenting have was the 2 seasons of the show before the movie came out. I watched those but did not see the movie until I was in my 20's as I told myself I was "too old" for cartoons back in 86 LOL. In the 1st 2 seasons, no one died. The lasers just bounced off and they came back week after week. The massacre on that ship up to the death of Optimus Prime was SO UNEXPECTED back then. No TH-cam or FaceBook... or even MySpace to warn us LOL. I may have gotten something in my eye when Optimus died. They did that so well. What I was happy about the new movies was that they were able to have Peter Cullen voice Optimus Prime. To me he is the one and only. I also remember in the 1st bay movie they did use the line "one shall stand, one shall fall". That gave me goosebumps even if I wasn't near as excited about the movie itself. th-cam.com/video/XA6GAEoL6RQ/w-d-xo.html Glad you guys got to experience the true original!

There is a point in the movie where Galvatron tell the Sweeps to exterminate Ultra Magnus and you see a single connected beam come out of the 4 of them but when it cuts to Ultra Magnus its multiple blast that blows him up. This is because originally the Sweeps were to grab each of Ultra Magnus's limbs and pull him apart. Which is why when the Junkions put Ultra Magnus back together it only shows them grabbing his 4 limbs and the torso. But the producers thought it was too brutal to just have him pulled apart so they changed to it him just blowing up.

I was amazed that it was playing in the base theater and it was filled with other Transformer Fans. At the risk of sounding soft many of us were MAD when Optimus died. Loved seeing Percepter, the microscope. Blaster with his own cadre of cassettes and always good to see Grimlock and the other Dinobots. Had mixed feelings about Hot Rod becoming Rodimus Prime. This is possibly the best transformers movie ever. It’s got the great 80’s music, cheesy one liners, great story. I remember watching this when it came out and honestly think I did cry when prime died. This movie was released in during the tv series. From what I remember reading prime was not supposed to be revived in the tv show. But they changed their minds after so many people complained about his death.
The one thing I do like about the new movies is that they got Peter Cullen on board to voice prime.

The movie wasn't initially PG while in the theaters, that little cuss gave them a PG-13 rating, which was done on purpose so the movie wouldn't be resigned to just matinee screenings (typical for childrens movies at the time) and could be seen by a wider range of audience. It didn't work, the movie still flopped in the theaters, and the cuss was removed for the VHS release of the movie bringing the rating back down to a PG. It's only been relatively recently restored in DVD and Blue-ray copies.

What toy makers thought was a good way to bring in a new toy line was a traumatic event for children; to the point of mother’s calling and complaining how could you show this to a child.
So much so that the ending to the G I Joe animated movie following this film was significantly changed in hopes to avoid the same backlash.

As I recall, The Transformers started with the Autobots trying to leave Cybertron on a giant ship called the Ark due to an energon shortage and losing the war to the Decepticons. Megatron’s forces raided the Ark and the battle caused the Ark to crash on Earth and “kill” everyone. Then millions of years later, a volcano awoke the Ark’s computer Teletraan I, which scanned the area and then proceeded to rebuild all of the Transformers on the Ark in the forms of tech it found out around it, mainly vehicles.
The cartoon was pretty standard as cartoons go, an new source of region is found, evil loses, good triumphs, no one ever dies. Then this movie came to replace the gen 1 Transformers with the next, and so most of the gen 1 Transformers died, pretty easily and without much fanfare (except for Optimus Prime).
The death of Optimus caused such a fuss with fans that in the gen 2 cartoons they resurrected him.

It's a shame that the show fell apart right after this in s3, cuz Hot Rod becoming Rodimus Prime i thought really worked in the film. As a Decepticon kid, i got to see starscream finally win for like 5 minutes... and Megatron becoming a slave was always a head trip to me due to his unshakeable pride throughout the original show

So the still going cartoon show brought him back to life half a year later. Plus Hasbro was shocked that kids were so pissed so many Generation One Autobots died. Hasbro thought it was just killing off old characters to make new ones to get new toys out.

This was essentially a episode of the original cartoon, so the events carried over to the show. Unicron's head becomes Cybertron's new moon and Unicron is still alive just no a threat. Galvatron of course returned but he suffered brain damage and went crazy. As for television release the last season of the original got it's budget slashed! They ended up going from a 13 episode order to just 5, then to just 4 kids shows in the 80's where expected to have seasons with either 13-26 episodes or 65 Episodes. To pad out the dismal run of 4 for season 4 the movie was cut into 5 episodes of the series.
Hasbro had no clue how important Optimus Prime was to kids at the time, but for a lot of kids it was traumatizing to see a hero, even a robot, die. The cancelled plans to release he 86 G.I.Joe the movie to theaters, ot got the a VHS release then the 5 episode cut treatment, and recorded extra lines because it too was going to kill off he good guys leader, animation was already done but the added lines to have him go into a coma instead and recover by the end.
It also resulted in Optimus being brought back to life in the show, and Prime has treated death like a revolving door since. Dieing and coming back over and over.

  • @alunrundle162
    @alunrundle162 ปีที่แล้ว

The traumatic effect of Optimus Prime's death is the reason they inserted a line about the GI leader going into a coma - NOT dying - in the following G.I. Joe movie.

05:46 Glad you are "sold" on this movie. It is one of my all time favorite movies. Laserbeak, you can hear the name mentioned in the first live action Transformers movie. He was a little spy robot in that, about insect sized, and did not make it long. 06:30 it seems that all transformers can fly to some extent, but the Decepticons, with the exception of a few, were full on jets and actual air power. 06:45 The sound track is the GOAT. :) 07:50. Well, not exactly whatever, but there is a variety of things these transformers turn into. The point is, if a car, plane, microscope/telescope/gun, cassette player they were "more than meets the eye". It was a way of stealth against each other and to hide from the humans of Earth at times. 09:09 as a kid when Blaster ejected all those cassettes that was amazing because up till then that was not a thing till then! (yah more toys!!) 09:30 was a renouned fast talker of the time. Did the micro machine commercials among other things. 34:19 as a kid we kinda knew this was happening before we saw it in theaters. Especially with commercials talking "soon there will be a new leader... RODIMUS PRIME". Kinda a spoiler. :P 16:49 yep, couldn't do that on regular broadcast television. In a kids cartoon at least. 27:30 yeh in the Transformers marvel comic series that takes place after this movie Rodimus would come to regret throwing Galvatron into space as he did not know where he went. Actually gave Rodimus some anxiety. 28:30. I love that last death wheeze. 30:15 It was amazing as a kid. And it holds up well because the characters are enjoyable and the story is intense but really great. A real hero's journey for Hot Rod and Rodimus. 32:00 The fade to black... interesting.

This was one of the most traumatic films for us 80s kids, because for many of us, it not only was the first time we'd ever seen cartoon characters die, but they also killed off every character we loved (all to sell a new line of toys). The studio was bombarded with hate mail and protests, because you had thousands of kids across the country traumatized. It got so bad that they actually forced the studio to bring Optimus Prime back, in order to quell the anger.

Robotech is the first animated series that I know of that had an inter-racial relationship, Roy Focker and is a relationship with the bridge officer Claudia Grant, and that was a year before Transformers the Movie.
Though I am disappointed with the editing that Harmony Gold did to make Robotech, which was originally 3 completely unrated anime that they edited together into one, at least they didn't censor the death. Roy Focker wasn't the only person to die in the series, just the only main character, you see other die constantly in the background in battle, I remember a scene where the Zentraedi are attacking the SDF-1 and you see an explosion and you see some guy's head fly off in the background.
