      Actually Hoosier makes racing lawn mower tires. They would work great. Also they make a slick for that mower. I use to race lawn mowers in the USLMRA . I’m going to build another one. And race in another big series Calle the National Lawn Mower Racing Association. It’s as big as USLMRA. The series runs nation wide like nascar.

    John has his head in the right place. Get some weight on the rear, get the steering worked out, and THEN put better gearing in it for more top end. One thing I would consider is cutting some slots in the front grill to let air in to cool the motor better, and maybe some road rrace style tires. I think that mower could run with the renal cars easy with those mods. Awesome content you guys, keep up the grerat work

      @goosenotmaverick1156 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      If you add too much weight and improve grip, it may tighten it up too much I'd think. I'd upgrade the grip before making weight changes and then use the results from that, to dictate how much weight to move/add. Just my thoughts.

    • @kasuraga
      @kasuraga ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@goosenotmaverick1156 Tires first, weight next, sounds like a good plan. You want a better compound to bite into the road before you add a weight penalty by using balast.

      @@goosenotmaverick1156 As a "part-time mechanic" on a Formula Ford crew, we would always (try to) change one thing at a time. Otherwise, it leaves you uncertain what made the changes in handling/performance/whatever. The other important point was to ALWAYS keep records of what you've done with each change. We didn't have a large budget. We were just some friends racing on weekends in SCCA and having a ball. That "racing go-kart" looks like an awful lot of fun!! The 450 is a torque monster for what it is; they pull hard from 4k up to 8k rpm. Drop to a smaller rear sprocket to make 5th and maybe even 4th useful; there's a reason cars are trending toward more gears rather than fewer. Leaving it in 6th all the time is letting you drop out of the powerband when you slow down.
    The GS450 was known for having an abnormal amount of powertrain lash; this was intentional. They shift VERY well without the clutch. Use this to your advantage. Shifts will be faster and sharper; use the lever to load the shifter against the next gear and just roll off/on the throttle. It'll drop into the next gear and away you go. This works in both directions; upshifting and downshifting.
    The stock carbs do NOT like anything aside from the stock airbox and factory twin pipe exhaust. Spend some more time dialing them in or swap to a different set of Mikunis.
    For the heavy steering, you might consider switching from a wheel to a wider yoke. That will increase precision and decrease effort... And make it easy to build a rudimentary paddle shifter a la the Ducarti, which will allow you to better take advantage of the clutchless shifts.
    It's got potential fellas, it just needs some dialing in.

    You guys had it pretty right. The gear ratio really kills the top speed, but the wheels do too. They're just another "gear" but one that interacts with the road instead. Motorcycle wheels are way larger and the outside travels a lot farther at the same RPM as the inside. You could maybe add larger wheels, but you'd have to lengthen or widen the back somehow, add clearance for your elbows. I think it's an awesome drift machine though and maybe that's it's calling. Keep up the awesome work guys!

    On the Mower-kart- remember that the bike that the engine came from had a 25" tire with, say, a 10" sprocket. If you have a 16" tire now, a good way to pick a sprocket is to start around 6-7 inches. That would give you about the same ratio the bike had. Maybe ratio up a little bit since it's heavier and won't need to go as fast. At least then you'll be able to use more than just 6th gear.

    Just a quick observation guys,
    but at the end of your last, and longest run,
    I would say that at the very least, your Suzuki powered lawnmower has over cooked your tires,
    and, if you are able to,
    I would suggest that you replace your tires !
    ( a full set )
    no cutting corners on this one guys !
    The next heat cycle your tires will only be harder !
    ( less grip )
    You will be amazed at what a new set of tires will do for you !
    Nice run, you will only be faster with more track time !
    You will start to know when your shift points are due, and you are going to get better at learning your corner apexes !
    That little kart has the potential to be an absolutely wicked kick-@$$ kart ! 😎
