  • Do you often wake up between 3 and 5 am? If so, you’ll probably feel tired the next day and then the same happens the next days. Getting a good night's sleep plays a major role in our daily performance and mood. The complicated thing is that these situations can turn into cycles easily, and have a huge, negative impact on your performance and mood. To avoid getting stuck in one of these cycles, or help you break the cycle, let's look at why you might be waking up at 3-5 AM every day.
    Speaking of sleep, previously, we also made a video on what your sleeping position says about you: • What Your Sleeping Pos...

    Personally my problem didn't start until menopause. I used to sleep like a log. I've tried all these things mentioned, so I pretty much think hormones are to blame. Tons of women I've talked to say the same thing. Never getting the same good sleep they had pre-menopause. I have a very physical and demanding job and it is very hard to function with 6 hours of sleep for me. I literally always feel tired.🥺

Menopausal issues were gone within a few days. Slept great. Anxiety gone. Didn't even get sick during that time. Unfortunately the symptoms came back. 8 yrs later and still have them. I’m seventy two. I exercise, walk and eat well. I don’t smoke or drink. I go to bed at 10 pm and I fall asleep almost instantly, but wake up any time between 2 am to 4 am. It may be a full bladder coupled with thirst, or just no reason at all. If I wake up at 4 am or later, I consider myself lucky. I suppose that my experience is not necessarily unique.

    Yes, I commonly wake up at 4am. But I have a wonderfully rested feeling and use it for quality quiet time, usually doing something mentally productive, and then go back to sleep at about 6am to 8am. This is called "sleep splitting". It's not for everyone, but it works great for me once I realized that I can - and should - just allow myself to go back to sleep again after a couple of hours.

      Same here. I have heard it called biphasic sleep. I started doing this in the early days of covid and have continued since I still work from home. I wake up around 4:30, sit up until 6 and then sleep until around 8. The “second sleep” as I call it is the most restful sleep I ever get. It is like the time between the two sleep periods is a time to reset my body and emotional state and then I sleep really well.

    When I was in the Peace Corps, I was living a simple life without electricity, no screen time because *no screens*, reading voraciously, experiencing and learning new things every day, spending time in nature and exercising, feeling meaning and purpose every day, and going to bed when it got dark and waking up with the sun. Best sleep of my life. Living now in a very different reality of modern life and the stress of city living, I don't know if I will ever get that back again. But I am trying.

      This sounds divine. So simple but yet so hard. If I go to bed at eg 8pm, I'd be awake at 12.30am..... And be wide awake! I'm waking up naturally, between 3am and 4.30am these days, which I love. I've left work and moved house and my life is so different. - I feel like I'm in heaven. I just need to spend my early mornings really productively, before I fall back to sleep at 8am...

    Common causes of insomnia include stress, an irregular sleep schedule, poor sleeping habits, mental health disorders like anxiety and depression, physical illnesses and pain, medications, neurological problems, and specific sleep disorders. But the worst and unavoidable reason is AGEING. Yes. as we age we sleep less and we sleep lighter.

      I’m 63 years old and my Apple Watch says I do not breathe deep enough when I sleep. My O2 readings are usually between 90 and 94%. I think I wake up in the night, first to go P, because of pain as well, and sometimes I think I just wake up so I can move around a little more and get oxygenated. First two things I’m sure of. Does anybody know if dropping O2 levels wake us up or not? And how low is too low for your O2 level according to your Apple Watch.

      70 years old and I’ve learned to enjoy my night owl ways despite the negative portrayal of insomnia. I get up for a couple of hours, read a book or play chess, watch a video or two, or check social media and news that may have developed. Then I’m tired again and I go back to bed to actually sleep an hour or two, up with first light of dawn every morning. Don’t want to waste the time I have left. I’ve survived this far with minimal sleep from my wacky job as an ER doc of 35 years, so I ain’t gonna change now. Thanks for your video and views, but I disagree! Low blood sugar might describe why I woke up around 5 am today utterly starving! I do have trouble sleeping and always have, but I recently learned I am sensitive to sound. I've been wearing comfortable ear plugs (Loops for anyone interested) and that has drastically helped me fall asleep and stay asleep. Instead of hearing every tiny sound, I hear my own breathing which helps me focus on that instead of my thoughts and I find it soothing. I still hear loud sounds like my alarm, but I don't wake to the sound of birds at 4-5 am anymore or my cat running around at 3. Playing with sound, light, and other stimuli might help some people figure out what wakes them up

You need a cool room and dropping body temperature to sleep well; children or pets disrupting sleep. For this reason I do not allow children or pets in the room where I sleep. A lot of these feel to me like they are targeting those having difficulty getting to sleep to start with, rather than those waking in the middle of the night who maybe have no trouble at all falling asleep. This is the problem I seem to have, I fall asleep quickly, usually within minutes of putting my head on the pillow (sorry to those who don’t!), but, it seems to me that after around 4 hours of sleep I naturally wake up and then struggle to get back to sleep, and it often feels that no sooner have I managed to get back to sleep, then the alarm wakes me up, and I feel grogy.

      @Lawrence Dunn - you should look into Bi-phasic sleep. Since the dawn of mankind people would go to sleep when it became dark (first sleep) then wake between 11-2am get up and read, mend, check on livestock, visit neighbors, etc. When they became sleepy they would go back to bed and sleep til dawn. Sleeping 8 hours straight is more of a modern idea once electricity was wide-spread.
      You should try it. It will lower your anxiety of not being able to fall back asleep. However, no screens like phones, laptops, or TV during the awake period.

      Depends on your age. You could have prostate issues. If you drink milk and you are male the hormones in it can cause it. If you are like me , and drink too much of anything all day and especially within a couple hours of bed. Make sure to lay off water, juice etc 2 hours before bed and no caffeine, it can act as a diuretic. Just take sips now and then before bed if your throat is dry. If you have to get up and go, try not to turn any lights on. And dwell on how comfy bed was. Don't start thinking about issues. Get back in bed, pray in your head thanking God for things. Or imagine peaceful places or things. Relax each part if your body one part at a time. Breathe slowly . Maybe have a fan on for white noise even facing away from you. Turn it on low or medium. A big box fan or large standing oscillating fan makes the best white noise. Concentrate on the noise. Name the presidents in your head. Do the alphabet backward in your head. Anything that will keep your mind off anything stressful. If you still can't sleep, try a cup of hot tea. Try to just sip it slowly. Something with a comforting flavor. Nothing zingy like lemon or mint. Try cinnamon or chamomile etc. Read a book which will always make you sleepy. Tea I like is Bengal spice. No caffeine all herbal. It tastes great. It's soothing. Can add a chamomile bag in with it. You can even serve it cold if you prefer. Sorry so long but I woke up at 4 and I'm waiting to get sleepy too. TH-cam abs mindless games with the blue light blocker on and the light on the phone turned down super low helps me unlike some . But keep the blue light blocker on. It's not good for your eyes and even 3 ir 4 hours before bed it can keep you awake. Your brain thinks it's the daytime. Keep lights dim or off in the evening. You can also listen to a bible app or a book or a TH-cam video that's calm turned low. Be careful of subliminal message vids but some rain vids or such are ok. If nothing else try melatonin then ask your dr. Lunesta and Ambien are bad. If you have a stressful life beyond the norm, try to turn it off in your head ir see what you can do something about. Just don't go offing someone lol. If you have kids put them to bed at least an hour or two before you go to bed. You are the boss not them. And do not watch news before bed. Watch peaceful things. Stuff on hobbies or cute animals etc. Lots of youtubers have soothing voices no matter the subject. As long as the subject doesn't bother you.

    I've always had trouble sleeping any time before midnight. Not sure when it started, but at least since high school. It's just quieter. I go for walks at night when there's less traffic and no worry about sunburn. I'm introverted, so me being the only one awake made me feel more recharged. It made it hard to wind down, even when I tried going to bed earlier. The only times I seem to be able to go to bed early is when I get sick XD

      They're definitely not psychic, they aren't fortunetellers.

    • @faiIsafe
      @faiIsafe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @The Emo Trans Bimbo well it's hard to detect sarcasm from people on the internet because tone doesn't really exist so you could have at the very least put /s at the end or edit it so it "LoOks LikE ThIS."
      also, it's woooosh. with four o's. you could have simply said that instead of going on a tangent :) 👌

    • @faiIsafe
      @faiIsafe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @The Emo Trans Bimbo Well some things on the internet don't seem far-fetched.
      Those people might not mean for it to be serious and since you don't know anyone's tone on the internet, that can lead to miscommunication. That's why they use /s or using the capitals everywhere in the words notion so people know it isn't true.
      It's a fundamental value in communication, you'll need to know when someone is sarcastic or serious otherwise that can completely change the mood of the conversation.
      It's completely why I thought you were being serious in the first place, so we were both at fault.
      So root cause: You didn't mean to be serious, that caused miscommunication up until now.
      Is that fine with you?

    I worked an early started & awakened at 0445 to get suited & booted & out the door off to work. I filled my coffee mug & drank this as I caught the train to work. After work I attended University at night - 5 nights a week so I was on a 14 hour day until I hit the sack. It was a routine I mastered for 12 months & found I had 1-2 hours more a day. On the train - I read my mail as I commuted the 30 minutes to my workplace.

      The military did experiments to see how much sleep they needed in combat, and the answer was 3 hours. So don't sweat it. I routinely only get 4 hours, then toss and turn for 2-3 before getting up. But I feel more awake than my wife. If she wakes up just 1 minute from her 7 hours, it is like the end of the world to her.
