- Review of Warlord Games' Pike and Shotte. Overall verdict: works well as a toolbox and simple rules for quick play, lack of distinct historical detail might turn some off. On the other hand the simplicity makes it easy to house rule.
Great review. I completely agree about the ‘rules toolbox’ approach. P&S and Black Powder are very easy to tweak to get things to work how you prefer.
Thanks for watching, some people like to complain about the lack of depth in Warlord rules but like you I just view it as an opportunity to modify them to suit the scenario or conflict you are trying to represent
I appreciate it's been a while since this review. I've used the free to download rule 'Victory without Quarter' for the British Civil Wars and enjoyed it. Card based and very simple. I'm looking to use them for 17th century Eastern armies too.
Simple is good for building historical scenarios, thats why I like Pikeman’s Lament as well.

The Perry Miniatures mercenary sets for the early Italian Wars are worth checking out too. There are also a lot of quality 15mm ranges of Landskneckts from Khurasan and Old Glory too

I'm thinking of using the Sharpe Practice approach to activations, assign each commander a number and then draw from a deck to see which one comes out, but without the Tiffen, that way all commanders get to go but it doesn't follow the "you go/ I go" approach of old.
That is an interesting approach, I have not played Sharpe Practice. If I can get to gaming again I might try that
Nice review. My friends and I have played several 15mm 30 Years War games using these rules. I highly recommend the Last Argument of Kings, which you reviewed, as well as the ECW supplement, To Kill a King. I'd edited and laid out a player's aid sheet, that helps with running the game.

@@Corvinuswargaming1444, you’re welcome. I’ll have to look up your reviews about Pikeman’s Lament. I’ve yet to play them…once the pandemic is under control. We love Lion and Dragon Rampant. I created unit stat cards that I think help the gamers play the game.

@@Corvinuswargaming1444, Saracens, excellent! One of my gaming friends has painted 15mm Ottomans which you can see in my slideshow th-cam.com/video/zOq9fEETE50/w-d-xo.html. He’s painted a lot of 15mm Ancients, too.
Lion Rampant predates Dragon Rampant and other rules released by Osprey by Dan Mersey, and I think that those rules, after Lion Rampant, are better edited. Except for the magic spells and creatures, Dragon Rampant is similar to Lion Rampant. I’ve a 5 page summary of the LR and DR rules that I’d be happy to share with you.

Are the rules fluid for those who want to play with smaller scales like 6 or 10mm?
I don't think it would be a problem. The rules have a short page in the back about using other scales, but you'd have to scale down the measurements and ranges yourself. Otherwise the core mechanics can work with any scale I think

@@newenglandpatriot4069 no problem. Sort of like I said in the video where others might find the rules a bit bland I see it as easy to modify for specific scenarios while keeping the gameplay competitive.
Really confused about what is a unit. For example a regiment of two musket blocks with a pike block in the middle is that one unit or three?
It would be 3 units, but I usually house rule it into one to represent the Spanish tercios for example. But as the rules are written it is 3 individual units commanded activated by their battalion commander.
Do not agree about artillery. Artillery of the era was unreliable and firing on fortifications is not open-field combat. The concept that they could even maneuver the thing into place should be considered an achievement alone much less fire it accurately. Most guns once set done were not easily moved without good reason. Accuracy was in terms of number of barns off target, not dinnerplates.
You are correct and a warning should have been made in the book - this era is EXPENSIVE to get into - the sheer number of figures required is a serious consideration and not many people have the resources that the authors seems to have. It astounds me that anyone can afford that level as most people have to go to work everyday.
Artillery was used quite effectively by the Ottomans both in the field and in siege, primary sources speak to this. We can also extrapolate that European states had similar capabilities.
@@Corvinuswargaming1444 Yep Ottoman's artillery did very well in field battles like Chaldiran .eg but acturally it was made by light or medium guns shot in short range. So I think the shooting value of "3" for short range fairly represents the effectiveness of artillery during that era. But if we take siege of Constantinople or Malta as examples, the long range shot from all kinds of artillery seemed not that effective eg. the walls of Constantinople survived from consecutive bombard for several days. 😄
@@westwang8726 those were exceptional sieges and are also a century apart. You cannot evaluate Ottoman artillery or their military performance by picking out the famous battles and making extrapolations, which is far too common in popular histories about them. I have discussed this topic elsewhere on this channel and read the primary documents constantly.

@@gabrielnguyen5580 Plenty of rule sets for eighteenth century and Napoleonic era use artillery at the 28mm scale and they seem playable, not sure why that is necessary for this period
