My First Custom Super Mario Bros. Wonder Level

- I spent several days of my life writing a custom Super Mario Bros. Wonder level by hand, and I do mean writing because there is no level editor for the game currently so I wrote the level code by hand.
How I made this: • How I Made a Custom Su...
The level is called "Flip Block Flock" because it uses flip blocks and two types of bird enemies. The design is fine I suppose, I purposefully used simple mechanics to make the process as smooth as I could, but even still there's definitely a lot of stuff I would've done differently if I could mess around with elements more easily.

I've gotten a lot of requests to explain how I made this so here's that: th-cam.com/video/2M6SYoESzNA/w-d-xo.html
For anyone who doesn’t know, making levels in this game is EXTREMELY tedious right now because of the way the ground is placed, which is by utilizing a series of x, y, coordinates.
There is no level editor, no animated gui to help guide you. This level is insane. Well done!
It's tedious now, but once an editor is made that handled those coordinates for you, it'll actually be a lot less tedious than most editors including Mario Maker because all that stuff just gets filled in automatically instead of having to fill everything by hand (unless you've got a fill tool in your editor).
For what we have now though, this was a lot of work and very well done. Lot of patience required to build it like things are right now.
@@RadzPrower It's probably gonna soon be as easy as the NSMB series, since these games are VERY similar.
It's still amazing we figured out how the work so fast, I'm sure we'll have an Editor tool in no time
By that do you mean:
- each individual tile is stored alongside its coordinates (dumb)
- the tiles are in a big list
or
- the ground is made of distinct objects with positions and sizes like in super mario world
or something else?
@@Blaineworld You basically draw lines and it just fills in underneath or above it with the fill texture and that's it. Design by drawing shapes instead of with tiles or objects.
Modding the game aside, this is a very very very impressive show of level design. The gameplay integration is extremely creative and clever, and really does emulate Nintendo’s own philosophies
I know for a fact they would not approve of this though.
This is for sure a creative and inspired way if designing level. It combined to mechanics from previous levels and continues to iterate on them with increasing difficulty, it's definite following Nintendos ideals I'm game design
1:35 You know it’s a Rimea level when there’s a midair pipe entrance 😎
I was so happy to see there were a few in the vanilla game as well lol
it's insane how fast you modded the game. Nintendo blacklist any% speedrun
lmfao
This aged kinda well unfortunately
Rimea, I'm genuinely blown away by your first custom level for Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Not only are you one of the pioneers in this endeavor, but you've executed it with exceptional skill and creativity. Your level design is on point, with just the right mix of challenges and surprises, making it a joy to play. It's clear that you've put a lot of thought and effort into this project, and your dedication shines through. I'm eagerly anticipating more of your custom levels in the future, and I'm sure the Mario community is too. Keep up the fantastic work!
is everything you say AI generated now
only when im lost for words :-)
LOL.
😭
Couldn't have said it better myself. Rimea is way too goated at this.
I'm now convinced that the main reason for Mario Wonder's existence is to be modded. IMAGINE ALL THE POSSIBILITIES
there are so many enemies and gimmicks with so much unused potential in this game that if they were used to their full potential we’d have 10 times the levels we have now of course *they’re* gonna mod it
we? you're not.@@CMan185
The kaizo levels are gonna get crazy
I can’t really imagine. But I can….. WONDER.
I’ll see myself out….
I WONDER what people will make 😂😂😂😂
Delivering as always
😉
It's actually unbelievable how good this is. There's so much detail in the level, it looks like a real Super Mario Bros Wonder level, and writing levels by hand (since there is currently no level editor) is a crazy amount of work. Incredibly well done!
Not many likes?
i really hope that if theres a mario maker 3, that they incorporate wonder into that game since its one of the most creative and beautiful styles we've ever gotten. This level you made too for the most part genuinely looked like it should have been in the main game
Wow, this is amazing! The level design is barely distinguishable from an actual nintendo-made level. Great job!
barely distinguishable is a major overstatement. it’s good but it ain’t that good.
@@buutarddno it does look official tbh
@@buutarddthis feels true imo, theres alot to be improved on
@@jawad.p No it doesn’t…look at levels in wonder like blooms of the desert skies or the final boss…this is not even close to the design levels of wonder
Why not? To me the only thing that could be considered a giveaway is the use of ground pound cancels, everything else feels pretty accurate.
Great interactions with the bird enemies projectiles and the flipping blocks. The part I’m most excited for are levels like this with great creativity, only they are longer. I personally enjoy longer 2d platformer levels. Great job!
And w/o a timer we can have some pretty girthy levels
Custom levels like this are EXACTLY why we should have a SMBW style in the next Mario maker, there are so many possibilities with the new enemies and obstacles!
This is insane. I can only imagine what crazy things people will end up making. Might be a bit too soon to imagine NSMBW levels of modding potential, but this surely makes it look promising.

After Luigi's groundpound, the flower was like: "Well then."
Did you know that if you die in front of a flower, they will say "well then"
There are genuinely some really clever interactions in play with the design here, I like it a lot.
This is impressive, especially without a level editor. Once an editor is made, modding will go crazy.
Also, I believe this is the first custom level to use a wonder flower, so good job on that!
As a huge SMW fan, I'm excited for the possibilities for Mario Wonder
Oh my. I'm surprised someone has already managed to mod Super Mario Bros Wonder to add in a custom level! When I initially saw this in my TH-cam video recommendations, i thought it was a fan animation.
I was not only reminded of the modding communities for Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros U, but also of Splatoon 2 and 3 modding.
That whole custom level also led me to imagine what Super Mario Maker 3 could be like if it included Wonder elements.
I've done this with Super Mario Land, a decade before a level editor was finally made for that game, and I remember how tedious that was, and for a much simpler game than this one. Whatever dedication I had, you have a hundred times more, so I salute you. 🙂
Love the unique interaction between the Blewbirds & flip blocks. For how complex making a level is, this is surprisingly well thought out!!
Wow thats awesome
I will never cease to be amazed at how nintendo made a middle aged, moustachio'd plumber the cutest guy on the planet
it's honestly amazing how quickly this game has been modded
Chill level, very well designed and the wonder flower section slaps
you just, wrote the goddamn level
tbh, its quite impressive how quickly understood the level data structure is, but to WRITE all the values without level editing tools and have it work, thats a whole different level
good level btw, i wonder if we could get some mario maker shenanigans once we get a proper editor
WOW THAT WAS AMAZING! It really felt like an official level! Perfect!
That level was actually well designed for your first attempt! I can't wait to see what else you do.
Very creative! An interesting combination of objects and enemies already present that make something not only unique, but on par with the base games design philosophy. Can't wait for more!
What a fantastic level - aside from the major effort of creating one of the first custom levels, the level design really is pleasing. Can't wait to see what else you and the rest of the modding community can achieve!
This is genuinely fucking outstanding. Less than a week and theres complete custom levels for the game. Wonderful!
It might be also because the game leaked 5 days before release
Very good for a first custom level, and _especially_ one made by hand!
It'll _really_ go down once we get a level editor going though. Good luck to the modding community!
This was a beautiful, cozy level! I cannot believe the amount of stuff you did while editing this by hand, absolutely insane
It hasn't even been a week since the game got released and already people are modding their own levels, that's crazy bro! 🤯
Incredible. Makes me want Mario Maker 3! Absolutely fantastic work here
love how the level mixes it up with the birds shooting the blocks, having to go fast vs having to wait for them to use it as a platform! feels exactly like nintendo level design.. love the pipe entrance to the wonder section too. incredibly well done
This looks well done! Are you going to make a full Mario Wonder mod in the future?
I'll definitely try, though I'll probably wait till a proper level editor has been made before starting anything serious
You are insane! That is such a good level for the current state of the modding tools and understanding of the game.
Damn this is super impressive, especially given how recently the game was released and the sheer tedium involved in making custom levels for the game. Great job with the level, and we're excited to see what the future brings for mods of this game!
Can’t wait to see so many cool custom levels. Custom levels will keep this game alive for me
i cannot WAIT for bubble mario kaizo
This is honestly a really well designed level! Feels like a stage that could've actually been in the game! Absolutely loved how the two bird enemies were used in the Wonder effect. Keep up the good work! :0
This really feels like a level in the game, that’s how amazing it is.
honestly this feels more like an nsmbu level with wonder enemies than a wonder level if you get what i mean
@@CMan185can u explain'¿ i dont know what is nsmbu
@@emmatorres2944 NSMBU = New Super Mario Bros U
@@TheQuackinator ohhhh I didn't played the game from Wii u, thanks
@@CMan185thats what i thought too, but to be fair rimea is a nsmb modder
very impressive
Nice to see you here too!
You made an amazing job in terms of level-design. I just 100%ed the game and I can't wait to mod it and play some of your future levels
Awesome level! Looks good, with cool gimmicks and a strict theme. Amazing job!
So good, I'm really excited to see what else will be possible
Bro the level design is amazing dude, this could very well be a level in the game. It’s absolutely amazing
That wonder effect is one of my favorites in the game, and this level uses it pretty well!
It's just a matter of time before someone makes a level editor with a real UI now. I bet there already is a team of fans working on it somewhere. This is amazing work
This is amazing! Just a week after the game coming out, well-designed custom levels are already being made!
This is righteous stuff. The possibilities are endless when it comes to modding this game.
I can't believe that modding is already happening, even if it's really tedious to make levels rn
it just occurred to me that mario wonder's elements could go crazy with kaizo levels
I think the most impressive thing about this to me is how perfectly you matched the design sensibilities of the base game. I would 100% believe this is a “real” level and THATS what I want to see out of mods, it’s what I always sought in Maker/Maker2 as well.
wow, this is fantastic! cant wait for more
This looks amazing dude. Keep up the good work!
That’s incredible. Fantastic job!!!
Your level design is always on point, I adore it. This must have been very tedious and long to do, big congrats and even bigger wows.
The level is really imaginative. I'm excited to see what you would do in the future.
I'm very excited to see what wonder modding can do, there are so many unique mechanics that have so much potential
This level looks really fun. I can't wait to play it myself.
this is literally amazing, especially with how hard it would be to make a custom level with the whole typing it out stuff
in addition to being a really impressive feat, the level design is also excellent. nice job!
if you told me this was a regular level in the game i'd believe it, incredibly well made!
cool, I like when levels try to have a consistency, a "story", and fit the game, you did it perfectly!
I haven't played the game, nor have I seen any non-commercial levels, but this looks official as HECK! Spectacular job, and I can't wait to play on Christmas!
Excellent custom level! Well done!
Using the Blewbird arrows as blockades during the top-down bit is an inspired idea, honestly. Really cool stuff :3!
This is just so awesome to see
this is SUPER awesome, i cant wait for a proper level editor, imagine what will be made with it
also the only thing id say about this level is that it feels like its more about the blewbirds and the owl enemies, besides that this is really good
That ground pound cancel was pretty well thought :)
Quite the impressive stage!
This is insanely good. Well done! I'd love to play this somehow.
this is insanely impressive you guys are able to do this kinda stuff even though the game just came out
Wow, that looks really good!
What a lovely level, good use of all the mechanics and combining them. Good stuff. Ill subscribe for that
W
This makes me really hope we get a Super Mario Maker 3 in the somewhat near future. I so badly want more stuff like this, and to somehow create my own stages with all this marvelous and complex enemies, blocks, and locations! Great work with your level by the way! Looks like a legit level in the actual game ^^
This is fantastic! Just wow! :D
Very cool! Bonus points for being team Green!
We all love you for this!
Wow! This is amazing! I can only imagine how hard it must have been.
I am now VERY excited to start modding this game soon! ^^
Very cool level btw!
AND it's a well designed level, bravo!
Didnt really pay attention to the title, so I thought this was an official level for half of the video. What a good job.
Excellent works!!!
Wow, this is extremely well put together. It frel like it could be official. How do Wonder Flowers work, far as effects go? Is it equivalent to just setting a flag as to which preset event happens?
thanks, and yeah wonder flowers just have a variable you can change to set which effect gets triggered, I chose the top-down effect since it seemed pretty simple to use
@@Rimeai wonder how long it'll take to add custom effects
@@MelodyLuminaThat's a good point... a really good point... i guess we have to wonder together 😂
This seems like a legit Level
Well done 😃
That was super awesome! I really enjoyed it!!!
wow i know a lot of people are saying this is on par with nintendo levels but i would even say this is BETTER than most mario wonder levels.
This level is wonderful!
I will say, for a level made with strictly switch toolbox, this has a great consistent mechanic throughout the level and it gives me hope for the future of the modding community
That was fast, I'm playing since before day 1 and didn't even finished the latest final-final invisible level and custom levels are already popping up. In some months with a easy way to create levels I'm sure I'll toss my controller playing kaizo levels :P
I love the different enemy designs in this game. They are so cute and silly.
Genuinely thought I was seeing an official level playthrough watching this. Great job!
I was literally thinking to myself: "Huh, I thought this game looked too easy but this actually looks like a good challenging level" and then whoop de doo I find out it's not in the base game. Still, excited for more modded levels to come
no mario maker 3?
rimea: "no problem ill do it myself"
This level is amazing. Looks like it was designed by Nintendo. No Kaizo stuff or similar things. I bet tons of people would enjoy that!
I'm shocked only a week in of the games release we have custom content! Well done!
If i didnt know this was a custom level, i would have thought this was legit. This is fantastic work!
