- I've seen a lot of speculation about the potential (or lack thereof) of editing and customising wonder effects in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, so I decided to give that a shot.

I always assumed that the wonder effects seamlessly teleported you to a different area with a similar layout. Learning I was wrong is neat!
That was actually what they originally did, before Takashi Tezuka vetoed it in favour of altering the current location.
@@papyrussemi2848 makes sense this was chosen. Loading up a new location may've required an abrupt transition while the old location was unloaded and new location loaded in. Modifying the existing location makes it seamless.
@@papyrussemi2848 Explains why it's called "ItemWonderHOLE" in the game's files then. Hole as in "portal to another world" I assume.
But yeah, I'm also very glad they decided against it
Though I'm fairly sure such an effect does exist, specifically for the wonder effect ends that warps you back to the level.
@@Aeduo not necessarily, that kind of thing can be done entirely seamlessly. Sonic 3 does it when you move from Act 1 of a zone to Act 2. The end of Act 1 and the start of Act 2 are designed to be identical, so when it loads in the new stage and teleports you to the beginning of it, you don’t notice a thing. And if you used Tails to beat the boss while keeping Sonic still outside that transitional zone/boss arena, the game would just fully crash when it tried that trick 😂
Again, you should try to combine w1 backgrounds with w6 lighting. It would look pretty cool.

Great video, to make the water wonder effect better, maybe you could add floating square bubbles of water in the air and add semisolids on top of them, so you can jump from under, go to the top, and ten you're "stuck". The fireball mechanic could make some cool stuff too :o

Oh no actual invisible kaizo blocks for troll levels. :v (yes I know troll levels already have invisible platforms and fake blocks, but those require much shenanigans to implement currently.)

This is a really cool discovery. I love modding games and have dabbled with making mods myself. Yeah, Mario Wonder custom level modding is obviously still in its infancy, but I have a feeling that at some point down the road, there will be a very user-friendly Mario Wonder custom level creator developed. I look forward to the first full-blown Mario Wonder mod much like how "Newer Super Mario Bros Wii" was a glorious feat of modding!
at first it seemed like wonder effects were super unique and crazy, but seeing them re-used made me realize they're basically just global events that can be put whenever and wherever
this is super promising. The bare-bones stuff you've shown here already has so much potential
I've been wondering how long it would take for people to mod custom wonder effects, I hope this becomes so much more popular they're pretty cool
I hope that the Wonder level editor gets more finished so at least it's more usable. Having Custom stuff would be fantastic if will be possible in the future but for now I like the state of the modding community of Mario Wonder. Almost a month has passed and we already see intresting stuff that the modding community has done. Maybe I will join the Wonderland Discord server next week to see previews of the modding stuff of the game.
Love to these videos, after completing Wonder fully, it's great to see "new" stuff added with these mods

If I would guess, it's prob typing something in the NSMB logo font, then replace the white with a blue to purple gradient, color picking it from the wonder logo, and then finally put the words to do the curve effect, prob Photoshop or smth

I always thought that the topdown wonder effect you could walk off the walls and you'd like die to the "void". causing me to be in fear of being by the edge.

I *wonder* if you could add new enemies/objects, or at least modify them into different enemies/objects, to the game once people figure out how that works soon.
yep, you can, it's pretty tedious so I haven't really done it yet but pretty much everything an object needs is in a single file (per object)
none of it is hardcoded (as far as I could tell)
I wanted more spike ball sections in the game.
This is pretty useful for that.

no matter how crazy custom levels get, ill still consider you the king of wonder and first ever to do it cuz well its true
I would love to see these invisible player-only barriers in SMM3, especially if we could place them on top of other objects to create the illusion of coins and stuff having collision.
Maybe it could even be an effect you can attach to objects, including enemies (with some sort of indication, probably)
Romhacks for this game are gonna be insane a couple years down the line.

I like that the game still makes you actually walk on the water (splash effects) even with the invisible barrier.
I WONDER if making custom bosses would be possible.
And maybe even custom worlds!

This actually makes me think the Wonder Flower in Super Mario Maker 3 wouldn't be so hard to do after all, just make it a sort of "Switch" that is interactable with a ton of objects, such as on/off blocks, etc.
Cool! more similarities to doom editing, Tags are also a thing in doom, though not as their own object, tags are something that's purely in the properties, If the wonder effect were do be done doom, it would probably be a walk-over linedef which then is tagged to a bunch of sectors, having them move to reveal more enemies and such. Fushigi looks really promising also, I hope the project takes inspiration from the UI of doom builder since doom builders UI is pretty intuitive.

balloon transformation is basically the p-balloon in mario maker though, not really that special. :P

Imagine a wonder effect where the ground crumbles when you touch the wonder flower, sending you in a dark cave, and you become a wachamacallit (one of those things with the big mouth that eats everything) and it acts like builder Mario in Mario Maker 2, but with your mouth instead of a hammer, and you have to dig out of a cave in a 100 sec time limit to grab the wonder seed at the surface
That basically sorta is like the wonder effect in Jewel-Block Cave.
Maybe this is just me being nostalgic for creepy old SMW ROMs, but I’d love to see how Wonder Effects could be used for horror-type scenarios.

You could probably combine the walking on water with the KO counter to make it so you need to shoot fireballs into the water to defeat the enemies and get the seed
Is it possible to make a flagpole animation that causes you to spin multiple times before sliding down? That feels like a silly small detail that would be fun to include inside a total overhaul romhack-type of mod.
Wonder idea : you turn into a goomba and get chased by a double-sized maw maw in an autoscroller, with coins making sure that he keep up the paste, and in order to get the wonder seed you have to reach the end of the track to get above him and kill him

When accessible level editing becomes a thing, I wonder (pun not intended) how they will do the wonder flower. Maybe make a list of effects as the base thing and then creating a spawning system maybe?

Hey rimea, I was wondering, (no pun intended) if it is possible to make custom levels that start with a wonder effect, because it would be cool to eventually see a full top down map pack.
I haven't actually tried, but come to think of it, yeah I suppose the Wonder Tag could probably be triggered the moment you start the level

Is it possible to trigger Wonder effects recursively? As in, how does the game react to multiple wonder tag objects in a single area? What happens if two Wonder Flowers are collected in a row?
Never tried this, but ingame there basically already are levels with multiple wonder effects (Rage Stage, Final badge marathon). And wonder effects are not tied specifically to wonder flowers I believe; in addition to the stages mentioned above, the Bowser Jr fights trigger wonder effects too I believe.

Just checking, you don't actually need the wonder flower and wonder seed to trigger wonder effects, right? Since the Bowser Jr fights triggers wonder effects with no corresponding flower or seed to end the effect. I also assume you can switch between wonder effects, like how it's done in Rage Stage, Final level marathon, and again bowser jr fights.
You're right about not needing a wonder flower to trigger a wonder effect, but Bowser Jr.'s effects aren't actually wonder effects technically, they're built into his bossfight and can't be triggered on their own
@@Rimea but isn't the water effect just a combination of water flip and water ball effect, and the dark fight just the darkness effect (and moving platform which I'm not sure if it is a different effect as it also appeared in a darkness level). Admittedly the grow and shrink probably isn't a regular effect though. Though on hindsight, darkness isn't even a wonder effect, iirc one of the stages has a dark area which lights up when the wonder flower is activated (along with cosmic mario).

wait what about player changes wonder effects (like goombario and wubba marios) how do they work?
the reason I didn't really talk about those is because I'm not totally sure, they have their own value (the PlayerMorphID) but copying that over to a different Wonder effect doesn't transform the player properly
They should have made a wonder effect where your metal and you fall a long way underwater
